NBWPORT BEACH -The days of
: Gilbert, a homeless white-and-gray
speckled cat, may be nwnbered.
. Newport Beach resident Tabitha
· Djananpour regularly fed the transient
StMNtte mix she dubbed, Gilbert, for
three months before it disappeared on
Friday the 13th.
Djananpour and a neighbor were try-
ing to find a home for the young feline .
By the time she finally found someone
who would take him home, Gilbert had
been missing for two days. He came
back seven days later with a pellet in bis
back.side and an evident back in~
•1 thought maybe he went loo for
love, but when be showed up, we
noticed he wasn't himself and was sick.•
said Djananpour, who could not keep
Gilbert herself because her cat does not
get along with other animals.
"Some cruel person yanked bis tail so
hard that they dislocated his tail," she
said. •1 was devastated. Who would do
something like that to a cat?•
Gilbert has been in the treatment
room, under antibiotics for his injuries, at
the Dover Shores Pet Care Center in
Newport Beach since Monday. But what
Gilbert really needs is to be looked at by
a specialist, closely examined and most
likely operated on -all at a cost that can
lead up to thousands of dollars.
Without any care, and if Gilbert does-
n't have an owner by Friday, he will be
put to sleep.

the area Monday, caused a mudslide on Inspiration Point
off Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar.

Conc~ms over swap meet
·expansion under discussion
• Community meeting
serves as forum for plans
to make weekend event
more attractive to
shopping.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR-
GROUNDS -A handful of fair-
grounds neighbors gave a ten-
tative thwnbs up on Tuesday to
a proposed expansion of the
swap meet held here each
weekend.
A community meeting spon-
sored by swap meet organizer
Tel Phil Enterprises was held at
the fairgrounds to hear commu-
nity input, criticisms and ques-
tions about plahs to add five
new attractions to the event.
Organizers of the swap mee t,
known as the Orange County
Market Place and now in its
29th year on the fairgrounds,
have proposed expanding in
hopes of breathing new life into
the once-popular open-air mar-
ket that attracts just h alf the 3
million p eople a year it did inits
heyday.
The proposed expansion
woutl add a classic car muse-
um called •The Automotive
Field of Dreams," an adjacent
vendors area offering car-relat-
e d me rchandise, a covered
farmers marke t, an area similar
to a small factory outlet center
where local manufacturers
would sell directly to the public
and a Thursday evening street
fair with up to 200 specialty
vendors.
Some swap mee t vendors
and cit y officials have
expressed concerns about how
the plan s would affect them.
On Tuesday night, it was the
neighborhood's turn.

if it impacts the tract I live in,"

vowed resident Roy Andreen .
He and others were mostly
concerned that the Thursday
nig ht street fair could be
extended into other nights if it
proves popular.
But Tel-Phil official Jeff
Teller said that would be like
Hhaving a party every night of
the week " and would make the
once-a-week street fair less of a
special event.
Planning Commissione r Lin-
da Dixon criticized Tel Phil offi-
cials for n l:>t providing enough
details in a handful of recent
meetings outlining the expan-
sion plans.
"It seems lilce you still don't
have a ny real solid plans,•
Dixon said. "When will we
have concrete answers as to
what you are really going to
do?•
The fair board is set to for-
mally consider the Tel Phil
exp~nsion plans in the next few
weeks, officials said.
The car mµseum, featuring
classic automobiles in sets
depicting the erci in which they
were popular, would be housed
in a fairgrounds building . The
auto-related booths would be
set up outside .
The manufacturers outlet
area would be set up along Fair
Drive and the Thursday
evening street fair and farmers
market would take place in the
center of the fair parking lot in
be tween the two concessions
stands, officials said.
Some current and former
swap meet vendors have angri-
ly claimed the exp ansion -
most notably the p lanned man-
ufacturers area -would hurt
their s mall businesses by
underc utting their prices. •
On Monday night, about 60
vendors attended a meeting
discussing the expansion plans.
But since strict rules allowed
only current sellers with photo
identification cards insid e,
some of the most ou tspoken
exp ansion critics -former sell-
ers who claim they stopped
sell ing at the swap meet
because they were harassed by .
Tel Phil officials -said they
stayed away.

T oday is the last time •Lis-

a bsolutely, positively, irrevocably
the last time I will be writing on
this subject.
But there has to be closure.
What I threw out, partly as whim
and at considerable risk, some
weeks ago evoked such a wide.
creative and surprising response '
that it can't simply be diddled
indefinitely. It has to be resolved.
Almost 100 suggested titles
came in by mail, p hone and
word-of-mouth. And because
one of my minor character
defects is indeas1veness, I've
avoided making a choice. l can't
avoid it any longer. So fin ally,
this week, I sorted through the
entries, weighed, evaluated, and
came up with seven finalists -
at which time this burst of dea-
sion-making wavered once
again. {
Here are the final.Jsts I chose:
• Bell on Wry, my own person-

shot down inexplicably by my
wife but remstated by several
letter writers;
• Wryme and Wreason, a d eli-
cious play on words that is both

• The Flip Side, also appropn-

• The Bell Curve, with e nough

• Bell Ringers, from John Rus-

school superintendent John ·
Nicoll;
• Use only my name without a
colwnn header, from several let-
ter writers;
•And, finally, don 't do any-
thing. Just leave it be.
The last two suggestions came
from people who were impatient

ConCerns over swap meet
·expansion ~der discussion
• Community meeting
serves as forum for plans
)P make weekend event
more attractive to
shopping.
• By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR-
GROUNDS -A handful of fair-
grounds neighbors gave a ten-
tative thumbs up on Tuesday to
a proposed expansion of the
swap meet held here each
weekend.
A community meeting spon-
sored by swap meet organizer
Tel Phil Enterprises was held at
the fairgrounds to hear commu-
nity input, criticisms and ques-
tions about plans to add five
new attractions to the event.
Organizers of the swap meet,
known as the Orange County
Market Place and now in its
29th year on the fairgrounds,
have proposed expanding in
hopes of breathing new life into
the once-popular open-air mar-
ket that attracts just halt t)le 3
million people a year it did in its
heyday.
The proposed expansion
would add a classic car muse-
um called "The Automotive
Field of Dreams," an adjacent
vendors area offering car-relat-
ed merchandise, a covered
tanners market, an area similar
to -a small factory outlet center
where local manufacturers
would sell directly to the public
and a Thursday evening street
fair with up to 200 specialty
vel).dors.
Some swap meet vendors
and city officials have
expressed concerns about hoV?
the plans would affect them.
On Tuesday night, it was the
neighborhood's tum.

Shoppers make their way through ailes at the swap meel
vowed resident Roy Andreen.
He and others were mostly
concerned that the Thursday
night street fair could be
extended into other nights if it
proves popular.
But Tel Phil official ,Jeff
Telle.-said that would be like
"having a party every night of
the week" and would make the
once-a-week street fair less of a
special evenL
Planning Commissioner Lin-
da Dixon criticized Tel Phil offi-
cials for not providing enough
details in a handful of recent
meetings outlining the expan-
sion plans.
"It seems like you still don't
have any real solid plans,•
Dixon said. "When will we
have concrete answers as to
what you are really going to
dor
The fair board is set to for-
mally consider the Tel Phil
expSlnsion plans in the next few
weeks, officials said.
. The car museum, fel\turing
classic automobiles in sets
depicting the era in which they
were popular. would be housed
in a fairgrounds building. The
auto-related booths wouid be
set up outside.
The manufacturers outlet
area would be set up along Fair
Drive and the Thursday
evening street fair and farmers
market would take place in the
center of the fair parking lot in
between the two concessions
stands, officials said.
Some current and former
swap meet vendors have angri-
ly claimed the expansion -
most notably the planned man-
ufacturers area -would hurt
their small businesses by
undercutting their prices.
On Monday night, about 60
vendors attended a meeting
discussing the expansion plans.
But since strict rules allowed
only current sellers with photo
identification cards inside,
some o( the most outspoken
expansion critics -former sell-
ers who claim they stopped
selling at the swap meet
because they were harassed by
Tel Phil· officials -said they
stayed away.

Columnist throws a -. curve in the name game ,
T oday is the last time "Lis-
ten Up" will appear at the
top of t1us column. It is also
absolutely, positively, irrevocably
the last time I will be wnbng on
this subject.
But there has to be closure.
What I threw out, partly as whim
and at considerable risk, some
weeks ago evoked such a wide,
creative and surprising response
that it can't.simply be diddled
indefinitely. It has to be resolved.
Almost 100 sugges~ed titles
came in by mail, phone and
word-of-mouth. And because
one of my minor character
defects is indecisiveness. I've
avoided maJang a choice. I can't
avoid it any longer. So finally,
this week, I sorted through the
entries, weighed, evaluated, and
came up with seven finalists -
at which time this burst of deci-
sion-making wavered once
again.
Here are the finalists 1 chose:
• Bell on Wry, my own person-
al choice from the beginning,
shot down inexplicably by my
wife but reinstated by several
letter writers;
• Wryme and Wreason, a deli-
cious play on words that is both
appropriate and -I hope -
wreasonably accurate, from Pas-
tor Bill Kirlin-Hackett at the
Newport Harbor Lutheran
Church and School;
• The Flip Side, also appropri-
ate, from Jack Caldwell;
• The Bell Curve, with enough
double-entendres to cover almost
every occasion, from Jane Run-
ner;
• Bell Ringers, from John Rus-
sell and former Newport-Mesa
school superintendent John
Nicoll;
• Use only my name without a
column header, from several let-
ter WTiters;
• And, finally, don't do any-
thing. Just leave it be.
The last two suggestions came
from people who were impatient
with this whole process. oddly
LISTEN UP Curve • If I can convmce the

fer put it: "I've never really I

don't think that It's anytlung to 1

OK. l agree. Tune lo move on.
But having pamted myself mlo
this comer, what do I do with the
seven finalists listed above to
close out this matter?
Well, the first thing I do is vac-
illate. Then I vacillate some
more. In some despair, I look at
my ditsy dachshund, Coco, who
is eyeing me speculatively from a
chair she isn't supposed to be on
And I have a bnlliant idea Smee
I can't make a firm decision, l'l.1

one by one That got her atten-
bon, but Coco's span 1s bnef So I
turned her loose. and she investi-
gated the paper balls w1th a k.md
of perfunctory interest.
Then, praise be, she picked
one up and ran with it A choice
had been made
By the time I caught up with
her, the paper was pretty-well
shredded, but still legible. The
name Coco chose, and which I
embrace heartily, is "The Bell
HThe Bell Curve" appeals to
me l1l so many oitical places .
First, of course, is the baseball
conJtotatlon. Second. the book
beanng that name came to some
rather dubious conclusions, thus
offenng the unplmt lesson that
we shouldn't accept anything
without running It through our
own cnllcd.1-tlunkmg system.
And, finally. there's the affinity of
the curve to the gray areas of life
m wtuch I hve more and more
w1th each passing year.
The fastball comes straight
down the rruddle, without guile
or subtlety or cnnkled edges,
depend.mg mostly on brute
strength and pretty much ignor-
mg dny human factor. The curve,
by contrast, dances and darts
and dips and doodles, taking
cogruzance of WUld, weather,
mo1stwe, and playing off all sorts
of nuances. Although the goal of
both pitches 1s the same. the
curve -by not talo.ng itself so
senously -tS far less convinced
of its own omrusoence.
Havtng thus over-analyzed
"The Bell Curve." I will get back
to business as usual next week.
Thank you all lor going along
with Uus odd lltUe exercise.
Meanwtule. I'm toying with a
notion to try out before my
daughter and go to the horse
races when they return to Holly-
wood Park
I'm qomg to roll up the names
of the horses m the first race in

them out for Coco to make a

Concerns over ~ap meet
t expansion under discussion
• Community m eeti.Jig

to make weekend event

By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR-
GROUNDS -A bandlul of fair·
grounds neighbors gave a ten-
tative thumbs up on Tuesday to
a proposed expansion of the
swap meet held bere each
weekend.
A community meeting spon-
sored by swap meet organizer
Tel Phil Enterprises was held at
the fairgrounds to hear commu-
nity input, cribc:isms and ques-
tions about plans to add five
new attractions to the event.
Organizers of the swap meet,
' known as the Orange County
Market Place and now in its
29th year on the fairgrounds,
have proposed expanding in
hopes of breathing new life into
the once-popular open-air mar-
ket that attracts just half the 3
million people a year it did in its
heyday.
The proposed expansion
would add a classic car muse-
um called "The-Automotive
Pield of Dreams..• an adjacent
vendors area offering car-relat-
ed merchandise, a covered
farmers market, an area si.rtlilar
to a small factory outlet center
where local manufacturers
would sell directly to the public
and a Thursday evening street
fair with up to 200 specialty
vendors.
Some swap meet vendors
and city officials have
expressed concerns about how
the plans would affect them.
On Tuesday night, it was the
neighborhood's tum.
"I will scream to high heaven
if it impacts the tract I live in,•
FU PHOTO/OAllV PILOT
Shoppers make the ir way through alles at the swap meeL
vowed resident Roy Andreen.
He and others were mostly
concerned that the Thursday
night street lair could be
extended into other nights if it
proves popular.
But Tel Phil official Jeff
Teller said that would be like
•having a party every night of
the week• and would make the
once-a-week street fair less of a
special event.
Planning Commissioner Lin-
da Dixon criticized Tel Phil offi-
cials for not providing enough
de.tails in a handful of recent
meetings outlining the expan-
sion plans.
•1t seems like you still don't
have any real solid plans,"
Dixon said. "When will we
have concrete answers as to
what you are really going to
do?"
The falT board is set to for-
mally -consider the Tel Phil
expansion plans in the next few
weeks, officials said.
The car museum, featuring
classic automobiles in sets
depicting the era in which they
were popular, would be housed
in a fairgrounds bwldmg. The
auto-related booths would be
set up outside.
The manufacturers outlet
area would be set up along Fair
Drive and the Thursday
evening street fair and fdflllers
market would take place in the
center of the fair parking lot in
between the two concessions
stands, officials said.
Some current and former
swap meet vendors have angri-
ly claimed the expansion -
most notably the planned man-
ufacturers area -would hurt
their small businesses by
undercutting their prices.
On Monday nigtit. about 60
vendors attended a meeting
discussing the expansion plans.
But since strict rules allowed
only current sellers with photo
identification cards inside,
some of the most outspoken
expansion critics -former sell-
ers who claim they stopped
selling at the swap meet
because they were harassed by
Tel Phil officials -said they
stayed away.

But there has to be closure.
What I threw out. partly as wlum

Alamitos to call a timeout to
regroup.
•(Coming out strong) gave us
a lot of confidence,• Newport
Coach Bill Barnett said. 11 And
you really need that in a game
like this."
The Griffins (18-10) were
ranked second in Orange Coun-
ty going into the postseason
playoffs and began to prove
their stature.
Reagan Wilson and Shelli
Llnza scored in the second quar-
ter to tie the score, and Los Al
rattled off nine shots to New-
port's three.
Meanwhile, Newport l;iarbor
seemed to become staynant on
offense.
Barnett noted, though, that
Newport was still able to stick to
its defensive game plan.
"I saw (Los Alamitos) play
Irvine earlier and knew that
we'd have to take away their
counterattack,• Barnett, who
has tasted CIP championship
glory 10 times with Newport
boys teams, said. "They really
don't have much after that.•
It wa/ Jvfoore's main respon-
sibility to shut down that
.counter.
•(Barnett) had really done a
lot of research and we knew we
bad to shut that down,• Moore
said. "We just had to be really
aware because sometimes we're
a bit oblivious to what's going
on.•
While Moore's scoring oppor-
tunities have been chiseled
down this season, thanks to the
solid breakthrough offensive
performances of Cox, her lead-
ership was key Tuesday.
"Alden did a great job
today," Barnett said.
After Moore's third-quarter
goal boosted the Tars to 3·2,
Cox added a crucial insurance
goal with 2:04 left in the contest
when she walked into a gap and
delivered a six-meter score.
With 25 ticks ·remaining,
Griffin Amy Valois converted a
backhand score, and Los Al had
a final chance to tie the score
with just four seconds left.
Strong-armed goalie Jackie
Frank attempted a full-length
shot that Melanie Craig
attempted to put back.
Kennedy, who tallied six
saves, fended off the despera-
tion attempt.
