"It really tells you a lot." HIGH FASHION King, who said she has always had an eye for clothes and style, used to work in the swanky New York City fashion industry. With a university degree in fashion merchandising, King worked in the showrooms of Donna Karan and Ralph La~en, where she showed the designed' new clothing lines to buyers lrom around the world. . After the closet make-over, the next step is for King to live out what is just about every woman's fantasy: Gettilig paid to shop with other people 's money. With King as a tour guide, clients pay $25 an hour for some in-store advice from a fashion expert while tearing through stores at South Coast' Plaza, Fashion lslantt and other local malls. While the job sounds like a lot of fun, from time to time King is faced with the touchy chore of telling a clien t that a beloved pink sweater or lime green jacket simply has got to go. Religious sects have proclaimed their connection to the alnughty and then faded in far less time. Politicians have thundered, then disappeared. Fashions have come and gone. Music has been relegat~ to memory. Dennis and Marton Pickens of Newport Beach celebrate 50 years of marriage tonight. Blow the trumpets: beat the drums. The Lido I.sle Yacht Club will be filled with 50 years of romance as two of the Orange Coast's most lovable folks celebrate, showing the rest of us the mean- ing and magic behind five decades of life together. It all began in Dallas, Texas, after the great war. Marion Pol- lard, a California native and a Santa Monica sweetheart, moved to Texas with he:-family while still in high school. She went on to attend Southern Methodist University, where Mari- on had her eye on Dennis, a Dal- las native who had returned from the Army Air Corps to attend Southern Methodist as well. "He paid no attention to her -not even a little," mused their daughter Alison McConnJck of Newport Beach, recounting the ' courtship of her parents. "My father had asked out every girl in my mother's sorority except my mother. And my mother was the one who was interested. "So my mother, who still has the same wicked sense of humor, made plans to meet with Dennis' sister Claire at their home to do some sorority work. She put on cute .little white starched shorts and a top to match, then literally draped herself across the thresh- old of the door to tus home.• jazzerrise caauu-11 Mon, wed, Fri, Sat· 8:30.im SUn . 9:~ Tues . 6:30pm. Dennis called Marion the next da'y and asked her for a date. Actually, be asked her to be his date at bis fraternity initiation. Following the ceremony, Dennis kissed Marion, his first date. As Marion puts it, "[it was) unheard of in those days but foretelling, definitely foretelling. He hasn't stopped kissing me," she reports happily. "Fifty years of kissing, in the morning wh~n he leaves the house and at night when h~ comes home. Never missed a day.~ A very special part of the cele- bration this evening on Lido Isle is that the entire wedding party of 50 years past will travel to New- port Beach to join in the dining, dancing and reminiscing as so stated on Mrs. Pickens' elegant creme and gold formal invitation to her very special half century tribute to the be.st love in America And what is even more spe- cial, fnends who joined Dennis . and Marion on their wedding day will join them in health and happiness on their 50th anniver- sary. LYNN MERLES Costa Mesa District should manage its money better My daughter goes to Costa Mesa High School. I have two older sons that graduated from the re . And I'm really disturbed every time Newport-Mesa says there's no money for raises. What I'm really disturbed about is the negative tone that comes out instead of the pt>sitive tone, HLet's see what we can do for the teachers." That's No. 1. No. 2, every district gets the same amount of money based on attendance so why does our dis- trict have less money than other districts to give the teachers rais- es. I don't know, maybe all the money goes to the Taj Mahal they built up in Costa Mesa and recently finished. But somebody needs to investigate and find out where the money 1s going. The other thing is, yes, we're losing good teache rs. As a matter of fact, about two years ago, a very good teacher at Costa Mesa High School was lost. He took a better job at Edison High School in Huntington Beach because the pay was better. He was supposed to teach advanced placement classes. He left and obviously the level of teaching went down. DAN GOLDMAN Costa Mesa Being smart means staying warm Please indulge me while I offer a few more words on Californians being called "Stupid, dumb and dense" by Anonymous m Mi~ gan. I checked the weather in the paper for Jan. 1. As we know, it was in the 70s and clear in Pasadena. In Michigan, the low was 12 and the high 41, with cloud.¥-s)tjes. Let's see ... we're still here and they're now back there. Who's really stupid, dumb and dense? STEVE SMrTH Costa Mesa local journalism will never be forgotten. COSTA MESA EMERGENCY TEAM . It seems pretty easy when you think of it. Pay d visit to your neighboring town and offer a top administrator more MAILBAG . money to come over to your side. But a groundswell of support for Mor- . rison in Huntington Beach prompted her to rethink her course and stay put. I • Generosity, charity are still alive in Newport-Mesa The people of Orange County -Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa -deserve a big round of applause for their generosity of time, money and spirit. l must say I was surprised and amazed (maybe because of bad press about how opulent and self-centered this county is) at how much help there was for the SOS donations and delivery on Dec. 22. The organization by everyone concerned was outstanding. Everyone worked together with their hearts and bare hands. With dollies loaded and cars and trucks filled, people of all ages got those donations of food and gifts out to the schools. But the report recommends sweeping changes that, over a period of about five years, would boil down the county's current net- work of 16 water districts to five. One of the recommendations is to merge Mesa with the Irvine Ranch Water District and six other smaller water providers into what would be the largest distnct in Orange County, serving 450,000 customers. But Bockmiller, who pored over the report in detail where it addresses Mesa and pre- pared a rebuttal r-eport he recently presented to the Mesa board for .review, srud he wasn't happy with what he found. Here's how they got there. hen Russ Davis, the coach of Southern California College's women's basketball team, walks out to the court for practice, he often hears that sound before he gets to the wood. That sound, the one that is only made when the crisp leather of a basketball whips the nylon of the hoop as it slices through the net It really is sort of like a swish, but •swish" sounds too delicate. But that sound is more of a •crack" as it resonates like a whip off the walls of the Pit. That's not delicate. A crack has a menacing sound. It is a sound that Davis had to work to get, one that is currently lacing his dreams and one that is sneaking into the nightmares of Golden State Athletic Conference rivals. The Vanguards wrapped up their preseason with a 13-4 , mark, a winning record that was partly due to the ferocious outside shooting of the blue and gold. sec has the highest team three-point field goal perc~ntage in the NAIA at 41.1 % while connecting on 92 of 222 attempts -the second-highest number of attempts among the seven conference squads. The only person. that may argue the notion that the Vanguards became a long-range threat overnight would be Davis, who spent the offseason recruiting and signing bombers. •t.ast year, (our opponents) sagged in on us to take Elaine (Whittemore), so we went out and got some shooters," Davis said after his squad's 95-31 creaming of Dominican when the Vanguards nailed 10 of 18 three-point attempts. •First we tried to find the best people available. Because this is a Christian college and our team is a family-type situation, when we found them, I went to see what kind of people they were," Davis said. Whittemore, a 6-foot senior who made the All-GSAC Team last season, gave opponents fits last year as she averaged nearly JS points and 10 rebounds a game. Her inside game, coupled with that of fellow senior and six-footer Gina Jojola, forced SCC's counterparts to jam the middle and run box-and-one defenses. Davis' strategy was to get shooters so the defense would be forced to step out on them. With defenders concentrating on the pe~eter game, Whittemore and Jojola would be open underneath the basket. 11 the defense chose to center in on the play in the paint, the shooters would be left open to convert buckets. Azusa Pacific, who 1s marked u the Vanguards' first GSAC challenge Tuesday at sec. is one team that 1s in the process of analyzing the potent two-pronged attack. •To tell you the truth, we're still trying to figwe that out,• Azusa'• Coach Danielle Jorg8DllOl1 Mid of bow ber t..m Will defend the Vanguard.I. Costa Mesa, which cut a 17- point second-half defiat to only nine points, came up short in its inaugural PCL upset quest of 1998, as visiting Aliso Niguel won, 67-54. The Mustangs (3-11 overall) pushed the Wolverines (9-8) with three-pointers, including five by 6-foot sophomore Ryan Naff, who came off the Mesa bench to pour in a sea- son-high 17 points. tributing nine rebounds, two assists and one block. . •we put our shooting team on the floor late in the g~e." said Allen, referring to Natt, senior navis Rice and senior Ryan Naff Drew Parkin, a 6-2 senior guard, had 14 points for Aliso, while Hair, among the most talented guai:ds in Orange County, scored nine points after missing the Wolverines' last sev- en games with an ankle injury. Hair was only 3 of Jon Payne, who helped the Mustangs make it a heart- throbber, pulling to within 63-54 with t:wo minutes left in the game. Naff, who drained 3 of 5 three- point attempts in the fow1h quar- ter, finishing the game 5 of 9 from the extra-point curvature, sent home his final triple with 2:29 remaining. It cut the Wolverines' lead to 10. "That was (Naffs) best night," said Allen, whose team tied a sea- son-high with eight three-point- ers. Aliso Niguel, however, had too height for the Mustangs. Sola scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the first half, while con- 11 from the floor, but all three were replay-worthy shots. Payne ( 11 points) and starting center Todd Hylton (10) also scored in doubJe figures for C~ta Mesa, while 6-foot junior James Bryarit came off the bench to add nine points. "If we play like this every night," Allen said, "we're going to get some wins." Mesa's big start produced leads of 10-6 and 13-11 , with Naff and Payne nailing threes. Aliso Niguel climbed back on top before th~ first quarter's buzzer, then manufactured a 26-17 lead in the second. • Rice's trifecta with .C:08 show- ing on the second-period clock was followed up by Bryant's right- handed hook shot with 3:32 left, bringing the hosts to.within 26-22. Aliso Niguel led at halftime, 29- 24, but it probably would've been larger had it not been for Payne's heads-up play on defense. With the Wolverines running down the clock for a last shot of the first half; Payne stripped the, ball loose from Hair, who was standing nonchalantly with the ball tucked under his arm near the half-court line. Payne missed his subsequent three-point attempt with O:Pl left, but his steal thwarted Aliso Niguel's futal opportunity, proof of Costa Mesa's play-hard mentality. But with Mesa's Nathan Jones in third-quarter foul trouble, the Mustangs struggled to keep up with the Wolverines early in the third quarter, a period when Aliso outscored the hosts, 22-15. "I was happy with our defensive intensity for the last 16 minutes, but l wasn't very pJeased to have given up 38 points the first half," Hirst said. Junior guard Matt Jame- son paced Harbor with 18 points, 13 of which came in the second half, but no other Sailor could crack double 1 figures. Gary Robinson led Harbor rebounds with six, while Dustin Illingworth (nine points) and Alan Limon (sev- en) and Nicasio (five) con- tributed in the scoring department. Senior Justin Butler canned six of bis first seven field-goal attempts en route to 14 points for the Chargers, who finished at 51 % from the field (23 of 45). The answer is really very s~mple. At Fletcher Jones Motorcars, we service more Mer- cedes than any other dealership in the nation--by a long shot. In fact, over the last six years, we have had more than 278,000 service appointments. That service vol- ume covers a lot of overhead. So when you come in to negotiate a purchase or lease agreement, we can be very accommodating--and quite frankly, very flexible. We sold 293 Mercedes m Decemtier -IDQre than anv other dealership ID the country. 714 718-3000 • 3300 )AMBOREE RoAo ..
