By Evan Henerson, Dally Piiot CORONA DEL MAR -The list of people asking for regular patrols of Buck Gully is growing. Representatives from two homeowners associations have written letters to the police department, the city or Newport Beach and The Irvine Co. expressing concern over the number of transients who appear to be lJVing 111 the ravine. "I'd like to see somebody patrol that gully every couple of weeks,• Yvonne Houssels said. "The people living there are tres- passing and there is a legitimate concern about fire hazards.• Representabve from nearby Spyglass Hill and Shorecliffs homeowners assoaabons have also e~res ed concern about the mereasmg number of transtents in the gully. Homeowners have not pre5Sed the issue recently because of the holldays, but Spy- glass President Claire Schwan plans to take up the cause again after the first of the year ·we are very concerned about this,• Schwan said. "Tius area IS normally so free of crime that people become complacent. U there's an open door or window, (burglars) can comE' in at night when people are sleeping." Residents say that, over the past few years, the area has expe- rienced several burglaries and break-ins. Seven large banners were pre- sented last Sunday to the owners of the award wmning homes so those on boats could recognize the award winning decorated homes as they paraded by. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1995 Memories of Christmas past, keep future holidays bright . Our family bas been very lucky over the years One way or another, we have always somehow managed to oome together at Christmas. Cer- tAinly we have not failed to have a quorum. The more time goes by, the more complex the gathering -s\rategies and logistics. No. 1 daughter becomes a Coloradan and forms her own family (which, as you may have beard, includes No. 1 grandson lravis). No. 2 daughter becomes a San Franciscan and thin.ks about forming her own family. And grandma Katy -great grandma, actually -marries a fine gentleman, Stan, who is (\Ccustomed to having Christmas with his family. They will resolve the problem by coming down from their home in the 'tnountains behind Escondido for Christmas Eve dinner with Stan's No 1. son and his familY, They will drive back up to their perch that night, tum ard'Und early the next morn- ing and come back down the hill to open presents. Next, they will drive two-plus }lours to our house, open more presents, and have their second Christmas dinner of the season. These people are 88 and 84. Could you handle that sched- ·uie? Not me. I'd at least check into a motel Christmas night. Stan won't hear of it. He's owned several lravelodges over the years and he simply doesn't do hotels anymore. Next year, things look to be even mo're complex. The Trav, ()'. 1111 (1)\-...t fred martin you see, is expecting a baby sis- ter (or brother-his parents want to be surprised). That will mean Christmas in Colorado, for sure, which is not too hard to take for us, the only real problem will be organizing ourselves ahead of time. As noted here Thursday, I tend to come late to celebrating Christmas. Oh, I get there. I ho ho ho with the best of them. I just don't do it until the last moment. But I am just fine, thank you. I bought the tree Wednesday, and by the time you read this, it should be almost decorated. The outdoor lights went up Thursday evening, shortly after we posted . the last of the Christmas cards. Shopping will begin in earnest today. Shortly after picking up San Francisco daughter Carol at the airport. It will be completed, on schedule, by early afternoon Sunday That leaves plenty of time to Decker returns from h ospital Newport-Mesa Unified school trustee Ed Decker was expected to be released from Hoag Memor- ial Hospital today to return home just in time for the holidays after undergoing an angioplasty earlier this week. •rm feeling great," Decker, 56, said cheerfully Friday from tus hospital room. Decker went to Hoag Tuesday with some chest pain and under- went the non-surgical coronary procedure, which involved insert- ing a stent to keep his artery open. He bad an earlier angioplasty in November, but the artery had apparently closed up, he said. After a few days under obser- vation and blood-thinning med- ication at the Newport Beach hos- pital. Decker was given the nod to return home. "I guess I'm in good shape," he said. •My doctor, car- diologist Bonnie Gainer, is very encouraged by the results. She is mcredible." . Decker, a four-year member of the school board, even joked about doing laps around the fourth floor of the hospital during his stay. Up until November, Decker said, he had never experienced any heart problems and wasn't even aware be could be at risk. But then he learned his younger sister also had undergone an angioplasty. The Costa Mesa resident plans to spend Christmas at home with his family and rest up to attend the Rose Bowl football game on New Year's Day. -By Irts Yokoi take a nap, get to church Christ- mas Eve, arise early the next morning to stutt the turkey, and pick up lravis and his parents at the airport around 2 p.m . DECEMBER 23, 199S At 'Spider Woman' offers respite from holiday theater: I f you're overdosed on produc- ~ tions of •The Nutaaclcer• and •A Christmas Carol,• the Per- /orming Arts Center bas just the cure. The Tony Award-winning musical "Kiss of the Spider Woman• opens Tuesday for a two week run, and it's guaran- . teed to get you right out of the holiday spirit. Based on Manuel Puig's novel, "Kiss of the Spider Woman" t.s the story of flamboyant window dresser, Molina, who is impris- oned in a Latin American jail for a sexual offense. His cell mate is Valentin, a political prisoner. Their unwilling relationship is at once hostile and distrusting ut, as Molina tells stories to alenti.n about the characters in _.,, ___ he has seen. including an een character called the Spi- er Woman, the relationship adually becomes one of love, · endship..,respect and mutual .anderstalfding. • South Coast Repertory staged the non-musical version several ears ago on the Second Stage to -weat acclaim. That riveting pro- duction was a two-character affair that powerfully and frankly dealt with everything from poli- -tics to homosexuality to the will lo survive. The stage version is not too different from the 1985 ~ film version that garnered an Academy Award for William .~wt in the role ot Molina. · So, how do you make a musi- • :Cal out of a play like this~ "I think audiences are pleas- antly surprised," said Juan Chio- ran, who plays Molina in the ·musical. •1n this version, the Spi- der Woman has a much more • prominent role. And the fact that 's musicalized makes it a very different interpretation.• And it doesn't hurt that the Spider Woman is being played by Broadway legend Chita Rivera in a repeat of her Tony Award-winning role. Her role • expands the play's fantasy sequences into show-stopping nwnbers, but the ~erious themes of the play are still the focal • • point. "It's not a play that is just going to pacify you,• Chioran said ·It challenges you and edu- christopher trela cates you and demands th.at you pay attention and that you deal with certain topics. We've had very liberal audiences embrace it, and we've had very conserva- tive audiences at first be resistant to it, but eventually they come with you. That's great, when you can actually sway someone's opinion somewhat, or make them see another side of the issue.• C hioran said the emotional demands of his role, as well as being on the road for 14 months, can take it's toll physically and mentally. "It's very ditficult, no question about it,• be said. "I go through a real roller coaster ride of emo- tion all night long, which is very demanding but ultimately very rewarding. But the emotional punishment that I take is now manifesting itself physically. My neck is out, or my back. I'm not losmg my mind, wluch could very easily happen. It's just my body that is starting to fall apart." Chi.roan said that while there have indeed been receptive audiences wherever the show stops, they have found that "Kiss of the Spider Woman· is a hard sell during the holidays. u I think that Christmas time is tough. period, unless you're doing 'The ~utcracker' or 'Christmas '<!:a.col.' It's not the kind of show you 91ve someone tickets to as a Christmas gift. 'Meny Christmas, here's two tickets for the prison show. "I did everything else, but I never had an interest in 'The Nutcracker' because it was so traditional,• said the 22-year-old dancer during a recent rehearsal break. "The first time I saw it was when I did it, but I didn't really see it because I was in it" Giller, who has taken classes at the Jimmy Defore Dance Stu- dio in Costa Mesa, is dancing several roles in "The Nutcrack- er,• including the doll in the opening party scene. Her roles vary each night, depending on the cast lineup. When she is not busy dancing, Giller is a hostess and waitress at a local restaurant. "Most of us have to do other jobs part time,• Giller said. "That's reality. You've got to love dancing. That's why we do it.• Audiences know how much fun "The Nutcracker" is to watch. Is 1t fun for the dancers too? "During the year we do so many different pieces, and we're always cramming for time, learn- ing and polishing," Giller said. "Then 'The Nutcracker' season comes around, and finally it's something we already know All we have to do is polish it. We don't have to re-learn or re-do it. And it's a nice way to end the year. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a thank you. EUZABE'Ilf TALBOT Newport Beach correspondence . Separate districts is ·an idea whose time 'has cOme I f it made sense to have a separate Costa Mesa School District and a separate New- port Beach School District in 1960, why doesn't it make sense toda.y? These two citi~._.tike any two cities, have different con- stituents, different ideas on education and different demo- graphics to serve. They were different in 1960 and they are even more different today. To say that to have-a separate administration system for each district would be wasteful is ludicrous. That would mean that Foun- tain Valley and Huntington Beach should be unified, that Placentia-Fullerton should be unified, that Orange-Santa Ana should be unified or they would be wasting taxpayer's money. These separate school dis- tricts mentioned above have separate school districts because they represent areas that are different just as Costa Mesa and Newport Beach are as different as day and night. Neither one is better than the other, just different and they deserve a separate school sys- tem to administer to the educa- tional needs of their particular _.....student populations. Representation on the board of trustees should be whole and to itself with seven trustees in Costa Mesa work- ing solely for Costa Mesa stu- dents and their parents, and seven Newport trustees mak- • again ing decisions solely for New- port students and their parents. As it is, you have three Costa Mesa trustees ma.king deci- sions for Newport students and four Newport area trustees ma.king decisions for Costa Mesa students. As for Costa Mesa Mayor Joe Erickson!s complaint about ~e trustees of )l.Jewport-Mesa proposing the sale of two Costa Mesa-zoned school sites recently, where was the may- or's voice when the district sold the Jamboree high school site (Corona del Mar zone) for approximately $15 million and the Corona del Mar Elemen- tary School site for almost $5 million back in the 1980's? The Costa Mesa zone cer- tainly got its money's worth on those two deals, so wliere's the beef? But this simply points up the absurdity of having a com- bined school district in the first place. There are always going to be these kinds of differences of opinions on the sale of the sites and petty jealousies until Costa Mesa trustees make decisions for Costa Mesans and Newport trustees make decisions for Newporters. So let's get on with making the two districts truly represen- tative again as they were prlor to Uie 1965 unification. It's an idea whose time has come - again. Here's a sampling of responses: !think the city school district • and the dty should encourage young people and adults to use our school yards for healthy recreation on weekends and after school. Our adult group has used the school yard for softball for years and have never abused the fields. Instead of penalizing everyone, why not penalize the few people who do litter or destroy school property? Bl.Tl'CH WIISON Costa MeSil I believe that they should have permits to play there and yes, I think they should go ahead and have the city monitOI those areas so that unauthorized people are not playing on those fields. l think it's very important that we take this to the next level. STIJARTWOOD Costa Mesa I'm a parent of a child who plays soccer at Estancia and I think that access should definit~ ly be limited because we need the fields to be kept up to a cer- tain level condition, so that when they are playing their games it's not gomg to be dangerous to them or hazardous. Sometimes the fields get pret· ty beat up ii unauthorized peo- ple just go there and play all these games. If there's holes or anything on the field, the girls could be running and they could trip and it could be really dan- gerous for them. The Mu.Slangs varsity won their game early Thursday morning and the team was back on campus around 3 p.m. and the coaches were scrambling around for alternative transportation for a bus that never showed up to get the N team up to Los Amigos for a 5:15 p.m. game. The game was the N's sixth game in four days. "Besides all the games, they were having a pretty good time doing other things like going to the movies and bowling,• Ferguson said. •Yeah I was bowling, too. ·1 used to be halfway decent, but l bowled a 58 and could barely pick up the ball • A pretty amazing schedule by anyone's standards, and more amazing when you know Ferguson had been in the hospital the previous Wednesday through Sattudayforhis monthly pilgrimage. By Richard Dunn, Daift Pilot COSTA MESA -Anyone who says they don't like winning is crazy, or lying Not everyone, though, can win, and Costa Mesa Hlgh boys soc· cer coach Mike Dunn understands this He just hopes that his players will understand, too. Getting extra out of the program -rather than focusing on wins and losses, and where you finish in the Pacific Coast League -is Dunn's primary concern as he embarks upon his inaugural season as a high school varsity coach, following years of service on the youth level. "They are trying hard, H Dunn, former member of the City of Costa Mesa's Planning Commission, said of his players. ·111e talent's just not qwte there. Not everybody can win league, but I think we're having a good time, and that's exactly my focus. When the season's over. my hope is that they would wish they had another day out there It's hard for them, losing ti.me alter time.~ In addition to a shaky economic climate which hinders the program, the Mustangs are 1-6-0 m the preseason, beating PCL foe University, 1-0, m the Irvine Tournament Four of their losses came against Orange County powers Santiago, San Cemente, Fountain Valley and Woodbndge. "It's quite a tjlallenge. It's a lot different than I anticipated," Dunn said of his Mustangs, who open play in the Magnolia Tournament on Tues- day. "The kids are a lot fun. l enjoy the boys. But the demographics are a challenge. The lack of parental support. is amazing. The school gives you $300 and you have to raise the rest. It's an eye- opener •1t•s fun, but it's tough over there Some of the parents are struggling and the kids have to work 1 don't think we've played a game with all of our kids. It's not that they want to go to work, they have to go to work. It's a real struggle econonu- cally for some of them." Soccer balls, uniforms, nets and tourney fees add up qwckly. Next year, Dunn hopes to lure more than four parents to the booster meeting On the field, the Mustangs feature a couple of club players, along with returning goalie Carlos Loza, who enjoyed a solid year as a sophomore Senior Jared Call, a center/midfielder, is prob- ably Mesa's top scoring threat, though no player bas more than one goal thus far. •He's a guy who works hard the whole game," Dunn said of Call. Senior stopper Casey Chapm and {reshmdn sweeper David ltan are two of Mesa's finest. "For a freshman, he's way ahead of everybody,· Dunn said of nan, who plays club soccer for the Orange County Uruted 15-and-under team. Other members include Silvo Alderene, Juan Escobar, John Lama, Jose Carballo, Amabor Pine- da, Abdon Ra.nurez, Ricardo Valdez, John-Lewis Bescanon and Gustavo Ojeda. "We only graduate three guys, so hopefully more guys will be back next year," Dunn said "I think Estancia should win it all (in PCL) Uus year. They've got a real good team and they've beat some good teams. Estanoa and Laguna Hills are very tough Down there (Laguna Hills) the club programs are pretty strong, and once you have a program that's winning, good players want to go there."
