CORONA DEL MAR -Recent
and proposed annexations m
Newport Beach have one thing in
common: They are making the
largest school district trustee zone
even larger.
Represented by school board
member Serene Stokes, the Coro-
na del Mar zone is the biggest
zone in the district, officials said.
And it is slated to receive an
influx of new schools and stu-
dents from the Bonita Canyoo
and Newpprt Coast area.
The most recent census of vot-
ers in the area -taken m 1995 -
showed lhe Corona del Mar zone
had close to 23,000 registered vot-
ers. In contrast, the census
showed 8,600 voters m northwest
Costa Mesa Zone 1, represented
by Ed Decker, and about 12,000
in Newport Beach Zone 3, repre-
sented by Mdrtha Fluor.
With the annexations dnd pro-
jected growth in lhe area, former
school board member Jim de
Boom said lhe population in lhe
zone will easily mushroom to
35,000.
"I've always been in favor of
redistricting," de Boom said.
De Boom will discuss redis-
tricting possibilities at a zone
polibcal action committee meet-
ing Friday morning at Corona del
Mar High School. School board
members Stokes and Judy Franco
will be at the meeting.
Because a census would be
necessary before redistricting
could occur, de Boom said it
would be at least two years before
the zones could be changed.
"We haven't done this m 20
years," de Boom Sdid. ·But there
has to be a greater balance m the
number of registered voters m the
zones. When we did our research
two years ago, we found there
was a real imbalance."
Added Stokes: •There are
more schools m the zones, too.
With all the new areas that dre
coming in, it's only going to get
bigger."
De Boom said there also needs
to be greater equity in the num-
ber of schools m each zone.
"People in the Newport-Har-
bor zone say everytlung's great,
but some of the people in the
Corona del Mar zone say they're
under-representeq," de Boom
said
Even though board members
said they represent the whole dis-
1 lrict and dfe elected by the whole
dastnct, Kay Sandland, a PTA
president at Corona del Mar High
School, said some parents still feel
they're not getting fau represen-
tdtion.
"I understand and I appreciate
the fdct lhat bodrd members are
representing the whole district,"
Sandland said "But I don't know
tf that means they have as much
understandmg (of the zoneJ."
At one of the public meetings
about Bonita Canyon last year,
Sandia nd said one school board

just four games remaining in the season,

Since the rain typically stays outside the

This resulted in many forced shots and
turnovers as Newport sank just 26% of its
field-goal attempts (12 of 47) and made 18
miscues.
Jackson, fue Sailors' season scoring
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL
leader, was li.cruted to Just flve points as she
could hit just one of 10 attempts -a three-
pointer.
•(Jackson) was playing shooting guard
a lot tonight, and we were also trying to get
the ball inside to April (Ross), but we could-
n't get either of them going." Bettencourt
said. "When you're shuttmg them down,
it's going to be hard for us to win."
Ross, a 6-foot-l sophomore, hit for seven
points and grabbed a team-tugh 10
rebounds with three blocks.
The Tars' lead.mg scorer for the evening
was Kristen Urban with 11 points, a feat
she accomplished despite playing m foul
trquble.
Bettencourt's squad will have the oppor-
tunity to end its five-game losing streak
when Corona del Mar, which has an eight-
game skid going, visits Thursday.

• Collett's free throw with 0:02 left is difference as Mesa
staves off a valiant upset bid by the rival Eagles, 36-35.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Piiot
COSTA MESA -Costa Mesa
High senior Julie Collett took a
practical approach to her two free
throws with two seconds left and
the score tied against cross-town
and Pacific Coast League girls
basketball rival Estancia Tuesday
rug ht.
With most of the emotional
spectators mumbling under their
breath, in hopes of influencing the
outcome they desired, Collett fig-
ured she bad nothing to lose.
"I was pretty relaxed, because I
knew even if I missed both, we
were still tied, so there would be
overtime,· said Collett, who tb.ick-
ened the already palpable sus-
pense by arong the first
foul shot off the heel to a
mixture of groans and
cheers.
But Collett, who had
missed 14 straight shots
(11 field goals and three
free throws) since her first-
quarter three-pointer,
swished the second to
clinch a dramatic 36-35 tn·
u.mph. The ·win allowed
Mesa to reclaim the Lady Collett
Bell trophy, which goes to
the annual intra-city series winner,
for the first tune since 1994.
The win also enabled the Mus-
tangs (10-15, 6-1 in league) to
remain tied for first with Aliso
Niguel with three league games
remaining.
"To finally get the bell is so
exciting,· said Collett, who helped
the hosts handle Estancia (7-15, 3-
4) for the fifth tune in their last sue
meetings.
The Eagles, who like Mesa
were hoping to extend a three-
game winrung streak. were
dewed ultimate satisfaction after a
valiant comeback, which took
nearly four quarters to execute.
Estancia senior Amy Deming
knotted the score with an 8-foot
jumper with 20 seconds left, creat-
ing the first deadlock since 2-2
and erasing what was once a 10-
point deficit.
·we were right there, but (Col-
lett) hit a big free throw,• said
Estancia CQ<lch Paul Kirby, whose
team had wbn two straight one-
point verdicts, before experienc-
ing the other end Thursday. •we
played hard and played a lot bet-
ter in the second half. This was a
good game. which could have
gone either way.•
Mesa Coach Shontel Sher-
wood, who wiped her brow at the
buzzer m an emphatic gesture of
relief, was generous with praise
for the visi tors.
"Estancia played a heck of a
game." she said. "I thought we
were out of control most of the
game and neve.r showed much
poise. But (The Eagles) forced us
to play the way we did, so give
them credit. It was ugly, but it's a
wm and we'll take it "
The Mustangs, who trounced
the Eagles, 47-28, in their first PCL
clash, appeared willing to seize
control and never look back when
a pair of three-pointers sparked an
8-0 run to create a 10·2 lead with
4:53 left in the operung quarter
The hosts, however. managed
1ust su: field goals over the next 24
minutes, as both teams
turned up the defensive
intensity
"(Estancia) made
some adjustments and
we didn't adjust to their
adjustments," Sher-
wood said.
Mesa led, 15-8, after
one quarter and 22-16 at
the half, but hit just 1 of
10 field-goal attempts in
the third penod to allow
the Eagles to close to
within 26-22.
Estanaa, led by the inside tan-
dem of seruor Amy DeIDlllg (12

and a Denung 18-footer pulled the
Vlsitors to withm 31·29 with 4·16

layin off a steal by teammate Lau-
ren Cassity answered a pair of
clutch dnving layups by Mesa
Junior Evelyn Powers to keep it a
two-point game, before Deming
forged the deadlock with her pull-
up Jumper in the lane
Mesa called timeout with rune
seconds left and Sherwood dia-
gramed a pick-and-roll with Col-
lett the catalyst on the wing
"They dropped a defender (to
intercept the roll), so I had to take
it,• said Collett, who drove base-
line and was whacked on the arm
while attempting a short jumper
·Julie is shooting about 60°'0
from the free-throw line, so I knew
she would make one of them,•
Sherwood said.
Powers also ca.me up big for

• When talking about the
strong tradition of Orange
Coast College's men 's
volleyball team, one word
keep popp ing up: Rustlers.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
Those pesky Rustlers appear and
reappear all over the Pirates' history.
Take last season, as the most recent
example.
The Bucs were charnpidns of the
Orange Empire Conference. Er, co-
champions. Guess who got the other
share? Golden West's Rustlers.
Coach Chuck Cutenese's squa:P
made it all the way to the State final
where they ran into and stumbled
against ... need we say it again?
Though this rivalry will again bum
and should light the way for the rest of
the conference, the st~f men's col-
legiate volleyball is ~ .. ~ this is the
last year the state will sanction a
championship, and state-sanctioned
competibon has already gone under in
Northern California.
"I'm amazed that men's volleyball
is in so much trouble at the collegiate
level when there are so many playenJ
who want to compete," Cutenese, who
is 82-24 after six seasons at OCC, said.
"It's disappointing.•
ln this last season to grab the state
hardware, Cutenese and bis Bucs will
again give it a go with a solid lineup
that, this year, owns a powerful mid-
dle.
Newport Harbor High product Josh
Richardson is in bis second season at
the middle blocker position with a
year of experience that Cutenese says
is vital.
"When I look back at the successes
we've had here, out middles were
huge factors m out offense in 1994, '96
and '97 when we reached the state
finals," he said. "You look at the 1993
and '95 when we didn't do as well, and
we had very young middles. It takes a
year to pick up the position and play it
well. The problem is they don't play
the game as fast in high school as they
do here.''
Richardson, a 6-foot-5 first team all-
conference selection, will jom return-
briefly
ers Mark Pozsgai (right sid~ hitter),
outside hitters Darin McBain, Dave
Spegon and Steve Jobes.
Despite losing both setters from last
season's squad, freshmen Ryan Hiskey
out of Edison High and Josh ~as
mussen from 1\ls1in will fill the voids.
"(Hiskey) possesses all the things
you want in a setter," Cutenese said.
"I can honestly say I went after him
harder than I've gone after any other
athlete .•
Cutenese's problem won't be in ~
ing spots on the Door, but keeping
egos satisfied as bis squad owns so
much depth.
"My major concern is bow well the
pla~rs who aren't on the floor a.re
going to respond to those who are. We
have a number of players of nearly
equal ability, .. Cutenese said. "There
are so many possibilities with this
team."
Ivan Mercer, who was a receiver on
Coast's football team in the fall, is 6-7
and will battle 6-4 Brian Brown,
Hoapili Dukelow, John Pecora and
Ryan Verd ugo for time.
They open on the road, tonight af 7,
at Cal State San Bemardmo.
