JOH N ACEVEZ
He's an ace of a role model
MAAC MARTH I ON..Y Pl.OT
John Acevez hopes to use his music as an lnsplratlon for area youngsters. •1 know from all the mistakes I made, and I want to help them learn from
my mistakes," said Acevez.
HE IS
•Johnny Ace,• as he's know in
musical circles. John Acevez is a 32~
year-old Estancia High School alumni
who wants to give back to Costa Mesa
youth -through his music.
•1 want lo struggle with them and
help them put education first,"
Acevez said. •1 know from all the mis-
takes I made, and I want to help them
learn from r.ny mistakes.•
FROM TRAFFIC TO SYNTHESIZERS
After working with the county for
13 years, Acevez started his own
music productions and distnbution
business this year, something he has
dreamed about for many years.
The Costa Mesa resident currently
works as a traffic maintenance super-
visor with the county, attends classes
at Rancho Santiago College and finds
time to write, compose and perform
his house dance music.
He recently cut his first compact
• disc •nm.e Changes Everything"
which he is distributing to music
stores and disc jockeys across South-
ern California.
•1t•s a hard business, but it's what
makes me happy," he said.
NEEDED: ROLE MODELS
Last week, Acevez spoke to about
50 students in Estancia High School's
Mech.a Club for Latino students.
"When I was at Estancia, there was
about 50 Latino students," Acevez
said. •Now there are 550."
Though he said he was nervous at
first, Acevez melted into the podium,
telling the students to pay more atten-
tion to what they want to accomplish
and not let anything stand in their
way.
AS YOUNG ADULTS
"I try to talk to the kids at their lev-
el as an equal." Acevez sai.d. •They're
young adults, and they should be
treated as such."
Acevez said local youth need more
role models m visible, authoritative
positions.
•1 feel that in Orange County there
is a lack of Latino role models in the
spotlight,• be S4.ld. "We had Gaddi
Vasquez, but he's not a (county)
supervisor anymore."
Though last week was Acevez's
first speaking appearance before
school students, he said h e hopes to
make it a regular occuuence.
•1 really want to get more involved
with the community and show them
that they can accomplish whatever
they want to,• he said.
Acevez said he is working toward a
degree in psychology and would like
to work with teen-agers as a coun-
selor.
"There's a lot of negativity out
there. They shouldn't absorb that,• he
said. "They need to continue pursuing
their dream."

Placing the cro~

• It took some time for all
to see the light, but there
seems little doubt the Sea
Kings have the man they
want to guide their football
teams down the line.
S omehow the balance
doesn't seem to fit. For
weeks the subject bas
been Dick Freeman and
his wait for anointment as
Corona del Mar's bead football
coach.
Now, today, in one edition,
the result and it's all ove.r.
And, it's all so anticlimactic.
You see, Dick Freeman has
been Corona's coach since that
very bleak day wben it was
revealed that former bead coach
Mark Schuster was arrested by
Newport Beach police on
molestation charges. quite
possibly the most stunning news
to ever slam home for myself in
some 31 years on the local sports
scene. Just a total shock.
Corona del Mar's Sea Kings
football team was a ship bit by a
massive torpedo and it was
going down fast, only to see a
big, burly sort of a man step
forward, clutch a flailing bunch
by the back of their collective
necks and put them back on
target.
Freeman's strength was the
ability to stay focused, put his
stalf in focus and direct his
players' focus, and be never
faltered.
On paper he was the •Interim
Coach.• In reality, interim
evaporated the day after
Corona's 17-10 loss to Kennedy
in nonleague action.
0 ver the years I never really
knew Dick Freeman.
I knew him by sight, but he was
always the right hand of a head
coach wbom obviously
commanded respect. But in terms
of dialogue, Dick Freeman's
directions were to his players,
seldom with the press.
I also knew where he bad
come from, as an assistant to
Dave Holland at CdM, and as an
assistant to one of the most
unheralded of all Orange County
coaches, Jerry Witte at
Saddleback Hlgh School in
Santa Ana.
Witte, no matter what
accolades he has received. over
the years, has never received
the true respect he deserves.
His philosophies, his coaching,

he was trying to begin a

I did not hear the earlier
portion of the conversation,
but I can guess. It most likely
mirrored what Martin had been
hearing for the last two weeks,
or reading it in the various
communiques to the Daily Pilot
from Freeman supporters.
Some may have felt rather
exasperated with Martin and his
waiting game.
Actually, it proved to be a
benefit, because it developed
into a bonding issue with many
factions.
Only for two, pt>..rhaps three,
parents who were unhappy their

All of the rest were in

56-55 nail-biter.
: . By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot •
COSTA MESA -There are 26 seconds
left on the clock, your team is down by
one point and you have to move the full
length of the court to set up a play.
Sounds like a lot of pressure, but actu-

come up with some miracle play that will
pull out the win.

the past 15 years as the head man at
