By carolyn Miller, Dally Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Public information, education and stricter laws and enforcement have reportedly contributed to a 38% decrease in the number of alcohol related traffic injuries and deaths in Cahfomia from 1990 to 1994. The costs of a first-time dri· vmg under the influe nce arrest can amount to $10,000 in fines, penalties, fees for vehicle impound..ment, alcohol educa- tion classes, lawyers and increased insurance premiums, according to a recent report by the Automobile Club of South- ern California. Additionally, the driver license of a fin,.t time DUI offender is automatically revoked for four months which can reportedly affect a person's ability to earn a living. As a result, people with a DUI can lose thetr 1obs which could have a severe finanaal impact and affect fdllUly and fnends, said Klaus Goedecke, m anager of the Auto Club's Newport Beach district office.
