Peninsula t-shirt store ,
faces a new protest
• Residents· say Pun N Sun's gannents have crude slo-
gans and images. They plan to picket store Saturday,
as they did in October. •
By Christopher Goffard, Daily Ptlot
BALBOA PENINSULA -
Come Valentine's Day, the
theme outside Fun N Sun will be
indignity 'n' outrage.
The Balboa Peninsula store is
under fire again tor displaying T·
shirts that local residents and
activists consider offansive.
Delores Cantarella and Joyce
' Barnes, who picketed the store
last October, have organized
another protest th.Js Saturday
under the banner •stop the
Hatred."
Among the T-shirts hanging
in the Fun N Sun display win-
dow, one features a phallic car-
toon, another displays a jutting
middle finger, and a host of oth-
ers show depictions of marijuana
leaves.
Still other shirts, activists say,
are anti-gay.
•1t brings a negative (image!
to our area down here,• said Gay
Wassail-Kelly, vice president of
the Balboa MerchanUOwner
Association, who noted she sup-
ports the protest.
·senior citizens a.re the ones
who are just devastated,• she
said. •Tuey see one or two nice
T-shirts. and they start reading,
and then they come to (obscene
words] and they're embar-
rassed.•
The store's manager, Richard
Tulsiani, did not return calls from
the· Daily Pilot by Thursday
rught. In October, he described
himself as a businessman and
said, "Whatever sells, I sell."
.. "I'm fine with him selling
what he wants to sell, but I don't
think it's appropriate to have it
exposed to children," said Britta
Pulli~. who runs Britta's Cafe
on Main Street, down the block
lrom Fun N Sun.
Pulliam described the shirts as
"rude, crude and disgusting.•
•1 have a 6-year-old [daugh-
ter)," she said. ·1 don't walk by
his store with her because she's
starting to read."

Mustangs captured their third straight title.
Sherwood's squad had an easy go with
Laguna Beach, which recorded its only win
this season over Orangewood Academy.
Mesa jumped out to a 7-0 lead as junior
Uanne Sasaki hit a pair of free throws.
By the e nd of the first quarter, the visitors
had extended to a 12-2 advantage as Kim
Nguyen canned a three-pointer with 48 sec-
onds remaining.
Having beaten the Artists by 52 pomts in
the first round of league play, Sherwood com-
posed her starting lineup of usual non-starters
and evenly distributed playing time to all of
her players.
"This is a game where w e try to get every-

to score," the second-year head coach said.
That mission was accomplished as each

board.
In the second period, the hosts closed with-

turnovers and foul trouble to send the Mus-.
tangs to the free-throw line 14 times. ·
Mesa would connect on 10 of those.
Costa Mesa went into the halftime int~
mission with a 12-point lead and would
extend it from there.
Carolina Garcia, a 5-foot-5 senior guard
who sees limited action, paced the Mustangs
with nine rebounds.
"She deseIVes that and all the credit for her
bard work during the season," Sherwood said.
Evelyn Powers added nine points for Mesa,
and Jenny Earnest chipped in with eight.

After a 17% shooting night Tuesday and a

Newport Harbor looks
ahead to next season with
everyone returning.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Piiot
IRVINE -Wait unW next sea-

High's girls basketball team can
say and really mean it.
After Thursday night's Sea
View League and season finale
against host Irvine, a 64-43 victo-
ry for the playoff-bound Vaque·
ros, it's all the Sailors prefer to
talk about.
"Obviously we're going to be
a better team next yeaJ," sa.id
Newport Harbor Coach Ryan
Bettencourt, whose squad (8 -18,
3-7 m league) is scheduled to
return every player for the 1998-
99 campaign.
To cap this season, lrvine (16-
8, 7-3) put the lid on the Sailors
W1th its height advantage. name·
ly the inside punch of 6-foot-3
Lauren O'Hara, 6-1 Jody Carlson
and 6·foot Jami Allred, all of
whom scored in double figures
while combining for 20 rebounds,
or two more boards than Newport
Harbor's entire team.
"It was nice to get a win oo
Tuesday (against Woodbridge~.
~but I wish we would've played
better tonight," Bettencourt said .
The. Tars. led by junior Krist~h
Urban (12 points), sophomore
Kalena Jackson (12) and junior
Alys$& Paul (11), missed their first
six shots in the third quarter to
open the floodgates for Irvin~
which led only 26· 20 at the break
because of Paul's three-pointers.
lrvtne built a 40-23 lead in the
third, its largest of the game, then
poured it on in the fourth as
O'Hara (19 points, 11 rebounds)
took over.
Junior April Ross finished with
eight points, seven rebounds,
three steals, two blocks and one
assist for the 'Ill.rs.
Emily Glassic had five
rebounds for the Tars coming ott
the bench, while Molly Weed.n
and Melissa Hollister also con-
tributed. But the Sailors were
forced to play with only seven
because freshman Lisa Hunting-
ton was asked to play JV for a
