Martin has said it is a matter

Some students quoted in the

all the wiser.
Peacock said at first she expect-
ed the class to move faster than the
students' abilities.
"You want them to excel. but
everythlllg takes tune.• she said
dunng a class break Monday.
"That's been a real eye-opener.•
When the kids first filed into her
classroom Sept. 7, Peacock sa.td
she expected them to be mo.re
advanced.
"I pictw'ed them to be academ-
ically and socially higher,• she
said. "Some still can't tie their
shoes. That surprised me."
Peacock said she planned some
lessons that turned out to be too
advanced for her first graders
"I've planned some things,
some sun.pie cut and paste things,
that I thfnk is easy but ... , " Pea-
cock said, rolling her eyes. Pea-
cock detailed how she spent time
teaching the lods to make farm
animals with construction paper,
but only four or five actually
resembled animals.
"I'm like, 'What is this?' But I
love it so much I put them all up,"
she said. ..Those mistakes are my
fault."
There was the time just one
month ago when Peacock scav-
enged through local stOl'es for
hours trying to find candy com for
a math lesson.
"I was going to have them
paste the candy com to the paper
and draw '2 plus 2 equals 4' with
the COrl\. • she said ... That just did
not work at all because the glue
didn't suck It was a huge mess •
So far, Peacock has learned one
valuable elemenJ&r:Y teacher
wOrd: unprovilation.
•Last week I thought of this
game we Used to play m school -
around the world,• she said. "l
thought we'd play 1t for a little
while. but the kids went nuts.
"And it I play 'Duck, Duck,
Goose' one more time. l'll go crazy.
But the kids can do it for hours,"
Peacock said, laughing
But what Peacock is most proud
of is the progress her kids have
made since they entered Room 10.
"At first, the days took longer
because the kids got tired. Some
couldn't write," she said. "Now
th.ey can write complete sen-
tences. They're growing up. It's
fun to watch."
Peacock said she's "very glad"
she switched careers from interna-
tional business.
"There are days I go home and
I can't believe these people pay
me to do this,• she said. "I'm doing
something that actually matters."

Kreutzkamp a big loss for Mesa
The onlde In (las1 Fridoy~)

Cooch Brian Kreutzkamp does
not do juaice to Brian's accom·

impact he has had on the aquatics
program at Mesa.
The departure of a coach-as
talented, dedicated and success-
ful as Brian warrants twther l'Om-
meot.
Brian Kreutzkamp began his
coaching career at Mesa in the
fall of 1992 -one year after his
graduation from high school.
At that time, he took over. as
head roeich of an age group water
polo program comprised of sixth,
seventh and eighth graders
whose water polo experience was_
limited to the previous summer.
In less than one year, Brian
coached this group to a bronze
medal at the National Junior
Olympics. Shortly after his 21st
birthday, Brian was named head
coach of Costa Mesa Aquatics,
coached Mesa to its ninth consec-
utive league championship, and
was named Pacific Coast League
water polo coach ot the year ..
In 1995, Brian once again
secured a bronze-medal winning
performance from Costa Mesa
players at lbe National Junlor

ers attain are admirable, perhaps
more important ts the lmpact
which Brian has had on the per-
sonal development of the young
adults whose lives he bas
toudied.
Brian, and the members of this
year's varsity team, have literally
grown up together.
For several of the players, he ls
the. only coa.ch they have ever
had, and the position he has filled
in their lives far exceeds that of
"coach." In addition to being a
positive role model, Brian bas
been a . confidante, adviser a.nd

We at Mesa are losing, not just
a coach, but a member of our
families. His departwe has creat-
ed a huge hole in the program
and in our· hearts as well. The
location of a successor will be a
very difficult task indeed.

I'm vice president/board mem·
ber of the Touchdown Club.
I'm cdlling to pledge my total
support for Dick Freeman
remaining as head coach for the
progran1.
He's done a great job taking
over for Coach Schuster and
works very well with the kids.
I jusl wanted to pledge my
support for him.
Denny Achterberrg
Newport Beach
Dick Freeman should be the
head coach at Corona del Mar
High School.
1 Uunk the Daily Pilot and oth·
er sources of news should keep
on these people unW he is named
the head coach.
He is the coach of the year. He
won seven football games, to his
low losses.
He did a great job with that
football team alter the controver-
sy of (Mark) Schuster.
He was more organized than
Schuster. He's a better coach than
Schuster.
He's a better roach than any of
the boosters want to bring in and
he should be named head coach.
I'm very adamant about my posi-
tion.
Pat Kelly
Costa Mesa
['m the left guard-, number 64 .
I was a senior this year under the
helm of Mark Schuster for two
weeks and then following, Dick
Freeman.
Basically, it comes down to
with Dick Freeman taking over
the program and putting us under
his wing and just guiding us
through the season, when we
could have just quit and died after
Schuster left.
With him leaving it would just
destroy the program again.
So, no matter what, Freeman·
should definitely be head coach.
He has all the respect of all the
players and if he loses it then it's
just, well it's {baloney).
