A fter six weeks away, Jafria

temporary paralysis, Ja.fria has been
out of school since Thanksgiving.
On Thanagiving Day, Jafria
spent several hours bouncing on a

Dana Point. On her way home. that

Her mother, Amy Thomburg, took
weeks off of her job to help rehabili-

identify the source of the paralysis,
doctors couldn't speculate on how •
long the condition would last.
But Jafria ma.de rapid progress.

in the classroom doors for wheel-
chair access and made special modi-
fications to the restrooms, too. The
district even had a nurse at the
school to make sure Jatria's first days
back went smooth.
But to everyone's pleasant sur-

L lke many filmmakers,
lume Turner ls more com-
fortable behind the cam-
era than ln front of it.
"I i.n.herited my late mother's
behmd-the-cameraness," she
saJd, bemoaning the fact that
unlike her father, former New-
port Beach mayor Clarence
Turner, she has never thought
herseU very photogenic.
But Turner's lack of confi-
dence stops there. The 33-year-
old who grew up in Newport
Beach IS currently busy packing
her bags to g9 to Utah, where
the independent feature fi!m
she produced. "Billy's Holly-
wood Screen Kiss,• will com-
pete in the famed Sundam:e
Film Festival that begins next
Thursday. The film is up
against 15 others in the feature-
length category.
Turner, a USC School of bn-
ema graduate, describes the
film as a love story. but not a
traditional HoUywood love sto-
ry, because unlike most of
those, the hero doesn't wind up
m the arms of his beloved. Nor
is the beloved of the usual gen-
d er.
The hlm's main chcuacter, Bil-
ly, IS a commerdal photograph-
er and movie buff. He hopes for
love on a grand HoUywood
scale when be meets a young
man named Gabriel. The ques-
tion, however. is il Gabriel is
gay. Or even interested.
"(Billy) has always wanted
that big romance,• Turner said.
Most of the film was shot
locally. and some may recog-
nize the rocky shore of Crystal
Cove, where Billy recreates the
famous scene in "From Here to
Eternity.• Only in this case, the
woman's role is played by a
drag queen.
Filming at the state park was
quite a challenge, Turner said.
She described how, in her
capacity as producer. she had
to navigate her large pickup up
and down steep and narrow
trails. .
•vou have to be guided by
the park ranger the first ten
times,• she said.

Newport Harbor High School graduate Irene Turner produced the lndependent film .. Billy's
Hollywood Screen Kiss, .. wbtch competes in the Sundance Fllm Festival beginning next week.
But by the end of the day. she
was a pro, and by the end of
the film's three-week shoot. she
had completed another stage in
the production of her first fea-
ture-length film.
Although she won't discuss
what the film cost to produce.
Turner did admit it was less
than what was spent on •ntan-
ic." -we couldn't shine James
Cameron's shoes for a. day on
our budget," she said.
Turner got involved in the
project through Its writer and
director. Tommy O'Haver, who
she met at USC.
Turner dabbled in theater
while at Newport Harbor Hlgh
School, playing such parts as
the second dead woman in ·our Town ~ but quickly dis·
covered her true talents lay
back.stage.
She went to Stanford and
majored in drama, and after
graduation returned to Orange
County. She continued in the-
ater, working as stage manager
in companies like Opera Pacific
and the La Jolla Playhouse, but
soon tired of the job, turning to
a d.lfierent medium -film
"I was fed up with not bemg
creative,· she s!lid. "Films com -
bine creativity with the techni-
cal."
T umer had always loved
movies. Owing the late
8~ stie and her mother,
Celia, even worked as movie
reviewers for the Daily Pilot.
"We both really loved 'Drug-
store Cowboy.'" Turner said.
Her mother encouraged her
interest in film.
"She was my big movie·
going companion,• she 88.ld.
"My father never read the Cal-
endar section (of the LA
Times}, my mother always did."
Celia Turner died last spring.
but not before the Academy
Awards. She and her daughter
watched them together in the
hospital room.
"She knew how important it
was to me." Turner said.
Turner will keep her mother
m mind when she goes to Sun-
dance next week. Touted by
many as the independent film-
makers vers1oir of the Oscars,
the festival, spearheaded by
Robert Redford, can bring
fame, U not fortune, to those
involved.
But although there is a lot rid·
mg on the outcome, Turner said
she is going to Utah mostly to
have a good time. BecAuse of
budget restraints, she said she
often had to miss out on the
perks durmg the filming, like a
day lrip to Catalina when !he
crew filmed from the Catalma
Express boat.
·1 never got to take advan·
tage or the good stuJr. • she
said
But that's OK. For Turner, it's
nothing 10 days hob-nobbing
with Redlord won't cure.

Newpon Betch/C.otu Mesa Daily Pdoc FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 1998
What would thiS world be without its ~dumb, laws?
D umb laws. Heaveri'knows
there's enough of them.
With the new year, there's
always a lot of hubbub about
dumb new laws -from Wash-
ington, Sacramento and, yes,
even city councils. I did some
homework and, I must say, the
old stuff on the books is hard to·
beat.
I'm sure you've. seen these
outbreaks of legislative dementia
from time to time like <this sensi-
ble state 14w from Kentuck}r: "No
female shall appear in a bathing
suit on any highway within the
state of Kentucky unless she is
escorted by at least two officers
or she is armed with a club."
An ordinance in Chico impos-
es a $500 fine on anyone deto-
nating nuclear weapons within
city limits. I think that's a good
law. We don't have one of those
in Costa Mesa, but I'll look into
it. The fine is a little stiff though.,
How about a warning for the first
offense,$250forthesecond,then
.
the full $500 for each offense
thereafter. In Maryland, it's We-
gal to enter a theater with a lion.

trial on molestation counts
• Convicted child molestor
from Newport Beach also
awaits trial in the murder
of C~ta Mesa boy who
disappeared in 1979.
By Christopher Goff ard Datly Pilot I
After months of judicial back-
and-forth, the man who was unlll .
recently Newport Beach's most
notorious sex crimmal will stand
trial on charges he molested
three underage Big Bear boys.
The 9th Circuit Court of
Appeals this week gave the
green light to criminal proceed-
ings against James Crummel,
~hose name entered headlines
last year when police posted
fliers describing him as a high-
risk sex predator, authorities
said.
.
Crummel faces six felony
counts in connection with three
boys he allegedly molested in
1987-88. While C rummel has
remained behind bars for the last
seven months, the case against
tum has been in legal limbo since
October whtle the court exam-
ined the defense's motion to dis-
miss the charges, aulhonlles
said. .
Deputy District Attorney
Deruse Trager-Dvorak, who 1s
prosecuting Crum.me), said a tn-
al-setting date is expected this
week. Crummel has pleaded not
guilty to the charges.
"I'm glad that we finally have
a decision, and we're going for-
ward," Trager-Dvorak said.
While Crum.me) was charged
with 15 child-molestation counts
in June, Superior Court Judge
Shahla S. Sabet dismissed eight
of them in September on the
grounds they were unconstitu-

tional owing to a statute of limi-
tations issue. The pro,secutor also
dismissed one count because it
replicated.another.
Authorities arrested Cnunmel
on the same charges in 1995, but
a judge threw out the case after
Crummel's attorney contended
the statute of lunitations bad
expired. A modification of the
law in 1997 led to his re-arrest.
Whatever the outcome of the
San Bernardino case, Crumm~l
must also face one count of mur-
der with special circumstances in
Riverside County.
The charge stems from the
death of Jamey Wilfred Trotter,
the 13-year-old t:osta Mesa boy
who d isappeared off Harbor
Boulevard on his 'fYay to school in
1979.
It wa's Crummel who reported
finding. Trotter's charred, frag-
mented remains near the Ortega
Highway in 1990.

en1oy the view the next six weeks
as his Eagles, unbeaten and top-
ranked in Orange County, set
about secunng the title for which
they appear preordained.
But while DeBusk's bunch is
an easy choice for
the top spot, severe
gridlock could
occur with the
entire five-team
chase pack, from
which any team
could occupy any
spot from second to
the cellar.
Newport Har-

first-team all-league selections.
He is joined in the b&clccourt by
explosive senior B~J:. Jameson

• Sailors appear to have
the foundation in place
for a long run in girls
water polo circles. ·
I t really shouldn't be much of
a surprise to anyone when
someone says. "Hey, did you
hear that Newport Harbor High 's
girls JV water polo team is
undefeated?•
The question is probably
returned with a shrug and an
"Oh ye(lh?• ·
Yeah.
The Sailors are off to an 8-0
start. It would've been 9-0, but
they turned the Sea View
League opener against
Woodbridge over to their
frosb-soph and novice teams
-which ended in a 13-2 romp
in favor of the Tars.
•1t looks like you have a
pretty good team, huh, Les?•
one might ask Coach Les Cutler ..
The tall, lean man puts his
hand on his chin, looks over the
pool and replies, •Yeah, we do."
In just its second year as a
competitive varsity sport at
Newport Harbor, girls wat~r polo
has taken off. with four teams on
its slate.
The varsity team. ranked
No. 6 in Orange County, is quite
strong with an 8-1 record to
prov~ i~. So, w~e it might ~ot be
tough, as well, it is a bit startling
to learn that most of the lower
level players also spend some
time on the varsity lineup, as
well.
Assistant Coach Brian
.){reutzk.arnp inserted sevetal of
bis JV players into the varsity
blowout of Woodbridge with o
of the stars being sophomore
~atherine Gregg.
Other factors ill the success of
the JV team are the strong
goalkeeping of sophomore Arin
Hendrickson, the setting of Carly
Wilson and the attacking abilities
of juniors Taryn Mast, Keirsten
Johnson and Tawny Bobbit.
Early in the season, the
Sailors were set to meet water
polo powerhouse Long Beach
