Center officials decided to ask the
city for permission to bang 130
banners on light poles in the

the center's 10th anniversary,

The center had planned to dis-

Police spokesman Sgt. Andy
Gonis said the ordinance is intend-
ed to prevent potential traffic acci-
dents caused when .oversized
vehicles block drivers' views.
"We've had a number of com-
plaints historically in residential
neighborhoods where these vehi-
cles are a safety hazard,~ Ganis said.
He said the department
receives about a dozen com-
plaints a month, though he knew
of no accidents attributed to over-
sized vehicles blocking Yie'ViS:.
The oty clerk and traffic affqirs
of.fices reported receiving several
calls from concerned RV owners,
and City Council members have
received about a dozen letters from
residents opposing the ordinance.
The victim, a fonner student at
Corona del Mar High· School,
went to police just three days
after she turned 16. She told
police she waited until she was an
adult to report the abuse because
she was worried about Schuster
having custody of her after it was
reported; that Schuster could lose
his job; and that the community
would back Schuster, not her,
Schulz testified.
Schuster and the girl's mother
separated three years ago and the
victim chose to live with Schuster
rather than her mother because
he was ·moTI! able ttnandally to
care for h er, and she did not get
along with her mother's boyfriend
who her mother was living with,
Schulz said. . •
The victim's boyfriend was the
first person with whom the victim
confided about the abuse, Schulz
said. The boyfriend convinced
her to tell a relative, who then
called police.
