Segretti said.

Brandt's success was swift. By the

Fortune, Life and Westways.
His works and those of other artists
such as Millard Sheets, Phil Dike and
Barse Miller represented a new style
of painting: California style. This type
of painting depicted the lifestyle of
the Golden State throughout the
1930s and '40s.
Their works and paintings of other
artists of the time are the subject of
the exhibit "California Style: 1930s

doors m watercolors on paper,• Stary-

painbngs in an hour if they wanted
to."
In 1947, Brandt and Dike opened
the Brandt-Dike Summer School of
Painting in Corona del Mar and taught
the California style to artists who
painted local landscapes, includmg the
Newport Coast and Balboa Bay.
•Rex Brandt is one of the real mas-
ters in this group, even though he
considered himself the kid of the
group,• Stary-Sheets said recently at
a lecture about the exlubit."
Many art collectors would agree.
During a recent tour of the museum's
exhibit, Brandt was approached by a
couple from Huntington Beach who
overpeard him discussing his paint-
ings.
"l can't believe it," said an excited
Leslie Mattingly, after meeting
Brandt. "We've had a painting of his
for years."
Her husband, Richard, said the
painting, "The Ketch,· was pur-
chased at a Laguna Beach art gallery
years ago and is their favorite in ~eir

A ltliougb Brandt admits be

that are part of the collection.

his work -including ·1 don't know
where they got that from,• and "I
ruined that painting by putting those
fishermen in" -fall from his mouth.
But Brandt, who has. painted more
than 6,000 watercolors, embodies his
art. He is an expressionist who paints
with feeling and can see life and
movement in everything from trees to
rocks.
•Look at this painting," be said as
he pointed to ·Racing Sails,• his 1947

ORANGE COUNTY FAIR-
GROUNDS -Orange County
Market Place officials on
Thursday publicly defended
their plans to expand their
weekend event agamst outspo-
ken swap meet vendors and
others who fear the plans could
be bad news for them.
Swap meet operator TelPbil
Enterprises has proposed
expanding the weekend event
to include a classic car exhibi-
tion gallery, an area dedicated
to wholesale manufacturers, a
new farmers maiket and a
Thursday evening summer and
spnngtime street fair. ·
On Thursday, TelPhil offi-
ci.als outlined tpeir proposal for
the Fair Board, and lf given
final approval, they bope to
unveil the expanded Market
Place in March or April.
But some swap meet ven-
dors and residents who live
near the fairground aren't
entirely sold on the idea.
Because some of the '60 clas-
sic cars sbown inside the
gallery would be for sale, Costa
Mesa Planning Com.mission
member Linda Dixon said she
hopes the classic car gallery
would not be just a fancy used-
caI lot.
TelPhil officials said they
only expect between 20% and
30% of the cars in the gallery to
be for sale.
"We really want to create a
museum experience, not a
used-Cill lot,• said Jeff Teller,
TelPhil's director of speaal pro-
jects.
Others who attended the
Fair board meeting raised con-
cerns about the planned manu-
facturers illea, a new section
TelPhil officials see as a smaller
version of a factory outlet cen-
ter.
A handful of manufacturers
would set up shop in large met-
al cd!go containers approxi-
mately the size of tractor-trail-
ers and sell their wares, often at
below-retail prices.
While some vendors have
cried foul because they fear the
wholesale manufacturers will
undercut their prices, fair
neighbors voiced concerns
about the growth of the event.
"lf tlus is five or six !contain-
ers) to start with, if it becomes
successful, will it turn into 10 or
12?" asked College Park resi-
dent Chuck Huddleston.
"Because then it becomes a
problem"
FcllT Director Randy Smith
said before anything 1s
approved, the fairground
should listen to its neighbors
and closely monitor the size of
the swap meet.
"Given our expenence last
year with Cirque du Soleil, I
would like to see a community
meeting." Smith said.
TelPhll officials said they
plan to hold such a meetmg .

NEWPORT-MESA -Though
bank ro~beries in . Newport
Beach doubled in 1997 from tbe
previous year, despite an overall
decline in ·such crimes in the
Southland, FBI officials say
locals have no cause for alarm.
While there were two bank
robberies in Newport Beach in
1996 and four in 1997, with such
small numbers Hwhen you say
they've doubled that kind of
makes more of it than it is," said
FBI Robbery Coordinator Bill
Rehder. •Tue overall trend is
down significantly.•
According to an FBl report
released this week, 749 ,bank
robberies took place in 1997 in
Los Angeles, Orange and five
neighboring counties -a 33%
dip from the 1,126 reported the
year before. The report said last
year's number mar~ a 20-year
low in the region.
There were three bank rob-
beries in Costa Mesa last year,
compared with eight in 1996,
and the combined Newport-
Mesa figures parallel the
region's decline, Rehder said.
Orange County bad 144 bank
robberies in 1997, compared
with 183 the year before, he
said. In Los Angel~ County, the
dip was even more dramatic,
with 757 robberies falling to 403
over the same period.
Rehder said his office com-
piles statistics for Orange, Los
Angeles, San Bernardino, RJver-
side, Ventura, Santa Barbara
and San Luis Obispo counties,
and that bank robberies have
been declining steadily since
1992, a year that saw 2,641 of
the crimes throughout the area.

· Federal officials attribute the
decline to· several factors,
including media coverage of
bank surveillance photographs.
Also, more banks are
installing Plexiglas barriers,
metal detectors and portals that
control passage to and from the
building, Rehder said.
Another factor, he said, is the
Federal Uniform Sentencing
Guidelines of 1987, which
requires people convicted of
bank robbery to serve at least
85 % of their sentences.

will find out if they will get to go
after Olympic gold next month in
Ndgano, Japan, or il their bid to
become the best couples skating
tedITl in the world will be derailed
by an untimely injury.
Sands and Meno, a married
couple who live ill lrvine and train
at the Ice Chalet under the guid·
ance of renowned coach John
Nicks, have been training hard
for the Olympic Games next
month m Japan.
The couple, three-time United
States champions who competed
m the 1994 Olympics, are still
scheduled to leave for the games
next weekend, Nicks said.

forcing the couple to pull out of a
competition just minutes..._ before
they were scheduled to take the ice.
Meno is still nursing the nag-
ging injury as the Olympics draw
closer and only recently returned
to full-scale training.
The couple has already quali-
fied for a spot in the Olympics,
but next Tuesday, members of the
Unite~ States Olympic Commit·
tee are scheduled to be at the Ice
Chalet to see the couple skate
through their routine. U Meno's
ankle is still too sore to compete,
the couple may be bumped from
the United States team. Commit-
tee officials are expected to
announce the couple's status at a
press conference right after they
see them skate, officials said.
Sands and Meno were unavail-
able for comment Thursday, but
Nicks said the ankle is about 70%
healed and should be ready for
next week's test.
Skater Nancy Kerrigan had to
undergo a similar pre-Olympics
committee test when questions
about the condition of her knee
were raised after a thumping
allegedly ordered by fellow
skater Tanya Harding.

COSTA tvfESA -In the waning minutes
of Thursday night's Pacific Coast League
girls basketball duel between Costa Mesa
High and Laguna Beach; it became clear
that the hosting Mustangs were trying to
get the ball to freshman Nancy Hatsushi.
Costa Mesa had a commanding lead
and would end up winning, 72-20, but the
squad had to accomplish something before
leaving the floor and that was to get every-
one in the scoring column.
Hatsushi, who has been starting at the
point position and was the hero in the Mus-
tangs' last game with back-to-back three-
pointers to put away Laguna Hills, hadn't

·offense effect:lvely, which is a point guard's
primary responsibility.
So. when the plays were being called to
put the ball into Hatsushi's hands, her
habits weren't immediately broken.
With 1:20 left in the game, Hatsushi bad
a clear path to the bucket for a layup, but
she gave it up to teanunate Kim Nguyen,
who stood at the opposite block wide open.
It would have been an assist had
Nguyen not been fouled. The pass still
resulted in two points as Nguyen hit both
free throws.
With 23 seconds remaining, though,
Hatsushi broke for the basket as Evelyn
Powers grabbed a rebound {Uld made a
perfect throw to the 5-foot-3 guard. The
shot banked in and she got the foul.
The crowd and, even
more, the Mustangs' bench

Newport Harbor (1-2), defending league
co-champion, was ahead 24-6 before a
grappler actually competed. David Hurta-
do (140 pounds) started the meet after sit
forfeitures, giving the Sailors a 30-6 advan-
tage when he pinned Cd.M freshman
Aaron Hacker in 1:50.
"If (Hacker) would've gotten out of that
first round without a pin, I think you
would've seen a pretty good match," said
CdM Coach Gary Almquist, whose first-
year wre5'}er is 4-4 this season.
Kramer's win over Peredia was worth
four points, but the Sea Kings had no
answer ar any otl:}er weight.
Newport Harbor junior Jeremy Munoz,
defending league champion at 111 who
was ineligible at the beginning of the sea-
son, is trying to get back in shape. His 6-3
decision over Cd.M's Jesse Agh.ravi was the
closest match of the contest.
•By the time the league finals come
around, Munoz will be able to rock 'n roll.•
Stansbury said.
Newport Harbor senior Kaz Hlrama
(215) pinned Corona de! Mar senior Mark
Rowe in 4:44 to capture the Sailors' tliird
win on the mat. Hlrama led 7-2 after two
rounds. Rowe scored in the first round with
a two-point ta.kedown to grab an early
lead.
For Hlrama, experienced in judo. 1t was
his first wrestling win.
•twas fairly happy with the way Peredia
wrestled tonight, but he's still got a lot to
learn,• Stansbury said. •we've got quite a
few first-year wrestlers (like Peredia}, so
we're a young team with only two seniors
(Rigo Pinon and Cbannin Tweedy)."
Pinon (130) was a state qualifier last sea-
son, after finishing third at the ClF South-
ern Section Finals and fifth at the Masters
Meet. Tweedy forfeited lus 135-pqund
match to Cd.M's John Cox.
Newport Harbor juruor Brad Lim (112)
and sophomore Jared Dutton (145) are also
defending league champions
In the 171-pound match, AgbraVl led
Munoz after one round, 2-1, then Munoz
tied it with a one-point escape early m the
second. With 0:30 left, Munoz went ahead
4-2 after a takedown.
Kramer's victory at 152, improving his
record to 11-2, was Cd.M's only saving
grace.
"Kramer's a stud, and he's low-keyed,"
Almquist said. "And for Rowe, that was
only bis second match ever and his first on
varsity. Mark easily would've gotten a for-
feit victory on N, but he stepped up on var-
sity. At least he was here to step up."
