Innocently enough, perhaps by mistake, one l
such letter from a Costa Mesa gul addr sed to the 1

As you can imagine, the letter posed a problem.
There is no Santa in residence at this now paper

what were we to do with the little girl's requ ts for

NEWPORT BEACH -Public
information, education and
stricter laws and enforcement
have reportedly contributed to
a 38% decrease in the number
of alcohol related traffic injuries
and deaths in Cahfomia from
1990 to 1994.
The costs of a first-time dri·
vmg under the influe nce arrest
can amount to $10,000 in fines,
penalties, fees for vehicle
impound..ment, alcohol educa-
tion classes, lawyers and
increased insurance premiums,
according to a recent report by
the Automobile Club of South-
ern California.
Additionally, the driver
license of a fin,.t time DUI
offender is automatically
revoked for four months which
can reportedly affect a person's
ability to earn a living.
As a result, people with a
DUI can lose thetr 1obs which
could have a severe finanaal
impact and affect fdllUly and

A law passed in 1990, per-
mits law enforcement officers
to suspend "on the spot" the
drivers lJcense of those arrested
on suspicion of drunken dri-

Since that law took effect,
there have been more than 1.4

And then there are the close

HAMMER TIME!
Unbeaten Estancia girls
rack up sixth straight
with convincing 59-22
victory over Aliso Niguel.
By Richard Dunn, Dally Pilot
COSTA MESA -Even though Jes-
sica Waltz of Estancia High could be
playing with a stress fracture in her
right foot, the ~gles' girls basketball
opponent Tuesday night -Aliso
Niguel -bad Pacific-Coast League
vibrations, which meant Waltz & Co.
were licking their collective chops.
Waltz, a three-time All-PCL
choice, sent quite a message to the
Wolverines with 22 points, seven
rebounds, six steals, five assists and
four blocked shots -in only three
quarters of action -as the unbeaten
Eagles hammered Aliso Niguel, 59-
22, in Estancia Townament pool play.
6 wThey're picked to finish in front of r us in our league,• Estanoa Coach i Russ Davis said of the Wolverines (3-

Estancia Hlgh's Jessica Waltz drives through two foes. buzzer, as they built a 21-8 lead.
.
Estancia's defense caused 16 Aliso
Niguel twnovers in the first half, 27 in
the game. Though AllSo Niguel bad
the height with 6-foot-2 Brooke
Hyman, the Eagles had a solid effort
underneath of blocking out, led by
Jennifer McCartin, who held Hyman
scoreless in the first half.
The Eagles, 1 of 11 from the field
in the second quarter, built a 35-14
halftime lead, and continued to pour
it on in the third, as their defense
forced poor Aliso Niguel shooting (7
of 36).
Estancia is off to its best start in
Davis' five years as coach.
•(Waltz) feels that way, too, so she
was fired up. She felt slighted (by the
preseason predictions). When league
comes around, watch out for her. She
has a chance to tie Olivia DiCamilli as
the only player in PCL history to be a
four-time all-league player, and Jessi-
ca's going for that.•
Waltz, who will get X-rays on !J.er
foot today, ~didn't want to be in a cast
and not play against Aliso Niguel,•
he added.
Amy Deming (10 points), Vivi
Rodriguez (five rebounds), Jill Black

(eight points) contributed throughout.
In the end of the first quarter,
Waltz had three consecutive steals
and ensuing layups to aid Estancia in
its early blowout.

•Woe be the schedule-

find him; Marina posts
65-42 tournament win.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
CYPRESS -Costa Mesa
High's tour through the top 10
girls basketball teams in Orange
County takes a break the rest of
this week, none too soon for Mus-
tangs Coach J,.en Whitacre and
his shell-shoded squad.
"This is a new situation for
me,• said Whitacre, who watched
a 65-42 loss to Powerful ~a
Tuesday in the quarterfinals of
the Cypress TournameQt at
Cypress High.
The verdict dropped the Mus-
tangs to 3-5, with each of their
last four defeats coming to teams
ranked in the preseason top 10
Marina (7-0) began the season
No. 7, while Woodbridge (No. 1),
Fountain Valley (No. 4) and San
"~11\ente (No 9) have also taken MeS8 ~ ·school, combining for a
victory margih of nearly 30
points.
•we're a Vdllng 'M.m and we
have a long way11t()(.·~g, • contin-
ued Whitacre, wh&se squad
stayed with the Vtlcings, during
an inspired first quarter (19-16)
before turnovers, shooting woes,
a loss of stamina -due to team-
wide illness -and increased
Marina productlvity spurred a
familiar spiral
"Playing that many top 10
teams isn't the thing to do when
you're still trying to find your
starting five. rB\tt at least we've
seen everythi..rig' we need to do to
be a good team. w
What Whitacre saw early was
a 6-for-9 first-quarter shooting
perlormance from his Mustangs,
who meet the loser of Tuesday's
Cypress-Torrance quarterfinal in
a fifth-place semifinal Thursday
at 4:30.
But the Vikings drilled 9 of 16
dunng the same stint to keep tho
Mustangs from the lead, then
opened the second quarter on a
7-2 run en route to a 30-22 half-
time edge. . ..
Marina's 6-f~2 senior Kris-
ten Cappel scored the first six
points after mtenniss1on as the
V1kingneeled off 10 unanswered r 16 of the first 20 to put Mesa
'' in the familiar blowout mode.
Even Mesa's victories have
been one-sided (an average of 38
points), leaving few remaining
opportunities for Whitacre's
young players to experience
crunch time, before Pacific Coast
Leagu~ play begins Jan. 4. ·u we start playing better,
we'll have close games,·
Whitacre said.
Juniors Koo Kim and Chanel
Anderson, both of whom battled
coughing spells, paced Mesa
with 12 and eight points, respec-
tively, while sophomore starter
Kelly C hapin chipped in six
points and a team-high eight
rebounds.
Junior Chantay Peyton added
a fourth-quarter spark for the
Mustangs, collecting four points
and three boards. t
