FIGHTING BACK
c osta Mesa resident Patty Gates had happily

Gates, admittedly, had her head in
the clouds after landing what she
called the job of her dreams at Eader
following the departure of fonner prin-

Those dreams were unceremonious-
ly shattered this month when doctors
told Gates the cancer she fought so vig-

her right hip.
The news knocked the wind out of
the sweet-smiling Costa Mesa mother

School officials
want to leave
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -School
district officials are asking that
the Rea Fifth and Sixth Grade
Center's configuration be contin-
ued for another year, officials
said.
At its Tuesday night meeting
the school board will be asked to
approve the extension of the
school's arrangement, even
though it was originally intended
as a one-year stop gap measure
to help handle third-grade class-
size reductions in Newport Mesa.
Some school board members
expressed
concerns
about the
arrangement
because it has
some students
from Pomona
Elementary

ing three dif-
ferent schools
in three Y.ears.

Elementary School fourth-
graders move on to Rea for the
fifth grade but then are sent to
TeWmkle Middle School for the
sixth grade.
In response to a request by the
school board, district officials will
have one sixth-grade classroom
reserved for students from
Pomona who want to stay at Rea
for the sixth grade, as well.
In other business, the school
board will be asked to approve
the retirement of 101 district
teachers and administrators who
are taking advantage of the dis-
trict's retirement incentive pro-
gram.
Among those who are taking
advantage of the district's offer
are the assistant superintendent
of secondary education Tom
Jacobson and the two assistant
principals of Estancia High
School. /'
The board will also be asked
to vote on which campuses will
host summer school classes. High
school programs will likely be
held at Estancia High School and
middle school at Ensign Interme-
diate. Several sites are being
considered for elementary sum-:
mer classes.

WHATI
The Airport Working Group
has Issued a publication, which
has come to be known affection-
ately in pro-airport circles
as "ear muffs."
Sent to residents of
Tustin, Orange and Villa
Park, it targets families
that would be affected by
an expansion of John
Wayne Airport. Claiming
that South County offi-
cials are deviously plan-
ning to double the size of
John Wayne, the flier claims, "U
El Toro Airport is built .:_ your
home will not be impacted by
aircraft noise. If John Wayne is
expanded -Tustin, Or~ge and
Villa Park will be directly in the
flight path."
THE SPIN:
1. South County politicians have
a plan to doubf e the size of Jo hn
Wayne Airport.
Irvine Mayor Chnstina Shea
said the allegation is •absurd."
At a recent Irvine City Council
meeting, Shea said one council
member did, in frustration, men-
tion looking at John Wayne Air-
port but that the council did not
favor the move.
"South County and ETRPA
(El Toro Reuse Planning
Authority) have never talked
about enlarging John Wayne
Airport," Shea said. But Shed
said the airport.does have
capacity for more flights.
But former Newport Beach
Mayor Clarence Turner said Shea
was •a little forgetful• of Irvine's
past involvement with for-
mer county initiatives to
expand John Wayne Air-
port against the wishes of
Newport Beach.
Irvine's growth and
expanding business ven-
tures also indicate that
Irvine will need
increased air transporta-
tion, Turner said.
2. Orange County's economic
future hinges on the construction
of the El Toro Airport.
Turner said that Orange Coun·
ty has two of three•elements nec-
essary for economic growth, edu-
cation and a good job base.
"But what we don't have is air
transportation," Turner said.
•LAX is resisting expanding any
more and if we are to be a solid
independent economic entity we
need to have greater access to air
transportation. El Toro will pro-
vide that.·
But Shea said the county's
economy is and has been grow-
ing without an airport and that
she isn't opposed to having
another airport, just not one at El
Toro.
"We have a 2% Jobless rate
without an international airport, H
she said.
Referring to the county bank-
ruptcy in 1994, Shea said more
effective leadership from the
county would also enhance eco-
nomic growth.
·Another thing about auports
is that they generate a lot of low-
paying jobs,· Shea said. "It's not
a great advantage. H
Shea also said the flight pat-
terns of John Wayne Airport
don't go over Tustin or Orange
unless there are cross wmds and
that there will be greater noise
problems with El Toro's north and
south flight patterns.
"They have a picture of a dog
with the ear muffs,• she said. • U
they have El Toro airport, with it's
north and south flight patterns,
there would be an airplane a
minute, 24 hours a day, talcing off
from there."

•Little League dilemma is no

COSTA MESA -Brandpn Whitley is
an 11-year-old who wants to play base·

wlique one. But the situation that~olds
around Brandon's desire to play ball and
wha t currently keeps him off a Costa

"Uttle League is supposed to be for
kids. (Brandon) has been reduced to tears
and he's very angry because of an erro-

Gleason said
Gleason, whose son is friends with
Brandon's, added. "It was a decision that

Gleason believes that Collier and
boaJd members left their meeting with
Whitley and decided that Brandon should

Collier said that the draft was b81d

Collier's decision was baled on the fact

player. He's been working on pitching,
he•s an ace. He would've been the second
or third person picked."
Whitley adds that being on a waiting
list dooms her son to the Minors for most
of the season, as well.

"There are way too many adults

"This kid lives for baseball and to spend
all winter working and going to weekly
pitching camps and then to say, 'Now
you're on a waiting list,' it's just not right.
All I want is the kid to play.•
Little League standards allow teams of
1,2 to 20 players.
•rm livid that (Collier) couldn't fix

draft three more kids. Instead of making
four kids happy, one is miserable.•
The option has some complications,
though.
"Ow' rule recommends 12 and that's
what lt is,• Collier said. "We'd have to
redo the draft and change it all from the
top down. We just follow the rules.•
Beitbley didn't back the option, either.

GLOBE.TROTTERS, •47 ·-.
They didn't
'win 'em all. .
Tie late Ralph K. Reed,
Newport Harbor Higb'•
athletic director from
1929-1962, etched a unique
mark in the sports history book
one night in 1947 at the htgh
school's basketball gynumsium.
Reed always enjoyed
providing fun entertainment for
harbor area residents in the early
days. There was a movie house
and a ballroom for dancing, but
entertainment was slim unless
one could manage a trip to Los
Angeles or San Diego.
Prior to '47, Reed had a habit
in the 30s and early 40s of
hustling local talent into the gym
for what he called "athletic
carnivals· or"donkey
basketball. H The latter featured
faculty members playmg
basketball while riding
unpredictable donkeys.
Often the local gym was
packed solid with fans, young
and old. There was no TV in
those days, so Reed's show biz
ideas were warmJy accepted.
Being an opportunist, Reed
heard that be had a chance of
booking the world-famous
Harlem Globetrotters one
evening in '47 since the Harlem
outfit had a free night between
San Diego and Los Angeles.
All Reed had to do was call for
volunteers to suit up and relax
for a fun and delightful evening.
The Globetrotters fully expect-
ed the locals m any of the towns
to relax and allow the Harlem
players to run tricky plays and
dance around them in circles
-and win, of course.
Reed knew that. And be
assumed the area volunteers

the national level, however.
don
cantrell
knew that as well and would go
along with any jokes.
Unfortunately, the harbor area
players grew up with hoops and
what they called casabas. And
they were definitely fired up for
a do-or-die contest against the
visitors.
They also wanted to try out
their own trick plays and bounce
the balls through any legs that
were spread.
With little time to draw media
coverage for the event, one was
certain the press coverage would
run slim to none. Still, enough
promotion went out to draw a
packed house.
One old-timer recalled some
of the locals and delivered a
picture of mostly former Harbor
High whiz-bang athletes like the
tall, stout Jim Penny. All-CIF Bud
Attridge, former Tar cagers Jules ·aun1cy· Marshall and Harold
Van de Walker, who once played
with George Yardley, a future
NBA Hall of Farner, and 6-foot-3
Dent Robinson. who fa.red well in
the cage sport and as a defensive
halfback on the '44 Tar football
team.
Make no mistake about it, this
wu a sharp, swift, elusive group.
When the fun went out of Jt
and the 1ocalJ drifted ahead in
the sex>nng', the temperaments
changed on the other side.
Due lo past experience, the
Globetrotters left the tmpre_s$ion
they weren't bothered and that
they could catch up and forge
ahead.
But it never happened.
The locals sped things up and
got numerous fastbreaks going.
The visitors were becoming
intense and displeased over the ·
exchange of trick plays as the
crowd starting cheering the
locals to the end.
With little or no timely news -
releases, it was difficult to grasp
the entire program.
One local later said, "People
didn't even realize that a great
Olympian had travelled with the
Globetrotters to enjoy the show
-Jesse Owens.·
But he was never introduced,
nor did be make an appearance.
The first, long-time owner was .
the late Abe Saperstein and he
built the organization into a great
success. He first named the team
"The Savoy Five,· but changed
it to t,he CWTent name in 1930,
four years later.
History indicates that the
Globetrotters have been on the
road for 72 years, compiled
20,000 games and delighted an
estimated 100 million people in
114 nations.
Looking back, it was
interesting to note that most of
the locals who played were
long-time friends of Yardley in
high school and on Balboa Island
basketball courts.
But it does provide a picture
of the widespread togetherness
that Reed created around the
area during the time.
and women's soccer and basketba.U. as well as soft-

This past fall, the Hawks women's volleyball
team was 6-4 against GSAC teams as they
competed in the Mid West Region of Independents.
The Royals were 0-10 against their future ..
Be~g with the 1998-99 school year,
Christian Heritage and Pacific Christian Colleges
will provisionally join the GSAC officially
transforming it into a 10-mernber conference for
the 1999-2000 year.
Christian Heritage will compete in volleyball,
men's soccer and men's and women's basketball
with plans to add men's tennis and women's soccer in the future.
conference mates.
Christian Herita9e has topped SCC in men's
basketball twice this season, while notching a 4-3
against other conference teams.
PCC has fallen in all three hoop meetings with
Southern Cal -two men's, one women's, and its
men's team is 1-8 against other GSAC foes.
The Royals of PCC will vie in volleyball, men's
Christian Heritage is located in El Cajon, an

A. This is a borderline limit raise for
those who do not play that a jump to
three spades as forcing. Since the
hand is full of losers and the jack of
clubs is a doubtful asset. we rhlnk
dial a bid of cwo spades is sufficienL
But mab me jack of clubs the jack
of diamonds, 1111d now rou would
have enough for an invitational jump
to three spades.
