"It's such a devastating t411lg, • Greens~ said. · ·
The professor later apolog:ized
to the ~ after the student, with -
the league's help, sent a letter to ·
the teacher and sent copies to a
dean and the division head,
according to Greenspan.
Greenspan declined to give
the profess6r's name, and said the
incident was not publici7.ed at the
time. • -
Jim Carnett, OCC spokesman,
said Thursday that neither he nor
several school administrators he
checked with were aware of the
incident, but "that doesn't mean
it didn't happen.
"It sounds ~e it was
addressed pretty directly and the
faculty member did respond," C~ettsaid. . ·
•I'm sure had it continued to
fester anq the student did not feel
his or her concerns had been
appropriately addressed, I know
the issue would have been dis-
cussed at -another level on cam-pus.• .
Carnett said the college is
· committed to addressing and pro-
moting diversity ~sues, particil-
Wly since the campus bas seen a
marked increase in international
students over the last decade.
The college regularly holds
. workshops for faculty and staff
. addressing such issues, Carnett
se,id .. And just six weeks ago,
Human Relation$ Commission
per:sonnel tr.ained a team of_stu-
dents, administrators, faculty and
staff about hate crimes, Carnett
said.
QCC invited the commission
staff in response to reports of
problems ·with bate literature
being distributed at other com-
munity colleges, Carnett saiq.
"We wanted to know ~ow to
respond to that if it happened
here, what to be s~tive to,"
Carnett $&d. "We wanted to arm
ourselves with a means for
responding appropriately."
And March 18 to 22 will mark
the campus' "Celebrating Diver-
sity• event, a week of workshops,
lectures and other activities deal-
ing with issues relating to diversi~
ty. Workshop subj~cts include
"Teadung Tolerance"· and
"Leaming From The Past," as
well as issues involving religions
and cultures, Carnett said.
•we have more international
students than any com,m).Ulity col-
lege in the founty," he said ..
"We've made a conscious effort to

Twenty-three college teams
took full advantage of this
weekend's storm, as they
competed in the South Series
No. 3 art'd 4 in 10-15 knots of
breeze. Detµlltely not the norm ·
for Newport, steady breeze
prevailed all weekend for the
sailors. giving them two great
regattas with lots of races.
On Saturday, South Series
No. 2 racing began up by Lido
. lsle YC, but as the Wind began
to shift, racing was taken to the
Turning Basin, where longer
courses were sailed.
Newport residents and UC
1'.rvine sailors Andy Beeckman
and Carrine Palm in A division
and Peter Wells, with crew
Melissa Cutter of Irvine, in B
division. ~asily won the day,
41 points ahead of Stanford.
On Sunday, after an early
morning delay due to the.lack of
wind, South Serles No. 4 saw
fo\ir races in a steady 10-15
knots. •
Once again, UC Irvine won •
the regatta with the same teamf
18 points ahe.iji of USC.
Other lOdft' sailors included
Danielle Hill 4nd Fiona McLean,
who sailed on the UC Irvine N
team and finished fifth in both
' regatta, and Cortney Polovina,
who sails for UC Berkeley and

coveted spots for the
Olympic Games Trials in

By Stephanie Keefe, Daily Pilot
A lex Ascencios has just moved one
step closer to Olympic Gold. At the
first Laser Class Olympic qualifier,
Ascencios finished 15th, earning him a
spot at the 1iials in May.

I f
' Because the Laser will be a new class in
the Olympics beginning this year and
because of the sheer number of competi-
tors who have been participating in Laser
regattas around the country, the Olympic
Conunittee has selected three different
regattas from which 50 sailors will be .
pooled to compete in the Thais.
This first regatta, the Laser Midwinters
East Coast Championships, was held in
Stuart, Florida Feb. 22-25. Two hundred
sailors competed for a chaJ'l(:e at the 15
qµalifying spots in conditions that' were
less than perfect.
The Deet was broken up, leaving the
top 100 sailors to race against each Qther in
"'2-6 knots of shifty and spotty breeze,
which made it ha,rd for the competitors to
plan their strategies.
"You wanted to go for it, but at the
same time, you want.ed to be conserva-
tive," said Ascencios.
The next chance for sailors to qualify
will be at the Laser Midwinters West Coast
Championships, which will be held at
Alamitos Bay YC in Long Beach, March
14-17.
The final "last chance" qualifying regat-
ta will take place in St. Petersburg, Fla.
April 4~7, where the top 20 will quality.
The 1\ials themselves will be held May
4-12·at the Savannah Sailing Center in
Georgia. Only the winner goes onto the
Olympic Games.

League action last year -the

perform much better in 1996 in
terms of ·wms and losses -
Mesa ret\lm.$ its best player,
senior Jacob Jonef, while a
handful of underclassmen will
battle it out for playing time.
Royer, a 34-yea:r-olq calligra·.
. pher who once played on a '
boys tennis team in high school,
understands the concept of
being an underdog.
•1 realize Costa Mesa's ten-
nis team has been , a little
weak," said Royer, a NeWp<>rt

who learned of the school's
coaching vacancy through a
cook at the club.
"I accepted the job" because

on the drcuit.

"I was just tbro~ into this,

Actually, Royer has a plan.
"Sometimes you don't ~ow
