I n recounting the story, 1t must be remembered that Mr. Plum- mer was in his 80s, I was only 9 years old and am now in my 80s. The story may be inaccurate in detail but the substance lS true. Apparently, Maria Cecelia Plwnmer and her husband lived m San Francisco. He was a sea cap- tain and was gone for much of the time. She and the two boys got.to the middle d the Gulf of Cal- ifornia when a storm came up; the boat sank but they were saved by a steamer on its way to Yuma. They landed in Yuma with a total of 75 cents. Undaunted, Maria Plwnmer opened a restau- rant, made some money and a couple of years later took off for Los Angeles across the desert with her two boys. On arriving in Los Angeles, she opened another restaurant, pros- pered, bought land and became the owner of most of what is now the west side of Los Angeles. "We're looking for a better-shaped field. somewhere where we can utilize our skills,• he said. The Sailors' top scorer, meanwhile, senior Justin Kerr, is still recovering from an ankle inJwy and will probably miss his team's wild-card game on Wednesday. •He's got a big career ahead of tum and I would hate to see something stu· pid happen and take a chance on ruin· ing his career for one game,• Bouette said of the Princeton-bound Kerr, who leads the Sailors with 21 goals and 10 assists, his same goal-total as last sea- son. ·u he's ready to go, we'll give him a shot. But we're confident enough with the rest of the guys that they can FINAL STA NDINGS do the job. "With his college career ahead of him, I don't want to effect his long-term future just for a ring." The Ring, which would come with a CIF Division ID title, has been widely discussed throughout the Newport Harbor camp since the preseason, when the Sailors began to open some eyes with a victory over highly regard- ed Pol.Ultain Valley Dec. 8. They were !1-0-1 to start the season. The Ta.rs finished 4-3-3 in league, but lost only once -to El Toro -in the second half. ·we only lost three games until we got to league,· Bouette said. •0ur league's so tough, that's when we bad some losses. Our league had four teams in the Top 10 at one point.· Newport Harbor, which tied Santa Margarita last Friday, 1-1, without Kerr to secure a playoff spot, will rely heav- ily on Ryan Hoover (seven goals) and Brandon,Brown (six) for offensive pro- duction. Ryan Yurada, Brett Baker, Tobin Junowich, Scott Tac.kaberry and Garrett Jansma are solid in the field, while freshman goalkeeper Zach Wells has been outstanding. GIRLS . . . . . . . . .
