By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -Corona de! Mar Higll School officials are putting the final touches on a pro- posal to test student athletes and cheerleaders for recreational drugs next school year. Attorney Spencer Covert reviewed the proposal, developed two months ago by the school's Mandatory Drug-Testing Com- mittee, for the district in Decem- ber and has submitted a list of 15 recommended changes to m~e the plan more sped.fie. The changes include listing the specific sports for which ath- letes will be tested, listing the specific soentific names for the drugs instead of their street names and detailing the exact procedures to be followed during the test. Covert also recommended the school determine how often and exactly where random testing will occur. School principal Doo Martin could not be reached for comment. School officials expect the plan to come before the school board within the next few months. Corona del Mar High athletic boosters, coaches and Martin started looking into testing the students last swruner after a U.S. Supreme Court decision granted public schools the right to require athletes to undergo drug tests. The school polled parents in ,ebeNm-tha!r4haughts.regard- ing drug testing. Out of the 80 parents who responded to a school drug-test- ing questionnaire, 86% were in favor of a random drug-testing program for student athletes. Of those in favor of the program, 81 % said the program should be mandatory and most favored inf onning parents and head coaches of the test results. The program will randomly screen athletes for commonly abused drugs -such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, ampheta- mines, heroin and PCP -as a deterrent. School officials, however, have said they don't believe there is a drug-abuse problem at the high school • Additionall~ there will be no tests tor performance-enhancing _drugs, such asJUlAbo.lic:steroids. He added that there was about an hour and a half delay before the incident was reported to police, during which the suspect could have gotten rid of the weapon, McDonough said. Tius is the second alleged gun brandishing incident reported at the school in a month. The first incident was Jan. 12 when a 16-year-old Harbor High student, who was rid.mg in a car with friends during lunchtiJUe. allegedly waved what appeared to be a real gun at an elderly res- ident who lives near the school. That suspect is being revtewed for expulsion under the district's "zero tolerance" policy which treats "look-alike" weapons as iI they were the real thing, according to Bonnie Maspero the school principal. The other students riding in the car with the suspect were sus- pended for five days, she said. "Most people were shocked ... and a lot of people think this kid was just fooling around,· Maspero said of the first incident. "So I don't think people think we're in gang land -they realize it was silly student maldng a silly move.· . Maspero said that Tuesday's inodent was possibly a reflection that more students are aware and concerned with the gun issue. SAVE AN EXTRA 10% ON ALLIN STOCK RUGS SALE ENDS FEB. Aliso Niguel, however. was also in good spuits until the interrmss1on, earrung leads of 6- 3 and 9-7, then staying within stnking dlstance by hammering the smaller Mustangs on the boards. ·we didn't play that badly 10 the first half, but we didn't box out," Sherwood said ·We were more aggressive and physical on the boards in the second half • JuruorpostChanelAnderson (10 boards), senior Kabe Gro- gan (10) and sophomore Julie Collett (siJc) led the rebounding reversal. Anderson matched Kim's team-high t 7 points and Grogan scored 12 off the bench.
