family t,p court.
When Ornelas, 26, was brought
into a Harbor Municipal cotutroom

misdemeanor drunken driving

the man who stood in the defen·

"It's another reoccurrence in
the life of Danny Ornelas," said
Mary Coleman, Killelea's older
sister. "It just took him eight years
to get caught."
Ornelas was nabbed Monday in
the same city where nearly eight
years ago he struck an4 killed Kil·

what she thinks Ornelas' punish·

ArpbUlance plan off
for now, chief says .
• Fire Department head Tim Riley says opponents of
plan managed to derail it with philosophical discussion .
• By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -A3 far as
city Fire and Marine Chief Tun
Riley sees it, the residents who
don'' like bis proposal to take over
ambulance service •got what they
wanted• during Monday's Public
r-:---:satiety-CCmunit1teemeet:inl .
With their objections, proposal
opponents .sidestepped and side-
' tracked the issue, Riley said.
"They got off the topic Of provid-
ing emergency medical services,·
Riley said Tuesday. "What was dis-
cussed at that meeting was the pri-
vatization of government services
in general. Our proposal had no
opportunity to be discussed.
"There were no questions
posed by (public safety committee)
members. Other than the philo-
sophical que$tion, we really don't
know where our proposal stands."
After more than two years of
study, Riley was prepared to set
the first phase of the plan in
motion before Monday's meeting.
... The ,proposal calls for training
additional firefighters to be para-
medics and having the city take
over services currently being pro-
vided by a private ambulance
company.
Ultimately, all of the oty's fire
you to yoga
stations would be equipped with
a city-operated paramedic Wlit,
under the tenns of the proposal.
The fire chief projects that by
conducting these services ~in
house,• the city will improve its
emergency response times an<l
save general fund revenue.
But during the committee
meeting "MOiiday, council mem-
bers Norma Glover, Dennis
O'Neil and Mayor John Hedges -
who comprise the committee -
did not send Riley's proposal to
the full City Council for final con-
sideration. Instead, the committee
asked for additional review.
City Fire Department employ-
ees are trained in both fire and
paramedic techniques. Hedges
suggested emergency medical
services might be evaluated to
see if the private sector can pro-
vide the services cheaper and
more efficiently.
That could. mean putting the
entire system O\l.t to bid to private
businesses, if that's what the city
council decides.
Riley was scheduled to meet
with Hedges late Tuesday to
determine exactly what direction
to take. The chief estimates that
eliminating emergency services
would save the city $427,000
annually plus additional costs.

However, the d~partment is

Rich Thomas, president of the
Newport Beach Firefighters Asso-

meeting. A licensed paramedic as
well as a firefighter, he believes
the public needs to better under-

providing emergency medical

Proposed Costa Mesa

• Concern mounts over
Thunderbird owner's plan

COSTA MESA -Planning
Com.missioners held off their
decision on whether to allow the
owner of the raucous Thunder-
bird nightclub to open a new
restaurant and bar with entertain-
ment and dancmg at 1670 New-
port Blvd. in Costa Mesa
But the members still heard
from a police official and a
spokeswoman f1'om the state
Alcoholic Beverage Control board
as well as from a resident -all of
whom voiced concerns about the
potential impacts of such an
establishment.
The commissioners had been
scheduled to vote on the matter
Monday night. However, appli-
cant Gregg Mulholland -who
owns the Thunderbird nightclub
in Lido Marina Village in New-
port Beach -asked that the pro-
posal's review be postponed until
Feb. 26.
The alcohol board spokes·
woman warned comnussioners of
past licensing problems at that

mony to come, and

location, wlule a Newport
HeJ.ghts resident told members he
was concerned about noise and
traffic.
Costa Mesa police Lt. Alan
Kent sbo ed comnuss1oners a
map illustrating the number of
other drinking establishments in
the same area, saying police have
had problems with similar busi-
nesses that have operated out of
that location.
"There have been numerous
police reports that have been filed
in that location, and he (also)
believed this facility would create
parking and traffic problems,•
Planning Commissioner Chuck
Robertson said Tuesday
Parking and traffic were two
issues that led to the demise of the
Empire Ballroom, a popular
rughtclub on 17th Street. which
Mullholland helped open before
transferring management to
'1Ulother party and opening up the
Thunderbird in the neighboring
city.
Residents near the Empire
complained hundreds of the
club's patrons parked on their
streets, created distui'banres and
left trash behind.
In his latest proposal, Mulhol-
land has proposed establishing
valet parking at the site -former-
ly home to Lowe, Lo\lle's and
NYC, among other restaurant-bar
operations -m hopes of improv-
mg parking availability. However,
accord.mg to the city's planning
staff, the parking would still come
up short.
Under the proposed parking
plan, valet service would yield 92
spaces. But the city requires at
least 150 valet parking spots to
accommodate the anticipated
occupahcy of about 350.
"There's more testimony to
come, and Mr. Mulholl<)D.d is cer~
tainly entitled to his day to state
his case,• Robertson said Tues-
day. "But numerically speaking,
when you look at the capacity of
the place, the adequacy of the
existing parking facility is certain-
ly questionable.•

with survival.•
Orris said there were doubts
aQ<>ut the Sea Kings' ability to
make the playoffs, after urec.:>a.u1..Cy
Margarita blowout dropped them
to 11-10, 2-4 in league.
"The kids cQuld have gotten
down after the Santa Margarita
game, but they bung in there.
They've worked very hard to get
where they're at and I give them
a lot or credit."
Conversely, Chaminade (13-14
and the No. 4 team from the Mis-
sion League) dropped three of its
last four games to finish below
.500.
The Eagles, coached by Jeff
Young, are led by 6-foot-4 sopho-
more forwa.rd Scott Long, who
averages 15.5 points per game.
Arash Safaei, a 6-3 senior for-
ward, checks in at 11.8 ppg, while
6-3 junior guard Brent Brownson
rounds out the double-figure scor-
ers al 10.2
Torey Ellis, a 5-11 senior
guard, chips in 9.3 ppg and Justin
Stewart, a 6-2 sophomore guard,
completes the starting five at 7 .1.
Chaminade averages nearly 62
points per game, while yielding
just more than 60 to its opponents.
CdM, led by senior forwards
Brian Coleman (17.1 ppg) and
Adam Klinke (12.8), is yielding
51.4 points per contest, while
scoring 50.5.
The-Sea Ktngrhave-niade-a
habit of slowing down playoff
opponents used to a brisker tem-
po, and Orris hopes tonight will
continue that trend.
"It's usually to our advantage
to play against teams that like to
run up and down the floor," Oms
explained. •Because of the type
of defense we play, we're fre-
quently able to slow teams down
and make them do things they're
not used to doing. When we've
struggled, it's been playing
patient teams, like Irvine.•
Irvine, 10 fact, had beaten CdM
six straight and nine of the last 10,
before falling Friday night.
Orris, in his 10th season, is 22-
l:rt CIF-SOulb.ei!lSection playotr·-
competitioo, including 10 wins in
his last 11 games. l'be Sea Kings
have won a pair of section IV-AA
championships the last thtee
years and have two additional
secbon runner-up finishes during
Oms' tenure.
Tonight's winner will advance
to Friday's first-round date at Rio
Hondo League champion La
Canada (22-4)
