• Golf course officials have called
off plans to shoot waterfowl as way
to trim population.

NEWPORT BEACH -The 819 Canyon
COWltry Oub, caught in a controversy stem-
ming from an effort to thin the population of
coot birds on its golf cowse by shooting them,
bai decided to put a halt to coot.shootings -
at~fornow.
D&vld H. Voorb~. the club's general man-
ager, s&d no more coot birds will be shot
under the authority of a cwrent permit issued
by the U.S. Fish and Wtldlife Service, which
allows the club to eliminate up to 225 birds
from Jan. 15 to April 30. '
The club has come under attack by the
People for the Ethical 1featment of Animals,
which condtmins the shootings as ~umane
and points to other methods to solve the per-
ceived bird overpopulation, such as using
dogs to scare tbem off.
Voorhees said the club chose to shoot the
birds only after other methods failed. He wd
the shootings occurred on Feb. 2 and 1 but did•
not say how many birds were killed.
Voorhees said the current contro~ -
and attendant media attention -did not
prompt the club's decision not to shoot any
mote birds.
Jf the club's leadership decides there are
still too many birds on the course this season,
the club will consider methods besides shoot-
ing to get rid of them. he said.
The animal-rights group representative
Jane Garrison, who has seardled the golf
course repeatedly this week for birds she
believes were wounded in the ~s. said
she wants a written promise to that effect.

• Costa Mesa teen Jackie Schart and Saint
Bernard Don Diego are heading off to West-
minster Kennel Club com~tition.
By Tlm Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Local teenager Jackie Seba.rt has
been watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show
on television ever since she was 3.
This weekend, the Balboa resident will step into the
ring at Madison Square Garden for the 122nd version of
the legendary dog show and face tens of thousands of
spectators and a worldwide viewing audience for herself.
"I watched it every year -watched it, taped it and
watched it again," Schart said. "It's something I've want-
ed to do my whole life so I'm extremely excited about it."
Schart, a relative newcomer to the world of competi-
tive dog breeding, is the co-owner and handler of a 2
112-year-old champion smooth coat Saint Bernard
named Don Diego.
A lover of all animals, Schart's varied collection of pets
includes Don Diego, two other show dogs, a toad, tor-
toise, crow, opossum and python.
The senior at the alternative education center at
Monte Vista High School senior is unusual in dog ban·
dling circles for two reasons: her age and her lack of for-
mal training.
At 18, Schart stands out among a generally older
crowd of professional dog handlers who are typically in
their 30s and 40s, she said.
And because she just entered the world of dog han-
dling in August through a couple of breeders she met
while working at the All Creatures Care Cottage, Schart
is without the pedigree some of the other handlers boast.
But that doesn't bother her too much.
"I guess it's kind of scary," Schart said. "Some people
train dogs for 30 years just to get a chance to go to West-
minster. I got to go after six months."
Schart will take just her third plane trip ever to New
York City this Friday and arrive in time for a weekend of
Broadway shows, exclusive dog show parties and other
functions before she and Don Diego take the spotlight on
Monday.
During a nerve-racking two minutes under the micro-
scopic eye of a contest judge, Don Diego will be tnSpect·
ed for his coat, grooming, stride and other details.
Even though her skills as a dog handler aren't judged
in the contest, Schart is responsible for the dog's groom-
ing and behavior in the ring. ·
The first day will pit Seba.rt and Don Diego again.st a
dozen other Saint Bernards in the best of breed competi-
tion.
The winner of that heat will advance to Tuesday's
finals in the working dog class, where Sa.int Bernards
like Don Diego will face other b.reeds for the prestigious
honor of best of show.
Both days of the Westminster Kennel Club show are
scheduled to be aired live on the USA Network.
Schart said she and Don Diego are entering the com-
petition as virtual favorites to Win the best of breed and
advance to the finals.
The dog -a direct descendent of the lovable but
slobbery pooch who starred in the •Beethoven• series of
movies -competed at Westminster under a different
handler last year but didn't mAke it to the finals.
Based on that experience and a long line of recent vic-
tories in smaller dog shows held in Beverly Hills, Costa
Mesa and around the Western United States, Schart
thinks her dog is the one to beat.
"They called him the hot new Saint Bernard from the
West Coast last year and he was just a baby," she said.
"He's a year older now."
This weekend may not be Schart's last trip to the pres-
tigious dog show.

Jackie Schart chllls wtth her champion Don Diego, a smooth-hatred Saint Bernard rated No. 8 In the world
amongst the breed. Schart and Diego wtll travel to New York's Madison Square Garden for the legendary
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this weekend.
She is also the owner and handler of Comrnar.der
Cody, a 2 112-year-old yellow Labrador who has a
promising show career of his own.
And Don Diego recently had a litter of 10 puppies,
one of which -Zorro -is already under Schart's care
and training to follow in his dad's paw steps.
"He looks just like his daddy," Schart said of the
younger champion in training.

Estancia enrollment
dips to new low
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT-MESA -Although
they shied away from discussing a
dosure of the school, decreasing
enrollment at Estanaa High
School is going to require that
drastic measures be taken, school
board members said Tuesday
night.
With an expected decrease of 43
students in the 1998-99 school year,
the school will only be using 46%
of its capacity, lower than any other
secondary school in the district.
"There's the threat of Estancia
going below 1,000 students," said
board President Jim Perryman. "If
it does, it's going to be more and
more expensive to keep that school
operating."
Board member Martha Auor
said low enrollment would affect
the academic programs the school
can offer. A school district study
showed that to break even finan-
cially, high schools must have at
least 1,500 students.
MWe really need to discuss the
ramification of Estanoa," Ferry-
man said. MWe're going to have to
make some hard decisions."
One possible solution would be
to combine Estancia with TeWin-
kle Middle School, Fenyman said.
1Wo years ago, board members
even discussed the possibility of
closing Estancia, but none of the
trustees brought up that possibility
Tuesday night
Board member Serene Stokes
said the district could create a
magnet school at Estancia to
attract more students.
Teacher's union President Llnda
Mook said a school with such low
enrollment could be limited in the
nwnber of challenging upper-level
COW"Ses it could offer students.
M At the low capacity, you just
don't have enough students to pro-
vide for AP (advanced placement]
classes and other classes like
upper-level calculus," Mook said.
The school district is expecting
an enrollment increase of 555 stu-
dents in the district for the next
school year. Of these, 318 will be in
elementary schools and 237 in sec-
ondary grades.
While there's a projected
decrease at Estancia, the school
district may also be facing another
crisis at Ensign lntermedi.ate
School. which is projected to be at
108% capacity for the 1998-99
school year. With 70 new students
expected, the school would have
1, 123 students in September.

Favoring pelformllnce over
hOnesty is nothing new
A s we wait for the next shoe
to drop in Waslnngton,
one question seems to be
puzzling us more Ulan any other.
While more than two-thirds of the
Americans polled -according to
the latest Los Angeles 1imes sur-
vey -approve of the president's
pertonnance, about half say they
don't trust him. How, we ask, can
that be? I
The question scratched a
memory· for me. I recalled anoth-
er president hlld another cam-
paign and another search for
answers -in a different context
but still enlightening today -to
the same question. And I found
the story in my files in a long
series of conversations -taped
and transcribed -I had with
Shirley MacLaine after George
McGovern was smashed by
Richard Nixon in the election
that preceded Watergate.
Probably no presidential can-
di.dates in this century had better
moral credentials than George .
McGovern and Jimmy Carter -
and both were repudiated by the
voters. MacLaine had been an
ardent and active McGovern
supporter, and bis overwhelming
rejection (McGovern won only 17
electoral votes of 537) troubled
her deeply.

much,• she said. "They felt unsafe
with him. They wouldn't trust
their maiden aunt's affairs to him.
That was the overlay. But under-
neath they were scared of him.
And I needed to find out why."
She had spent election night
with George and Eleanor McGov-

em at the family home in South
Dakota. "So much of what he said
in that campaign happened,• she
told me several years later.
"That's why I stuck with him and
thought he would have made a
fine president. He would have set
a moral tone so different from
Watergate. But when he lost so
badly, I was devastated. I rented a
car in Sioux Falls and just started
driving. I washed myself out of
four movies because I bad to find
out why the country had rejected
him tor Richard Nixon in such a
shattering way.· .
She stayed a~ modest motels

alleys in small towns. Movie stars
don't look like movie stars unless
they want to -and she didn't.
"Mostly,• she told me, ·1 would
make mends with someone at the
motel so 1 wouldn't be a woman
alone in a bar. If you don't want to
be piclced up, people accept that.

Richard Nixon was by far the

They knew they couldn't trust

strong and would grind down
anybody who got in his way.
Therefore, he was the guy to be

The Mustangs' bid for a share of their

CORONA DEL MAR -Sealed with a kill.
That's how Newport Harbor High's girls water
polo team clinched the Sea View Leagu~ champi-
onship Tuesday afternoon over arch-rival Corona
del Mar in a 9-3 contest that was never close.
It is doubtful the members of these teams will
be sending the others Valentine's Day cards as
tears and frustration could be seen on the Sea
Kings' side after the ha.rd-fought game. But the
Sailors, who nailed down the league title with a 5·
0 mark, clearly comprised the stronger team.
•Our girls played their hearts out,• CdM
Coach Adam Lee said. •Newport Harbor is just a
good ballclub. •
Ranked fourth irl Orange County, Newport
Harbor (17-6) needed just 46 seconds before Sara
White struck for the game's first goal. She and
senior Alden Moore would add scores before the
quarter was out while the Sailors shut down the
hosts.
But the Sea Kings would fight back in second
period, putting together a solid defensive run.
However, attempts to find the canvas went unful·
filled.

which are nearing another Eagle
three-peat.
Coached by Chns Sorce, the
Estancia 10th graders have run
out to a 16-4 record and stand at
6-1 in league play.
The only PCL loss was at
Laguna Hills, with whom the
Eagles are tied for first, 5 1-48.
On Jan. 30, though, Estancia
got a little revenge with a 46-41
win over the Hawks.
HThat was a little redemption
at our place," Sorce said.
With a solid starting quintet,
Sorce is not just picking up wins
and adding to the successful
foundation of Estancia
basketball, but the third-year
sophomore coach says he is also
building strong characters.
"I tell these guys over and
over, 'You guys are all success
stories.· We have all these
individual success stories that
are cumulating into a league
title.· Sorce said.
Take, for instance, Darshaun
Gamer, one hall of what Sorce
calls his "twm Towers.•
Garner was not planning on
playing hoops this season after
serving as the 10th men on the
freshman team.
"He has exceeded all my
expectations," Sorce said of his
leading rebounder.
Garner went from deep on
the bench to Chairman of the
Boards with 13 rebounds per
game. He is also averaging 11.5
points a contest.
"He takes charge of the
situation when shots go up.
We're not the best shooting
team, either, but he manages to
get to the ball and make things
happen," Sorce said.
The other Tower is 6-foot-4
Mike Reynolds, who pours in
13 points per game.
Then there is Luis Torres, who
was cut from the freshman team
last year.
"He'd hang around the
. summer league and I was like,
'Who is this guy?'" Sorce said.
"I didn't think he'd even play
and now he's my starting
guard.•
'T~>rres shares time with
.1 Maurice Aguilar at the point,
but Aguilar, who averages about
eight points a game, slips over to
the shooting guard role, too.
The squad's leadJng scorer is
Sean Freeman, who at 5-foot-11
is the team's strongest offensive
and defensive threat.
•He's really good on offense
and usually guards the other
team's best offensive player,•
Sorce said.
Freeman tallies 18 points
a game.
Sorce said that his team's
success isn't so much in its
