• Fellow Rat Pack membe r Joey Bishop mourns the p assing of friend, crooner and comedian Dean Martin.
By Evan Henerson, Daily Piiot
LIDO ISLE -Joey Bishop took the phone
call at 1 a.m. Christmas morning. The caller
never identified himself, Bishop said.
M He said, 'I have some bad news. Dean
Martin passed away this morning at 3:30 a.m .
His wife was at his side,'" Bishop said during
a Tuesday interview in his Udo Island home.
"I said thank you. And I broke down.
"Dean died on Christmas morning and I
know he's going to heaven. So won't that be a
nice Ghristmas up in heaven."
A room on the second story of Bishop's
home is covered in wall-to-wall memorabilia.
Movie stills, plaques and other mementos
recall the days of the Rat Pack, a group of
entertainers including Ftank Sinatra, Sammy
Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford who golfed and
performed together. With Martin's death Mon-
day -of respiratory failure at the age of 78 -
Bishop and Sinatra are the Pack's last sUJ'Vlv-
ing members.
Bishop first saw Martin perform al a
Philadelphia nightclub in 1942. After the
introduction, Martin entered lo a Bolero lap
number.
"The guy was brilliant,• said Bishop, who
went backstage to express his appreciation.
He would not encounter Martin again until
1947 after Martin had teamed up with fellow
comedian Jerry Lewis.
"Whal I admired most about Dean was his
. honesty," Bishop said. "He would not allow
himsell to do anything that seemed even
slightly phony. I think that's the part of show
business be disliked the most, having to pre-
tend he was really happy to be somewhere.•
AlthoU'gh Martin frequently played a
drunk, the comedian never drank on stage or
before high-stakes golf matches, Bishop said.
Martin carried a J&B bottle which was filled
with apple cider. When Bishop borrowed the
bottle on one occasion, Martin advised him to
"grimace" every time he took a swig.
And jokes came easily at the "drunk" Mar-
tin's expense. Emcees introduced Martin as
coming •direct from the bar.•

Mission: Impossible: Finding parki,ng at shoppers, paradise
I circle the mall like a tiger
stalking its prey. My assign-
ment seemed simple enough:
go to South Coast Plaza and
talk to crazy shoppers battling
the after-Chri.stmas crowds.
What became the problem -
and took more time than the
actual assignment -was finding
a small stall for my Honda CRX
somewhere within a mile of the
shoppers' paradise.
It didn't have to be large -
any nine-foot stretch of curb
would do, as long as it wasn't
painted blue, red or yellow.
I had planned to park a good
distance from the stores, in the
last mall parking space if I had
to, and walk from there. It didn't
seem that far-fetched an idea.
12:30 p.m . Plan A -Recon-
naissance.
ju lie
·ross cannon
I circle the mall once to get
an idea of where the biggest
traffic concentrations are so I
know where to avoid. It's hope-
less, I conclude. Better to just
plunge in.
12:37 p.m. Plan B.
1 enter the shopping arena at
the Sunflower Avenue entrance
by Nordstrom. Big mistake.
This, apparently, is where all
the other carloads of shoppers
have decided to begin their
hunt as well.
Five minutes tick on my
watch before my CRX crawls to
the first stop sign.
12:45 p.m. Plan C.
The green valet parking
signs look mighty tempting.
12:46 p .m. Plan D.
All right. It's time to get seri-
ous. The AAA and •My kid beat
up your honor student• stickers
on the dirty blue Mustang
trudging along tn front of me are
beginning to get annoying.
Skip the outdoor parking -
I'm heading straight for my
secret refuge of parking spaces
in the garage next to Nordstrom
and Bullock's. They're never
full, not even on Cbrl.stmas Eve.
1be cars before me herd into
the lower level so I race to the top
at speeds topping 10 mph. rm
really moving now. Then I join
another endless line of brake
lights leading onto the upper deck.
12:55 p.m. Plan ?
I've lost my sense of direction.
l head down into the bowels of
the parking garage to the lower,
lower level by Bullock's. This is
the closest I've come to an actu-
al store entrance. Giddy with
excitement. I dedde to follow a
shopper on the way to his car.
I stalk him slowly as he
weaves back and forth, trying to
remember where bis car is. He
perks up. He remembers. Hal-
lelujah.
He walks determined toward
a green Honda Accord, and I
realize my search is over.
Just as Mr. Honda approach-
es the driver's side, keys in
hand, he ducks down the stair-
way leading to the lower, lower,
lower level, where other cars
are waiting to gobble up his
space.
Just as I'm about to double-
park, someone taps on my win-
dow. A middle-aged woman
with a pair of toddlers smiles
and PQints to her car, just a few
stalls down.

Costa Mesa police seek
man in alleged rape
Little voice told me to · buy tacky Christmas memento
By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -A 21-year-
old woman waiting at a bus stop
on Harbor Boulevard Christmas
Day was picked up by a man
who allegedly raped her twice
before she escaped.
_ The woman, who police said
is not from this country, was
waitmg for a bu$ at Harbor
Boulevard south of Scenic
Avenue-when a man driving a
white, two-door car 'stopped
and forced the woman into the
vehicle, pollce said.
The man then allegedly
drove the woman to a business
complex where he allegedly
raped her with a foreign object,
then took her to an unknown
park off of a freeway and raped
her a second time, Costa Mesa
police said.
The man then reportedly
drove the woman around and
eventually stopped at a gas sta-
tion where the victim escaped,
police said. The woman was
picked up later by Santa Ana
police who found her walking
around lost m Santa Ana,
police said.
Eventually, after talking to
the disoriented victim who
could not speak English, San-
ta Ana authorities determined
the crime occurred in Costa
Mesa and reported it to Costa
Mesa police at 12:42 a.m.
Tuesday.
The exact time of the rapes is
unknown, however, they
occurred sometime on Christ-
mas Day, police said.
The rapist is described as a
white male in his early to mid
30s, 5 feel 10 inches tall and
weighing 190 to 200 pounds.

no protective covering and the
dish was covered with dust
Daniel \tltimatety said he'd part
with it for $5 and I'll bet I could
have bargained him even lower.
All very amusing, I said, but
if I had to listen to "Hol Hot Hol
Meny Kithmu, • more than once
in my home, f would chuck the
thing out the first Qpen window.
"It has an on/off switch,•
Daniel begged. "You can turn
off the noise.•
The dish was an antique.
Once the store bad purchased a
whole crate-full of talking can-
dy dishes for about $8 a pop.
This was the last one and
Daniel bad no idea bow long it
had been there.
"But look at this bar code,•
he said. "That code is from
1983."
I was sold. A huge grin
spread across my face.
"I'll tell you why I'm going to
buy this," I said. "I'm a reporter
with the Daily Pilot newspaper
and I'm going to write a story
about this dish.·
A look of horror swept over
his face. He looked at me as if I
had suggested disemboweling
his cat and stuffing it with
mistletoe. •ob, you can't! You'd get me
in such trouble,• Daniel said,
•Why would you want to write
about this?•
It wasn't every day, I
explamed, that a person discov-
ered the world's tackiest item,
that a store manager was practi-
cally paying a customer to take
it away and that the thing may
have been on the shell for 13
years. This story had to be told.
Now Daniel was a bit wor-
ried. I'd have to talk with the
store's corporate offices. Man-
agers weren't supposed to dis-
count items, etc. Would I please
reconsider.
Well, I wasn't prepared to get
someone fired over Christmas
(I'll leave such things to Orange :
County). So I agreed not to
identify the store or give
Daniel's last name. My Christ-
mas story became a column. We
chatted some more I found tum '
quite personable.
I took the dish home and
I
filled it up with M and M's. It
will probably remain in my
household until the next time I
I
attend a wrute elephant party
So here's wishing you a
belated Merry Klthmu, Damel.
I may have paid $5 for that
dish, but, as far as I'm con-
cerned, its anecdotal value is
pnceless.

• Rialto feels the effects
of Sea Kings' triangle
offense in Daily Pilot
Coast Classic opener.
By Richard Dunn, Dally Piiot
COSTA MESA -Corona del
Mar High's Sea Kings, forever
successful with its three·man tri·
dngle offense, got even better
with it Tuesday in the Daily Pilot
Coast Classic pool-play basket-
ball opener against Rialto.
With Bnan Coleman, Adam
Klinke and Darren MacDonald
shooting from nowhere outside
the paint, Cd.M shot a blazing
65% trom the field (26 or 40), as
the Sea Kings (6-5) exhibited an
offensive clinic for fast break-
mmded Rialto, breakmg the
Knights' full-court press
throughout, and won easily, 72-
63, at Estancia High.
After sinking 10 of 11 from
the field in the third quarter to
build their biggest lead of the
game (56·43), the Sea Kings
calmly put away the Knights (3·
7) at the free-throw line in the
fourth, sinking 12 of 14.
Cd.M, which plays Dana Hills
today at 4:10 p .m. in pool play,
finished 19 of 23 from the line,
led by Klinke, who scored a sea-
son-high 31 points, including 11
of 13 from the stripe, 9 of 10 m
the final eight minutes.
Klinke, a 6·foot·4 senior, also
had nine rebounds, two assists
and two blocks, while Coleman
added 23 points, 12 boards and
five assists. MacDonald had 12
points.
"We've changed our offense
against the zone," CdM Coach
Paul Orris said. ·we had a three-
man rotation, and we're still in a
three·man rotation, but we're
emphasizing our big guys.
"Coleman played a huge
game, and Brad Evans and Nick
Friend played a good game in
terms of taking care of the ball
and getting us in our offense,
and we got the ball where we
want to get it in. Our scorers
should be Klinke, Coleman and
MacDonald."
Rialto, which reached the
Coast Classic final last year, was
going with three new starters on
the floor, mainly because of a
lack of execution. ·r·m sick of
