NEWPORT BEACH -A Santa Ana
teenager was gunned down in front of
Newport Harbor Hlgh School on Tues-
day afternoon in what police believe
was a tight involving a handful of out-
of-town gang members.
No students were injured in the
shooting, wluch occurred around 3 p m.
between the high school campus and
nearby St. Andrews Presbyterian
Church. Police were still hunting for the
shooter late Tuesday.
The vtctim. who remained in guard-
ed condition Tuesday rught. and several
companions were apparently drawn to
Newport Harbor to meet a female stu-
dent, reportedly a freshman.
Sgt. John Desmond said that before
the shooting erupted, a fistfight appar-
ently broke out between six males -
four m one group and two m another -
all believed to be from out of the area.
·.
After the fight broke up, the four
males in one car returned to the area.
One reportedly pulled out a handgun
and fired a single shot. hitting the
teenager, police said Newport Beach paramedics carry off a 17-year-old shooting victim from Santa Ana after an attack in front of Newport Harbor High.
The victim, who was standing bes1de
a silver Toyota Camry when he was shot
in the stomach, was put back into the
car by friends and dnven several hun-
dred yards west to the mtersoction. oI
15th Street and I.rvi.ne Avenue, where a
motorcycle police officer was parked.
The officer called for an ambulance
and assisted the victim until paramedics
arrived, Desmond said.
The Victim was ta.ken to the trauma
unit at Western Mectical Center m San-
ta Ana, where he was listed in guarded
condition. He suffered a~ingle gunshot
wound through his body, uesmond said.
•[We) don't think he's going to die,"
Desmond said.
After the shooting. the guriman and
three others fled the area in a wtute ot
light-blue 1980s Buick or Oldsmobile
with front-end damage. Desmond said.
In addition to the shooter, pollce were
still searching for the car and other
details about the incident. ·
"We have reason to believe at this
time that it was gang-related involving
people from Santa Ana," Desmond said.
Names of the victim, the Newport
Harbor student and others involved
were not released by police because of
their ages. The Newport Harbor student
was reportedly waiting, for the victim
and three other friends to pick her up

Students troubled by school's tragedies
•From death of water polo player to
Tuesday's shooting, the bad times are
beginning to wear on the campus.
By Christopher Goffard, Datly Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Even before the police
tape had been removed from the scene of a shooting
outside Newport Harbor High School on Tuesday,
some students were speculating worriedly about
their school's hi.story of high-profile nusfortunes.
They remembered Gray Lunde, the 14-year-old
student who died of a heart attack in October 1995
after collapsing at the side of the pool during water
polo practice. And they remembered the Chevy
Blazer crash of May 1997, wbich left one student
dead and two others with brain damage.
Now, it appears, a neighborhood normally associ-
ated with well-trim.m.ed lawns and upscale security
has seen a minor gangland invasion.
Police say gang signs were flashed du.ting an
41gUD1ent that left a 17-year-old Santa Ana teen,
who was not a Newport Harbor student, with a gun-
shot wound to the abdomen. The shooter and his
companions are still being sought. ....
·Our school hasn't nad very good luck with
things like this,• said freshman Courtney Opp, 15.
•People talk about it. They just say that our school is
cursed with bad luck."
Freshman Gina Limones, 14, said she hoped to

School board member Serene Stokes added. "lt's
Just a horrible tlung to happen. Not only do (those
involved in violence} endanger their own lives, they
endanger the lives of a lot of ilmoc:ent people."
As further details of the shooting trickle forward
today, students will be trading theories and scraps of
information.

Edwards said he would like to
see city officials go after an annu-
ity, worth somewhere around $10
million, to fund future dredging
work. Such a stash set aside
specifically for dredging could
avoid long d~ys in the cleaning
process while officials seek feder-
al or state funding.
Also on the financial front,
Edwards said he hopes to work
toward the council goal of
increasing the city's general fund
reserve from 10% to 15%.
Edwards said the annexation
of Newport Coast, a· 4,700-acre
unincorporated county area
between Corona del Mar and
Laguna Beach, is another hot
council topic for this year.
If the council decides to pursue
adding the area to the city and
county officials approve the
annexation later this spring, the
city could earn about $2.4 million
a year 10 property taxes and other
new revenues from Newport
Coast residents.
Money from the annexed area
could pay for a laundry list of city
projects currently waiting for
funding, including neglected
repairs to sewers, streets and oth-
er city property, Edwards said.
Under questioning from
Deputy District Attorney John
Anderson, Carpenter said he
approached police on Aug. 5 after
he concluded O'Neill was serious
about the plan.
Police supplied Carpenter with
an inoperative Srnjji & Wesson
.38-caliber handgun 'with blanks,
then followed the pair secretly .. as
they 'wound up Coast Highway
on Sept. 9 toward the Capitola
area.
Carpenter said O'Neill contin-
ually brushed off questions about
the target.
"He said you'll find out when
we get there,• Carpenter said.
briefly O 'Neill did, however, say the
target's mother-in-law wanted
him dead, owing in part to a nasty
custody battle involving the tar-
get's son, Carpenter said. Fire damages
mortgage 'offices
A blaze that started in a New-
port Beach mortgage company
office Monday evening caused
$7,000 damage before s'prinkJers
doused the flames and kept the fire
from spreading, fire officials said.
The fire started in the rear office
of Presley Mortgage Co., 3 Corpo-
rate Plaza, said Lt John Blauer of
the Newport Beach Fire Depart-
ment.
Blauer said the fire was out by
the time the 15 firefighters arrived
at the scene thanks to the automat-
ic sprinklers activating right above
the area where investigators
believe the fire started.
"The fire started in the area of a
power strip,• he said. "Whether it
was a short or if it was a cord, it's
not clear."
Blauer said the fire melted a ·
trash can before spreading across a
desk and climbing a wall unit,
where it damaged several books.
"Once the flames reached a
high enough intensity of heat, the
sprinklers activated,• Blauer said.
"If they had not had automatic
sprfn.klers, the damage would
have been worse.•

I met Nonna Mccorvey a

of people who knew her identity.
That came about because I was

to meet Jane Roe, her attorneys
said she wanted to remain

al days talking with her. ,
She was then living in a les-
bian relationship with a tough,
protective Dallas contractor
named Connie Gonzalez that
bas continued on and off ever
since. She was a desperately
insecure, lonely, poorly educated
woman, frightened at the possi-
l>ility that she had become a
national icon and wanting only
tp avoid public recognition. She
also wanted a fnend, and in the
years that followed. she kept in
fouch with me by letter and
phone.
She surlaced publicly 10
. years after the decision because
some things were being written
and said about Jane Roe that she
·deeply resented. Once her iden-
tity was known, she was
embraced by pro-choice leaders,
and all the things she feared
·came about. She was snubbed,
vilified and shot at, driving her
fo periods of depression, alco-
holism and even attempted tui-
c;ide.
. In· 1990, she lived in Orange
County for six mon\}ls, and we
got together several times. On
·one of those occasions, I played
· back for her our taped conversa-
tion in which she described in
colorful detail the rape in which
the child that became the cen-
. terpiece of Roe vs. Wade was
conceived.
· · It was a wonderfully convinc-
. l,ng story that was pure fiction,

w.hich was another compelling
reason why she insisted on
anonymity for so long.
I last saw her several years
ago in Dallas. We talked at Con-
nie Gonzalez's home, where the
front door is still pockmarked
and scarred by shotgun pellets
fired by three men in a pickup
truck who have never been
caught. The pellets raked the
living room where McCorvey
had been sleeping and missed
her only by fortuitous accident.
Mccorvey told me that day:
"It seemed like every time I tried
to better myself in life, I always
failed. Nursing school, cosmetol-.
ogy school, relationships. The
only successful thing in my life
was Roe vs. Wade."
She plunged into the fight in
Dallas, working for an abortion
clinic and carrying the pro-
cboice message wherever and
however she could. The anti-
abortion troops regularly littered
her front lawn with baby clothes
and vilified her as a murderer, a
strange sort of anachronism
since the decision came down
long after the Roe baby was
born. She is now a young
woman who -the last I heard
-has resisted the efforts of her
mother to connect. Meanwhile,

the people who showcased Nor-
ma also hurt her deeply in less-
obvious ways.
Mccorvey, an ill-educated,
lesbian, ex-alcoholic with a hair-
Uigger temper and a good mind,
is refreshingly honest, terribly
insecure, volaWe, dresses mostly
in sweats and jeans, smokes
incessantly, and talks like a
Marine drill sergeant. Her rough
edges were a constant embar-
rassment to the National Organi-
zation for Women and other fem-
inist activists who used her, but
at arm's length. She knew that
and resented it deeply.
More than anything else,
Mccorvey wanted to be loved -
something that had eluded her·
all her life. That's why two years
ago she abandoned the pro-
choice people to throw in with
an organization called Operation
Rescue that once called her a
mwderer.
"They genuinely love ·me,"
she said. "I felt like the pro-
choice people only cared about
what I could do for them, not
what they could do for me."
We'll see. I haven't heard
from Mccorvey since that
change of heart, so I don't know
if she has been disappointed
again or if she has indeed been
given the love she needs so des-
perately.
McCorvey was thrust into the
public limelight by pure acci-
dent, and she deserves some
peace -even if the issue she
inadvertently triggered has

Some of Thomason's friends called him
late Monday night after the Packers

circled by NBC color commentator Paul
Mcguire after the infraction.
Referees, though, called the penalty on
starting tight end Mark Chmura,
which, as we discovered Tuesday,
was the correct call.

for the heavily favored Packers. "A couple of my friends called

•After a long year, with five preseason
games, to end tlus way is just tough

Fans cheered loudly for the Packers,
even if they couldn't bring home a second
consecutive Super Bowl banner.
"One thing that kind of separates us
from other teams," Tho.mason said, "is
that we really know our crowd, our fans.
The fans are awesome and the town's so
supportive. It was tough coming back and
seeing the crowd at Lambeau, because.
you want to win for them almost as much
as for yoursell."
Thomason, Green Bay's special teams

unrestricted free agent now after

He would like to return to the squad

Many believe the section plans
to remove parochial schools
Mater Dei, Santa Marganta and
the combined entity of Servite (all

IN A THRILLER
Vanguards put all five
starters in double figures
in 83-79 GSAC victory.
By Motly Yanity, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -It
had the ma.kings \I I '
of the second consecutive thriller
for the Southern California Col-
lege men's basketball team.
After a 100-98 victory over Cal
Baptist Saturday, the Vanguards
found themselves in another
barn.burner with Concordia on
the Eagles•' home court in Irvine.
But with their own rambunc-
tious crowd spurring them on,
SCC took control of the Golden
State Athletic Conference contest
and pulle~ away to an 83-79 vic-
tory.
The Vanguards moved them-
selves lo 3-2 1n the G.SAC while
the Eagles fell to 2-3.
Concordia got off to a 10-4
start before sec whittled off a 10-
0 run to steal the lead. After that,
the first half that saw seven ties
and five lead changes before con-
cluding in a 39-39 deadlock.
The Eagles shot over 60% in
that stanza, but cooled off as the
Blue and Gold made adjustments.
"In the first half we were
putting the ball on the floor too
much playing NBA one-on-one
style," SCC Coach Bill Reynolds
'said. "Once we got the defense
moving we got our offensive flow
going.•
The Vanguards have estab-
lished themselves as a strong
team in the transition and made
that work as they took the lead for
good with 16:41 remaining as

•Everyone who plays in Uus
league wants to be a starter,
that's everyone's goal," said
Thomason, who caught nine
passes for 115 yards and one
touchdown dwing the season.
Thomason, who will live on
Balboa Peninsula in the
off-season, said there could be
some major chances in store for
the Packers, including the
departure of Coach Mike
Hobngren.
uHis dream is to one day be a
general manager and hea~
freshman Dennis Keane took a
steal all the way down for a layup.
A 16-6 surge }>ut the Van-
guards in firm control with a 67-
56 advantage at 9:45.
"That's sec basketball, ..
Reynolds said of the fast-paced
transition play. "You have to have
it to complement the half-court
game. We can run with anybody."'
Defensively, the Vanguards
were tenacious nabbing 13 steals.
Senior center Terence Wilborn
controlled the defensive glass
with seven rebounds.
Once again, sec put all five of
its starters in double figures, led
by Keane's 20. Newport Harbor
High product Justin Mcintee and
Adam Dzierzynsld each added
17.
Southern California College
upped its overall mark to 14-9.
Of the approximated 500 fans
at the game, more than half
appeared to be rooting for the vis-
itors. During the Vanguards' sec-
ond-half explosion, in which they
led by as many as 14 points -the
gym echoed with chants of "S-C-

"We have a school of about
