During the first week of
December, the Ramya Hari,

Volunteers of the month are Vicky

We appreciate their dedication to
our school. Our Red Ribbon Week
was a great success, Superintendent
Mac Bernd, Mayor Joe Erickson,
Police Chief, Dave Snowden, and
the band Pitzu were among the
honored guests at our traditional
barbecue. Dyan Fitzhugh deserves
many thanks for her coordination of
the week's adivities.
Paularino School students are
reading up a storm. We continue
to work toward our goal of
300,000 minutes for the first
semester. Our parent coordina ·
tors Gay Geiser-Sandoval and

counting student minutes and

Tue key to change lies in a
collection of behavior modifica-
tion techniques described by TV
psychologist Joyce Brothers in
her new book, "Positive Plus."
By using positive and negative
reinforcement, pre-visualizion,
list-making,. "acting as if" poses
and other psychological tools,
individuals can make subtle
shifts to reduce seJf.-destructive
tendencies, Brothers believes.

A FRESH
NEW LOOK
• A parent chips in to heip paint his son's school.
BALBOA -When local resident and custom painter Earl
Johnson heard Newport Elementary School was in need of some
major painting, he decided to chip in
Johnson and his son, Cory, a fourth grader at the beach-fiont
school. teamed up to contribute.
"I take a lot of pride in my work and one of the things is pride
in my col)l1Iluruty," Johnson said.
Armed with brushes and paint, pW'Chased through a gener-
ous donation from Fry's Market owners, Mike and LuAnn Drury,
Johnson went to work. ·
With help from Mark Christianson, a screenwriter and painter,
Johnson and his son have taken on the task of transforming the
formerly drab exterior into something fresh and colorlul.
And he's doing it for a cost less than one third of the estimat-
ed $30,000 it would have been.
Johnson hopes to have the majority of the painting finished
by Jan. 4 when the kids return to school. 'IJ)e total labor involved
is about three weeks or 180 hours. Fifteen gallons of paint were
needed for the trim and 180 gallons for the walls.
Others contributing to the project are Vista Paints, who sup-
plied Johnson with paint at a •special, special price."
And LuAnn Drury, along with Newport Elementary Principal
Bill Knight and the student council, are beading fund-raising
efforts to pay for the discounted paint job.
Some parents have also donated as much as $1,000 to the efforts.
"There's a lot of money, a lot of nice people and lots of ways
people can help," Johnson said.

I'd humbly suggest the Costa
Mesa Tourism and Promotlon

py slogan, scrap the loser logo
and try again. It's embarrassing,
for example, to create a special

fans with the cheesy #Multi

it. Northwestemers undoubted-
ly like cheesy stuff, but we
know the difference, don't we?
Here's how to get a great
new logo and generate some
national interest in Costa Mesa:

NEWPORT CENTER -Tommy

The Newport Beach Police
Department is underge>ing per-
sonnel changes involving both
human beings and animals. nus
week marked the final ltour of
duty for Tommy, a drug-sniffing
German shepherd who has been
with the Police Department tor
more than five years.
The 8 112-year-old dog will
retire to the home of his handler,
officer Jeff Cantrell. who returns
to the department's patrol division
in early 1996.
That canine team will be
replaced by former bike patrol
officer Mike Johnson and A.zir, a
2-year-old German shepherd
imported from Czechoslovakia.
Once Johnson and Azir complete
training, the team will begin
patrol in March of 1996.
Both the incoming and outgo-
ing teams met the media at a
Thursday morning gathering
Although they repeatedly obeyed
•sit" commands, the two dogs -
who are trained to be congenial
-were clearly anxious to meet
their new visitors. Tonuny in par-
ticular whined and paced while
Cantrell held his leash.
HI think he wants you guys to
pet him," Cantrell told the assem-
bled reporters and cameramen.
The department currently has
three K-9 teams and the dogs are
used primarily to sniff out drugs

and to find or track suspects. Each
dog knows approximately 20
commands, ranging from Hsit"

issued in German, Azir's in Czech.
Tommy's "highlights" over the
course of his five-year career
include detecting five ounces of
cocaine hidden behind the dash-
board of a pick-up truck and sniff-
ing out 12 P<?unds of marijuana in
the trunk of a car. I Although Alir won an award
in the Intemation~l Police
Olympics, he will have to go
through the same five-week
training program which all police
dogs undergo. Between training
and maintenance, the city invests
between $15,000 and $20,000 on
each dog.
Since the K-9 officers frequent-
ly give presentations to school chil-
dren and seruors, the dogs need to
be friendly and well-behaved.

COSTA ?vtESA -It was nostal-

with Coach Len Whitacre wel-
coming his former team (Villa

two-time All-Pacific Coast

Villa Park was more than
accommodating in a 52-23 Mus-

well, glad to be a part of it.

off the bench, but contributed six
rebounds and played in every
