D>ANg•.
Tbe dty is considering cancel-
ing or nwtstng the JeUe to make it
the new home for recieetion pro-
grams the dty offers at the Uncoln
School gymnasiwn. The city pays
$16,200 a year to lease the Uncoln
gym from the Newport-Mesa
school district, and that rent will
double in four years.
•1be main reason we got into
this is the P91Slbillty that in the
future we may lose our agreement
with the school district,• Murphy
said, adding that the school district
could cancel the lease with six
months notice. •ne Uncoln
School site is a major part of our
recreation program, and if we
were to lose that we'd be scram-
bling for indoor facilities to keep
those programs going. That
prompted us to think -before we
renew the lease al Eastbluff -
what options we have.• ·
According to a staff report writ-
ten by Community Services Direc-
tor LaDorµia Kienitz for the City
Council's Harbor, Beaches and
Parks subcommittee, the city's
options are to:
-Renew the Eastbluff lease
with new terms -including possi-
ble rent increases from the cwrent
$1 annual rate to $16,200 per year
through June 2002 and $32,400
each year thereafter; requirements
that 'the club take over upkeep of
the building; and provisions for a
$ix-month or one-year lease can-
cellation.
-Take over the facility and run
some city recreation programs,
using both the gymnasium and
meeting room. .
-Thke over the 6uilding and
provide the Boys and Girls Oub an
option of using the building for
specific youth programs such as
youth basketball and summer day
ca.mp.
-Take over the building, can-
cel the lease at Uncoln School and
move all dty recreation programs
into the Eastbluff facility.
The subcommittee is scheduled
to discuss the issue again Wednes-
day. Kienitz recommended the
council give direction for which
option should be pursued, but not-

Balboa Beach Co. is being restored to its origi, nal appearance
By Marissa Espino, Daily p;Jot

day Dl¥ine garage and most
recently the popular Balboa Beach Co.
outlet, is being restored to its 1920s
appearance.
It's also being twned into a modest
Balboa Island version of a mall with
possibly four shops und~ one roof.
•1 think that since it's being restored
to its historic look that it will bring a
new and improved ambiance to Balboa
lsland, • said Jim Roberts, the owner of
the Balboa Beach Co. and a 27-year
tenant of the historic building.
The building was one of the first
buildings on Balboa Island.
DemolitioJl for the restoration project
began during the first week of January.
In addition to such things as adding
handicapped bathrooms, the buildings
dropped celling will be removed in
favor of the original high-beam ceiling.
The building is expected to be open by
spring.
"It will be a building restoration so
that it will look similar as it did in the
20's, ·said Roberts "It will have an
open, airy feeling and it will be bright.·
Before being vacated, the 4,200-
square-fool building was leased to
Robertlt as the headquarters from his
Balboa Beach Co. chain. Previously, it
was lsland Hardware and Sporting
Goods.
Bruce Cahl, the real estate agent for
the property, said the buildil)g will be
evenly divided into four stores unless
there is a tenant who will lease a 2, 100-

child's fingers are all joined together into
what looks a paddle rather than a hand.
But with the magic of plastic and

helped to a better life thanks to the volun-
teer efforts of Newport Beach plastic sur-
geon Dr. Michael W. Niccole and his staff
at CostmetiCare Pla.slic Surgery Special-

Having donated hundreds of thousands
ot dollars in equipment and services to the
poor in Mexico, Niccole's team, which
works under the auspices of the Magic
Mirror Foundation, will be venturing into
Southeast Asia to bold a health clinic in
Vietnam this summer.
"I've had many patients who are Viet-
namese," Niccole said. "Most o! them are
from Little Saigon."
With a nudge from some of those
patients, Niccole, 50, investigated the
prospect of holding the clinic in Vielr!am

"Vietnam has a pretty sophisticated
health care system," Niccole said. "They
are very brilliant and heavily influeQced
by the French.•
In addition to treating what will likely
be scores of patients, Magic Mirror volun-

counterparts in the latest techniques in
plastic and reconstructive surgery as has
been done in Mexico.
Niccole started the nonprofit foundation
Magic Mirror ln 1987 after visiting Mexico
with World Health Volunteers and seeing
the magnitude of the needs.
In addition to their hu.ma.nJtarian efforts
abroad, Magic Mirror also extends its ser-
vices to some in Southern California who
can't afford plastic surgery.
Niccole is also the medical director of
CostmetiCare, which until sue months ago
was located in South Coast Plaza.

surgeons, Dr. Hootan Danesh.mand calls
the high point of the year.
"It takes you one hour to make a
change that will last a lifetime," Danesh-
mand said. "Not many people can do
that."
Daneshman started going on trips with
Niccole as a helper when he was just 19
years old. Now 34 and certified, he still
goes as often as he can.
"I made a vow to mysell to go back
every time I can," he said. "It's the best
two weeks of my year."
Many patients in Mexico sometimes
attempt to bring some form of payment to
express their gratitude.
"Some people bring a squash, a
pineapple or a guava," Niccole said. "We
don't do this for monetary p urposes. We
know we may never see these people
again but when you see the tear in some
of their eyes, it's all worth it."

·SPEAKING
The drag coefficient is a meas-
urement of the ease with which a
vehicle slips through the air. The
lower the number. the easier 11
moves through the air, the better
the fuel economy will be. The
drag coefficient .32 for instance,
indicates the drag is 32 percent of
the drag on a rectangular box of
similar dimensions. Today, car
manufacturers are turning to
aircraft-type wind tunnels in order
to fin e-tune the aerodynamic
details of their vehicles. Each I 0
percent gain in drag reduction is
wonh a 2 percent gain in fuel
economy. While engineering a
new engine for a gain in fuel
economy can run into the tens of
millions of dollars, a simple bend
m the sheet metal can yield the
same results for very little cost.
HINT: Driving on a gravel road
can reduce fuel efficiency by 35
percent as compared with
driving on a smooth surface.
INJECTING THOUGHTS
The electronic fuel injection sys-
tems found in many of today's cars
are a vast improvement over those
of a decade ago. Computer capabil-
ity and reliability have dramatically
improved. Although they require a
lot of electronic circuitry, fuel injec-
tion systems are mechanically less
complicated than carburetors. In the
long run, they require less service.
The most important -advantage of
fuel injection is improved drivabil-
ity. A modem, fuel-injected engine
should idle smoothly, respond with-
out hesitation, and maintain a
mooth cruising speed, regardless of
engine load and temperature.
Because fuel injection systems are
more accurale than carburetors, less
fuel is wasted. In addition, many
systems today are equipped with a
diagnostic function. At C & F (2090

• Huge Ayala (20-6), bi-champ of
the Sierra League, staitC;is between
Newport Harbor High and its first
playoff win since '92 Friday night.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
CERRITOS -Newport Harbor High
boys basketball coach Larry Hirst said he
knew little about Ayala High, the Sailors'
first-round road opponent Friday in the CIF
Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs.
But be knew enough to wince when the
matchup was revealed Sunday at Gahr
High.
"I know it's a big school," said Hirst,
whose Sailors (18-8) boast the fourth-small-
est three-year enrollment (1,377) in the 33-
team I-AA draw, which Harbor volun-
teered to compete in, rather than it's II-AA
enrollment designation.
Ayala (20-6 and tri-champions of the
Sierta League) has a three-year enrollment
of 2,518, bettered by only three schools in
the I-AA draw.
Hirst, who said he has played or scrim-
maged Ayala in summer competition at
least once in the last two years, also
recalled the Chino Hills-based Bulldogs
usually have height.
Ayala, indeed, has three 6-foot-7 play-
ers. two of whom start. But firsthand
reports indicate the Bulldogs' front line
relies more upon finesse than power, which
should match up well with Newport's 6-7

junior center Adam Hearlson.
"We've played against size this year,"
said Hirst, who in his third year at the Har-
bor helm is one win away from equalling
the third-most single-season victories in
the program's 68-season varsity history.
"Actually, the teams that have bothered
us the most have been ones with strong
guards."
Ayala's starting backcowt, including 5-
11 sophomore three-point threat Chasen
Jones and &-0 senior Jay Espinoza, average
16 points combined, which figures to help
make the Sailors' task of posting their first
playoff win since 1992 more attainable.
Hirst didn't have to delve too deeply into
his network of coaching pals to come up
with a videotape of Ayala in action.
"I've already talked to (El Toro Coach
and fellow Southern California College
alumnus Todd Dixon) about getting their
tape," Hirst said of the Chargers' 62-56
December nonleague victory over Ayala.
The El Toro clash and a 69-51 tourna-
ment win over Rancho Alamitos are Ayala's
only games against Orange County com-
petition. The Bulldogs also lost to league
rivals Diamond Bar (55:53 Friday night)
and Rowland, as well as Glendora (seeded
No. 1 in Division 1-A), Catherdral City and
California High.
Harbor, which tied El Toro for second in
the Sea View League, has won four straight
and seven of its last eight, including a 50-
47 upset over previously unbeaten Santa
Margarita, ranked No. 1 in Orange County
at the time.
The Tars, led by junior guard Matt
Jameson (13.7 points per game) and a bal-

Division III-A championship,

By Barry Faulkner; Daily Pilot
CERRlTOS -Failure by the
Estancia High boys basketball team
to secure the program's fourth
straight Pacific Coast League crown
had a devastating effect on the play-
ers, according 10 second-year head
coach Rich Boyce.
But Boyce is eager to point out to
his Eagles that the onJy Estancia
team to claim a CIF Southern Section
championship ( 1990), was also
denied the PCL top spot.
"Which would you rather win,
league or CIF?" Boyce asked rhetori-
cally, after learning Sunday at Gahr
High the Eagles (17-9) would meet
Bassett (16-7) in Friday's first round at
7:30 p.m. at the Olympians' gym in
La Puente. "It's the playoffs, now, and
I expect us to play hard and perform
well."
Estancia, which lost four of its last
seven league contests, will get four
days of practice to shake off the
shock of finishing third behind PCL
rivals Laguna Hills and University.
"The kids were devastated after
Friday's (80-72 loss to Univetsity,
which the Eagles entered one game
behind eventual champion Laguna
Hills),• Boyce said. "We'd gotten
used to that winning feeling and our
kids had come to believe the league
was theirs. Now, we'll have to have
short memories."
The Eagles, entering their 11th
straight postseason, have lost only
two first-round contests during that
span, the most recent in 1994 to even-
tual section champion and state final-
ist Pacifica.
Bassett, which lost its final two
Montview League games to finish
tied with Gladstone for second place,
doesn't figure to be as imposing as

the aforementioned Mariners. How-
ever, Boyce, who guides the lone
Orange County team in the 16-team
ill-A draw, admitted to having no
immediate information on the
Olympians Sunday.
"We'll have to fiOO something on
them," Boyce said of Bassett, which
dropped a 77-59 decision to Brea
Olinda in December in its only game
against an Orange County opponent.
Bassett, which eliminated Corona
del Mar in the IV-AA semifinals in
1994, is paced by prolific 6-foot-2
junior guard Steven Albitre. The
coach's son (Guy Albitre, like Boyce,
is a walk-on head coach) averages 28
points per game, includi.cig back-to-
back outputs of 56 and 51 (Feb. 4 and
Feb. 6).
Estancia, paced by senior Air
Force Academy-bound senior Sam
Nelson (23.7 points per-contest), bas
only one loss to a team not in the
playoffs. And that def eat, (lJl overtime
setback to Lynwood in December,
was made possible only when an offi-
cial waived off a would-be game-
winning three-pointer that appeared
to beat the regulation buzzer.

Bucs MAY PlAY A GAME OF MUSICAL CHAIRS, FOR A WHILE
'·
• Coast hopes to tum it around from last
season's less·than-sterling 12-30 record.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Ptlot .
'lbere really isn't anything quite like it ... the scent
of freshly mowed grass mixed with that odor that .seems to be associated only with baseball -a fra-
9fant mix of the earth, the sunshine and the leather
of gloves.
For Orange Coast CoUege, last season smelled of
disaster, though. for Coach John Altobelli and bis
Pirates, who mustered up just 12 wins in 4 2 attempts
to mark the first 30-loss season in the 49-year histo-
ry of OCC baseball.
But Altobelli is looking forward, keeping his nose
·in the right direction as he scopes the trail toward a
;eversal of fortune and, despite a rain-plagued pre-

season thus far, have registered three wins in four
games.
"I think if we get healthy and the guys come
through, with the pitching and offense we have,
there is no reason we can't be in the playoffs this
year,• said Altobelli, who won bis lOOth g~ at
Coast in the season opener against Antelope Valley.
· It seems to be a bold statement from the coach of
team that finished in the basement of the Orange
Empire Conference last spring with a 4-20 mark and
whose squad was picked to finish sixth of seven con-
ference teams this spring. But a strong recruiting
class should bring more run production and should
make last spring's 7 .35 team ERA but a bad memo-
ry.
Overcoming a series of preseason injuries will be
Altobelli's first obstacle.
"It's going to be like musical chairs around here
for a while,• he said.
The Bucs lost projected cleanup lutter and first
baseman Ryan Clark. a freshman out of Fountain
Valley High. when he chose to undergo shoulder
1
surgery after trying to play through the m1ury 1
"We were really counting on Ryan's bat .. and he
was our best first basemap. Now we've got to fill a
couple voids offensively and defensively," Altobelli
said.
Chad Gonzalez, also out of Fountain Valley, will
move to first base.
In the win over Antelope Valley, Gonzalez
showed that his bat should be feared, as well, as he
blasted a two-run homer in the 10-3 victory.
After hitting .325 last season, John Lukin, a
UCLA throwback out or Santa Margarita H.tgh. will
start behind the plate and call the pitches for ace
Ryan Evans, a sophomore out of Huntington Beach
High, sophomore left-hander Jim Sipkovich (Mari-
na), returner Josh CdSe dnd Jon Fenog\10, who was
originally slated to pitch at Long Beach State ·
Altobelli also has tugh hopes for t-1.ike Stevenson1
a high school teammate of the Cleveland Indians'.
Jared Wright at Katella
Stevenson, drafted t'Wlce by the San Francisco
Giants, was 1-1 with an ERA of 3 14 lil 10 games m
1996 with the Bucs
"We've got a young team, but we've got expen-.
ence m key spots We've got d pfetty good recrwtmg
class. and the guys who are conung back will step
up,• Altobelli said
Riverside will be the team to beat in the OEC.
while defend.mg state chcUnp1on Cypr~ss and Santa
Ana have split six of the last seven stale titles and
are right behmd the Tigers
t's going to be the same old Orange Empue Con-
ference," Altobelli said "Just another day at the
park. '

Whal do you btd now?
A. Agam, two bids have promise -
a jump to three hea.ns and a cue-bid
of two spades. Sometimes partner
will have only three hearts for a take-
out double, so even a hean paltSCOIC
could prove unmanageable. We pre·
fer the cue-bid, which opens the pos·
sibihly of reaching a minor-suit
game. The problem comes on the
next round should partner bid three
hearts.
