Teacher Dave Bree's eco-
nomics students are becoming
corporate executives. The
means for such a metamorpho-
sis is the purchasing and run-
ning of "mines."
The recently completed
mine project was made up of
simple props. Mines were plas-
tic boxes· filled with various
beans, all holding a different
value. Some mines were secret-
ly salted to make things inter-
esting.
Each two-person team start-
ed with $20,000. Teams hod to
bid for the mines. Once pur-
chased, the mines were worked
and refined. Profits bought
equipment, hoppen, loaders,
shovels and scoops, allof. which
looked o lot like Styrofoam cups
and plastic utensils. Teams took
out loans to expand into new
mines and pay bills. They filed
environmental impact reports
when beans spilled, and paid
fines for contaminating the soil.
The students completed
annual reports for their busi-
nesses with pie charts, spread
sheets, bar graphs and written
reports, which really gave a
window into the personalities
behind the "companies."
There were many profit lev-
els and new experiences in this
project. All students involved
gained far more than their bot-
tom-line profit margin would
reveal. All in all it looks like a
great investment in aoss-cur-
rlculum education. ·

The Toyota was driven by a 26-

The Orange County Fair & Exposition Center was recently

the site. At least two hotels received room business by housing

ENV IRONMENTAL
EXC ELLENCE
Congratulations to NIKETOWN which in February was
presented the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce's
Environmental Award.
Mario Vega spearheads the NIKETOWN recycling program
and works very closely with NIKE's Environmental Action
Team. Like many environmentally conscious businesses,
NIKETOWN recycles white paper, newspaper, cardboard,
plastic, plastic hangers and cans; utilizes stationary, bags,
boxes and brochures made of recycled products; and boasts
of a car pool program in which more than 50% of the
employees either car pool, walk or bicycle to works.
NIKETOWN is serious enough to build these programs into the
new hire training program.
In accordance with NIKE'S motto, "Just Do It,"
NIKETOWN'S environmental program demonstrates that same
demand for superior performance. NIKETOWN promotes
recycling of old NIKE shoes, which are ground up and the
rubber reused to make new athletic surfaces -basketball and
tennis courts, running tracks, playground mats, etc.
P.LA. Y. (Participate in the Lives of America's Youth) is NIKE's
corporate initiative to create more sports and fitness
opportunities for kids. Through P. L.A. Y., sport surf aces and
playgrounds made of recycled NIKE shoes are being donated
to communities. The Reuse-A·Shoe (tm) Program is part· of
NIKES's overall environmental effort to find common ground
between business mid the environment.
For questions about NIKETOWN's environmental programs,
Mario Vega can be mached at 714/642·6~.

Costa Mesa High School is looking for businesses that
would like to become partners in helping to prepare students
for careers. There are several ways to serve as a Business
Partner. One is by providing problem solving ~orkshops. This
would involve 8·20 students per.session depending on how
many you could accommodate. Students would be put in
teams of 4 or 5 and your company would be asked to provide
sessions for 2 to 4 teams. Sessions would last 1.5 to 2 hours
after schoof. From 3 pm to 5 pm would be most convenient.
Students would meet at the business site, be presented
with a problem and asked to solve it as a team. The problem
presented should be one that the company is presently
having or has experienced. e5{Mnples would include a
problem in training personnel, one relating to manufacturing,
customer relations or cost cutting. The students may provide
another way of looking at the problem that you have not
considered. This has happenedl

I feel that the district should def-

don't think we need more housing

about what they've been doing.
Basically ... it's appalling.
I thJnk the biggest problem )(as
been that the citizenry of Costa

long time, and I'm not sure they
remember how to do it. But I lh1nk
you're going to find a really inter·

There are phone lines ringing
like crazy in the Costa Mesa High
School community, making sure
that every parent knows exactly
what's going on -that the property

I think the school district has an
obligation to this community to lis-
ten to the options in an open forum.
I think they would be much better
served listening to all of those opin-
ions and allowing th~ublic t9 h~ an of the opinions. --
So that reg4rdl s of the dedslon
that IS made, everyone has heard all
of the different opinions.
I think you're going to see some
real problems, as you intimated In
your article l think the school board
has reverted back to the John Nicoll
era. I think it's depl(>rable.

You just don't liquidate capital
assets to reunbwse operating bud-

maintenance items allowed to be
deferred so long to reach this StS

sell other properties down the line
someplace to take care of other
deferred items?
I think money wouldn't be qwte
so short if the dlstnct had not bor-
rowed money to UlVest in the coun-

that and why nobody's ever taken

COSTA MESA -The slipper will tit only one today, either Newport
Harbor High or visiting Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley, when the
two Cinderella teams in the ClF Southern Section Division ID boys soc-
cer playoffs square off at 3 p.m. at Kaiser Elementary School in the
quarterfinals. Kaiser is located at the comer of Santa Ana and 21st.
"It's getting exciting,· Newport Harbor Coach Colin Bouette said.
"We're the only ones left in the playoffs around here.•

have knocked off league champions Estancia
(Pacific Coast) and El Toro (Sea View).
"I would assume we've got everyone's
attention down there,· said Canyon Springs
Coach Sharon Walsh, whose defensive-minded
squad has recorded 11 shutouts, including two
m the playoffs.
Canyon Springs, wh.ich uses a fundamental
4-4-2 game plan, features a balanced offense.
Only junior center/midfielder Chad Reckard
(14 goals) has more than seven goals.
Newport Harbor, with senior striker Justin
Kerr (school single-season record 25 goals, as
well as 11 assists Uus season) hobbled with a
left ankle injury (ligament damage), nipped
Laguna Hills, 2-1, in a wild card game Feb. 14,
as Kerr scored a pair of second-half goals.
Last Fnday, the Sailors edged second-seeded
Santiago, 2-1, in overtune, as Kerr banged in two penalty kick goals.
Against Riverside Poly, freshman goalkeeper Zach Wells stopped a
penalty kick with some 30 seconds remaining to preserve the Tars'
win, scoring their only goal on a re bound shot by Garrett Jansma.
·Garrett JUSt slotted it home,· Bouette said. "But, of course, our
goalkeeper was unbelievable. It was one of the best performances I've
seen, espeoally tor a freshman. We think he'S" a sophomore now; he
lost that freshman status. He's worked real hard to get that (starting)
position·
Today's game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but inclement
weather throughout the week forced a day's postponement. The field
at Newport Harbor is almost beyond recognition because ot the recent
rains, compounded by the overall poor conditions, hence, the change
in location to the elementary school.
"For us to come away with a win (at Riverside Poly), it shows what
we're all about,· Bouette said. "Good teams need to show it when the
chips are down. We didn't play one of our better games, but we man-
aged to do it when we needed to. Sooner or later, you need to steal a
game.
"I bear (the Cougars) are a good team, and they're provihg to every-
one they're for real. We won't take them lightly, because thetre the
top team now for us. But they're also just in our way. TiiiS was our goal
at the beginning of the season, to win en; so it'~exciting. Not too many
people get a chance to obtain their goal, and ~t's m.Aldng it tun for the
guys. We control our own destiny now, especially with a home game."
Seniors Jeremy Ellis, Ryan Hoover and Ryan Yurada, juniors Scott
Tackabeny and Tobin Junowich, and sophomore Brett Baker have also
contributed greatly to Newport Harbor's postseason run.
· Canyon Springs, which has only two seniors on its team, is also led
by midfielders Eric Simmons (seven goals) and Nick Zavala (six).
Junior Brian Hatch is the goalkeeper.
