el toro debate
I am along in my 70s now and a lifelong
resident of .Orange County. I used to be
like those who oppose El Toro and wanted
everything to stay a.s it was. No way is that
possible. Growth is going to continue and

El Toro offers Orange County .
the chance of a lifetime
Orange County keeps growing; John
Wayne will be totally used before 2010,
which means we must start preparing .El
Toro now to take up the load of commer-
cial flight.
The Navy bas given us the rights to El
Toro, and we need to get started.
Our people must realize that this is a
chance in a lifetime to continue the
improvement ol economic life in Orange
County. More and more high-grade indus-
Ules are moving here and El Toro will sup-
port them. _,
Some voices are raised against the air-
port. There is a movement to block El Toro
from becoming commerci.a.J. These anti-
airport ideas originate from a few rich real
estate people who want to make millions
by putting up zillions of houses that create
a crowded, Smoggy atmosphere of unbe-
lievable congestion.
Orange County is too crowded now!
Let's keep the wide open spaces of El Toro

Is Don Saltarelli going to
earn his salary?
If Don Saltarelli isn't going to do any-
thing to try ·lo stop Irvine's annexation of
El Toro Marine base, just what is he going
to do for his $15,000-per-month salary? It
is interesting that all we know about his

what is not in it.

Irvine Mayor Christin4 Shea threatened

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE
-This school's celebrated
gremlins may find a permanent
home on campus.
School officials are searching
for a place to hang two 9-by-U3-
s collle back to OCC
foot canvas murals titled • ActiV1-
lles of the Gremlins," now on dis-
play in the OCC Art Gallery but
set to return to storage when the
show ends this Friday.
The murals, painted in 1943
when the college was the Santa
Ana Anny Afr Base, feature a host
of grinning gremlins in a tableau
depicting life on the base in the
1940s.
OCC spokesman Jim Carnett
said college officials will speak to
the Costa Mesa Historical Society,
which stored the murals in a vault
for 17 years, about plans for a per-
manent on-campus home.
"They've been very gracious
m giving them to us for display,"
Carnett said. "We've talked to
them informally about leaving
them ttere on campus permanent-
ly, and they've been very positive
about it."
One of the problems in hang-
ing the murals is finding wall
space where they can fit side by
side. A possible site is the cam-
pus' new Library, which 1s
expected lo open its doors m
about five years as the biggest
building on campus, Carnett
said.
"They've created quite a stir
in our exhibit," Carnett said,
adding the muraJs will be on dis-
play again at a reunion for the
Santa Ana Army Air Base m
April. "There seems to be some
momentum bwldmg for keeping
them here because this 1s the site
of their creation "

Heres a Muk that
rose above the rest
T oday, when the reader o1
A local newspaper sees
. the word Muk. be or she
thinks the copy editor dropped
the ball on the spelling of the
word muck. Not so 30 years
ago. In those days the wore\
MU.le meant Muk not muck.
You see, Muk was the nick-
name of one of the better
known and more colorful peo-
ple in the history of this town.
MU.le is, of course, Don
McCallum. a local boy who
made good in a big way
because Muk: and bis partners,
lawyer Hugh Kelly and stock-
broker Jay Carlyle, had a
dream and made the dream
come true.
I have known Muk Since
birth. His mother and my older
sister were good friends, and
we always seemed to live next
door to the McCallums. Since I
am about 20 years older than
Mu.le I remember him only as a
skinny little kid who grew into
a skinny big kid, but along the
way M~ acquired a personali-
ty by which wherever he goes
he is front row center. Not that
he tries. He is not pushy, just
commanding. To use an appro-
priate word, Muk has presence.
About 30 years or so ago.
Muk, Hugh and Jay had a
dream. That dream was to buy
and operate a vanilla plantation
in Tahiti I remember because I
wrote a letter of reference for
them to the government of
French Polynesia.
The boys finally acquired
enough money to buy the
vanilla plantation, bul when
they got to Tahiti they had a
change of plans. They decided
to go into the hotel business
instead. They acquired some
property on the island of
Moorea just a few miles off
the main island of Tahiti. and
built a hotel. When I say built,
I mean it literally. They built it
by hand, every stick of lum-
ber, every nail. That hotel
became the Bali Hai, flagship
for a whole string of hotels the
boys built on various islands in
French Polynesia. Along the
way, they made the front page
of Tune magazine, an honor
few have experienced.
They were innovative. For
example, one hotel bad no
beach, so they built bamboo
shacks out on the end of ram-
shackle piers. The hotel guests
could look through the fioor of

their rooms and see the fish in
the ocean. Incidentally, I saw an
article ma travel magazine
recently about some similar
rooms on piers on the island of
Bora Bora.
The thing that caught my
eye was that those rooms rent-
ed for $700 a night. I doubt that
first one cost that much a night.
It probably didn't cost the boys
$700 to build the whole pier
and all the shacks on it.
The original hotel on
Moorea is still there, one of the
premier hotels in the South
Pacific. When l was in Ameri-

Well, the boys bought and
sold hotels until they accumu-
lated enough money to b\1% a
stretch of beach on the Sea of
Cortez, roughly in the neigh-
borhood of the Bay of Los .
Angeles. John Koll and Jon·
Curci were in on the deal. and r
wouldn't be at all surprised if a
resort would spring up there
that will push the rest o1 Baja
California off the map. •
While I haven't seen any of
the three partners for several
years I gather that Hugh and Jay
are running the Tahiti operations
while Mule for some reason is
growing tomatoes in Mulege.
Why Mulege? Why toma-
toes? l haven't the foggiest idea.
Come to think Qf it. I never did
know how Don McCallum
acquired the mckname of Muk.
I guess 111 have to ask him the

NEWPORT BEACH -A fire prompt·
ed an evacuation of a hotel in the 4500
block of MacArthur Boulevard on Mon·
day morning and drew about 50 fire·
fighters from five different agencies, but
no one was reported hurt in the blaze,
authorities said.
A crowd of guests, cooks and other
workers were evacuated around 11 a.m.
and stood waitmg for about 20 minutes in
front of The Sutton Place Hotel while
firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
The fire started in a third-floor laundry
room, then spread through parts of the
ventilation system and the roof, said

Blauer said dryer equipment in the
laundry room apJ?arently started the fire,
which did $10,000 worth of damage to
the building and $15,000 to its contents.
But how it happened exactly remains
under investigation.
Blauer said firefighters from the Costa
Mesa, Newport Beach, Huntington
Beach, Santa Ana and Orange County
departments -17 companies' worth in
all-had the fire contained by 11:30 a.m.
•1t didn't spread to the actual (quest]

could have been a much bigger fire."
Among those evacuated were dozens
of employees of Vireo Manufacturing
Corp. who came from around the country
to attend a weeklong conference.
Ralph E. Tumey, a sales manager, said
he didn't mind stepping outside for a

Silva ·expected today to
announce re-election bid
By llm Grenda, Daily Pilot
First-teon. Orange County
Supervisor Jim Silva today will
formally announce bis candidacy
for four more years in Santa Ana,
officials said.
Silva, whose 2nd District
includes Costa Mesa, will enter
the race for the June 9 election
during a morning press confer·
ence held inside a governmental
studies classroom at Marina High
School in Huntington Beach.
Silva was returning home from
a weekend vacation in Mexico on
Monday and was unavailable for
comment, officials said.
A f<>l'Dler Huntington Beach
City Council member, Silva earned
his supervisor seat in November
1994 by beating fellow Huntington
Beach Councilwoman Linda Moul·
ton-Patterson in a bitterly fought
race filled with plenty of mud·
slinging by both
sides.
Silva, a con-
servative '-rho

tion into a com-
mercial airport
after the mill·
tary leaves in Jlm Silva
1999, was
recently eleCted chamnan of the
board by his fellow supervisors.
The designation made Silvd
the first supervisor who was not in
office during the county bank-
ruptcy to lead the county board.
Silva's main competition for d
second term so rar is former Cos-
ta Mesa Mayor Sandy Genis, who
has yet to fonnally announce he1
candidacy but has since October
actively campaigned around
town for a run against Silva.

The Mustangs, who shared the PCL

their ninth straight postseason appearance,
have been eliminated the last two seasons
in the first round by Nordoff and Rosary,

were released Monday at Gahr High, could
give Mesa the impetus to get past the Sky-

You weren't there at all those summer

You weren't swimming laps or treading

lying on the couch.
But that's OK, because you didn't feel

more guard Precious Craddock ,
as well as phonetically kindred
first names Keisha, Doneisha and
Kamesha.
If I may, however, section
admuustrators should take their
tweaking tools to the blatantly
inadequate boys and girls soccer ,
format. which provides JUSl four
boys divisions and three girls
divisions for the entire secilon
Albertson downs sec, 5-1
·•Vanguards fall to 2-4.
COSTA ~1ESA -Three South-
ern Ca.Womia College relievers
pitched well, but the damage had
already been done against sec
starter J oshua Steele as V1S1ting
Rivera had two rut~ each tor the
Vangudrds. while SCC's Enc
Boothe had an RBI double in the
fourth
Daruel VilldJTeal. Odnd Ross
and l\1ichde l Grasse combmed tor
five sohd mnmg !:> out of the
bullpen for sec
Though the Monarchs' 23-5
record and No 3 seeding m the
ID-A girls draw would tend to
discourage opposing coaches
from wanting to place the names
with the faces, Costa Mesa's
Shontel Sherwood and her Mus-
tangs will likely be afforded this.
opportunity in the second round.
0
The Southern Section's
decision to house the boys and
girls basketball pairings at the
Gahr High gym, adjacent to the
section office, should be loudly
a pplauded (consider tlus a stand-
mg ovation).
Rather than "sardining"
scores of coaches and media
members into th~ cozy confines
I
lf, as happened this season
with Division Ill in boys and
girls, a division becomes unpact-
ed with automatic qualifiers
{teams who fl.rushed in the top
three of SLX -lea.m leagues or the
top four of seven-team arcwts).
deserving at-large candidates
are unilate rally shut out
The Newport Harbor boys
tied fo r tlurd in the rugged Sea
View League, including D1V1s1on
I qualifier El Toro, Divisipn D
entry Woodbndge and defending
Division III champion Santa Mar-
garita.
Yet Codch Ziad Kboury's
Sailors (7-5-2. including victones
over Woodbridge and Santa
Marganta) never got the chance
to en1oy the e nrollment-based
format the playoffs provide.
because there was no room for
al-large additions.
