The Talk of the Town Adult
Bookstore caused more than a lii-
tle talk and quite a bit of commu-
nity action in October 1980, when
plans to open the bookstore on
West Coast Highway were
announced. The city council
adopted an emergency resolution
outlawing adult bookstores, but
the hastily written ordin411ce bad
no prosecution provision in it.
City officials filed a lawsuit
against owner Thomas Wade and
asked the court to grant a tempo-
rary restraining order against the
bookstore. The judge set a hear-
ing for later that month.
.
And then I started to hear
the throngs cheering me on. I
could see the colored flags flap-
ping fwiously over the finish
line; the digital clock ticking
away my speed in microsec-
onds. I adjusted my Smith turbo
fan goggles and ripped over the
cornice in perfect parallel form.
To celebrate the opening of the
bookstore at 2930 West Coast
Highway, the owner waived the
usual 50 cent admission fee. He
said all his stock WilS not in yet, but
on order, and predicted that "New-
port Beach will be a great market.•

A pre-dawn fire at the book-·

opened destroyed .most of the

that arsonists had drilled a hole
through a wall of the building and
splashed gasoline inside to start
the blaze. There were no suspects.
Robert Burnham, Newport
Beach assistant city attorney, said
he was delighted by the news bf

to lock up the bookstore for good
A legal spokesman for the book-

COSTA MESA -After two
days of matches involving more
than 600 wrestlers, from 44 teams,
the final ·tjlampionshi_p match of
th~ Estancia Wrestliilg Tourna-
ment came down to Jason Deere,
a junior from Newport Harbor
High. versus senior Kelly Richard-
son of Millikan.
It was worth the wait as Deere,
one of th.e top-rated heavy-
weights in Orange County, took a
1-0 decision to win his second
suaight Estancia Tournament
division title to help the Sailors to
a 12th-place finish with 71.5
points.
Unseeded sophomore Rigo
Pinon finished third tn the 112-
pound division and Matt Large
was fifth among the 103-
-powideis for Newport. ~-
coache d by fOrmer Olympic
wrestler Joe Azevedo who lives in
.Costa Mesa.
Estancia had a nice showing as
the host, finishing ln the middle of
the field in 22nd place with 45
points.
Seruor Andres Barrios, who
entered as the No. 4 seed, held
true to form finishing in fourth to
lead Estancia.
Corona del Mar finished in .
42nd place with eight points •as
the Sea1<ings were knocked out
of the tournament after the first
day of competition.
Even the referees were excel-
lent with the likes of Jim Warren,
who has officiated in six. NCAA
championship tournaments: War-
ren is the golf coach at Newport
Harbor High, and a former bead
wrestling coach at Estancia.
In the heavyweight champi-
onship, Deere and Richardson
spent the first period probing for
openings. but neither of the two
235-plus pounders could make
any headway against each other.
Deere-started the seconU-peri-
