IRVINE -The fate of Newport
Beach's takeover of Bonita Canyon
remains up· in the air after the city
decided to hold out hope of patch-
ing Utings up with Newport offi-
cials -but that won't be easy.
What it will take: Newport
Beach must prorruse not to inter-
fere in Irvine's bid to annex the El
Toro Marine base, the site of a pro-
posed county airport.
The Irvine City Council on
Tuesday delayed acting on Mayor
Christina Shea's proposal to renege
on a deal to hand Newport Beach
the land at MacArthur Boulevard
and Ford Road -and the 22 acres
of eitra parklond and $7.2 million
of school funding that would go
along with it.
Irvine counal members said a
letter they got from Newport Beach
on Tuesday night left too many
unanswered questions. .
"I think Newport Beach has
done something stupider than nor-
mal," Counalman Michael Ward
said. "I'd like to see if I can bring

The reason behind Shea's pro-
posal: She thinks Newport Beach is
meddling too much in Irvine's bid
to annex the closing El Toro
Marine base, where Newport
Beach wants an auport and Irvine
opposes one. Shea started talking
about pulling her support for Boni-
ta Canyon after Newport hired for-
mer county Supervisor Don
Saltarelli to advise the city on
Irvine's efforts to gain control of the
base.
"When I make a deal with any-

nme to tone dOwn a testy-:sounding title
I 'm not comfortable with the
tiµe of this column. Never have
been, really. "Listen Up" was
chosen in a last-minute crunch
from a long list of possibilities,
and once it appeared in print was
sort of cast in stone.
But it's pejorative and arro-
gant -like a few drill sergeants
I can remember -and is too
easy a target for those shallow
thinkers who suspect I'm that
way, too. So the beginning of a
new year seems to be a good
time to ~ about changing. it.
All this has come to mind
because in grubbing through one
of my files last week, I found the
original list of name possibilities.
U I believed in such matters -
and I do, I do -I would say that
Pate or whatever you want to call
1t was speaking to me. Get rid of
that drag of a title, I am being
told, and come up with one that
better reflects what you think
you are about here.
Now it might be better to
reflect what you think I'm about,
so If I was a real gambler, I'd
suggest to the readers of this col-
joseph n.
beJI
umn -both of them -that they
offer up suggestions for a new
title. But since a bleak silence in
the aftermath of such a request
would be deeply depressing, I
won't do that. Instead, I'll run
through the list of titles that were
originally corisidered and add a
few more with the assurance that
any help you might want to offer
will be gratefully received.
The list I have in front of me
was transcibed by my wife from ·
a passel of scribbled notes accu-
mulated over-several weeks. In
the process of pulling them
together, she added some ideas
of her own, most of which are not
appropriate for a family newspa-
per and show an alarming disre-
spect for both domestic tranquil-
lity and the task at hand.
The title I favored -and
probably still do -is "Bell on
Wry." My wife didn't like it for
indeterminate reasons and made
this clear by repeated insolent
plays on it (9ucb as "Ham on
Wryn) in her list. I allowed this to
jnfluence me more than I should,
a weakness of character I have
since managed to correct. So
"Bell on Wryn is at the top of my
list.
But let's push on to some other
possibilities.
A number of generic titles
were on the list. "Bell's Note-
book," for example. Or "Mulling
Things Over," and •Chewing the
Fat.• All of these were too bland
for me and could have headed a
column for virtually anything
from health hints to society notes.
briefly in the news
Three top cops
get promoted
Three · policemen officially
clunbed the ranks this week at
the Newport Beach Police
Department as Chief Bob
McDonell filled vacant posts on
the conunand staff.
Tim Riley, 43, who began as a
police cadet in 1973, will assume
the rank of captain and will head
the department's support services
division. Riley . has worked as
accident investigator and bur-
glary detective, and has recently
served as support services lieu-
tenant.
Richard Long, 43, was promot-
ed from sergeant to lieutenant
and will work in the patrol divi~
s1on as a watch commander.
Long, who began his career at the
department 10 1976, was awarded
the Medal of Valor for helping to
evacuate patients from a fire at
Hoag Hospital.
Michael Hyams, 42, who was
also promoted from sergeant to
Jieutenant, will continue his cur-
rent assignment in the chief's
office. Hyams began as a cadet at
the department in 1975.
Allebom named
head of college board
Newport Beach resident
Robert Allebom was elected
Tuesday to head the California
Community College Board of
Governors.
Allebom was appointed to a
six-year term on the 16-member
board in 1993 by Gov. Pete Wil-
son. The owner of an Irvine real
estate company, Allebom said the
focus of his one-year term as pres-
ident will be to keep community
colleges in step with changing
business and social climates in
Califoritia.
"With a unified board and a
dynamic chancellor in place, it is
incumbent upon us to continue
anticipating and adapting to the
shifting social and economic envi-
ronment of California to meet the
rapidly increasing demand for
access to post secondary educa-
tion," Allebom said in a prepared
statement.
Allebom also said he will
attempt to forge business-educa-
llon partnerships to get more
money for the state's community
colleges. He also believes com-
'munity colleges must be at the
forefront of work-force training
with a special emphasis on high-
tech training.
The board of governors over-
sees California's 106 community
colleges, which is the largest
higher education system in the
world.

Similarly, "I Heard It Through
the Grapevine" and "You Read It

columns.
More to my taste were "Mus-
ings,• "Random Thoughts" and
"As I Was Saying ... • These-
especially the first two -have
the virtue of suggesting a simple
interchange of thought in a mode
of bemusement with the human
condition without judging or
evangelizing.
1 suppose the recognition that
I sometimes do judge and per-
haps even occasionally -but not
intentionally -evangelize made
them seem mildly hypocritical.
Still, these titles might be a con-
stant reminder to me to get the
shrill out of my voice.
"Let's Rap", •Gather 'Round"
and "What's Up" had a hip con-
notation to them that didn't fit
either my age or station in life. I
neither talk the talk nor walk the
walk. "Shooting the Breeze"
comes closer to my patois but
sounded flip to me. "Have You
Heard the One About?" and
"Have Words, Will 'lfavel" were
too precocious, and "Mental .
Meanderings• was too accurate
Since I am regularly accused
6f being liberal -which trans-
lates loosely40 sedition in
Orange County -I tried to come
up with a title to reflect that
heresy. But the only thing 1 could
think of was "Left Out,• and it
somehow didn't have the proper
ring to it.
I liked "Mountains and Mole-
hills" and still do, but I'm not
sure if it will mean anything to
younger generations who have
probably never used such terµu-
nology. That one, however, is a
serious entry, as is "Between the
Lines,• which catches my intent
if not my point-of-view The oth-
er suggestions are either too far
out, too irreverent, or too raunchy
to consider fwtber.
Then, of course, there is the
possibility of just putting my
name at the top of the column the
way such heavyweights as
William Buckley and OaVld
Broeder and William Sa.fire do,
but I'm not sure I'm ready for that
yet. Maybe by the time I'm 80.
I suppose I could try various
titles on for size and see which
one feels the most comfortable.
But that sounds exhausting and a
little pretenbous, Wee gilding a
JOwnalistic lily. Besides, I'm not
sure the people who make-up
the paper would approve of that.
So if you feel of a mind to
help, phone in your suggestions.
Our operators will be alert for
your calls. And, believe me, if no
one calls, you're not going to
hear-about it. Neither will the
editors.

FROST

A large antique trunk vanished
from the apartment on the night
King vct.rushed, Lloyd said.
Blood drops found on King's
sheets are consl5lent with a first
relat.Jve of the 23-year-old defen-
dant, though the fact that King's
tiody has never materialized
makes 1t impossible to test. her
blood, Lloyd said
Lloyd also argued Frost had a
hlstory of violence against his
mother.
Under questioning from the
prosecutor, Phyllis Magee, a friend
of King, said she witnessed Frost
assault his mother during an argu-
ment over him coming home late
one night in 1991.
•it just got really out of control,"
Magee said. "He-blew up."
Magee said Prost shoved his
mother, pinned her to the ground,
and beat her with his fists, giving
her a swollen face and a cut lip.
Another prosecution witness,
Lori Loustaunau, who worked as
King's supervisor at Girls Inc.,
desalbed the missing woman ~

King was never 15 minutes late
without calling.
The defendant. who wore a
shaved head and a strikingly long,
pointed goatee, took notes
throughout the court session and
watched attentively. His lawyer,
Deputy Public Def endeJ Jim
Appel. reserved his opening state-
ment and declined to discuss the
case with the Daily Pilot.
Members of King's family
watched the p.roceedi.ogs from the
rear of the sparsely populated
courtroom.
•The family ls happy to have
the trial get started,• said Gregory
King, the missing woman's brother.
"lt's been quite a long time.•
Police filed a murder complaint
against Frost in November 1995. In
January 1996 Los Angeles poJice
arrested' him for allegedly stealing
a car. ·They notified the Costa Mesa
police when a computer search
revealed the outstanding warrant.
Testimony is expected to contin-

change the boundaries without city support.
"If this change in boundary is the right thing to

said. "Don't confuse it."

MESA BELTS EAGLES, 47·-28
Lopsided win over
cross-town rival ends
six-game losing streak
and vaults Mustangs
back into the PCL race.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pi/or
COSTA MESA -Never mind
the perpetual Lady Bell Trophy
that goes to the series winner, or
the cross-town bragging rights
one team annually seizes when
Costa Mesa and Estancia battle
in high school girls basketball.
According to Mesa Coach
Shontel Sherwood, the Mus-
tangs' entire season was at stake
Tuesday at Estancia. where
Mesa came up with a 47-28 tri-
umph. The verdict was the most
lopsided victory over the Eagles
in Pacific Coast League play,
since the two teams began com-
peting for the Lady Bell Trophy
five seasons ago.
•This was a major turning
point for us,• said Sherwood,
who saw her team put together
three 8-9 runs to forge a 36-22
lead early in the fourth quarter .
The visitors (5·12, 1-1 in league
and ranked No. 2 in CIF South-
ern Section Division ID-A) then
posted 11 unanswered points ln
a near-four minute span in the
fourth to push the lead to 4 7-24
and end a six-game losing streak. .~
•As far as I was concerned,
this was a must win if we were
going to maintain the momen-
tum and the attitude necessary
to go on,~ Sherwood said.
Sherwood termed the tri-
umph the Mustangs' most com·
plete game of the season.
•we had one little four-
minute lapse in the third quarter
(in which the Eagles put togeth-
er an 8-0 run of their own to
close to within 28-22), but for the
most pa.rt, we played two halves.
It was a total team effort.•
A large share of that effort
came on defense for Mesa,
which helped the Eagles match
their point total with 28
turnovers.
•Kelly· Chapin and Kim
Nguyen really sparked us
defensively," Sherwood
explained.
Chapin, a standout senior
ma.king her first start in -weeks
due to illness, was also an off en-
sive catalyst, compiling a game-
high 12 points.
Senior Julie Collett added 10
poin~ and nine rebounds for the
winners, while Evelyn Powers
chipped in with seven points
and six boards.
Junior Francia Diaz paced
Estancia (4-13, 0-2 and ranked
No. 8 in Division W-A) with 11
points and seven rebounds,
while senior Amy Deming bad
seven points and five boards.
Lisa Steinfeld, the Eagles'
leading scorer (averaging 11 8
per game coming in), was ham-
pered by foul trouble. She fin-
ished with six points and fouled
out with 3:23 left.
The Mustangs, shooting
around 25 % from the field all
season, drilled 18 of 47 (38.3%)
against the Eagles, including
Kristin Chisholm's 27-foot three-
pointer at the halftime buzzer to
give them a 26-14 edge at the
break. Mesa hit 9 of 17 (53%)

CORONA DEL MAR -Only
one thing could be worse than a
terrible shooting night for a bas-
ketball team that relies upon its
long-range shots. That thing is an
ineffective defense coupled with
a spell of bad luck that has the ·
ball skipping m an out of the
h.oop
Both spells were cast upon
Corona del Mar High's girls bas-
ketball team Tuesday rught as
Sea View League foe Irvine (10-5,
2-0) VJSited and left with a 44-26
win
•our problem 15 defirutely the
offense," Sea Kings Coach Elbert
Davis said. "We don't have too
many scorers so if we give up
more than 40 points, we're done.
We rely on that defense and
unfortunately we didn't do our
job tonight."
Davis' Sea Kings (4-11, 0-2),
usually sparked by the tb.ree-
point shooting of senior guard
Sarah Dunlap, were hounded
early by a tenaoous Irvine trap
that seemed to rattle the front-
court
With less than four minutes
ticked off the clock, the hosts had
already turned the ball over five
tunes. but suffered 1ust a 6-3
dehat as the Vaqueros had a
hard tune finding the center of
the hoop. as well
But Dunlap never got hot. and
no matter which four playen
were on the court around her, no
one else filled the gaps
Four d.ifferent tunes m the sec-
ond half, the Vaqueros gathered
four of their own offensive
rebounds before either sinking
the shot or drawing the foul.
Dunlap still managed to lead
the team with 12 points and was
a standout defensively With nine
steals.
The Sea Kings return to Sea
View League acbon Thursday
night when they travei to Back
Bay rival Newport Harbor foe a
7 :30 tipoff.

fell to 0-2 m league. including a
hard-fought 1-0 loss to El Toro Thurs·

Among those more than holding
their own Tuesday were junior goal·
keeper Jordan Fred.rii.sen (10 saves
and several other key plays), junior
sweeper Brooke Plamson, junior
striker JaneUe Doyle, junior mid-
fielder Devon Burlingham and
sophomore striker Jenni On.
Burlingham and Orr combined for
the Tars' lone goal, an Orr header

Despite cries of offsides by Estancia
players, the referees allowed the goal.
Estancia ha d an immediate cha.nee
to put itsell back into the game with
two comer kicks but failed to convert.
Tavares offered that her offense
was troubled Tuesday,·in part because
of the absence of some key players to
injury, like forward Becca Silva.
But she also said her defense was
off.
»We're having a hdfd time setting
up the defense. We have to get a set
group back there," she said. "But you
have to give credit to Mesa today.
They just outhusUed us."
On one instance the Mustangs
showed that scrappiness, the Eagles
wasted their best opportunity to get on
the board as Mesa's keeper, Margaret
Landeros shined.
Porter put some moves on two
defenders to get open and then made
an accurate pass to Maureen Ayrur.
Flynn's boot was rejected by Lan-
deros, but Roth drilled a shot off the
rebound. Agam, though, Landeros
was there. The play wasn't finished as
one more Eagle got a fool on the ball
ma.crowd of players before Landeros
smothered the ball between the mud
and her body
son opened the scoring on a left-foot·
ed boot she tucked into the opposite
upper com.er.
•Tbat (game--tying goal) showed

who watched the Eagles (6-4-2T 2-0)

minute, when Sara Henderson col-

from a Newport defender about 20

ball onto her right foot and drilled a
