Serving the Newport-Mesa community since 1907
I t was a •gloomy beginning, to be sure. The
county -the very icon of financial health and
an enduring symbol of the good life -had
been driven into bankruptcy, no better or rich-
er than just anothe r failed business trying to make a
go of it in the business-tough '90s.
dent Mike White was named coach of
the Oakland Raiders and an anony-
mous donor put up $18,000 to buy new
uniforms for the marching band at
Newport Harbor High.

Schools we re at risk. Cities were at risk. Prisoners
would have to be released. Roads and bridges
would be left to crumble slowly away. The apoc_~
lyptic forecasts seemed to get bleaker by the day.
But if the county was on the ropes .. its citizens
were much more resilient. A group of residents

come to me several times over
the last few months as I have, on
occasion, been visited by Dick·
ens-like ghosts of my conversa-
tions past, present and future.
The ghosts started to appear in
answer to questions that were
nagging at me. Questions ruch
as: When did I become so chatty?
At what point exactly did I start
finding it necessary to tell the
UPS man why I prefer L.L. Bean
over Land's End? When did I
assume the position of helping
people find the right word in the
middle of their sentence? Aild
when, oh Lord, when did I decide
it was my job, and mine alone, to
keep the conversation going?
Perhaps, I rationalized, I'm
feeling a generational hangover'
froIJl decades of over-expres~g
inner-most feelings, over-explain-
ing political views and. over-cri-
tiquing current cinema. But the
ghosts w~re much more specific.

THE MISSING SCRIP
When a Harbor View Elementary par-
ent misplaced nearly $24,000 in school
satp certtttcates1ast August. tlie Par-·
ent-Faculty Organization went into a
tailspin in Newport Beach.
The scrip, which are store certificates
of all denominations, represented the
organtzation's profit from a year's worth
of fund-raising. They had been packed
in a Federal Express envelope, ready to
be refunded for cash, when they van-
ished from parent Anita Jacobs' home .
Jacobs said she realized the pack-
age, which had been lying next to a
box of school materials in her house,
was missing when she went to pick it
up to mail it.
Unsure whether the scrip were tak-
en or lost, the PFO filed a claim with
its insurance company, American
Empire Surplus, but were denied.
After a brief suspension, the PFO
resumed its scrip program under the
guidance of former Harbor View PFO
vice president Carol Tether. Tether
