COSTA MESA -In a sur-
prise move that both sides
claimed as a victory, memtlers of
the Piecemakers have pleaded
no contest to some of the ntisde-
meanor charges filed again~
them and agreed to pay the city
$2,000, serve two years proba-
tion and do three days of com-
munjty service.
Four Piecemakers -Marie
Kolasinski, Anne Sorensen, Steve
Brenner and Jim Merklinger -
had faced a total of 15 crirrunal
charges filed against them by the
city last year.
The members of the contro-
versial religious group, which
owns the Plecemakers Country
Store and holds strong anti-gov-
ernment beliefs, were charged
with holding three events in the
store parking lot last year with-
out permits and violating 11 city
building and fire codes at their
I Logan Avenue warehouse.
But m a settlement reached
1 Friday during a two-hour court
hearing, the Plecemakers agreed
to plead no contest to three of the
pemut violations.
A fourth charge of blocking a
pub!Jc sidewalk during an Octo-
ber Harvest Festival and the 1 1
code violations were dismissed.
By pleading no contest, the
four Plecemakers were ordered to
collectively serve two years pro-
bation, reimbl.U'Se the city $2,000

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Aeademia deserves same
~ttention~· funding as athletics . ,
I reed T.W. Staple's letter to the editor
with regard tD putting academia on the
samo par as athletes (Jan. 8), which
appeared in your papei the Nme week 'as
a story: on the school bOard'I plan to look
at where the district's money is being
.. spent (•Board members zero in on budget
.. problems,• Jan. 6). Perhaps the school
board can work to achteve equity
between its athletic and ac::ademic pro-
grams.
Por instance, ln ninth through 12th
grades, there a.re three sport seasons per
year, and each season has at least stx
sports between the boys and the girls.
Each sport usually has three teams: fresh-
man-sophomore, junJor varsity and varsi-
ty. Most teams, excludlng·football, have
about 12 players per team. I estimate that
there are about 200 high school teams in
the district, for which the district pays
each coach a stipend. In addition, the dis-
trict pays for equipment costs, entry fees.
refe rees and transportation. It is my guess
that the transportation budget for athletics
is the greatest expense as can be seen by
the daily lineup of afternoon buses.
In addition, there are about 56 sev-
e nth-and eighth-grade sports teftm.$
funded by the district. Each of the high
schools also has an athletic secretary to
keep all .of the records and travel plans
straight. Depending on the sport. some-
limes trainers are also on sta1f. This
money 1s well spent, and it keeps a lot of
kids busy learning skills and physically
fit.
The district schools also have academic
teams. At Costa Mesa High School, these
include seventh-and elghth-grade acade-
mic pentathlon, math. speech and mock
trial teams. The seventh-grade pentathlon
team, for'instance, will be coached in his-
tory, English/literature, math and science
tor an hour or more every day after
school. The speech team will write and
practice lts speeche9, then spend all day
Saturday competing against Qijl.er schools.

Gay Geiser-Sandoval says academics deserve u much attention as ~
The mock trial team puts in many'
hours of practice to leam how to put on a
court tnaJ, then compete against other
schools tn multiple rounds of competition
m their roles as lawyers, court personnel
and Wllnesses.
There is no money budgeted from the
district to pay these coaches. There is no
money for their equipment needs, and
there IS no money for trdDSportation. It is
my unde rstanding that there is oo money
tor any of the distnct's academic coach-
es, wtuch may explain why there are not
as many academic teams as there are
athletic teams. Other schools that com-
pensate their teacher coaches for these
acllVJlles have teams numbering in the
hundreds. Statistically, the student on the
academic team is more likely to raise ~
school's test scores after spending a few
hours each day on these activities, and
they are much more likely to pick their
colleges with these types of teams on
their resumes than those on the athletic
teams.
Ukewise, our district aays lt ts promot-
ing the performing arts. But at C<>5ta
Mesa High School, one teacher is in
charge of all five ot the choirs as well as
the production of the play and mUJ!cal.
He has almost 200 singers and bas to
schedule all perlonnances as well as both
junior high and high school competitions.
Our school has one teacher in charge of
all of the band programs for seventh
through 12th grades. This includes eight
bands, with a total of about 150 studel\ts,
for which to schedule performances and
competitions. .
If we are really serious about the arts
and want to put them on par with athlet-
ics, why doesn't the district provide-the
perfonning arts program with a secretmy
and Iree up some of the burden of record
keeping and paperwork off of these two
teachers?
I implore the school board members to
go back to ground zero and put the
spend.mg for academic and arts programs
on a level with athletics. I ask the Daily
Pilot to da the same and start covering the
academic events, which so far bave
received zero coverage. Every day, the
paper covers the sports teams, but thete
has not been one mention of any of the
district's academic teams and very little
coverage of band or choir programs or
competitions. Fair is fair.
It is time for our community to support
the efforts of the teachets an(j the stu-
dents who work on our academic teams.
P1ease join me in asking the school board
and the Daily Pilot to give them their time
in the sun.

THE MAILBAG
City has done a fine
job with information
I read the letters regarding
poor ccmmunk:ation between
the city and its residents
· ·with some amazement. They
obviously feel left out of the
loop and need a residents'
advocacy group.
I must disagree.
I was a director on the West
Newport Beach Association for
four years. This association
includes representatives from
seven homeowners associations
plus three or four from areas
without homeowners associa-
tions. It pursues issues primarily
affecting West Newport plus
many related to the city in gen-
eral. A speaker is invited to
each monthly meeting. These
speakers include the mayor,
most of the City Council mem-
bers, the city manager, his
assistant, and principals of·the
planning commission, public
works, building department,
police, fire and marine depart-
ments. I don't recall that we
were ever turned down by any
of these people. They each
gave us a complete and frank
rundown of the dty activities
from their perspective. These
meetings were held in the City
Council Chambers and were
open to the public. Notice of
meetings was in the Daily Pilot,
plus notices were sent to some
300 members. How many peo-
ple attended these informative
meetings? Very few, other than.
the association directors.
Council meetings are held
every other Monday and are
open to the public, and they are
broadcast live on Channel 3.
Each meeting is rebroadcast in
its entirety twice. Planning
Commission meetings are held
twice monthly and are open to
the public.
I am president of the Balboa
Coves Community Association.
We have received great cooper-
ation from the city on placing
utility lines underground, the
methane gas problem. Hoag
Hospital's future construction
plans adjacent to Coast High-
way, and new streets and land-
scaping here in Balboa Coves.
My point is this: The infor-
mation is available from pre-
sent sources.
It has been our experience
that the mayor and City Coun-
cil members are accessible and
responsive.

City's parking ban
won't solve the problem
"It is a commercial street,
not a residential street, and it is
not the city's responsibility to
provide parking spaces for resi-
dents along·a commercial
street,_• said Peter Naghavi,
manager of transportation ser-
vices for the city of Costa Mesa
("Overnight parking ban enact-
ed for Old Newport Boule-
vard,· Dec. 19). l'Wenty busi-
nesses have signed a petition to
restrict the parking along New·
port Boulevard between 15th
and 17th streets. The intent is
to clean up the street and elimi-
nate motor home parking.
There are only seven business-
es between 16th and 17th
streets.
We residents at Snug Harbor
and El Nido 1tailer parks',
located between 16th and 17th
streets, all know how ugly they
look. We don't want them park-
ing there either. We don't want
all the beach traffic and vaca-
tioners to think our wondedul
little city all looks like this. The
city thinks allo~g ~o . .
overnight parking will elimi-.
nate motor home storage. This
will penalize residents and
make it difficult to find parking
close to home.
Many residents have called
the Costa Mesa Police Depart-
ment's parking hotline this year
complaining about motor home
and vehicle storage but got no
response or actio~. ~y is ~e
72-bour parking limit not being
enforced? Common sense
would tell us this alone would
eliminate vehicle storage in this
area. What about one day a
week of restricted parking on
each side of the street in the
early morning? This \¥Ould
eliminate this prpblern and
beautify our street..
If the city can't enforce exist-
ing parking laws, how can we
residents believe more restric-
tions will be enforced and solve
problems? How can this city's
lawmakers let two trailer parks
exist with the combined space
capacity of 118 spaces and
think they can take away their
overnight parking without
some parking problems? Com-
mon sense should be applied.

School district's money
woes raise concerns
The article "School officials
split on proposed education ini-
tiatives• by Husein Mashni in
the Dec. 27-28 issue of the Dai-
ly Pilot raises several items of
concern.
First, the initiative as intro-
duced attempts to address so
many issues that the electorate
will be totally confused. Of
course, in bureaucratic par-
lance, that may be the objec-
tive.
Second, today elected offi-
cials, school boards included,
seem to feel that the solution
to most problems is to raise
taxes or issue bonds. One of
the only protections available
to the taxpayers is the two-
thirds majority requirement to
pass such bills.
TIU.rd, and most obvious to
me as a retired businessman, is
the seeming lack of fiscal
responsibility by the controlling
bodies. Newport-Mesa needs
$15 million to $30 million in
capital improvements. Where
have these boards been? As a
business person, if I did not
budget operating costs, mainte-
nance and capital improve-
ments, I would have been con-
sidered financially incompetent.
But then, how much did our
new edifice, the District Educa-
tion Center, just cost the dis-
trict?

My.ford IrvineS rei!Jf!, ended
with his mysterious d"eath
Fifty years ago.. Myford Irvine
arrived in town.
Myf ord, or Mike, as he pre-
ferred to be called, was the
younger son of James Irvine,
owner of the Irvine Ranch, whidl
at that time stretched from the
Upper Newpprt Bay to Laguna
Canyon and from the Pacific
Ocean to Saddleback Mountain.
Under James Irvine, it was strict-
ly an agricultural enterprise with
citrus, lima beans, sugM beets
plus cattle grazing on a thousand
hills. Myford's older brother,
James Junior, was the heir
apparent who had been groomed
to take over on the death of his
father. Unhappily, James Junior
died before his father.
In the meantime, Myford had
been shuttled off to San Francis-
co to oversee the Irvine interests
in that city. There he was able to
indulge in his favorite pastimes:
golf and playing the piano. In no
way was he groomed to run th~
Irvine Ranch. Then, in 1947, with
the death of his father, Myford, ·
with considerable reluctance,
inherited the mantle of the man-
agement of the Irvine Ranch.
When the new owner of the
Irvine Ranch arrived, HarrY
Welch, secretary of the Chamber
of Commerce, assembled 25 or
30 of the town's leading citizens
to have lunch with the new man
on the block. Les Steffensen and
I were designated as co-toast-
masters. To the horror of the
audience, we turned the wel-

To the surprise of many.
Myf ord, in his quiet way, opened
the door to the transition of the
Irvine Ranch from a purely agri-
cultural enterprise to urban
development. No matter how
niuch some of us regret the loss
of the ugood old days,. the
change was inevitable. 1\vo and
a half million people decided
they simply had to live in Orange
County. Agriculture had to go,
and Myford Irvine set the stan-
dard for the orderly development
of the Irvine Ranch.
As far as the outside world
could see, Myford was a content-
ed man. He was happily married,
the ranch development was pro-
gressing as planned, and he was
playing golf regularly at the new
Irvine Coast Country Club. He
was taking an active part in com-
munity affairs and was one of the
wealthiest men in the state. lt
would appear that he didn't have
a care in the world. Then disaster

"On Jan. 11. 1959, Myford's

two shotgun blasts through the
stomach and a (.22-caliberJ slug
through the brain. No notes or
clues were found to explain why,
which opened a Oood tide of
speculation. Names like Mickey
Cohen, gambling interests in Las
Veqas and the [Mafia] in general
have popped up to account for
some underworld connection. To
be sure, if he died by bis own
hand, the method was certainly
unique. If gangland related, it
lacked much in the way of
finesse.
"Only two things can be said
with certainty. Obviously, Myf ord,
had problems. But whether mon-
etary, marital or mental, he took
the answers with him.•
Myf ord Irvine was a good

and generous. Unhappily, in
his death he garnered the pub-
licity be had shunned all his
life.

Findhig a place to rent.
Honest. '
Thomason, a handy special-teams
player and backup tight end from Corona
del Mar High, will be, well, homeless
shortly after Super Bowl XXXIl from
Qualcomm Stadium when bis heavily
favored Packers face Denver on Sunday.
Thomason, who became the first local
football player to compete in a Super Bowl
last year when the Packers defeated New
England at the Superdome in New
Orleans, still yearns to live in the
a off-season where he grew up. But bis
parents have moved from the area and
buying a place isn't practical.
•Do you know of any places for rent?"
Thomason asked, forgetting that
sportswriters seldom double as property
managers.
At any rate, bis want ad should read
something like this:
1Wo-Ume Super Bowl player (perhaps
champlon) seeking cozy rental tor football
off-season in Corona del Mar area, from
Peb.ruary to July, or wtW tralnlng camp
opens. Need plenty of elbow room for a
6-loot-4112, 250-pound physique. Green
and yellow-colored walls are optional.
Thomason won't exactly be on the
streets when Green Bay gets back in town
following the big game, but the fifth-year
NFL veteran, who bas made a living
playing special teams, is anxious to return
to his roots.
•Are thete any football camps in the
(CdM) area?• Thoma.son asked in an
inquisitive voice, as if looking toward the
future, realizing NFL careen are short.
'Ibomason. a former CdM ,6.thlete of

in Coach Mike StarkweatheI's program.
will once again be among the lonely
hearts dub band today when the Packers
,. and Broncos partidpate in Super Bowl
Med.la Day at Qualcomm.
Those who approach Thomason and
other non-marquee players who have free
time during Media Day are generalll\
asked the most blzarre questions. Last

Last MUOn, Fox color commentator

In this season's victory over San

with a huge play on special teams,
recovering an onside kick late in the
game as part of Green Bay's hands team.
"That's been my livelihood for five

Thomason said. •1 take a lot of pride in

a little unfair. I think it'll be a closer game.
But I'm definitely ready and excited about
the game.·
Thomason, often a blocker in
short-yardage situations, said it was
tougher playing this year because
everybody was shooting for the defending
Super Bowl champions.
"Every team was coming to get us,"
Thomason said. "It wasn't as easy to
repeat."
It bas always been an uphill climb for
Thomason, who signed with Cincinnab as
a nondrafted free agent out of University
of Oregon.
The Bengals went 3-13 and 5-11 m
1992-93, Thomason's first two years m the
NFL, then he was cut in training camp
1994 . Green Bay picked him up the
following year and he's been there ever
since.
"I've definitely been very fortunate,
considering where I am now and where 1
was (three) years ago," Thomason said.
Thomason, Cd.M's Athlete of the Year
in 1988, was tall and lanky in high school,
believing all along that swimming, no(
football, would be his ticket to college.
Dave Holland, CdM's football coach
during the Thomason years, said he was
afTaid one year that Thomason might
choose water polo instead of football in
the fall because he was so good in the
pool.
"When Thomason showed up for
summer camp, that really made our day,•
said Holland, whose team would recover
from an 0-4 start in the autumn of 1987
and win the Sea View League title.
"In.high school. he was by far the bast
player on the field,• said Mitch Melbon,
CdM's quarterback during the Thomason
era.. "The guy could've been an Olympic
swimmer, but he chose football and made

For now, Thomason will take an insid
