Brown stated that Waldorf has "a number of concerns• with the Parsons site and went on to list the size of Parsons (too small) and the terms of the lease as their primacy concerns. She also stated that their concerns "have nothing to do with the neigh- borhood" in which Parsons is located. At a Jan. 20 meeting of Waldorl and I COMMUNITY COMMENTARY Newport youth should be served Newport-Mesa representatives, Waldorf attorney Russ 1Yler said the Parsons site was unsatisfactory for several reasons. He said that Parsons is too far from freeways, too small, not aesthetically pleasing and located in an undesirable neighborhood. He listed Waldorf's sped.fie needs as: 1. A location near the intersection of the San ntE ISSUE: Many don't believe that the city should kick the Eastbluff Boys and Girls Club out of its current location. I 've been a volunteer coach at Costa Mesa's Lou Yantorn branch of the local Boys and Girls Club for about 10 years. At the age of 49 now, I've played in adult sports for more years than I care to remember. To me, there's no question at all: You do not close, relocate or change anything about the Boys and Girls Clu b, period. , In this age of single and divorced parents, more kids and families depend on this dub for after-school care, activities and sports. For many of these kids, this can be their highlight of their days and the learning process of growing up. . I can only speak for the high school I am clos- est to and that's Newport Harbor. Take a look at the school's teams, half of the boys soccer team, half of the boys basketball team, half of the boys volleyball team, numerous players on the girls basketball and volleyball teams, football team, boys and girls tra~k teams and two mem- bers of the Harbor Dance Team, they all have one thing in common: They all went to the Boys and Girls Club in their younger years. I coached almost all of them. I can't speak for the students at Corona del Mar, but I'm guessing that many of their upbringings began at the Eastbluff branch that led them to their activities in high school and beyond. Your editorial was great. tt said it all as far as I'm concerned. Leave it alone. Let the older adutts find their past in other ways and other activities. leave the kids alone and don't let the city government take It over. They haven't volun- teered any hours or donations of money like I have and others have. There's no question. Just leave it alone. RALPHROWNS Costa Mesa 1 am highly opposed to us giving over the lease of the Newport Beach Boys and Girls Club to adult community recreation. I think this is absurd. You know, it's amazing how Newport Beach and the city and'Oonald Bren and The Irvine Co. can find all this land to build all these houses and everything else. How about building an adult community cen- ter for adults and children 1 Why take away from the youth? We've had this dub for 25 years. Both my sons have played basketball there. They've gone to summer camp there. They go there after school. The younger one still uses the facilities we have supported through the years through fund-raisers. I am absolutely, highly upset that the city would even think of dofng this. And on top of that, my son also attends Lincoln School and the adults shouldn't even be using the basketball court at Lincoln sdlool. My sons don't even have a place to go on the weekends when it's raining except to go and use these courts to play on. The schools should be ~ to the kids. not the adults. It is the city's IWpOlllibility to provide a place for the adults to have their recreation. We have plenty of fand and we seem to have plenty of land to sell to developers to build - houses, shopping centers and evef}'thing else. . 'Nhat about talt.lng care of the adult community and building M aduft recreation. center for eveiybody end children? Monterey has • beautiful adult and children facility that we used for a minor fee and it's fab- ulous. We have a lot of money In this communi- ty. We cannot do something like this. I hope we can band together people in Newport-Corona del Mar to support bringing back another lease for the dub. CATHY KROOPf Corona del Mar I'm very positive on w.,ting to continue the 80)'5 and Girls Oub. Both of our sons .spent .:very single afternoon at the Boys Oub. I really hope you keep it. JEAN ROSSO Newport Beach I've lived In Newport Beach for 24 years and raised two children through the system here, both of whom W«e active In the Boys and Girls Club, and I can tell you from personal experi- ence I think it's an outstandlng program. I think it's extremely 'useful and I'd be d is- tressed to see if they would be set aside by hav- ing some of the facilities and activities at Lincoln School come down and superimpose themselves on top of it or In ~ace of it. Please don't do that. Keep the dub going. -I think it's a tremendous as.set to all the young people In the Newport Beach.Corona del Mar area. GORDON BENHARD Newport Beach Diego, Costa Mesa and Corona del Mar freeways. 2. Eight to 1 O acres. 3. Oassroom space to grow to 300 students. 4. 1\vo hatd cowts and three apparatus areas. 5. Ad~ate parking. 6. A five-to seven-year lease. 1Yler then listed Balearic, Lindbergh. Mesa Verde and Monte Vista as sites that would be more suitable to their needs. We reiterated that Parsons is the only site avail- able and reminded Waldorf officials that, although Parsons houses a significant aspect of Newport- Mesa's Special Education Program, we are willing to relocate those students to provide space for a short-term lease to Waldorl. While acknowledging that Parsons is not as freeway accessible as other sites, we pointed out that Parsons would provide more usable square footage (19,810) than Waldorf has at Eastbluff (16,626) and that Parsons is a 10-acre site. It remains unclear to Newport-Mesa why Wal- dorf would have any concerns about the Parsons neighborhood. Parsons is an aesthetically pleasing site located on the bluff behind Estancia High School. It is easi- ly accessible, in excellent condition and would pro- vide Waldorf with a sense of "their own campus." For Waldorf to expect Newport-Mesa to provide a 10-acre site near the freeways for a five-to sev- en-year lease is unrealistic. Class-size reduction and annual growth have forced us to open several schools recently and we may need to open other closed sites in the future. . Our offer of Parsons recognizes that Waldorf officials need a short-term solution to provide them the time to locate a long-term site. Our offer is sin- cere and generous. • ED DECKER lrit N'f!wport-Mesa Unified School District board member . ., ... .,. ... ._ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .. ~ \ write your representatives WEATHER PRESIDENT Bill Clinton, (O), The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave , Washington, D.C. 20500. It wasn't. He and his horse were stuck in quick- sand. He yelled at his troops to save him, but they let him go down even though he promised them all the gold coin he was carrying. Since his favorite way of punishing his troops was by staking them out on ant hills to be eaten alive, I can understand ' Local man suspected or attempted rape A Costa Mesa man was airest- ed Saturday after allegedly attempting to assault a woman in her home in the 2900 block of Andros Street, police said. Authorities suspect Juan Sanchez Rodriguez, 26, walked into the home. of a 30-year-old woman around 12:50 p.m., say- ing he was looking for woik, said police Lt. Ron Smith. The WOJIUIJl, who was in the house with her 8-year-old daughter, told the man she was not looking to hire anyone, Smith said. As he was about to leave the house, Rodriguez allegedly turned and grabbed why they weren't too enthusiastic about saving him. My first personal experience with quick.sand was when I was a small boy living with my par- ents in Maywood on the ban.ks of the Los Angeles River. This was before the stream bed of that riv- er was paved. ln its original state, after a flood, there were patches of quicksand in the river bed For- tunately, this qwclcsand was invariably only hip deep. Jt was fun to get in it, struggle to get out and finally be pulled out by yoar buddies. Our favorite sadistic little boy tnck was to entice some unwary youngster into quicksand and leave him there blubbering • the woman by the shoulders, Smith said. The woman screamed and bit him on the band as he tried to cover her mouth, and the man fled, Smith said. Police soon spotted Rodriguez walking down Pla- centia Avenue near Oriole Drive and took him into custody after a brief struggle. Smith said. Rodriguez was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, burglary, resisting arrest and being under the influence of drugs, Smith said. He was being held Monday in the city jail on $50,000 bail and is expected to appear for arraignment today in Harbor Municipal Court. -By Christopher Goffard 1/Uf(#{/i~ AVILA CHI CKE SOUP Fresh chicken broth, chunks of chicken breasr, rice garnished with avocado, cilantro and lime. For- tunately, we were standing right next to each other. By hugging each other and turning, we could swing our bodies and gain a few inches toward the hard mud. For the record Anyone watclung us must have had some question as to our sex· ual onentatioo as we hugged ourselwes out of the quicksand. More recently, my old friend Bill Lester was hunting ducks on the Colorado River, found himself in quicksand and would still be there lf he hadn't happened to have lus shotgun to use as a kind of crutch to get out. Still it took bun a couple of lonesome hours to free hunself I've sworn off quicksand. The next time it may be over my head, and I don't want to go down with my upraised fl.st clenching and unclenching. • ROBERT GARDNER is a r~t1red judge and a resident of Corona del Mar His column runs Tu~ays • The Feb. 19 Best Buys and Music Review columns gave incorrect information regarding the Grog Shop and sooal functlons at the Balboa Bay C ub.
