GREETINGS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE -.
By Tina Borgatta,~ily Pilot
' C OSTA MESA -Michael
Genco has been sending
Christmas cards to the
White House every year for the
last 49 years, and he's never
received a card back -until 10

"It's a gorgeous card," Genco
said of the belated Christmas
greeting. "And it's signed by
President Clinton and Mrs. Clin-

inside from her to me."

By Evan Henerson, lJaily,.Pilot
BALBOA PENINSULA
Organized sports are bound for
Peni.nlul°' Park once again.
After liability concems forced
a recreational hiatus, the city
and local soccer and rugby
leagues have figured out a way
to bring league play back to the
popular field adjacent to the
Balboa Pier.
The YMCA's adult soccer
league will hold two pract:k:e
games on the field· later this
month and the Back Bay Rugby
Club will hold two matcl;les in
early March.
To satisfy the city's risk man-
ager, park o£ficials must move
the soccer boundaries 100 feet
toward the beach. And some-
body -city, volunteer group or
otherwise -will have to shell
out $1,900 for protective fencing
to keep balls from flying into
ru;:ighbc~&%!~ Y::,:!::::!...."'g lat•--~~~
city will also videotape an entire
soccer match at the field March
2 to see how the new arrange-
ment works.
These provisions were jl.'lst
fine with the city's Parks, Beach-
es and Recreation Commission.
"We sit up-here and moan
that we don't have enough field
space, and here we have a field
that's not quite right,• commis-
sioner Gale Demmer said Tues-
day night. "It's a lot cheaper to
fix it up than to go out.and buy a
new field somewhere."
Last July. the city canceled its
contract with the YMCA after
risk man.ager auren. Parley
determined balls leaving the
field could hit cars or pedestri-
ans strolling along the board-
walk.
The city decision to remov~
the field's soccer goal posts an<t
softball backstop infuriated Jess
Sell, a Peninsula resident and
recreation enthusiast who
played softball on the field. A
handful of local bar and restau-
rant owners also said, since the
changes took ettect, soccer and
rugby players no longer come
by for a post-game meal or
drink.
At Sell's urging. community
services officials reviewed the
park design and agreed moving
the field's borders toward the
beach would take care of most
of the concerns, said city Recre•
atlon Manager D~ve
McConnell.
The 4-foot protective fencing
on the park's east and west
boundaries may also help,
McConnell said, provided some·
one will pay to install it. YMCA
officials have already said they
will not pay for the fence.
But at Tuesday night's com-
mission meeting, Douglas Boyd.
former president of the Peninsu~

tion, said he would try to rais~

District plans to address

•During an overcrowding study, Newport-Mesa offi-
cials find pupils at certain schools spend less time in
class than their peers. •.
By Juli! Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -What
began as study of the district's
overcrowding problem bas
uncovered a major discrepancy
among kindergarten programs in
Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.
And by the end of this month,
school board members could
revamp the district's kinder-
garten program by increasing
class time at some schools and
reducing class space at others.
. "I believe we have a responsi-
bility to make sure all our kinder-
garteners have an equal oppor-
tunity to learn." Superintendent
Mac Bernd said Wednesday.
"We have some k:indergarteners
in the district spending a third
less time in class than those in
other district schools. That is a
substantial amO\mt of time and
I'm not sure that is a good situa-
tion to have in our schools.•
During the overcrowding
study, administrators found some
c;iistrict kindergarteners spend
an hour more every day in class
than other kindergarteners.

nustees are looking at three
specific kinds of kindergarten
structures, all of which are in
place at one or more Newport-
Mesa schools. .
Nearly every school has an
"extended day" program in
which one kiDdergarten class
uses one room. Half of the class
comes early for individualized
time with the teacher, and the
other half stays late.
Some schools have a
"stacked" program, in which two
kindergarten classes use one
room. One class comes in the
morning, the other the afternoon.
Only Kaiser offers a "full
day" program in which one
class uses one room, but stays
the length of the school day.
Mariners Elementary School
began a stacked program two
years ago after a population
explosion forced 1t to cut back on
the space for the kindergarteners.
T be way Molly Lyon figures
it, "Each of us is only enti·
tled to one good idea in
life, and this is mine.• '
She's talking about the Great
" American Wrlte·ln. coming up
this Saturday at the Univemty
Club at UCI.
"For one day a year, for just
three hours, it's a way to get
people into the system.•
Last year, the 10th anniver-
sary of Molly Lyons' Write-in,
several hundred men and
women churned out more than
1,700 letters in three hours.
Dozens of specialists repre-
senting more than 40 activist
organizations were on band to
provide expert advice and infor-
mation on everything from
AIDS and abortion rights public
television and women's issues.
Writing letters to politicians
sometimes actually works. If
there 'are facts and data, along
with reasoned passion, the let-
ter is that much more effective.
And that's what the Great
American Write-in is designed
to accomplish.
Molly came up with the idea
while driving home from a
meeting of the politically active
group, Women For: Orange
County, an offshoot of Women
For: in Los Angeles.
At this meeting, the members
had been discussing a particu-
larly successful letter-writing
campaign they had JUSt finished.
"I thought, what if we could
get a lot of people together at
once to get information and
fred
m artin
write letters?" Molly recalled.
•At Women For: we'd get out
about 30 letters on an issue.
With a wnte-in, we could gen-
erate hundreds, and they'd be
better letters. I have this dream
that so many thousands of peo-l
ple come to the Write-in that we
have to rent Anaheim Staclium
It hasn't happened yet." J
The only rules at the Write-in
are that the letters should be
more or less in synch with the
issues in which Women For: is
involved: Advancement of
human and civil rights;
improvement of the quality of
education; advancement of
peace; preservation of natural
resources, and the improvement
of access to health services.
Though the women of
Women ror: are not what you'd
call Gingrichians, their agenda
hardly comes across as that of a
bunch of bra-burners, either.
A warm. pretty woman with
iron.gray hau, Molly Lyon was
born into a "very large, very _
poor• ltabM family in Vancou-
ver, B.C. She lived in an 1nte-
grdted neighborhood, and was
barely aware of racial intoler·
ance until she moved to South-
ern Cahfornia and joined a Pres-
byterian church in Fullerton.
"The church became
involved in helping a black
minister find a home for bis
small church ...
But everywhere they went,
they found racism. That the
minister was a man of God
apparently didn't count. That
he was black apparently did.
"J was astounded," Molly
recalled Tuesday over lemonade
at her Linda Isle home. • 1 felt
so strongly, This is wrong!"
And she's been an activist
ever since, except for some time
out to fight cancer.
Twenty years ago, Molly beat
breast cancer. Now she's recov-
ering from the after-effects of
chemotherapy to conquer lung
cancer.
"I don't know," Molly said,
anticipating my· question. "I've
never smoked, I've been exercis-
ing for 18 years, and I eat all the
right things. They have no idea
why I got the disease, I 1ust did."

thing. It's like taking care of a •
baby, you have to care fOJ it,

ln addition to Women For:,
Molly is a<;tive in Planned Par-•

•1 just believe that every citi·
zen should have enough food to
eat, decent shelter, a ch.an.ce at

care. That doesn't seem like too
much to ask, does it?" she asked.
Molly and her husband Leon
will celebrate their 49th
anniversary in May. They have
three children and six grand-
children, which gobbles up
much of her time. Plus her own
letter-writing campaigns. Molly
writes three or four letters a
week , mostly to Senators and
Representatives in Congress.
"It's part of my life; I can't

Several hours later, the crowd
gathered once again for Clecak
as Ristorante Prego, Irvine,
opened its Tuscan doors. Cele-

Carnevale, the Italian Mardi

that had come to celebrate not
only Carnevale, but the near
completion of Cleeak's new

children. One patron made the
mistake of asking Clecak where
the facility was located.
"I can't tell you that," she
replied. •The location is a secret
to protect the occupants.•
"Then how do the women
and children find it?• ques-
tioned another guest.
•They find it, believe me,
they find 1t when they need us,•
Clecak said.
The Prego gathering was a

he's got law

H e who lives by the

sword. The sword in this
case is the law.
Mayor Joe Erickson was
quoted in the Daily Pilot on Jan.
17 as saying •and, even though
I like Sid personally, I don't
think we at the city should treat
him any differently than any-
body else who has broken the
law."
What law did I break, Joe?
What about innocent until
proven guilty?
The story says:
•etty officials have decided
to drop charges th.at Soffer vio-

four inoperable Cadillacs in the

Why would the dty decide
to drop the charges, Joe? The
city bas more than $20,000
invested in legal fees in the
contempt charge plus the
$10,750 in towing and storage
charges. When do I get my day
in court?
The law required no less
than a 10-day notice to request
a hearing, to be mailed to the
property owner and the regis-
tered owner of the vehicles, by
registered or certified mail
before you could tow my vehi-
cles.
Perry Valantine, knowing I
was in Vegas, mailed a notice

received my Vegas address and
phone number on Sept. 1, and
Perry waited until Sept. 5, to
send me a courtesy notice
(which arrived one day after the
cars were towed).
Why, Joe, did Valantine wait
five days to send me the cour-
tesy notice, and did not send it

I f some city services, except the
Police Department and the Fire
Department, could be partially
reduced, I would agree that it
would be very fine to let New-

little property tax refund.
Eu.EN WILCOX
Newport Beach
I think the taxes should not be
refunded but used for the
greater good of all of us
Our biggest need is for some
open space. To start a fund so
-that when space becomes avail-
able the city is m a position to
buy it and convert it mto open
space public use, for walks like
the area around the Back Bay
Also, other needs we have are
for the continuing upgrade of
facilities at the beach, at park!'.,
at the library, and I'd like to sPe
the money used that way.

"Fail to plan, plan to fail.•
That's the way it's going to be
for the Southern California Col·
lege baseball team coming off an
uninspiring 14-35 season.
Coach Kevin Kasper, in his
first season at the sec helm, has
no plans to accept failure.
Kasper, who has lived within
15 miles of campus most of his
life, played second base/short-
stop for the Vanguard.s from
1985-89. He was an All-NAIA
District m and All-Golden State
Athletic Conference selection his
senior year.
After graduating with a Biolo-
gy degree, Kasper spent four
years in the San Francisco Giants'
organization, reaching as high as
Double-A ball in the Texas
League.
The last two years Kasper was
an assistant coach at Wood-
bridge.
For Kasper, the plan is for
pitching and defense to carry the
Vanguards.
Senior right-bander Kevin
Withers 1S SCC's No. 1 starter,
pitching in Wednesday's Open-
ing Day game at The Maste r's.
Sophomore right-hander .
Bryce Primm. will be the No. 2
starter and Kasper said he could
also see some DH duties.
After Withers and Primm, the
other two starting slots are up for
grabs. ln a surprise move, Kasper
said he's planning to use junior
left-hander Ila Borders in middle
relief this season instead of as a
starter
Borders who made history by
being the first woman in record-
ed history to pitch a men's colle-
giate baseball game two seasons
ago, struggled as a starter last
season, finishing with a 1-7
record. She's 3-11 lifetime at sec.
"We're trying to develop every-
one into role players and I see her
as an important part of the
bullpen staff,· Kasper said.
Costa Mesa Htgb product Matt
Harber, a sophomore right-han-
der who' transferred to sec after
a season at Orange Coast Col-
lege, looks like the No. 3 starter.
1Wo lefties, sophomore returnee
Ryan Holman and freshman Kel-
ly Lowery are in the mix. Right-
handed freshman Donovan
McReynolds is fighting for the
stopper role.
Senior Rick Humotoff, who
was a pitcher last season, dedd·
ed to try out for an everyday job
and is the starting light fielder.
He'll come out of the bullpen, too.
Kasper's only real recruit was
catcher Rob Pegg, a JC transfer
from Scottsdale (Ariz.) CC.
•Rob is a heads-up guy behind
the plate," Kasper said. "He's one
of the fastest guys on the team
and not because the others are
slow. He's just a fast catcher."
Sophomore third baseman
Mi.Ice Grasse, did some catching
last season, but will be making
the move to the infield. He should
bat sixth or seventh.
Senior shortstop Steve Dollas
is moving over 'from third. He,
Borders and Primm all played in
the SAskatchewan Major Base-
ball Summer League with the.
Swift Current Indians.
The other half of SCC's dou-
ble-play combination is senior
second baseman Brian Nolan. He
brings a left-handed bat into the
No 2 slot, and leadership.
Mike Caston, o left-handed
junior with some ~wer, and
Shane sowers, a sophomore who
came over from Orange Coast,
will platoon at first base. Sowers
wUl alSO fill in at DH and u the
tMID'& third catcher.
