NEWPORT BEACH -Some-
where in an undisclosed Orange
County laboratory, awaiting clas-
sification, sits the product of six
months and S1.7 million worth of
. archaeological excavations.
Officials from Th~ Irvine Co.,
who supervised the excavation of .
the Newporter North site, say it will
likely be another eight months to a
year before the findings are ready
for presentation to the public.
1 But the assembled data. which
indudes remains of several animals
and possibly a newly discovered
species, will help tell the story of the
people who, 4,000 to 10,000 years
ago, lived adjacent to what is now
Jamboree Road, officials contend.
Did these people, 1esearchers
are wondering, communicate or
trade with tribes along the coast?
Where was their central food sup-
ply if not from the Pacific Ocean?
Are they the same people who
migrated from the Central Coast
region of Santa Barbara?
"It's probably one of the oldest
sites in Orange County,• said David
Belardes, chief and ch.airman ct the
Ju.aneno band of Mission Indians.
"It's yielding a lot of information
that we don't have about bow our
ancestors lived We'll have a real
nice report when we're done.•
According to Bernard Maniscal-
co, president of The Irvine Co.'s
Coast Cormnunity Builders division,
the first archaeological excavation
of Newporter North took place in
1912. Local oolleges conducted class
field studies in the 1970s,
unearthing artifacts and a partial
skeleton, which are housed in an
on-aunpus musewn in Fullerton.
Before clearing the way for
what will ultimately be a 173-lot
planned community, Irvine Co.

By Jim Walters. Daily Pilot
COSTA l'v1ESA -Senior right-
hander Jeremy Starns struck out
nine while pitching a complete-
game, four-hitter as Costa Mesa
High notched a 4-2 win Tuesday
over Century in second-round pool
play of the Costa Mesa Tournament.
First b&seman Matt Broesam-
le's ground-rule double to left-
center in the bottom of the open-
ing inning got the Mustangs on
the board first, drl'lling home left
fielder Mike Adelmund, who had
opened the game with a single to
left.
The Mus-
tangs commit-
ted two of their
four errors in
the top of the
second, but it
was a sun-aid-
ed line I drive
that roUed to
the wall
untouched for
a double that Starns
put Starns in
some serious, early trouble.
With runners· at second and
third following an error and the
double, Century tried a suicide
squeeze that Starns pounced on
and fed back to catcher Julius
Vasquez to cut the runner down
at the plate.
Century still managed to pick
up the game-tying run on two
throwing errors.
• 1 can understand misjudgtn~
a fly ball, and both of the errors, :
Starns said "The key play was •
the squeeze. That made things a •
lot easier.· ·
·Jeremy hung in there when
the pillars were falling apart.•
said Mustang Coach Doug Deats.
Mesa stole a run in the second.
after right fielder Tony Arveilos
struck out, but reached on a wild-
p1tch third strike. Adelmund fol·
lowed with a double, bis second
hit of the game, to drive him in. A
well-executed. bunt by shortstop
Seth Halverson and a saaifice ny
by Broesamle made it 3-1.
Mesa went ahead ·4-1 in the
fourth on a double by second
baseman Layne DeTemple, wbo
c,me in on an errant pick-off
attempt and a wild pitch. Centu-
ry added its final run in the fifth
on an RBI-double by catcher
David Gomez.
The Mustangs {2-0) will hOlt
