As you may recall, school

August, a vacancy opened. And
Carlson and the union represen-

picked Henderson as a replace-

Smith's note which I sa.ved

One thing's for certain. I was
forever more a Jack Smith

much of a civic fixture for me
as the golden Angel Maroni

Temple on Santa Monica
Boulevard. As long as I could

roots in Orange County with
my husband, Jim. Since then,
Bullocks Wilshire bas forever
closed its art deco doors on

have moved south to Murrieta.
And Jack Smith has written his

Jerry and Frasier -A star is born
• EDITOR'S NOT'E: Many people calling to share their
memories of Jerry Kobrin have mentioned one of Jer-
ry's most delightful Inventions -Frasier. the Sensuous
Lion. Here is a brief history.
Y ou've seen the movie -shy young
man chosen by a Hollywood press
agent to become a star, changes his
aame, lets the studio manufacture a biogra-
phy for him and becomes a dashing lover
admired by millions.
Well, that's the script Jerry Kobrin wrote for
a sauffy lion with arthritis and a desire for
romance. He named him Frasier, the Sensu-
ous Lion, gave him a Mexican circus back-
ground, introduced him to seven lionesses and
made the world love a lover.
Lion Country Safari African Wildlife Pre-
serve and Theme Amusement Park opened in
June .1970 in the hills of Irvine. Guests drove
through the wild animal preserve and saw
giraffes, antelopes, elephants, grizzlies, mon-
keys, a gaggle of other wild animals, and lions
-unhappy female lions and a few nerd-like·
males who were ignored by the females.
Enter Jerry Kobrin, vice president in charge
of promotion with a toothless, mangy and
arthritic old cat, and the legend of Frasier, the
Sensuous Lion was born. Frasier was the
human age equivalent of an octogenarian and
had spent his life in a cage. He responded to
the good food, expert medical treatment and

freedom, and discovered sex and the seven
lionesses. And they adored him.
In 16 short months, Frasier bad sired 33
cubs. He was a very satisfied lion.
Jerry Kobrin spread the word about Frasier
across the nation. Frasier received mail from
all over the world, clamoring for a lock of bis
mane or a T-shirt with his photograph -
tongue lolling, eyes glazed. He was the stuff of
international legend. His pictw'e appeared in
newspapers an<.l magazines daily.
In 1972, he was nominated to the Father's
Day Council in New York for consideration as
Father of the Year. •Frasier for President•
bumper stickers blossomed all over Southern
California and Frasier Fan Clubs sprang up all
over the nation. United Press International
publicized bis diet in detail -listing all.the vit-
amins and minerals in bis daily injections, due
to many requests, mostly by older men.
And the cash registers at Lion Country
played a merry tune as people lined up to
see Frasier in person. What they saw was an
old wreck of a lion surrounded by ad oring
young lionesses and their cubs. They were
his pride and they brought him food and
groomed him and protected him with a pas-
sion unseen before by the park's veteran
gamekeepers.
Frasier died July 13, 1972, !Uld was burled
on a hillside overlooking the preserve where
bis pride lived. A team of 15 medical special-
ists were given permission to examine Frasi-
er's body to determine if there was a reason
for bis remarkable virility. There didn't seem
to be.
A wake was held in bis honor on the fifth
anniversary of bis death at Lion Counby
Safari. All recalled the glorious days when
Frasier was proclaimed the Casanova of Cat-
dom and Jeny Kobrln's legend was told in
every comer of the world. We loved them
both.

To aid theif quest, Agee told the

Wlth a 30-niinute depdline, the
kids scrambled to·· find the
answer. They huddled in their
groups several choosing to draw individ~ Jersey cows and chicle·

(Most second graders haven't dis-
covered multiplication yet.)
Others fiddled with the calcu-

about the final 21 minutes.
For after rallying to shave a 20-
8 deficit to 20-15 with 5:15 left in
the first half, the Sailors spent the
rest of the night in out-take mode.
The Tars, in fact, went just
more than 13 minutes without a
field goal. until Colleen Eadie
spun free in the lane for a layup
with 1:22 left in the third quarter.
They then slumbered through
another 5:16, before Gina Italiano
next disturbed the net midway
through the final period.
