NEWPORT BEACH -Fletcher Jones
Motor Cars, Inc., has settled a lawsuit with
Newport Beach residents Risa and Bob
Gro~ over an inddent in which a salesman
at the luxury car dealership reportedly
blasted the couple with anti-Semitic state-
ments.
Monetary figures were not disclosed, but
as part of the settlement, Aetcher Jones has
apologized to the Grouxs; disciplined sales-
man rim Good; contributed to two Jewish
nrganizations; and endowed a lecture seties
at the Jewish Community Center in Costa
Mesa. · '
The car deaJer will also send employees
to a sens1tivity tl'aining program, according
to a JOint statement signed by the Grouxs
and Fletcher *Ted• Jones.
ln return, the Grouxs have dropped their
lawswt against the dealership and Goode.
Both sides agreed not to discuss the
details of the settlement with the press,
although the Grouxs on Thursday readily
admitted their ple4Sure .. with the settlement

{action. and we've released all claims,"

together a 30-minute video explaining what
respect is, why it's important and how to
achieve it.

In January, the sixth graders

They've all made the promise to

Monday, Feb. 4 we had ow
"Just Read• Kickoff. Mr. Wood
came to ow school to teach us the
Just Read song. Our goal is to read
60,000 books. We've already read
11.000.
We used some of our PAL funds
to buy air fresheners for our boys'
and girls' bathrooms. They are the
PAL-Council's "sweet smell of suc-
cess.• The bathrooms are much
more popular now.

recognition rate in Newport-Mesa
Unified School District for the
Golden State First Year Algebra
Exam. Awa.rd students and their
families were guests at a break-
fast celebration to honor the stu-
dents.
Algebra was offered at TeWm-
kle in the 1994-95 school year for
the first time in recent yea.rs.
1\venty-six seventh and eighth
grade students were in this class
and they all took the Golden State
exam in May. 1\venty-one of the
students scored high enough to
receive some form of recognition.

knowledge in various areas. It is
intended to be comparable to the
Regents Exam in New York. Stu·

Born in Indiana, Mr. Welli
moved with his family to Balboa
Island in the early 1940s. He grad-
uated from Newport Harbor High
School in 1~; he was on the
school's basketball team.
In 1950, he married Wanda
Hiatt. Their two daughters, Lynn
and Terri, were born in Costa
Mesa.
A lathe worker by trade, Mr;

ing diatribe right after Monahan
argued that he wasn't going to
vote for a 40% increase in the
prl.ce. of building fees.
When Monahan protested that
he was being more of a capitalist
than a s<>dalist ~nis sniffed. that if Monahan woul(j ope[\ up
an "elementary" political science
textbook now and then, he
would know what she was talk-
ing about.
So, I decided to do it for him,
and dusted off some of my old
political science textbooks.
Granted, these were from col-
lege. Couldn't find any "elemen-
tary" political science textbooks
as Sandy had suggested.
But here's now that research
went:
Hmmm. Some interesting
titles here. .
"Democracy for the Few,"
~Modern Political Regimes." OK,
this should do it -"The Social
Basis of Politics."
Flip to Chapter 6. There it is:
"Socialism Old and Left.•
OK, it says organized social-
ism first came to the United
States in the 1870s with the main
theme of redistribution of wealth.
. Yeah. that's what I thought.
By 1932, the book says, social-
ism had one million members,
the large majority of whom were
foreign born.

Basically, they look human.
And since surgery only kept
Marian down a couple of days,
sb,e could have kept the whole
thing quiet and we1)iabably
would have been none the wis-
er.
But instead, she chose to draw
attention to her illness in the
hope that other women will get
tested for the disease and treated
before it is too late.

Beach has a microbrewery, and
before too long, Costa Mesa may
have one, too.
The city's Planning Commis-
• sion this week gave its blessing to
• a 1,900-square-foot expansion
• project that will leave Garduno's
• Italian Restaurant at 298 E. 17th
St. with a 10-barrel microbrewery,
; a second eatery called Skewers
• Brew Pub, and a dining patio for
both restaurants. ·u all goes accord.mg to plan,
we're looking at June for an
operung, • said owner Mark Gar-
duno. •Tue eqwpment is already
being manufactured in Europe.
They do one (brewing) system a
week, and it's all totally hand-
crafted.•
Garduno said he· wants to
develop •a whole new concept"
for the new restaurant and pub,
while keeping the existing Old
World-theme restaurant the
same,
Then there's the beer. Garduno
plans to make about 20 different
ones. He said he'll probably fea-
ture four beers a week.

broiler, and we'll have skewered

where from 10 skewered items up
to maybe 20, and they're going to
be served on a bed of wild rice.
"We're still developing · the
menu, but we have a definite idea
about what we want to do.•
The decor of the new restau-
rant will be bri51ht and colorful,
Garduno said, with hand-painted
tables and plates that he hopes
will be designed by long-time
Garduno's customers.
"We'll be sending out letters to
quite a few of our customers, and
we'll have a plate-painting day,•
Garduno said. "They'll all come
m, and everybody's going to be
given a few plates. They'll actual-
ly hand paint the plates and sign
them on the back, and then we'll
have them fired. And those will
be the plates we use at Skewers
Brew Pub.

that her organization, dedicated

would take action.
"We plan to picket and let
people who want to go in there
know that this is not something
the community is in favor of,•
O'Neil said. "Our group is dedi-
cated to fighting this."
And Monique Nelson, execu-
tive director of the anti-porn
Enough is Enough campaign,
said that her group now "has a
fight on its hands."
"I can't believe this," she
