the Upper Newport Bay

Friday.
·I was just in Washington yes-

to Cox's com-
ment, "Sacra·
mento is not as
tumultuous as
Washington,
but it's nice to leave Sacra-
mento and be down in Orange
County."
Although Assemblywoman
Marilyn Brewer clidn't comment
on the Clinton fiasco at the event,
she did begin her speech men·
tiorung the Daily Pilot.
"I think we all have read the
Datly Pilot's coverage and the
headline a few months back
about it being too bad that the
legislature can't make up their
minds about funds," she said.
"But we had made up our minds
about the Back Bay a long time
ago. It may have looked like (we
were indecisive), b1,1t we were
qwet about the funds because we
clidn't want anyone to tap into the
funds."
With all tpe speculation in
Washington over whether or not
the president is lying, it's nice to
know that sometimes there is a
vahd reason why our elected offi-

Smell the roses
On Thursday. Sakloka Farms
spokesman George Sakloka told a
gathering of about 35 Costa Mesa
Chamber of Commerce members
U\at no matter how busy he gets,
he always tries to take time out
and appreciate what he has.
Sakioka encouraged the cham-
ber crowd -a rather high-pow·
ered group of local politicians,
business leader.; and activists -
to do the same as often as they
can.
Some attendees immediately
put Sakioka's philosophy into
practice.
City Councilman Gary Mona·
han, a chamber director, said Fri·
day he was trying to make time in
lus busy schedule to smell the ros-
es.
And Mesa Consolidated Water
District General Manager Karl
Kemp said he, too, took Sakioka 's
message to heart.
"There's a rose in my front
yard and I paused Thursday night
and again Friday morning to take
a sniff,• Kemp said. ·

A t age 80, teacher's aide Wilma Grant is a positive role 1
model for students at Sonora Elementary School.
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Wilma Grant
of Newport Beach used to spend
much oi her bme crocheting, knit-
ting and watching television. But
when her daughter, Norma Edel-
hauserr started teaching second
grade at Sonora Elementary
School. Grant decided to lend a
helping hand
Grant, who turns 80 today, is up
at 5:30 a.m. every morning and
spends her days helping Edel-
hauser's students, many of whom
have very limited English-speak-
ing skills.
"There is a great need," Grant
said. "People tell me they're bored
but there's no reason to be bored;
there are so many needs and so
many places that need volun-
teers.•
She has always volunteered in
the community by crocheting
quilts for homeless people or help-
ing out in soup kitchens, but for
Grant, helping out at the school
every day has been a unique chal-
lenge.
"I'm very tired when I get borne
each day,• she said. "But it's very
rewarding. I love to help my
daughter out. We have alW'ays
been very close.•
Due to an illness, Grant recently
had to forego her volunteer efforts
and stay home. During that time,
she received several "Get Well"
cards and letters from the students.
"They were so happy to have
her back," Edelhauser said.
"When she's not there the students
ask about her and say they miss
her.•
Having worked at the school for
almost two years, Grant said she'
frequently sees the previous year's
students in the school halls.
"They always tell me bow
much they miss having me in their
classes with them," she said.
Although some students are
tempted to call her "Grandma,"
Grant sa.ys she maintains a pro-
fessional relationship with the
students and bas them call her
Mrs. Grant.
•using my name denotes
respect,• she said. •A teacher
should get respect."
In addition to helping children
improve their English, Grant's
presence in the classroom provides
a source of companionship for
.some students who come from
troubled homes.
"There was one boy last year
who c.ame from a troubled family,•
she said. "I think it helped him to
get close to me."
Offering first-hand insight, 7-
year-old Daniel Labrada said,. "I
like Mrs. Grant because she's
nice."
Even though there are students
who challenge her patience at
times, Grant said she is still sur-
prised by the impact she's had on
their lives as a volunteer teacher's
aide.
~There was one boy that I bad a
hard time with last year," she said.
~But at the end of the year he gave
me a rose and ldssed me on the
cheek."

Friday morning, Grant was sur-

For years I've been telling my son

every time he represented the top

to tell my son, "Yeah, I know that

ttention to it.
What happened there earlier
aturday night was huge,
though. First, the women's bas-
ketball team ...
This team is magical. U the
girls that play for Russ Davis'
Vanguards never win another
game, they are the best women's
team I've ever seen play in the
Golde~ State Athletic Conference.
A few years back, Point Loma
Nazarene had a strong team.
District 3 champs (back when
there was a District 3) and
GSAC title-holders for three
straight years. Camille ArmiJO
paced the Crusaders and
ochelle Lightner, Shannon
brams and Christy Stevens
itched in.
Then Fresno Pacific took the
ominance. Erica John was the
oman for the Sunbirds.
Concordia with Gitte Myer
d Heather Carll came next.
It's Davis' tum with Elaine
'ttemore, Amee Pina, Gina
ojoJa, Kristi Wright, Alana
empton and the rest of the gang.
Those other teams were
oubled, though.
Point Loma bad some internal
roblems. Fresno.Pacific wasn't
e nicest group of girls you've
er met, either.
1llis season's Vanguards just
appens to be that, though. The
~st group of girls. The respect
ey show for each other, their
ipponents, their coaches and
em.selves is astounding.
Davis says its a result of the
of people he recruits.
I'm sure be is correct, but you
ve to wonder: Does this occur
ore than once?
I SW'e hope so, because if you
an't get out to see them this
eo..son, you've lost a special
pportunity.
The men's team ...
It's no seaet. I'm a women's i
asketball freak. I'd rather watch :
omen's basketball than a men's :
ame any day. But I'd go back to
sec men's contest in a

· s a women's game on TV.
The atmosphere a t The Pit is
ectric for sec men's games.
The tiny gym rocks and the

SCC's Adam Dzierzynski nails a
buzzer-beater to lift the hosts to a
100-98 thriller over Cal Baptist.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
./
COSTA MESA -Students and fans hud-
dled on their feet iJt clusters on the gymna-
sium floor at Southern California College
Saturday night long after the game had
ended.
They needed to talk about it. The Shot,
that is. They needed to feel the remaming
bits of stardust that still lingered in the air.
Minutes earlier, the magic wand had
been waved and made The-Shot possible.
They still needed to savor it.
The Shot ... something out of a sports
fairy tale ... but reality for Adam Dzierzyn-
ski, the sec men's basketball team and the
fans that got to enjoy it.
Tue senior guard seemed to be running
without a plan as the final seconds ticked
down, but getting the shot off over two
defenders from the baseline was all the
plan Dzierzynski needed as the ball darted
through the net with the buzzer sounding

Coach Bill Reynolds said.
~1 think be had it in his
. mind that he was goirtg to
finish it. -
Dzierzynski, who reached his season
average of 17 points, had been creating all
evening as he also dished off 14 assists. But
his inventive play was doing nothing to
slow the visiting Lancers.
"To tell you the truth. we weren 't doing
much to slop them until the last couple
minutes o( the game, H Reynolds said.
The contest was a crucial GSAC match
for both teams. The win lifted the Van-
guards to 2-2 in conference play while Cal
Baptist slips to 1-3.
"People tend to underestimate the qual-
ity of play in the GSAC. But I think this
game proves that there are some _quality,
tenaciolis players in this conference,"
Reynolds said.
The Vanguards (13-9) jumped out to a
30-15 lead as the squad drained 13 of its
first 14 field goal attempts
with both teams playing
at a furious pace.
"We know we can't
sustain that," Reynolds.

sieals and rebounds were igniting fast
breaks, several that were capped off by
thundering dunks, including one that by
SCC's Terrence Wilborn that tied the score
at 78-78.
After Wilbom's dandy, the Lancers (9-
1 Ol put together the game's only other
streak, aside from the Vanguards' opener.
Martin Woods, Richard Hurt and Dennis
Weaver were turning turnovers and
rebounds into points and actually grabbed
a 91-83 lead with six minutes to go.
But SCC was relentless, sending the
packed house at The Pit into repeated fren-
zies.
With 1-11 remaining, Woods sank a
three to give Cal Baptist a 98-96 lead. It
would be the Lancers last score of the con-
test.
Wilborn rek:notted the score at :48 with a
putback off a Rod Scheuerman miss .
Cal Baptist took a b.meout to plan their
attack with 37 seconds left and an 8-second
differenbal with the shotclock, wlilcb
ensured that sec would get the ball back.
The Lancers never even got a shot off.
Wilborn bpped a Cal Baptist pass and
Scheuerman found the handle. Once
across the half-court line, Reynolds called a
timeout with six ticks left.
That's what led to The Shot.

What do you bid now?
A. No problem here. The only
abeolute force you have available ia
a c:u&-bi4 o( the enemy .Wt, so bid
two 1padee. That uy1 nothing
about the epade llllit • it simply is a
way of telling partner you have a

What action do ~ou take? ..
A. Obvioualy, someone is not being
quite truthful here and, while it is
winning policy to trust partner
moet of the time, it is most unlikely
your vulnerable opponents are skatr
ing on thin ice. We expect partner
to have a big heart fit and not much
else, but just in case partner's two
no trump was legitimate, advise
North you have spade values.

The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH £A.ST SOtn'H WEST ,. PUI 1 0 p ...
S• Pase 7
What action do you take?
A. There is a possibility that North
has three-card heart support., but
attempting to investigate that pos-
sibility is fraught with danger.
With no fit for partner'e suit, any
further action by you could become
experurive. P888.

A. Although you could eaaily have a
makable pme your way in one of
the majors, lbere ia no aafe way to
prpceed. We tuggest you take the
CO~f way out bJ tettling for a
probable plus score and eimply
defend one no trump. Pua. Without
a good opening lead, doubling bas

What do you bid now?-
A. There ia no really good bid avail-
able. Your auit ii not good eaough
to jump to three hearta, and you
might not be able to catch up if you
bid only two heart.I. All in all, we
like a 'high reveree' bid of' three
clube. At leut that conveys our
playing strength to partner.
Q 6 • Bot.h vulnerable, as South you

The biddllur ~roceeded: WEST NO EAST 80trl'B
I• Dbl S• 't
What action do you take?
A. East's preempt has done ita job.
You bavejuat enough high-card
strength to suggest that, should you
paas, partner might not be able to
compete again. Therefore, you have
to take your life in your hands and
bid four hearte now. There are
many hands partner can have
which would give you excellent play
for four hearta.
