Is it a good idea. I won-

Granted, conventional wis-

That's what Newport Harbor's
Jason Deere did to his three vic-
tims at the Sea View League
finals Saturday at Irvine High.
•1 just took 'em down, each
with a single or double leg,•
explained the 230-pound Deere
in rather matter-of-fact language.
Deere, who competes in the
275-pound category, ran his
record to 31-5 with the triumphs,
lifting his two year record at
Newport Harbor to 71 -12.
A junior, he's ranked No. 3 in
CIF and he says he expects to see
the No. 2 rival from Rosemead at
El Rancho with hopes of aveng-
ing a 6-4 loss in a duel for fifth
place at the Fountain Valley Five-
Counties Invitational.
Deere polished off Ryan Dick-ae of Irvine in the championship
1howdown at the 1:53 mark, hav-
ing reached the title-showdown
with victories over rivals from El
Toro and Woodbridge with pins
in 1 :38 and 1 :08.
There was not a lot of surprise
in the fact Deere swept to his sec-
ond straight league champi-
onship, but in tenns of pins, the
three falls raised his number of
victories this season by that
avenue to •onty• 10.
Another Newport Harbor
wrestler, 103-pound Matt Large,
claimed a league crown, taking
the measure of Brian Clark of El
Toro in a time of 3:37.
A junior and seeded No. 1 at
l03 (18-5 at that weight) with a
first-ro\llld bye, Large pinned
l>oth of his foes.
Six.others .from Newport Har-J>or adtl Corona del Mar qualified
for the ClF Finals, where the top
three in each category joining a
Celd which sends six on each
~etght level on to the Masters at
Pountain Valley Feb. 24.
. The Masters produces six from
each weight for the State Cham-
i>ionships at the University of
fad.fie in Stockton.
Others qualifying for the CIF
bivi.sion ll Finals are Corona. del
~s Nema Namdar (second at

Leaming the meaning of 'heart'
• Corona del Mar High's girls
soccer team has seen plenty of
adversity, and endured; Julie
Garrison is at the heart of it.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
T hrough more than 10 years of
playing soccer, Corona del Mar
High senior Julie Garrison had
never suffered a major injury. But long
before a bothersome calcium deposit
formed on her heel this season, forcing
her to repla~ one cleat with a running
had learned bow to play with pain. ·rm having a lot of fun, but it's
frustrating,• said Garrison, a shining
light in a somewhat dreary season for
the Sea Kings girls soccer team.
·we are all very motivated and have
a lot of heart, but we've been through a
tremendous amount of adversity."
The Sea Kings are 6-14-1, 1-7 in
league, heading into the final two games
of the season this week against a pair of
Sea View League foes. Cd.M won just
two Sea View games in 1994-95, when
Garrison eerned honorable mention
all-league recognition.
But, according to first-year coach
Matt Etchison. the leadership displayed
by
Garrison, as well as fellow senior
trl-captains Katie Williams and Morgan
Mead, has kept the rest of the youthful
squad from going through 1he motions.
•Along with the other captains, Julie
has stepped up big-time in the
leadership department,• Etchison said.
•As a matter of fact, I'm still very much
enjoying this team. because that
leadership bas kept the girls focused
and competing, rather than throwing up
their hands and giVing up.•
Garrison tefules to gi.ve up, llvmg by
her No. 1 personal goal of giving 100%
effort in every minute of every game,
regardless of the score. Even when she's
less than 100% physically.
•Ever since late December, she's had
a lot of pain from her heel." Etchison
explained. ·aut she's played through it
the whole time. I think that's a testament
to her character right there."
Garrison has not only played, often
without the benefit of her accustomed
acceleration and always with the
nagging pain she said only adrenahne
helps dilute, she has shone.
She threaded a booming blast
through an impossibly narrow window
of opportunity (under the crossbar near
the left post) for the Sea Kings' lone goal
4t a. 2-1 loss to Newport Harbor
Thursday, bringing her total to an
estimated 10 goals for the year.
·she's obviously one of our offensive
cominu"ity college baseball
leaders, and we really rely on her to
produce goals,• said Etchison, who has
continued to get such productlon,
despite shifting bis veteran standout
from striker to nudfield.
·she loves to score, but she's adept at
passing, as well. I moved her to midfield
a couple weeks ago, because she was
marked so closely all the tune up front,
and I thought it would allow her more
room to attack and use her skills.•
Garrison, who also plays on the
forward line for the Fountain Valley Woll
Pack under-19 club team. as well as with
the Olympic Development Program's
under-19 squad. said she has embraced
the change. .
opportunities and dlstribute the ball a
little more,• Garrison said •tt's much
rucer to play without being marked The
Newport game was a good example.•
Gamson said her eye-popping goal
against the Sa.ilors was Tewardi.ng
because of it's impact on the game
(brea.la.ng a scoreless deadlock in the
17th minute). But she seemed otherwise
UD11npressed with the amount of skill
needed to put the 25-yard free kick
above the outstretched bands of the
goalkeeper and into the net.
•1t felt good because it came against
Harbor, but it wasn't as satisfying as a
win. I judge everything on an extremely-
personal level. so when we don'J win, I
can't help but take it personally.•
Ganison did express pride in the
effort Cd.M continues to deliver and
anticipates a similarly conscientious
condusion to the le4SOD this week.
•1've had some uccess on tbe clUb
level, so I mow what it is to win. And. I
al.so know what 1l is tO loee ru take that
with me when I go play in college
(et Prineetob). ·rm looking forward to the future,
but I'm not looking put thele last two
games. If we could get a Wint that woWd
be great.
Victory, perhaps, would be the perfect
p1un1riller.

the scoreboard, 70-48, in Saturday
night's nonleague clash. Newport Coach
Bob Dukus was justifiably encouraged.

how well I thought we pldyed tonight,~
said Dukus, whose squad fell to 12-11
overall, but gained some valuable confi-
dence for the final week of the Sea View
League season.
"Sure, we had too many turnovers
(24), and we missed some easy shols
which could have made things a lot clos-
er. But, r think, we're pleying better for
longer stretches against really good
teams."
The Sailors dueled the perennially
powerful Vtk:ings nearly even through
the first seven minutes (trailing just 16-
14) and kept the margin under 20 until
the final minute of _.ie third quarter,
despite some red-hot Marina shooting.
"I thought Newport did a heck of a
job,· Marina Coach Pete Bonny said. "If
we had an average night shooting, it
would have been a lot closer."
