Corona del Mar is the

Sy Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
• COSTA MESA -While guid-
ing Corona del Mar High to the
CIP Southern Section title game
Jour of the previous seven sea-
~ms, Coach Paul Orris said his
~ams have almost always had to
knock off an opponent that
looked stronger "on paper" than
the Sea Kings.
• A similar challenge awaits
tonight at Estancia High, where
CdM ( 17 -10) hosts San Dimas (26-
1) in a CIP Southern Section Divi-
sion ill-A boys basketball quarter-
final clash, tipping off at 7:30.
•Every time we've made it to
the finals, it seems like we've had
to beat a team that was tougher
than the one we played for the
championship,• said Orris, whose
squad appears to have followed
another recent CdM trend by
peaking in the postseason.
"I like our chances, because
we've really made progress the
last six games (all wins). We've
been getting better and better,
although I'm not sure what the
reason is."
San Dimas,
the No. 2 seed
and champion
of the Valle
ViSta League,
is on a 10-
game winning
streak, after
South Hills,
.r-:!:::,f.Hlr-U_,,..:.&..-f ell
overtime to
Coleman Estancia in
Friday's first
round, ended the Saints' 16-
game skein with a 65-58 triumph.
San Dimas Coach Gary Preste-
sater, who has 301 career victo-
ries, has a guard-driven offense,
keyed by seniors Corey Smith
and Oian Chavez.
Smith, a 6-foot-3 sharpshooter,
averages 18 points per game and
has drained 60 three balls thus far.
The 5-11 Chavez, who oper-
ates the point, averages 17 points
per contest and bas connected 50
times from threedom.
"They shoot threes really
well," said Orris, whose team
adjusted to shut off La Canada's
first-half three-point ba.rr4ge (6 of
10) after intermission (0 for 7).
San Dimas, which owns tour-
nament victories over Moreno
Valley (top-seeded in ll-AA) and
Nogales (the No. 2 seed in I-A), is
also fueled by 6-6 senior center
Jason Powers (10 points and 10
rebounds per game) and 6-3
junior forward Ryan Smith.
•corey Smith is a fine ath-
lete,• said Orris, who will hope to
unleash his trademark defense
on a Saint squad averaging about
15 points per game, including
nine games of more than 80.
Cd.M, led by frontcourt seniors
Brian Coleman (17.1 ppg), Adam
Klinke (12.9 ppg) and Darren
MacDonald (8.8 ppg) has held
opponents to an average of 51.3,
with only two opponents netting
more than 62 (Wood.bridge's 82
and Santa Margarita's 12).
•When the playoffs come, at
any level, the teams that play
bard defensively are usually the
ones that step foIWard, • Orris
said. •we hope we can continue
to do that.•
Estancla's Dane Plock shares Padftc Coast League boys basketball Player of Year honor with Laguna Hills' Mike Sc~gllone.
PLOCK· SHARES NO. 1 IN PCL
Estancia seni0r joins Laguna Hills' Scaglione for top
honors; two other Eagles, pair of Mustangs honored.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily ,;Jot
E stancia High point guard Dane Plock, the constant in
the Eagles' run to a second straight PacUic Coast
League Crown, shares Player of the Year honors on
the Daily Pilot's All-Pacific Coast League boys
basketball team.
Plock, a 6.-foot-1 senior bound for Cal State Fullerton, averaged
17 .3 points in 10 league games, mixing dangerous three-point
accuracy with the ability to break down defenses with penetration.
Plock's 77 regular-season three-pointers led all Orange County
bombers, but his contribution didn't stop on offense. Plock
frequently utilized his lightning quickness to pick opposing guards
off the dribble, or flash from the perimeter into the paint to
eliminate passing lanes.
"He not only. plays real well himseli, but he sets up his
teammates well," said Estancia Coach Tun Parsel. named Coach
of the Year.
Sharing the Pilot's top PCL individual honor for a second
straight season is Laguna Hills senior guard Milce Scaglione, who
led all scorers with a 22-pqint PCL average.
Scaglione, who exploded for 41 points in one league game, was
Co-Player of the Year as a junior with Estanaa's Zack Richardson.
Also reflecting Estancia's supremacy, is the inclusion of seniors
Chris Candlish and Nick Novak on the first team, while Costa
Mesa was represented on the second team by senior guards Josh
Weeks a:nd Mike Montoya.

Keep Clear
One boat keeps clear of another
when the other boat can sail her course
with no need to take avotdlng action.
Comments: This important concept
is not in the CUITent rules, but is implied
by IYRU ~ t 13. A boat required to
keep clear must not pass so close to the
right-of-way boat that the crew of that
boat believes they need to take
avoiding action.
Leeward And Windward
A boat's leeward side is the side
which, 'she is, or when head to wind,
was carrying her ~sail. The other

one on the leeward side of the other is

Vanguards fall, 1-0
COSTA MESA -A ninth-inning error helped
visiting Albertson College (Idaho) break a score-
less tie and claim a 1-0 nonconference baseball
verdict Monday from Southern California College.
An infield single plated Ted Keister, who
opened the ninth with a single, advanced to sec-
ond on an error, was sacrificed to third, and scored
on an infield. single to drop the Vanguards to 2-8.
Ryan Holman threw six scoreless innings for sec, despite yielding eight walks and three hits,
while Kevin Doyle, Rick Homutoff and Sean Levitt
accounted for the winner's three hits.
~bertson improved to 2-1.
