One of life's
surprises walks in
through front door
There it was, mid-morning
Friday, and I was going
through my daily business,
(Iluddling through stories and
stats, quotes and quibbles (self
imposed, of course), when a truly
wonderful and equally unex-
pected experience crossed my
path.
. I was banging awtty on my
keyboard when a qwet, yet for-
midable presence walke~ into
the office. The short, stoc~y gen-
Ueman pleasantly requested a
few copies of certam edillons of
the paper, which ran m late Jan-
uary.
Overbeanng the man's con-
versation with a co-worker, I
came to learn this was Marshall
Ferguson.
Yes, Marshall Ferguson the
father of Jason Ferguson, the
Costa Mesa High boys varsity
basketball coach who suc-
cumbed to cancer Jan. 22.
After thanking us, Mr. Fergu-
son left the office. Something
told me to go after him, and I
tracked. him down iri the pyking
lot. I'm glad I did.
I never knew Jason Ferguson,
but in reading about him, and
after talking with bis dad, I felt I
had.
Jason, his father told me,
loved coaching basketball. He
was a fighter, who went the dis-
tance for his players. He truly
believed in people, often times
giving them second chances.
Ironically, Jason never got a sec-
ond chance.
He was diagnosed with
Wilm's 1\unor, a rare form of kid-
ney cancer, in Jan. of 1995.
His prognosis was bleak, but
Jason didn't let the disease over-
take his love of basketball. He
continued to coach courtside
nntil the final week of his 24-
year life.
When Marshall Ferguson
reminisced with me about the
recent year, he did so with pride,
melancholy and determinallon.
He said Jason's fight brought a
Jot of people together. A scholar-
ship fund is being set up, as well
as various basketball-related
~ents in his beloved son's
l)ame.
Marshall Ferguson never shed
a tear when.he spoke of his son.
Jnstead, he pr~ched about the
comfort h e took knowing that
when his son died, be did so a
good, loving Christian.
Yet, he divulged his pain
went beyond.the.death oI a.son.
Prior to Jason's cancer diagnosts,
Marshall Ferguson's wile had

Helping kids find
their way with
literary road maps
Lawrence Walter, a child psycholo-
-'-----gist at New York Univenity, says,
•Books provide children and
adults with road maps for. exploring
m..')>erlences, f eellngs and ideas.
•Books aren't the end-all solution to
helping children cope With childhood
challenges,• he says. •But they do pro-
vide parents with an excellent place to
begin ... talking about issues with their
children.•
To point out some of the best liter-
ary road maps and provide an incen-
tive for quality children's books, the
Association for Library Service to Chil-
dren, a division of the American
Library Association, recognizes out-
standing contributions to children's lit-
erature each year.
This year, the 75th Newbery Medal
for the most distinguished contribution
to children's literature went to Karen
Cushman for "The Midwife's Appren-
tice.• Peggy Rathmann, illustrator and
author of "Officer Buckle and Gloria,"
won the 1996 Caldecott Medal for
most distinguished American picture
book.
The quest for self esteem is among
the themes of "The Midwife's Appren-
tice," a story about a homeless waif
who became the midwife's apprentice.
Y oung adult readers may find the
tale's setting in 14th century
England far removed from their
own lives; but they should appreciate
the depiction of a heroine who wins a
battle that extends across time lines -
finding a name and a place in the
world.
For younger readers, "Officer Buck-
le and Gloria" is a tale of the antics of
police dog Gloria and earnest Safety
Officer Buckle. Filled with humorous
details, this selection delivers a lesson
above teamwork that should delight
audiences of all ages.
In addition to these top honors,
Newbery Honor Book selections
include "What Jamie Saw," best suited
for readers age 10 and above, dealing
with third-grader Jamie's efforts to
make sense of the violence of an abu-
sive home.
While what the boy saw may shock
some youngsters, it also may provoke
an exploration of important issues. For
Jamie, it ultimately yields an apprecia-
tion for the feasibility of turning poten-
tial tragedy into personal victory.

Dole-Cox '96? Or , .

SHOULD CONGRESSMAN CO,X
GET ON THE DOLE?
The sting of Conner political
commentator Pat Buchanan'&
surprising defeat of Texas Sen.
Phil Gramm in this week's
Louisiana caucuses may have
been felt all the way here in
Newport Beach.
.Just ask' Congressman
Christopher Cox.
Why's that?
Well, Cox's aspiration.s fOf
higher office are no secret.
He was a candidate for the
Senate for a short time in 1994
-that is until the well-heeled
Michael Huffington entered
the race and ruined that.
And now Cox's name has
surfaced as a possible vice
presidential candidate.
None other than the eru-
dite, conservative columnist
George Will has been drop-
ping Cox's name as a solid
running mate for Senate
Majority Leader and current
Republican frpnt runner Bob
Dole.
There's only one problem
with that. Cox is a big-time
Gramm supporter. But that
support may soon be moot.
Gramm, who along with
Buchanan is trying to best
Dole for the Republican nomi-
nation, has to all but win next
week's Iowa caucus to even
have a chance of staying m the
race.
So Congressman Cox may
need to find someone else to
back real soon.
Stay tuned.
u
ARE THE DEMOCRATS
UNFAIR?
Well in Costa Mesa, maybe
so.
You all know it was big
news in 1994 when the Repub-
licans took control of Congress
filter more than 40 years of
being the minority.
But it seems there has been
a quieter and subtler GOP
takeover right here in our own
backyard -on the Orange
County Fair Board.
One Orange County Fair
insider recently noted Uie
board was once made up of
both Democrats and Republi-
cans.
But Republicans now domi-
nate that body, like an ele-
phant dominates the
Serengeti.
And these are no ordinary
Republicans.
Sitting on the fair board are
none other than local party
heavyweights Doy Henley,
Buck Johns and John Crean.
Rest assured those old "lib-
eral" fair policies have been
rooted out by now.
0
BREATiilNG EASIER
In addition to cleaning up
the county's financial mess,
county Supervisor Jim Silva
has another big job.
As a member of the state's
Air Resources Board be will be
charged with keeping the air
we breathe clean.
Silva's appointment to the
board by Gov. Pete Wilson was
approved earlier this month by
the California state Senate.

Marine Safety Officer Gonfun Reed said that
the near.shore appearance of a whale is nothing
unusual. Further down the peninsula, whales
follow the contour of the sand and can some-
times come within 30 feet of the shore, Reed
said.
Beachgoers gathered along the sand as well.
Some watch d the whale while others soon
went back to their lounging.
Melanie Curran ol ·Tust:m was at the beach
with her two children Thursday. She spotted the
whale at a.round 1:15 p.m. and watched as it
appeared to turn in circles.
"Then the boats started zipping in and I won-

Jessica Waltz responded with a
career-high 25 points to lift the
Eagles to a 54-21 victory over
Laguna Beach and into the CIF

"Last year, we had to wait to
see if we would make it into the
playoffs," said Estancia Coach
Russ Davis. "This year we don't
have to wait. We're in."
The Eagles (20-5, 6-4) jumped
out to a 24-13 lead at the half, but
Davis said he "chewed on their
butts" a little dunng the intermis-
sion.
Estancia cam~ out smoking in
the third period and ran off a per-
fect 18-0 run to open a 42-18
lead.
"We've held opponents score-
less for a period in the past, but I
think this was the first time we
did it this year," Davis said. "We
really did a great job."
Waltz keyed the third-period
scoring' attack with 11 points. She
finished the night with 12 steals
and three assists.
"She only had three assists
because she was too busy scor-

It's like old home week for the Pirates
1
• First-year coach Erin Gallagher may be
new on OCC campus, but there are some
familiar faces on her 16-member squad.
COSTA MESA-There are a lot of question marks sur-
rounding this season's version of the Orange Coast Col-
lege softball team, but one nice thing is fans should be
able to tell a lot of the players without a scorecard.
The Pirates' lineup is dotted with several locals who
played high school ball at all four area schools -Costa
Mesa, Estancia, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar.
Fll"St-year Coach Erin Gallagher should be familiar, too.
She was practicing her trade last season at Corona del
Mar. Gallagher also wa.s a two-sport standout at OCC in
track and &0ftball (1978-79). . Last season (11-23, 7-14) was a lean one for the Pirates,
who, in the previous six seasons, had won two Orange
Jmipire Conference titles and made three appearances in
the State Tournament.
, This season's team features 11 freshmen on the 16-team
roster.
"lt W11l take us some time to see which direction this
team is headed," Gallagher said. The Pirates open today
at the double-elimination Cypress Tournament in a 2 p.m.
game against perennial powerhouse Palomar.
Hlf we win, we play Rancho Santiago at 6 p.m." Gal-
lagher said. Rancho is another tough act, having finished
one game out in the 1995 conference title race.
"It's a tough way to open," Gallagher said. "But we
look at it as an opportunity to see where we're at and set
the stage for the season."
Of the incorrung freshmen, in.fielders Jenrufer Long and
Raeme Payne are from Costa Mesa High; infielder Jessica
Romo and pitcher/infielder Raena Yanagisawa are from
Estanoa; and infielder Daruelle Fritz is two years out of
Corona de! Mar.
They JOia Newport Harbor's Sammie Foster, who is one
of four retufning players from last season. Foster hit .203 in
28 games as a freshman and will be the starting leftfield-
er.
The other returnees a.re pitcher Ken Bransom, infielder
Angela Silcox and outfielder Sally Saade.
Bransom, an oCf-speed pitcher, won more than 50% of
the team's games, finishing 6-13 with a 2.92 ERA. The
sophomore right-hander also batted .239. ,
Silcox will start at third base and could play some short-

Long earned the job because of her range and her
speed on the bases.
At second base, Pritz, who was a student at Washington

In fact, Gallagher, coached Tucker, Silcox and freshman

The Pirates were looking for sophomore Molly Sinclau
to provide some punch in the lineup, but she'll be a med-

Buendia. Sinclair batted .315 last season, with a team·high

We had decided to go left after
rounding "Q" mark, while the
rest of the fleet played the right.
After some quick-slipping from
the current, we realized we were
indeed in a very bad position
beneath Bay Island in ve ry little
wind, fighting the current. We
were literally standing still in the
water.
We finally had to reach almost
all the way back to the right and
then slowly make our way to the
finish line.
Luckily, we were having a
grand old time, enjoying the
beautiful weather and being on
the water, but I don't think the
rest of the fleet enjoyed waiting
almost ~O minutes for us to finish.
But that's what competitive
sailing is all a bout. Sometunes
the conditions just take control,
