I f ' Because the Laser will be a new class in the Olympics beginning this year and because of the sheer number of competi- tors who have been participating in Laser regattas around the country, the Olympic Conunittee has selected three different regattas from which 50 sailors will be . pooled to compete in the Thais. This first regatta, the Laser Midwinters East Coast Championships, was held in Stuart, Florida Feb. 22-25. Two hundred sailors competed for a chaJ'l(:e at the 15 qµalifying spots in conditions that' were less than perfect. The Deet was broken up, leaving the top 100 sailors to race against each Qther in "'2-6 knots of shifty and spotty breeze, which made it ha,rd for the competitors to plan their strategies. "You wanted to go for it, but at the same time, you want.ed to be conserva- tive," said Ascencios. The next chance for sailors to qualify will be at the Laser Midwinters West Coast Championships, which will be held at Alamitos Bay YC in Long Beach, March 14-17.
