chase the ca.st and crew of a new
Tom Hank's movie indoors at the
fairgrounds today, but it shouldn't
hold up production at all, said the
film's publicist.
·we had planned on being
indoors here on Thursday, any-
way," said Marsha Robertson, a
publiost with 20th Century Fox,
the film's production company.
"So, if it does rain, we'll just do
that filming indoors on Wednes-
day."
The movie, •That Thing You
Do,• is about a rock band and is
set in the mid-1960s.
The crew 'began filming con-
cert scenes with about 500 extras
in the fairgrounds' Grandstand
Arena on Monday. They plan to
wrap up production there on
Thursday.
"Everything's been going real-
ly well," Robertson said. "We've
been tracking the rain, and it has-
n't been a problem.
This isn't the only Orange
County site that will appear in
the film. The crew spent a sub-
stantial amount of time filming in
the city of Orange's downtown
area before coming to Costa
Mesa
However, unlike the Costa'
Mesa set. the Orange venue was
open to the public.
.J Suspected car· vandal-white
supremacist ord;ered to trial
• Allan Eric Carlson pleads not guilty to felony
charges he shot out the windows of 28 cars in East-
bluff. His tri~ begins Feb. 9. -
By Carolyn Miiier, Daily Pilot
SANTA ANA -The criminal
trial for Allan Eric Carlson, sus-
pected of vandalizing several cars
in a Newport Beach neighbor-
hood, is set to begin in Orange
County Superior Court next
month.
Reputed as a wltite suprema-
cist in bis hometown of Glendale,
Carlson, 32, pleaded not guilty to
one felony count of vandalism
and one felony count of posses-
sion of a deadly weapon at bis
arraignment Monday in Orange
County Superior Court. Presiding
Superior Court Judge David
Carter scheduled Carlson's trial
for Feb. 9. .
Newport Beach police arrested
Carlson Dec. 19, 1995, on suspi-
cion of shooting the windows of
28 European cars in Newport
Beach's Eastbluff neighborhood
and causing more than $5,000 in
damage. However, only one BB
pellet was recovered as evidencf!
because victims had already
cleaned up the splintered glass
before authorities arrived, poU.ce
said.
• Police found a BB rifle and two
spice jars filled with a lArge quan-
tity of BBs and pellets on the froQ.t
seat of the black J-londa Accord
Carlson was driving Dec. 19,
according to police. Also in the
car were brass knuckles and IIUlp
pages of the Eastbluff neighbor-
hood and Los Angeles and Ventu-
ra county neighborhoods, police
reported. 1
At a preliminary hearing in
Harbor Municipal Court earlier
this month, a Newport Beach
police detective testified that
Carlson told officers his reason for
driving ,around the neighborhood
late at night was because he was
an tnsomniAc, just like Robert De
Niro in the 1976 movie •Taxi Dri-
ver." -
Carlson ls most notorious for
allegedly distributing more than
800 inflammatory and racist fliers
tnto packages of food at several
grocery stores. In September
1995, a Los Angeles County
Superior Court judge granted an
injunction preventing Carlson
from distributing the tacist fliers
in supermarkets in three counties,
including Orange County.
The fliers list a Glendale tele-
phone number ·for a white
supremacist organization, the
•voice of Reason,• whose sole
member is Carlson, according to
an official from the Anti-Defama-
tion League, which has been fol-
lowing the case.
Carlson is being held at
Orange County Jail in lieu of
$20,000 ball. He faces a maxi-
mum of three years in state prison
if convicted,
·Drug testing plcµis for school near approval
• Under the proposal student athletes and cheerlead-
ers at Corona del Mar High school will be tested for
recreational drugs, but not steroids.
By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -Corona
de! Mar Higll School officials are
putting the final touches on a pro-
posal to test student athletes and
cheerleaders for recreational
drugs next school year.
Attorney Spencer Covert
reviewed the proposal, developed
two months ago by the school's
Mandatory Drug-Testing Com-
mittee, for the district in Decem-
ber and has submitted a list of 15
recommended changes to m~e
the plan more sped.fie.
The changes include listing
the specific sports for which ath-
letes will be tested, listing the
specific soentific names for the
drugs instead of their street
names and detailing the exact
procedures to be followed during
the test.
Covert also recommended the
school determine how often and
exactly where random testing will
occur.
School principal Doo Martin
could not be reached for comment.
School officials expect the plan
to come before the school board
within the next few months.
Corona del Mar High athletic
boosters, coaches and Martin
started looking into testing the
students last swruner after a U.S.
Supreme Court decision granted
public schools the right to require
athletes to undergo drug tests.
The school polled parents in
,ebeNm-tha!r4haughts.regard-
ing drug testing.
Out of the 80 parents who
responded to a school drug-test-
ing questionnaire, 86% were in
favor of a random drug-testing
program for student athletes. Of
those in favor of the program,
81 % said the program should be
mandatory and most favored
inf onning parents and head
coaches of the test results.
The program will randomly
screen athletes for commonly
abused drugs -such as alcohol,
marijuana, cocaine, ampheta-
mines, heroin and PCP -as a
deterrent.
School officials, however, have
said they don't believe there is a
drug-abuse problem at the high
school •
Additionall~ there will be no
tests tor performance-enhancing
_drugs, such asJUlAbo.lic:steroids.
Martin has said it is a matter of
money. He estimated the cost for

incident was reported to police,

have gotten rid of the weapon,
McDonough said.
Tius is the second alleged gun
brandishing incident reported at
the school in a month.
The first incident was Jan. 12
when a 16-year-old Harbor High
student, who was rid.mg in a car

allegedly waved what appeared
to be a real gun at an elderly res-

That suspect is being
revtewed for expulsion under the
district's "zero tolerance" policy
which treats "look-alike"
weapons as iI they were the real
thing, according to Bonnie
Maspero the school principal.
The other students riding in the
car with the suspect were sus-
pended for five days, she said.
"Most people were shocked ...

was just fooling around,·
Maspero said of the first incident.
"So I don't think people think

Maspero said that Tuesday's
inodent was possibly a reflection
that more students are aware and
concerned with the gun issue.

amount of rain is about 5 and 3/4

this time of year, Seto said citing
the climatic maps. And February
and March are expected to also
fall below normal, he added.
This is one of the storms to
keep your eye to the sky, except
when you are driving, of course.
"People should watch for low-
lying areas, like ponds of water,

Local police agree. While there
are no speoal preparations
planned for Costa Mesa or New-

areas to watch out for because
they are vulnerable to flooding.
In Costa Mesa the areas to be
cautious of are 19th Street and

ALISO VIEJO -Frustrated
yet again in search of answers
to her team's perplexing four-
game losing streak, Costa Mesa
High girls basketball coach
Sbontel Sherwood found the
solution in the form of a ques-
tion Tuesday night.
"l basically posed the ques-
tion to them,• Sherwood said of
her halftime discussion with the
visiting Mustangs, who led last-
pJace Aliso Niguel by a paltry
27-22 margin midway through
their Pacific Coast League clash.
"l said the responsibility for
whether or not we were going
to win this game was on them,
and I asked them if they were
willing to respond. l told them I
could come in here and yell at
them about the thing' they
needed to work on, but basical-

themselves.•
The Mustangs' expressed
their unanimous response in the

they left off in the fourth,
exploding for the first seven to
push their advantage to 53-25
