According to the law, it is illegal to smoke inside any bar or tavern with only a few exceptions -most notably for owner-operated bars with less than five employees. · The law allows customers to puff away on an outside patib area, but that's an expensive proposition, even for bar owners who have the adjacent land to build on to thetr bars. SHAPING UP IN THE NEW YEAR From spinning to boxing, personal trainer reveals the newest alternatives to gym wQrkouts By Leslie Simmons, Daily Pilot F or many, the season of giv- ing and overindulgence not only included accwnu- lating unwanted gifts, like toe- nail clippers or Aunt Mary's bard-as-a·rock fruit cake, but also fat. · To help ease the trauma of losing pounds and getting back into shape, certified personal trainer Cindie DeMello of Posi- tive ·Results, a personal training facility in Newport Beach, lent her expertise for this guide to some new ways of working out. SPINNING The rage, according to DeMello, is spinniI\g classes, which consist of a stationary bike operating at & fixed rate and a weighted fly wheel rang- ing from 35 to 45 pounds. But DeMello warns that peo-_ ple should be careful choosing a spinning class and may want to consider these factors when looking for a good class to join: •Is the instructor certified in ' aerobic training or do they have a spinning certificate? "Many classes are led by professional cyclists," she said. "They may be able to give tip:; but they don't necessarily know how to check the heart rate or know which muscles to work. •Of course the best of both worlds would be to have an instructor who is both a cyclist and aerobic trainer." • U the class is mixed, does the instructor demonstrate the exercises for both the beginner and advanced participants? • Does the instructor get off their bike, walk around the class and make sure each per- son is exercising and getting the most out of their workout? DeMello said Shape Up Newport has the best spinning classes in the area with trained professionals teaching each class. BOXJNGJKICKBOXING Another rising trend in car- dio workouts l.s boxing or kick- bo:xing and DeMello said their popularity is on the rise. KIM HAGGERTY I DAILY PllOT Irvine resident Lisa Hudson hits the bag during a boxing class recently at LA. Boxing tn Costa Mesa. Boxing is one of the new ways people are getting ln shape after the holidays. Although many gyms offer cardio boxing classes, in order to learn proper form, DeMello suggests looking into facilities like L.A. Boxing in Costa Mesa. L.A. Boxing assistant manag- er Ben Fapso said at least 65% of their clientele are women and they offer classes ranging from beginning to advanced. HWe specialize in boxing,· Fapso said. "U you needed brain surgery you'd go to a neurosurgeon not a pediatrician right? Well, boxing is the same way." "The p,eople who come here are looking for something that's exciting. fast-paced and will give them results,• added man- ager Daryle Wa:re. CLIMBING · Another off-beat way to work muscles is climbing -not on machines but on actual walls fonned to look like moun- tainsides. Rockreation Sport Club Cen- ter in Costa Mesa is the only club in the area that offers this unique workout. With 10,000-square-feet of climbing wall, the club also fea- tures a weight room, stretch room, yoga and stretch clinics. Introductory classes are $37 and, according to instructor Jase Gilbert, they are the best way to learn about climbing. "It's pretty addicting,• Gilbert said. "Most people try it and it's either definitely for them or (not}.• Aside from being something fun and different, DeMello said the fervent workout helps build strength and endurance. HOME WOJlKOUI'S For many people, working out at home is more comfort· able and easier than going to a gym -but it can be a heavy investment. "Buying a universal gym can be costly," she said. "You can get a bench and free weights for less and get the same results." She suggests home gym users consult a personal trainer and invest in at least one start- up session before using the equipment. Besides DeMello's business, Positive Results, which otters one-on-one personal training for men and women at the Newport Beach studio or in- home. she also recommends Body Design -The Women's Athletic Center. "Body Design is the only other personal training facility I'd recommend," sbe said. "The trainers are well-educat- ed and they have good equip- ment." - 8EAD£85 HOnJNf Mell, CA 92626. Doctors' offices, labs and hos- pitals are bursting at the seams with flu patients and the tales of those who have been there and back would make for a pretty thick Stephen King anthology. The woman beside him progresses from an occasional furtive glance to a full-on stare. A deeply worried stare. Worried but not alarmed, Paul assumes he's just a little pale and dry- mouthed. He holds on to that assumption until the flight atten- dant shows up. The flight attendants retire to the gal- ley in lockstep and continue their deliberations. At this point, Paul is slipping out of both his seat and\reality. The aisle seems a quarter mile long. JANUARY 16, 1998 MARC ~I OAl.Y "'-OT Newport Beach ftre cDd ~ pull a woman from ber Cad11111e after a two-car Injury acddent 1bunday at Blaon Avenue and .Jamboree Road. Troubled intersection site .of tWo-car collision EASTBLUFF -The inter- section of Jamboree Road and Bison Avenue on Thursday afternoon logged it.s first acci- dent under new measures meant to reduce traffic now through nearby neighborhood streets. An 0..-year-old Irvine woman was turning left from northbound Jamboree onto Bison -a maneuver prohibit- ed by the new traffic measW"eS. Crews had already blocked the left-tum lane, but the driver, Marguerite Knox. used the next lane, police Sgt. John Desmond said. Her 1991 Cadillac collided with a 1998 Mercedes-Benz, which Dorothy Jean Moore of Chino Hills was driving south on Jamboree. Paramedics took both dri- vers to Hoag Hospital with cuts and minor injuries, po.lice said. Police are still investigating the accident, but they know the impact was enough to set off both ca.rs' air bags. Thursday marked the first day of a six-month trial pedoo during which traffic will no longer be able to cross Jam- . boree Road on Bison Avenue or tum left from Jamboree to Bison. The plan came after yea.rs of debate over how to stop increasing traffic flowing through Eastbluff -debate that intensified after neighbor- hood resident ll'acy Wofonsky was killed at the intersection. Oty offida1s in December approved the trial plan after meeting with Eastbluff resi- dents. •we're off to a rocky start.• said Michael Bigi. an Eastblu.ff 'n'a.ffic Committee member. ·we might ask tor some police support out here the next few days.• . Desmond said officers couldn't do mu'ch besides enforce the measures now in place. •nie signage is out there, the barricades were up," Desmond said. •tt•s one of those things people are going to have to get used to." City offid.als, though they didn't have exact statistics, said the much-scrutinized intersection doesn't necessarily have more than its share of accidents -crashes there are simply highlighted because of the site's history. "Every time there's one there, it just gets a lot of media attention," Desmond said. -Jennifer Armstrong :~---~~ Mattress Outlet Stor , . , ~ BRAND NEW· COSMETICALLY IMPERFECT I ~ : • Get the Best for Less! With the Jlelp of MediaOne cable company, the Newport- Mesa school district started cablecasting school board meet- ings live on Channel 67 this week. The cablecasts are Jilnited to Costa Mesa tor now, but MediaOne officials are talking to Newport Beach cable compa· nies, Cox Communications and Comcast Cablevision, about cabling the live meetings mto Newport Beach homes as well •1t•s really tunny,• said board member Serene Stokes. •vou uted to have to worry about what you say'. Now you also have to worry about your hair and your makeup, and you have to make sure you're smiling." Stokes, whose son-in-law is an actor, said he gave her some valu- able on-screen makeup tips. "The most important thing is to powder your face because your tace shines tremendously," she said. • Prerecorded board meetings used to be cablecast on Channel 67 in Costa Mesa one to two days after the meetings. But MediaOne invested about $12,000 in the boardroom to be able to provide the live cable- casts. Board member Judy Franco said the live cablecasts will enable district constituents to view the mee1ings at home, and if they see an issue they want to comment on, they can drive over to the education, center before the meeting is over. •That's the main advantage I can see,• she said. The board allows for commuru- ty input at the beginning and end of all meetings. . Board member Wendy Leece said she hopes the live cablecasts will increase CQmmunity partia- pation in the meetings. •Even though it is intimidating .to be on live TV, I hope it wW attract people to get more involved in public schools to make them better,• she said. Board member Martha Fluor said she hopes Newport Beach cable companies will follow MediaOne's lead. •(MediaOne General Manag- er) Del Heintz has stepped up to the plate,• she said.
