By Carolyn Miller, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -It's
been nearly a month, but the bru-
tality of the rape and rotibery tbat
occurred at a Coco's Restaurant
here has not been forgotten.
While opening the Coco's
Restaurant in Corona del Mar
early in the morning Dec 13, a
female manager was raped by a
gunman, who also robbed the
restaurant's safe before escaping
with another man who participat-
~ ed i.rr the -robbe1 y -btlt not -tile
rape, according to police.
The close-knit community was
appalled when they learned of
the crimes and several people
took it upon themselves to reach
out to the victim, a single parent,
in the form of letters, flowers or
money.
Some know the woman by
name and ffilSS her warm greet-
ings at Coco's. Others never met
her but were still inspired to help.
Among them were local busmess
owners and members of the
Corona del Mar Chamber of
Commerce, who are collecting
donatlons to provide for the vic-
tim and her family's future.
The Daily Not published arti-
cles fust about tlie crimes -the
suspects have still eluded capture
-followed by stories illustrating
how the community cares for the
victim and her family.
In response, the woman
mailed to the Daily Pilot the fol-
lowing letter of thanks to the
-community:
. I would like to thank the Coro-

merce the entire community, my
co-workers and loyal customers
for their heart-felt support for my

Mesa~ relations/Up with
Auitralian sister city
By Tina Borgatta. Daily Pilot
C OSTA MESA -After spending a
year in Australia beautifying
streetscapes and park lands along the
Hunter River corridor, ReLeaf Costa Mesa
founder John DeWitt now hopes to strength-
en the city's relationship with its "Aussie•
sister city.
In coming months, DeWitt will be meet-
ing with school district officials, business
owners and various organizations in hopes
of building a better relationship with Costa
Mesd 's sister city, Wyndham, which until
recently was known as Werribee.
DeWitt just finished a one-year contract
working as a landscape architect for the city of
Newcasffe'; New SoutllWales, wblc:h is aoout
..-O~~m-~rna.oar:n.-+lMm-118--4-------------:.__--.,...
spent November, his last month Down Under,
m the sister city, working as a townscape coor-
dinator by day and a Costa Mesa ambassador
by rlight. He met with groups on an almost
nightly basis, gauging their interest in learn-
ing more about Costa Mesa.
"I used that time to pull together a cross
directory that lists Australian and American
counterparts," said DeWitt, whose ReLeaf
Costa Mesa organization bas' planted hun-
dreds of trees throughout Costa Mesa.
"It lists government offices, schools, busi-
nesses, senior organizations, youth organi-
zations, service organizations. It's a cross
section of the entire community, both here
and over there.
"So now, if people here want to know
who their counterpcl!ts are in Australia, the
homework's done. AD they have to do is look
it up in the directory."
Now that he's back, DeWitt plans to work
on building exchange programs with orga-
nizations like the Boy Scouts, grade schools
and Ute Costa Mesa Art League.
"I W.ould like for the program to reach a
point where if a scouting group there has
plans to come out here, maybe their Costa
Mesa counterpart can hook up with them
and go camping in the Sjerras, •DeWitt said.
"And the Costa Mesa Art League has
been very interested in getting some type of
an art exchange program going. Now, Wyn-
dham's economic development unit and
their drts director has agreed to pull togeth-
er a crate of work from various artists down
there that are uniquely Australian, and they
will be shipping that up here for the Costa

South Coast Village studio.•
In the schools, DeWitt hopes to persuade
teachers to incorporate letter-writing or
communicating via the Internet in their stu-
dents' daily routine. He said he's already
approached the Wyndham school district
with his idea, and officials there say they
think it's great. And so do some Newport-
Mesa Unified School District officials.
"I 1hink it's a terrific idea," said school
board member Ed Decker. "I see it as a won-"-
derful way to utilize the technology that
we're putting into the schools to cross cultur-
al lines. It will give our students an opportu-
nity to interact with people on another conti-
nent. And to me, that's a wonderful thing."
Costa Mesa adopted Wyndham as its sis-
ter city back in 1987. But, the relationship
.
between the two cities has been very infor·
mal. DeWitt said he hopes the cross directo-
ry will help change th4t.
"There have been exchanges, but
they've been few and far between,• DeWitt
said. "The reason it's taken seven years to
really get swinging is Q.ecause when they've
been on their highs, we were on our lows
(eccmomically). But now, I think we're oper-
ating on line with one another.
"With this directory, we know who our
counterparts are, when's the best time to
call. All that's been worked out.
"So, from here on out, it should be like a
J-curve and shoot right up. As long as peo-
ple are willing to accept that there are social,
cultural and economic opportunities beyond
our neighborhoods, I think people will start
linking up rather quickly."

Summer-like weather draws

NEWPORT BEACH -With the

Bauer was watching a life-

Although the water was only
59 degrees, the a'ir temperature in
the high 70s and low 80s attract·
ed about 28,000 people wanting
to soak in the rays, Bauer said.
The glass-like conditions and
warm weather have been a winter

Earthquake reinforcements

•Steel structure alterations

nearly $2 million.

CdsTA MESA -City Hall
may have a new look before too
long, but it might not suit every-
one's taste.
The City Council on Monday will
choose ODe of three design plans
trust will give Costa Mesa's Civic
Center buildings the proper struc-
tural reinforcement to guard against
earthquake damage. But each of the
plans requires altering the exterior
of both City Hall and the Police
Department to varying degrees.
•None of the three designs
were what I would call great aes-
thetic wonders,• said Council-
woman Sandra Genis. "Then
again, the current look of City
Hall isn't any great aesthetic won-
der, either. "

One method
of reinforce-
ment would
outfit the exte-
rior of the
buildings with
steel-braced
frames, whicil
look similar to
scaffolding.
Another
method would Sandra Genis
beef up the
buildings' support structures with
concrete resisting frames, which
would leave the windows on City
Hall with an arch effect.
The third plan would use con-
crete shear walls to provide struc-
tural reinforcement and would
cover up a substantial amount of
window space.
"The shear walls, I thought,
looked more presentable from the
exterior,• Genis said. "But, we
would lose a lot of window space.
And, when you're in an office. all
day, it's nice to be able lo look out

a window and see if it's raining or
if it's sunny outside.•
Assistant City Engineer
Ernesto Munoz said staffers Will
reconunend the council consider
using the steel-braced frames for
City Hall at an approximate cost
of $1.2 million and then using the
eoncrete shear walls for the Police
Department for about $458,000
The other methods would be
more expensive, he said.
And, fbr Mayor Joe Erickson,
cost is an important factor to cQn-
sider.
"The Civic Center houses lhe
communication and safety ser-
vices that would be needed in case
of an earthquake or other emer-
gency,· Erickson said. "We need
to make those buildings safe m the
most cost-efficient manner. And
while I would like it to be attrac:
tive, I don't want to spend a lot of
money redesigning the building.
"The look of City Hall and oth-

don't want to create a Taj Mahal."

While the deferred mainte-

• Newport Harbor wins
high school division of
Rose Bowl Regatta.
TI year's Rose Bowl

collegiate teams competing in

Held at Alamitos Bay Yacht
Club in Long Beach, and hosted
by use,, the conditions played
havoc with the sailors, producing
some extremely inconsistent
scores.
But after all was said and
done, Newport Harbor High
once again emerged on top to
clinch the high school division
~--by 15 points. •
Sunny Southern California
lived up to its image last
weekend, as sailors experienced
record high temperatures while
in the East and Midwest
residents were suffering through
its worst snowstorm in history.
The teams from Georgetown,
Northwestern, Princeton and
lUfts were far from snowbound,
happily sailing in T shirts and
shorts in the last collegiate
regatta of the fall season.
Though the weather
cooperated, the breeze did not,
allowing only four races to be
run on Saturday aqd six races
on Sunday.
In the high school division,
Newport Harbor's N kept a
tight hold on the first-place
position throughout the series.
Their A division team of Mandy
McDonnell and Alison Hill,
never finished worse than
seventh, sealing their division
win in the last race with a
third-place showing.
ln B &vision, the Bishop
School's Paul Sanders and
Cheryl Greene of San Diego
kept their scores under ninth
to win, but Newport Harbor's
N team of Heather Porter and
Kassy Thompson finished just
three points behind to give
them the title by 15 points.
Corona del Mar and the
Newport Harbor vitrsity had
great regattas as well, with
CdM sailing into third and the
Newport varsity pulling into
fourth.
Sailing for Cd.M was Mike
Reicher and Justin Reeves in A
and Mike Barton with Rob Rader
and Kendra Wttzel in B. The
young team had an incredible
showing, being one of the most
consistent teams out on the
water.
The Newport varsity had
Patrick Hogan with Charlie
Boukather and Cryssa Byers
in A. Brian Bissell with Cryssa
Byers and Gray Dougherty in
B finished just five points
behind CdM for fourth.

CORONA DEL MAR -For the rest of the
Sea View League girls basketball season, if
Newport Harbor Higb's Sailors plan to gen-
erate a run to the CIF playoffs, they will
have to do it without junior point guard
Andree Verhulst. ,
They ha~ a good start Thursday night.
Verhulst, the Newport-Mesa District
Player of the Year last year, will be out of
the lineup from four-to-six weeks because
of a stress fracture in her left foot.
"We just found out (Thursday),~ said
Newport Harbor Coach Bob Dukus, who
improvised with four different players
bringing the ball up the floor, mostly
Colleen Eadie, in the Sailors'
53-47 victory over host Coro-
na del Mar, their 11th con-
secutive win against then
Back Bay rival, dating back
to 1990, when then-Cd.M
freshman Mollie Flint made
a game-winning basket with
five seconds left.
Though the Sea Kings
(14-5, 1-2 ln league), ranked
No. 9 in the CIF Division ID
poll, made a valiant come-
back in the second half,
there would be no such dra-

quarter built their advantage
to 12 points, the last with 2:24
on the clock when M.E. Clay·
ton scored to give them a 39-
27 edge.
That's when CoTona del
Mar made it interesting with
an 8-0 quarter-ending run.
sparked by junior Undsay
Warmington (22 points and
five steals).
CdM, which never led, fell
behind· by 12 again in ~e
fourth ,..quarter, 52-40, when
Alford made a pair of free
throws with 2:27 left.
•What bothers me is that
(the Sailors) didn't have their ace of aces, but we've got .__ ___ ..;..m;__,.._....._...._.
But the Sea Kings came
back again, as senior center
Jennifer Gardner scored

Garth Flint said. "That's going to be impor-tant..
While Eadie supervised the point on
Newport Harbor's offense, senior guards
Mindi Alford and ~chelle lOyfta provided
the sharpshooting in Verhulst's absence.
The Sailors (9-6, 2~ 1 ), ranked No. 8 in
CIF Division m, had an 11-point lead in the
second quarter, then twice in the tlµrd
from Warmington, then Warmington added
a steal and subsequent layup, then a three-
polnter with 1:10 to play.
Suddenly, the Tars led only 52-47. "It
was just too little too. late," said Flint,
whose team squandered opportunities
when under a minute was left.
The Sailors' depth, meanwhile, proved
vital.
•Tue way we were working it, if the
pressure was bard on Colleen, we would

addition to Alford and IGytta. •When we do
that, one fills the wing and we're in our
offense. We just need somebody on the
entry pass.
•(Verhulst) is a significant loss, but to
me, it's more significant for us not to wony
about it. We played 10 girls tonight, so
we're pretty deep. For 'everyone to step up'
is-our motto now.•
Eadie finished with 10 points, four
rebounds and two assists, while Alford bad
eight points and seven boards. Klytta
canned two three-pointers in the fourth
quarter to push Cd.M away and ended with
a team-high 12 points.
The Ta.rs had a 26-15 lead in the second,
following Breanna Badorek's basket inside
on a dish from Eadie with 3:13 on the clock,
before the Sea Kings pulled to within 29-22
at halftime.
Verhulst's left foot, according to Dulrus,
had been bothering her for several weeks.
She missed practice on Wednesday, before
Dukus found out the bad news.

COSTA tvfESA -While Costa Mesa
High appeared to be swallowing bard,
host Estancia simply sucked it up to rally
for a 40-36 Paci.fie Coast League girls bas-

Despite senior leader Jessica Waltz
having a sub-par first half, junior post
Jennifer McCartin weakened by illness,
junior Megan McCartin fighting a
sprained back, and sophomore Amy
Deming battling the biggest case of
nerves in her young varsity
bound the Mustangs, 22-11, after inter-

boards for the game.
"'Coach told us to get into it at half-

the game. 1 was way more nervous than
I'd ever been for a game, but that (fourth-

Waltz, who had just two

layups, then finished her-
self with a layin to cap an 8-

within 27-26 with 3:12 left

After Deming followed her own clutch

Estancia, ranked No. 6, one spot behind
Mesa in the CIF Southern Section Divi-

three ball from the right wing with 2:36

After Katie Grogan ended a Mesa scor-

the Eagle lead to 38-37, Waltz zig-zagged
down the lane, through the entire Mus-

Jennifer McCartin's two free throws

gave the Eagles their first lead, 30-29.
But Anderson answered with a pair of
foul shots 14 seconds later, and the 6-foot-

But the Mustangs missed their next

Tai-s score quic~y, hold· on fo:f 2-1 win over CdM
• Newport Harbor
. owns first io minutes,
and it's enough to
def eat Back Bay rival
Corona del Mar in Sea
View League conflict.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH-If you're a New-
port Harbor High fan and you arrived
late to Thursday's Sea View League girls
soreer matchup with Ba~ Bay rival
Corona del Mar, you'll just have to take it
on faith that the Tars won 2-1.
By 10 minutes into the game, New-
port had already scored both of its goals
• and both teams were settled into an
• ·entertaining rhythm of thrust and parry.·
•vou mean they al.ready scored
. twice?" said a swprised Newport par-
ent as he settled into his seat. "Maybe I
• should go back out and see if they score
again?"
He didn't go out, so we'll never
know. But then it
really didn't mat-
ter this time as
Newport had all
the goals it need-
ed to up its overall
record to 3-5-6
and 1-1-1 in
league play.
"I think both
teams were a little
too excted" lhe e

Dean Laird. "But
that's the way this
rivalry is."
In a game
-DEAN LAIRD • known for extend-
ed periods where
goals can be few and far between, the
Sailors started quickly. The· first goal-
, coming on a throw-in that bounced in
front of the CdM goal and caromed off
a Sea King player into the net with less
than one rninute gone.
Newport kept up the pressure, gain-
ing two more comer kicks that were
stopped by the Corona ~ense, before
being awarded a direct kick from about
20 yards out at about the 10-minute
mark. ·
Forward Jill Nelsen hooked her shot
directly at CdM goalie Heather Hritz
who had the ball hit her up-raised
hands and carry over her head into the
net for the second goal of the game.
It was a tough attempt for Hritz, who
was playing in place of Jordana
Havrilu.k, the regular goalie. Havrilu.k
dislocated her right elbow in Tuesday's
2-1 loss to El Toro and was on the side-
WRESTLING ESTANCIA
lines Thursday in a splint. She's lost for
the season. •
"We felt for 95% of the game we
were right there,• said Matt Etchison,
who is in his first year as coach of Coro-
na del Mar. "We're just not getting"'the
breaks. They scare, what 30 secQnds
into the game on a bad bounce?
"We just have to keep working bard
and we'll get there, but it's frustrating
for all of us right now.•
Corona was in full control the final 10
minutes, scoring its only goal on a cor-
ner tJrick that forward Lindsey Grubbs

found in front of the net and put m to
tighten the score, 2-1 .
CdM (5-10-1, 0-3 in league play) had
three more nice scoring opportunities in
the closing minutes, includmg a direct
kick on the final play of the game. 1\vo
of those shots were stopped by fresh-
man goalkeeper Jordan Fredriksen,
who escorted the final shot as it rolled
wide of the net.
"The last 10 minutes were panic,•
said Laird, who spent the previous
four seasons as an assistant at Coro-
na de l Mar before taking the head
job at Newport Harbor. •
·nus is a hard place to play and with
all the extra emotions of the rivalry it's
never a pretty game," Laird said. "1\vo
months ago we would have given that
game away and gotten a tie. We've
come a long way.·
On the other side of the field, Etchi-
son was busy consoling lus team after
the game." I know it burns, bwns
deeply,• he told them "I know you hate
to lose, but let's stay motivated and use
this game as a catalyst for the rest of the
season•
