T he size of the boat isn't as important
as the size of the heart behind·it. Al
Larson had no grandchildren of his
own. but evexy year, as his boatyard work
slacked off just before Christmas, he went
into the toy boat business, his employees
building a flotilla of little boats and planes
to be donated to needy children during
the holidays. When be retired and sold his
business to Blue Moon Marine, the toy
boat tradition continued.
Al Larson built his first boat at 15. Dur-
ing World War ll, he worked in Bethlehem
Steel Co.'s floating dry dock in San Pedro.
As a Balboa Peninsula resident, he com-
muted to San Pedro during black-out reg-
ulations -no headlights before daybreak
and after dark.
In 1947, a small ship and boat repair
ydzd opened on Coast Highway's Nautical
Mile known as Al and Praz, operated by
Al Larson and Fraz Holford. Larson had
operated a boat and cabinet shop in the
Bohman Shipyard next door a.nd Holford
was a painter there, and they bad set up
their own shipyard to perform quality
shipwright and painting for local boat
owners.
The partnership dissolved a few years
later when Holford moved away and Lar-
son's Shipyard came into being. Rather
than lay off his employees during the slow
period just before the holiday, Al Larson
began bis stint as a Ca.llf omia outpOst for
Santa's Elves, Marine Division.

CHECKING OUT SOME OF THE FIELD WITH COAST CLASSIC LOOMING
CORONA DEi! MAR SEA KINGS
• Sea Kings are alw.a'ys
tough(er) to deal with
when they .take the floor
at Estancia High.
" For Corona del Mar High's Sea
Kings, one of the original
teams in the Daily Pilot Coast
Classic at Estancia, it's almost a
bome away from home.
"I like it because it's a great
local tournament, the
"Our football guys are still
making the transition,• Orris
added. "We need to be more
aggressive offensively and play
with more enthusiasm. We need
to get the ball to Darren MacDon-
ald (6-foot-4) more, and he needs
to step out from the basket more,
because he hasn't been getting
enough opportunities offensive-
ly."
Senior forward Brian Coleman
(6-4), CdM's top scoring and
competition's always r-------. rebounding threat, is
averaging 19.2 points
per game, while 6-4
senior Adam Klinke is
averaging 12.3 ppg.
first-rate and it's in the
area," CdM Coach Paul
Orris said. "I not only can
coach games there and
scout games there, as
well as scout in the sur-
rounding tournaments,
but Estancia has always
been a special place for
us to play. It's kind of our

"Evans and Klinke
need to step up and be
consistent for us,· Orris
said. "There are some others who
may step in and get more time,
like Jimmy Keane and Scott
Shimer, who goes in and gives it
everything he has. (Shimer) may
be limited, and be may not have
tbe athletic basketball ability that
some of them have, but he gives
every ounce of his energy. I go a
long ways with that kind of ener-
gy and hustle.·
because we've played
the majority of our neutral-site
CIP games there.
"I think in many years, it's giv-
en us an advantage playing at
Estancia, because after playing
four games there in tbe earlier
part of the year, you're more
familiar with the environment."
CdM, which lost to Rialto in
the opening round last year in the
Coast Classic, plays Dana Hills on
Wednesday (4:10 p.m.).
Rialto lost a game to A.B.

biggest problems at
Edison was that it seeme4 we
would always get to the third
round and Newport Harbor
would usually beat us.•
In the 10 previous years of
the tournament, EdiSon has won
it three times (1987, '89 and '94),
more than any other school.
Hirst's Sailors of 1995-96,
however, aren't exactly like
those championship Edison
teams. But they're getting there.
Seruor post player Chad
Coluccio is the Sailors' leeding
scorer, averaging 9.7 points per
game, while 6-6 Wes Badorek
(7 .8 ppg) is solid at times. Peter
Cunningham, a three-point
threat, starts at the three spot.
while Cory Glass is a solid all·
around player.
The Sea Kings (5-5), who open
pool play against Rialto on Tues-
day (5:50 p.m.), have been incon-
sistent this season, though four of
their key players came out late
from football. "We've been hot
and cold,• said Orris, whose team
lost to Laguna Beach in a non-
league game Wednesday, 58-47,
after defeating the Artists three
weeks earlier without a full
squad.
Miller (Fontana) last week, 112-

"We couldn't score 104 points in
two games against ourselves."

ln fact, Hirst has been
"switchi.Dg some things
around,• such as calling up
underclassmen from the pro-
gram's lower levels to put a
spark in what has otherwise
been a difficult preseason (4-8),
The Tars, though, suffered an
untimely loss on Tuesday, when
sophomore Scott Archbold
sprained his left ankle. Arch-

most collSistent 'performer from
the perilneter, shooting 62%.

CHARGERS .....,..,____..._
Chargers
have habit
of excelling
One of the original teams in the Dai-
ly Pilot Coast Classic, Edison
High. is also the most successful.
Coach Jon Borchert's Chargers
entered last year's tournament with a
losing record (4-6) before reeling off
four consecutive victories to win their
third Coast Classic championship.
The Chargers have played in the
Estancia High-hosted event since the
inception in 1985, when Ken Ammann
earned all-tournament and later that
season led the Chargers to a neutral-
site ClP playoff victory over Long
Beach Poly at Estancia.
·we've always played well in the
tournament; we like Estancia High
School,• said Borchert, whose squad
defeated Rialto in last year's final, 48-
47, on Darren Wynns' game-winning
shot. •Whenever we get a chance for a
playoff game at a neutral site, and
we're the home team, we like to play
there. Whenever we can, we'll play
there.•
Edison, which also won Coast Clas-
stc titles in 1987 and 1989, went 5-4 in
its first nine games this sea.son and is
expected to perform well again in this
year's Classic.
The Chargers open agalnst Hoover

• All those tieavyweights
of a year ago (i.e. Murray)
a.re long gone, but hardly
forgotten by Panther fans.
l A'Then Antioch High made fts V V ·inaugural appearance in the
Daily Pilot Coast Classic last year,
most everyone was in awe of the
weapoJlS the 'panthers brought
with them from the Bay Area.
They were tabbed as one of
the favorites, led by 6-!oot-4 Mar-
cus Murray, \b~ brother of Lam-
ond Murray and the cousin of 1\-a-
cy Murray. Murray, an 4ll-tourna-
ment choice last year, was also
named the Bay Valley Athletic
League Player of the Year, aver-
aging 21 points and 11 rebounds
a game.
But things have changed this
season for the Panthers (1-6), who
lost nine of their 12 players to
graduation, including Murray.
They were even in first place
last season in their league, follow-
ing the first round, but lost their
final three -including two at the
buzzer -to drop to fifth, ea.ming
a first-round North Coast Section
playoff game against 1op-seeded
Bishop O'Dowd.
It hasn't been the same ~f:e
for Antioch Coach Bob Fisher,
whose squad will travel further·
th.an any other for the Coast Clas-
sic.
"We've been struggling a little
bit," Fisher said. "We're a young
team and we graduated almost
everybody. We're having trouble
finding a way to win, but we're
playing people close.
"We really enjoyed the tourna-
ment last year, and that's one of
the reasons why we decided to
come back. Usually, we travel
every other year, because we like
to see different schools in the
Southern California area. r know
there are some good teams down
there. Some of those teams in this
tournament would do really well
GLENDALE HOOVER TORNADOES
Tornadoes breeze in with the hook shot
• Kirt Kohlmeier has
brought Hoover to the
tourney since inception.
For basketball traditionalists,
Hoover High of Glendale will
be your team to watch in the Dai-
ly Pilot Coast Classic.
Call it a throwback to the
George Mikan days
"We've been working on a
book shot,• said Hoover Coach
Kirt Kohlmeier, in his 17th season
with the Tornadoes, whose begin-
ning in the tournament dates
back to the origmal years.
Andrew Russell, Hoover's 6-
f oot-4 junior center, 1S no Mikan
or Jabbar, but three or four times
a game, he'll try Kohlmeier's
favonte shot. ·u we get to about 10 hook
shots a game, I'll be happy,•
Kohlmeier said. "I feel it's the best
shot in basketball. When we've
got them inside, that's what l
want them to shoot. When you're
facing the basket and going
toward the basket, if you miss the
shot, you're going toward it and
you can get it back in."
Old-fashioned shots aren't all
that Kohhneier is known for. He's
been aiticized. be said, for play-
ing perennial state and LA Qty
powerhouse Crenshaw the past
two seasons.
"Hey, I've got Muir and
Pasadena in our league (Pacific),
so I can't play nice guys, I've got
to play some people, so we know
what to do for league," he said.
"I've seen it pay dividends at cer-
tain times. People say. 'Maybe
you should play some pansies.'
But I don't know. In basketball.
you've got to go out and play, so
we played Crenshaw twice.
"That's why I play in this tour-
nament, because there are good
teams. The people are very com-
teous, it's a well-run tournament,
and we enjoy going down there.
Everyone's courteous, 'including
the people who run the snack
stands and coaches' room. They
do a good JOb and I appreciate it.•
.. For fr~e . •
Hoover, 4-4 in its first eight
games, has struggled here in the
past. It has never finished in the
top three or won a consolation
title. Last year, when the Torna-
does went 1-3, they lost to Stock-
dale in a consolation game, 59-54,
the Mustangs' inaugural victim in
eight Coast Classic games.
But the Tornadoes, who fin-
ished 9-14 last season, 0-10 in the
Pacific League, had a fme sum-
mer, going 14-1. "But we haven't
been able to get things to click
the way we want them to right
now,· Kohlmeier said. ·1 don't
know how the chemistry has
changed since the summer."
ln addition to Russell, Hoover
starts Arbi Baghdasarian (point),
Eric Jenkms (two), 6-4 sophomore
Mark Hull (three) and power for-
ward Hamlet Azanan.
• "I like this tournament,
because it gets us ready for
league,• Kohlmeier said. "We
play all the teams tough, but
there are no blowouts.•

FRONT
Anyone who drives a front-
drive automobile should be
familiar with the fact that con-
stant velocity (CV) joints are
the primary drivetrain compon-
ents. Their function is to P!O-
vide power transfer to the front
wheels, as well as allow for
steering and suspension
movement. Packed in grease
and covered with rubber
boots, the CV joints should be
regularly inspected for leaks
and cracks. In the event that
the boots deteriorate and
begin to leak grease, they will
splatter grease on the inside
of the wheel and on the sus-
pension. Evidence of this
splattering will not be obvious
from the outside of the vehicle
and must be viewed from ·
underneath. For this reason, it
is a good idea to have the CV
joints on front-drive cars
inspected at every oil change
or 3,000 miles. Replacing a
boot immediately after a leak
or crack is found costs a frac-
tion of what it would otherwise'
cost to replace a cy·joint.
A suspicious grinding noise
as you turn can signal a need
for a new CV joint. so It's best
to check your boots r8f(llarly
to avoid having to replace this
part. Tradition in our business ' means auto live service•
