Police were still hunting for the shooter late Tuesday. The vtctim. who remained in guard- ed condition Tuesday rught. and several companions were apparently drawn to Newport Harbor to meet a female stu- dent, reportedly a freshman. Sgt. After the fight broke up, the four males in one car returned to the area. By Christopher Goffard, Datly Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Even before the police tape had been removed from the scene of a shooting outside Newport Harbor High School on Tuesday, some students were speculating worriedly about their school's hi.story of high-profile nusfortunes. They remembered Gray Lunde, the 14-year-old student who died of a heart attack in October 1995 after collapsing at the side of the pool during water polo practice. And they remembered the Chevy Blazer crash of May 1997, wbich left one student dead and two others with brain damage. Now, it appears, a neighborhood normally associ- ated with well-trim.m.ed lawns and upscale security has seen a minor gangland invasion. Such a stash set aside specifically for dredging could avoid long d~ys in the cleaning process while officials seek feder- al or state funding. Also on the financial front, Edwards said he hopes to work toward the council goal of increasing the city's general fund reserve from 10% to 15%. Edwards said the annexation of Newport Coast, a· 4,700-acre unincorporated county area between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach, is another hot council topic for this year. If the council decides to pursue adding the area to the city and county officials approve the annexation later this spring, the city could earn about $2.4 million a year 10 property taxes and other new revenues from Newport Coast residents. Money from the annexed area could pay for a laundry list of city projects currently waiting for funding, including neglected repairs to sewers, streets and oth- er city property, Edwards said. Under questioning from Deputy District Attorney John Anderson, Carpenter said he approached police on Aug. 5 after he concluded O'Neill was serious about the plan. Police supplied Carpenter with an inoperative Srnjji & Wesson .38-caliber handgun 'with blanks, then followed the pair secretly .. as they 'wound up Coast Highway on Sept. 9 toward the Capitola area. Carpenter said O'Neill contin- ually brushed off questions about the target. "He said you'll find out when we get there,• Carpenter said. briefly O 'Neill did, however, say the target's mother-in-law wanted him dead, owing in part to a nasty custody battle involving the tar- get's son, Carpenter said. Fire damages mortgage 'offices A blaze that started in a New- port Beach mortgage company office Monday evening caused $7,000 damage before s'prinkJers doused the flames and kept the fire from spreading, fire officials said. The fire started in the rear office of Presley Mortgage Co., 3 Corpo- rate Plaza, said Lt John Blauer of the Newport Beach Fire Depart- ment. Blauer said the fire was out by the time the 15 firefighters arrived at the scene thanks to the automat- ic sprinklers activating right above the area where investigators believe the fire started. "The fire started in the area of a power strip,• he said. "Whether it was a short or if it was a cord, it's not clear." Blauer said the fire melted a · trash can before spreading across a desk and climbing a wall unit, where it damaged several books. Could mMft ~ • i :.Newpon ~ta Mesa Daily Piloc .~5 years later, Jane Roe remains an elusive figure Y ou've been seeing a lot the last few days about the 25th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that spelled out the con- ditions under which women who so choose can get a legal abor- ~on in this country. . One of the great ironies about fhis land.mark case is the idenbty of the woman on whose behali it was filed. Probably no human being was ever less-prepared or more unlikely for the role she was asked to play once she sur- faced publicly than the Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade. I met Nonna Mccorvey a month after the abortion deci- sion was handed down, and for 10 years I was one of a handful of people who knew her identity. That came about because I was sent to Dallas by a national mag- azine to do an article on the two young women attorneys who argued her case. When I asked to meet Jane Roe, her attorneys said she wanted to remain anonymous. When I promised to protect her identity, a meeting was arranged, and I spent sever- al days talking with her. , She was then living in a les- bian relationship with a tough, protective Dallas contractor named Connie Gonzalez that bas continued on and off ever since. She was a desperately insecure, lonely, poorly educated woman, frightened at the possi- l>ility that she had become a national icon and wanting only tp avoid public recognition. She also wanted a fnend, and in the years that followed. she kept in fouch with me by letter and phone. She surlaced publicly 10 . years after the decision because some things were being written and said about Jane Roe that she ·deeply resented. Once her iden- tity was known, she was embraced by pro-choice leaders, and all the things she feared ·came about. She was snubbed, vilified and shot at, driving her fo periods of depression, alco- holism and even attempted tui- c;ide. . In· 1990, she lived in Orange County for six mon\}ls, and we got together several times. On ·one of those occasions, I played · back for her our taped conversa- tion in which she described in colorful detail the rape in which the child that became the cen- . terpiece of Roe vs. Wade was conceived. · · It was a wonderfully convinc- . l,ng story that was pure fiction, · conceived -she told me -to . h.~lp her get an abortion. When it became part of a case heard by the Supreme Court of the United · States, she was sure she would ~er some dreadful punishment if this deception was discovered, LISTBN UP joseph n. bell ·· w.hich was another compelling reason why she insisted on anonymity for so long. I last saw her several years ago in Dallas. We talked at Con- nie Gonzalez's home, where the front door is still pockmarked and scarred by shotgun pellets fired by three men in a pickup truck who have never been caught. The pellets raked the living room where McCorvey had been sleeping and missed her only by fortuitous accident. Mccorvey told me that day: "It seemed like every time I tried to better myself in life, I always failed. Nursing school, cosmetol-. ogy school, relationships. The only successful thing in my life was Roe vs. Wade." She plunged into the fight in Dallas, working for an abortion clinic and carrying the pro- cboice message wherever and however she could. The anti- abortion troops regularly littered her front lawn with baby clothes and vilified her as a murderer, a strange sort of anachronism since the decision came down long after the Roe baby was born. She is now a young woman who -the last I heard -has resisted the efforts of her mother to connect. Mccorvey, an ill-educated, lesbian, ex-alcoholic with a hair- Uigger temper and a good mind, is refreshingly honest, terribly insecure, volaWe, dresses mostly in sweats and jeans, smokes incessantly, and talks like a Marine drill sergeant. Her rough edges were a constant embar- rassment to the National Organi- zation for Women and other fem- inist activists who used her, but at arm's length. She knew that and resented it deeply. More than anything else, Mccorvey wanted to be loved - something that had eluded her· all her life. That's why two years ago she abandoned the pro- choice people to throw in with an organization called Operation Rescue that once called her a mwderer. "They genuinely love ·me," she said. "I felt like the pro- choice people only cared about what I could do for them, not what they could do for me." We'll see. I haven't heard from Mccorvey since that change of heart, so I don't know if she has been disappointed again or if she has indeed been given the love she needs so des- perately. McCorvey was thrust into the public limelight by pure acci- dent, and she deserves some peace -even if the issue she inadvertently triggered has turned into an uncompromising war m wh.Jch , once again, reli- gious and moral absolutes have I taken up arms against the secu- lar rights affirmed 25 years ago by the Supreme Court of the Uruted States. The core of guys we have work well together, and I'd hate to see all of them get separated, But it's the nature of the business.
