A good judge of salad?
L ast week a Daily Pilot reporter had
lunch with Harbor Municipal Court
Judge Margaret Anderson. These are
among the notes the reporter scribbled on
his pad: She drives a big white Lincoln with
a license plate that reads IBO JUDG. She
does not like to wear her seat belt. She did
not mention she was a judge to cut short the
wait at the restaurant.
She rattled off anecdotes cheerfully and
ate Cobb salad. After an hour the reporter
pointed out that people would be expecting
her back in court a bout now. She took
INSIDE

another bite of salad. "The
good thing about being a
judge,• she joked, "is they
can't start until you get
there.•

School board member Judy Franco is
confident that her two cats would give the
rats at Corona del Mar High School a run
for their money. She said they have been
emboldened by thelf repeated encounters
with vanous-s1zed birds and critters m their
back yard.
But Newport-Mesa Federation of Teach-
ers President Linda Mook, who was a
teacher at Corona del Mar has seen the rats.
"We're not taUong about mice here," she
said. "I don't know if any cat would want to
tango with those rats."
Running away with his life
Newport Beach City Councilman Tom
Thomson apparently felt that staying home
and reading city staff reports wasn't doing
his health much good. So on Sunday, he
tackled the San Diego Marathon, a 26.3-
mile trek that began at 5:30 a.m.
"It's my first marathon -and my last,"
said Thomson, a real estate broker. "I may
be CQming home in several pieces."
The one-year councilman spent 27 weeks
training for the run after he lost a bet with
his attorney -and he says he doesn't even
remember what the bet was about. He prac-
ticed by running 21 miles in about six hours
from his Jasmine Creek home to the penin-·
sula to Balboa Island to Ford Road and back
home.
"It's really a mid-We crisis thing," he said.
No more Mac attacks, please
Read enough about ex-school chief Mac
Bernd and his flight to Texa~. where he has
assumed the role of school superintendent in
the bustling Dallas suburb of Arlington?
Well, guess what? He has, too
After reading -on the Daily Pilot's web
page, perhaps -the letter from one reader
complaining about the non-ending Mac cov-
erage, Bernd allowed that he too is a bit
wearing of reading about himself:
"I am a subscriber to the Daily Pilot who
no longer lives in Costa Mesa but who loves
variety in the news. 1 must say that I sin-
cerely agree with W.
M. Lawson, association president of the
Mesa Verde Readers Right to News Variety,
and would welcome coverage of subjects
other than Mac Bernd {maybe you can do
an article on my wife, Shelley)."

Seniors support Glenn's choice to ride shuttle
• Local residents at Oasis Senior Center back 76-year-old sena-
tor's decision to be oldest man in space.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
John Glenn, the astronaut-tumed-
senator about to tum astronaut again
at 76, has local seniors thinking he's
courageous, if a little crazy, with his
Friday announcement that in October,
he'll become the oldest man in space.
"I think he's pretty brave," said
Newport Beach resident Lucy Thomas
as she played bridge at the Oasis
Senior Center Sunday. "I also thmk
he's too old.· ,
She and others at the Corona del
Mar senior center bad mixed feelings
on Glenp's planned historic ride in the
space shuttl,e Discovery.
Let him go if he wants to, they said
-but why on Earth would he want to?
Well, maybe Glenn isn't satisfied
with making history only once, as he
did in 1962 with America's first space
fbght. Maybe be wants to show 60 is
too young for NASA to be senchng its
astronauts into retirement.
With his announcement, Glenn
dedicated his upcoming trek to older
Americans. He also said the flight
would allow for research on muscle
deterioration and sleep disorders in
senior citizens -and that part did
entice the Oasis crowd.
"Let him go, let him enjoy the ride,•
France Cottrell said. "We'll all want to
go once he comes back with all that
research and fmds out it'll help us •
Still, not everyone was completely
convinced
·Maybe they should let a younger
man get the expenence, • said Bob
Mindte, an 89-year-old Costa Mesa
resident. "But 1 guess we should be
supporting him, lf he's really gomg to
do this.·
Margaret Spengler felt a httle
stronger about it.
"We're going to back lum up," she
said. "Just look bow good we are -
we could go if we wanted to.•

Some car · owners may wrongly
conclude that. since a 50/50 mixture
of antifreeze and water works so well
in their cars· cooling systems, increas-
ing the anti~ze level will provide
more protection. Under nonnal cir-
cumstAnces, however, a 50/50 mix-
ture does the job intended by provid-
ing freezing protection down to
minus 34 degrees Fahrenheit and
boiling protection up to 275 degrees.
Following the ''more is better" dictum
by increasing the -percenuige of anti-
freeze may extend these limits a little,
but the extra cost is hardly worth the
very moderate increase Consider,
too, that pure antifreeze is not an opti-
mal heat conductor. Thus, if a coolant
is to be effective, it must incorporare
the heat conducting qualities that
water brings to the mix. In short,
water helps coolant to absorb and
release heat quickly.
HINT: Because antifreeze's
additives gradually lose their
protective qualities, a car's coolant
should be checked regularly.

Everyone's goal is the crown ...
league, CIF, State ... but Corona
del Mar HigP,'s girls tennis team
has attained the ·ultimate with
their conquest of the nation,
ala USA Today's mythical title.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
I f you think it's tough playing
football against Cathohc high
schools in Orange County, try
winning national titles in girls
tennis against the top academies
t from around the nation.
By capturing the first mythical
national championship, as voted by a
panel from the National Federation of
High SChool Tennis Coaches, maybe
that begets Corona del Mar High as a
quasi-academy in its own right.
For years, tiny CdM has competed in
CIF Southern Section Division I with the
larger schools. That's by choice. Other
county powers, such as Woodbridge in
1996 and Dana Hills in '97, have elected ,,
I' , • ..
...... ..
not to compete in
Division I, primarily
for the opportunity to
win a lower-division
title.
The Sea Kings,
under third-year coach
Tim Mang, a 27-year
higb school veteran
who has guided
CdM's boys for five
years, won the
Mang Division I
championship by
defeating Peninsula Nov. 24 at the
Claremont Club.
Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates had
won six consecutive Division I titles
under coach Tom Cox since Palos
Verdes, Rolling Hills and Miraleste
combine(i to form the school in 1991.
For CdM, also with a proud tradition,
: having won CIF titles in 1978, '79, '88
• 1 and '89, it was a long overdue honor.
• 1 •My girls said to me the other day,
I 'Now we know why we're in Division
: I
1 I,"' Mang said. •we never got the credit
: 1 before, with our little school (779
• 1 enrollment) playing Division I and all the
: I other schools getting titles in Division Il,
· I m and N . Guess what? U we were in • . I • t Division N (instead of playing up), we
1 never would've had a chance for a
national championship. But finally this is
justice, and it's finally paid off."
As reported in the USA 'Ibday Jan. 8,
the Sea Kings finished the season 22-1
and atop the national rankings.
The National Federation of High
School Tennis Coaches was formed last
year to promote tennis as a team sport.
More than 150 coaches are members of
it. Eight serve on the voting panel, with
each coach assigned a region for
collecting data on the championship
teams. Cox was one of the panel
members. .
•Even though it's mythical, there was
a lot of work done with (the voting),"
Mang said. •I'm sure Cox told (the
panel) about our tough schedule, and
how we have three nationally ranked
players."
CdM, which played (and defeated)
every team ranked in the county top-10
poll last season, was led by senior Nina
Vaughan and sophomores Caylan Leslie
and Nadia Vaughan.
l A 7hile the celebrated trto oombined V V to go 153-12 in Singles, an amazing
mark considering the Sea Kings'
opponents, there were others who
contrtbuted greatly, including Ruchika
Budhraja, whose ma.{athon victory
against Peninsula's Elizabeth Lee in the
first round of the C1F cbampiombip
match was not only momentous (it lasted
2:30), Lt gave the Sea Kings an upper
hand as they mapped the Panthers'
six-year reign on the banner.
Budhraja, a junior, won two of three
sets at No. 2 singles for CdM tn the title

Bryant, Joe Paterno and Pop
Warner as he is the sixth all-time
winningest coach in college
football, the Colonels posted an
8-3 record last fall with Garden
Grove-native Simon Fuentes
serving as the signal-caller.
Collins has a strong shot at
filling the starting quarterback
vacancy left by Fuentes'
graduation.
An All-Mission Central
perlormer for the Pirates last
season, Collins threw for 1,332
yards and nine touchdowns with
a 54 % completion mark. He also
threw eight inter<:eptions .
On a team that amassed just
two wins in his two seasons,
Collins leaves Coast as the
program's seventh-best QB with
a total of 2,502 yards, 15
touchdowns, 10 interceptions.
He was 209 for 380, good for 55
percent.
Collins showed that he had
some gnt, as well, as be spent a
large portion of the season
peeling himself off the grass
(and even the track at Mt. San
Antonio College), almost always
to return to the game.
When Collins announced his
decision to attend Ejilstern
Kentucky, two other '97 Pirates
made their commitments public,
as well.
Unebacker Dave Brown, who
could only continue playing
football at the NAIA or Division
II level because of bis age, opted
to attend Emporia State in
Kansa.s.

played baseball in 1991 at

SANS CHAPiN PROVES SANS VICTORY college basketball
•Late-game spurt can't
save Mustangs as Mesa
falls at Westminster, 46-38.
By Molly Vanity, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -With leading
scorer Kelly Chapin lying behind
the bench shaking in pain and
tedl'S, the Costa Mesa High girls
basketball team were one person
down against a scrappy Westmin-
ster team.
[t didn't take long for the Lions
to Jump out to a 14-point lead in
the second quarter, so Coach
Shontel Sherwood had just one
request of her squad: Put your-
selves in a position to make a
comeback.
The Mustangs lost the non-
leogue game, 46-38, but made an
.unpressive run Saturday night
that gives Sherwood a reason to
snule.
MThey did everything I asked
them to do," she said. M (That was
to) be aggressive. We were down
by 10 at halftime, and it was to
dup away at the lead and keep it
at that level."
After grai bing five rebounds
and canning a buc:k t tn th first
quarter, Chapin came out of the
game bec4use of a nagging bdck
injury. After stretching, she re·
entered but C411le bdclc to the
sideline on the verge of tears.
According to the team's trainer,
the injury was orlginally thought
to be a strained muscle. But as
CM.pin fell to the ground in sobs,
the trainer said she may be suffer-
ing from a pinched neive or a disc
problem as shots of pain and
num.bness are going down into
her leg.
ln the second and third quar-
ters, the visiting Lions continued
on their romp, forcing the Mus-
tangs (2-1 in the Pacific Coast
League, 7-12 overall) to commit
more turnover than points scored
-12 twnovers and seven points.
It was Westminster's tough
zone defense that was giving the
hosts problems.
"I'm happy with our defense,
but we have to get better on our
zone offense and on recognizing
it," Sherwood said. wThey were in
that zone and there was a big bole
in the middle and no one was

However, the onset o1 the final
period brought with lt a Mµstang
stampede.
Preshmnn guard Nancy Hat-
sushi made a steal and delivered
an assist to Evelyn Powers, who
dropped the ball in for a layup to
cut the Uons' lead to niJle.
Mesa began filling Sherwood's
prescription of chipping away at
that lead.
With 4:05 remaining, senior
Julie Collett drew the fifth foul on
Westminster's Janet Glasby (10
points) and sank two free throws
to move the score to 38-33.
Collett then made a steal on a
Llon inbound pass. The fast break
found Hatsushi with the ball
underneath the basket. Her
attempt hit the bottom of the-
backboard,, but Jenny Earnest
grabbed ~e rebound and forced
a foul. •
She bit one of her free throws
to put Mesa within four. ·
The Mustangs remained with-
in striking distance, partly fueled
by the strong inSide play of S·foot·
11 sophomore Autumn Smith.
•I don't know what happened
lo Autumn in there," Sherwood
said with a smile. ·she grabbed
three offensive rebounds and
came back up to make the sbotl •
Smith finished with five points
and six boards.
Westminster's guard Holly
Armstrong halted Mesa's run with
a pair of steals.
Collett and Powers each col-
lected 10 points to lead the Mus-
tangs, while Hatsu.shi also record-
ed three steals and four rebounds.
