COSTA MESA -On Chnst-

each other.
Standing in front of a liquor
store on Harbor Boulevard, Jim
and Vicki (they declined to give
their last names) talked of their
goals for 1996. They have only
one -to get off the streets. The
homeless couple, who have
been together almost two years,
spent the holiday trying to col-
lect enough change to ~ecure a
dry place to spend t):$e night.

Every day,
the two can
be seen near
the liquor

for handouts
or talking to
each other. ·
They are
rarely apart.
When they
speak, Jim
will often

"The holidays are pretty
much the same as any other
time," Jim said. •
"Except it's colder," Vicki hn-
ished.
"A lot of the churches will
give out food and other things
around Ch.ristmas," Jim said
"But we can't store the food,"
Vicki added. "It's perishable,
and it'll start to attract rats after
a while.~
The couple speak in the
weary tones of people who have
been down too long, who have
lost hope of victory a thousand
def eats ago. Both claim they
don't use drugs or alcohol. Vicki
said her destitute condition was
a matter of simple economics.
"I was going to school to be a
nurse and was on general relief,"
she s&d. "Then the government
cut my monthly check by $200,
and I lost my apartment."
Jim's story IS darker.

Costa Mesa resident and stand-up comedian Sam Fedele, 36, treats daughten Nlkld, 2, and Sam, 6, to a Ure-swing ride ln TeWlnkle Park recently.
'Mr. Mom' by day, c9median by night
HE IS
Sam Fedele is a 36-year-old Costa Mesa father of two
who fled the fast track of the business world for a career
making people laugh as a stand-up comedian. He start-
ed doing comedy part time four years ago, but this is the
first year be has been a full-time comic.
"I hated my job and didn't want to get up and go to
work -it was mundane," said Fedele, who has always
wanted to be a comedian.
So the former class clown gave up his partnership in a
successful blueprint company to be "Mr. Mom" by day
and a comedian by night and hasn't looked back since.
"I'm a 10-times nicer person," he said. "It's been hard
but I wouldn't give it up. It's the greatest thing in the
world."
DOWN FUNNY LANE
The transition from being a businessman to a comic
and Mr. Mom was difficult and different but worth it,
Fedele said.
"It's hard," Fedele said. "I spent six yea.rs in the Marines
and nothing is ever as hard as what I do in the day.•
Fedele starts his day at 6:30 a.m. -no matter how late
he was out the night before performing in a club -to get
his two little girls Nikki, 2, and Sam, 6, up, fed and off to
the babysitter.
After dropping his daughters off, Fedele returns

housework duties must be done before his wife, Kim-

to be Mr. Funny.
•The glamoui part is at night, the day is drudgery,•
Fedele said, laughing.

IN THE ACT
Fedele spends several nights a week in clubs around
Orange County and has performed at the Galaxy in Cos-
ta Mesa, the Irvine and Brea Improvs and the Coach
House in San Juan capistrano to name a few. Oftentimes
be is on the road going to gigs in Las Vegas, Utah and
Wyoming. His goal is to one day be a headliner or fea-
ture act.
What does he use for material? Life.
"Life is fodder,• Fedele said. "I've gone from being a
rough and tumble jock-marine, to a Srownie leader."
Not only does Fedele talk about how he, •was a
marine and now is a big fat babysitter guy,• but family
life, relationships between men and women and topical

MAKE THEM LAUGH
Going after his dream and liking the results, makes
Fedele's early years of paying his, auM aoing comedy at
"open mike night" at restaurants, coffee shops and piz-
za parlors seem like something to laugh about.
•1t•s been worth the sacrifice and then some," he said.

Collins then dropped that

Together they brought the

Balboa wanted the Pacific

About that time Collins start-

Collins then acquired a small

• Stockdale Coach Dean
Andrea, on why his team likes the

a terrific experience, the kids love
it. They love being down there,
everything about it, starting with
the officiating. That's the first
thing they say ... Most of them
aren't aware of what even exists
down there. We're bringing lots of
parents, the school principal and
vice principal, because they've
heard so much about it. It's a
growing phenomenon up here.~

should've beaten them last year."
BUCCANEERS
To11mey favorite
8 Bellflower is the team to
beat, so they say.
If Bellflower High has any weak-
ness, it's when the Buccaneers
race ahead with a sizable lead,
then get a little too sell-assured
and start turning over the ball.
Aside from that, •When we
play well, to be frank, we're pret-
ty good,• BeWlower basketball
coach John Downum said.
The Bucs (8-2) enter the 11th
annual Daily Pilot Coast Classic
for the first time, as well as
fa vorites to win it all on Saturday.
They began the season with a
loss against a tough Centennial
(Compton) team, then reeled off
e1ght consecutive victories.
before losing in the final of the
Crescenta Valley Tournament
a gamst the host Falcons Dec. 15.
The Bucs return four starters
from last year's team that ended
17-9, reached the CIF Southern
S<'Ction Division lll-AA quarterfi-
nals, losing to eventual final.1st
Dos Pueblos, and finished second
in the Suburban League belund
pPrennial section power Artesia.
Leading the way for Bellflower
ll. Kelvin Gibbs, a 6-foot-6 senior
center who averages 20 points
and 12 rebounds a game. Last
year, Gibbs was a second-team
All-CIF Division m choice, aver-
aging 15 points, 10 boards and
four blocked shots a game.
"He's also the best-passing big
man I've seen in a long time,•
Downum said. ·He'll bong the
ball up the court if we need him to
on the press.•
Gibbs, being recruited by vir-
tually every major college on the
West Coast, has an arm span of 7-
f oot-3, according to Downum.
"God has really blessed him, H
Downum said. "He's only 17, so
imagine if b.e could get two more
inches. He's got a build that can
carry more muscle, and this ls
what I think (four-year colleges)

The Buccaneers also have
point guard Ardis Curtis, a first-
team All-Suburban League
choice last year as a sophomore
wb.o averages five assJSts a con-
test this season.
Rashard Richardson, a senior
who averages 12 ppg. is the two
guard, while 6-3 senior Mike
