your breath, apprehen-

But your anxiety is

of the hospital bed -their
faces fearful as they
watch a sei.zme violently
shake their toddler's body.

"They don't know the reassur-

in a soft voice, also watching the
scene from the window. "They
think: This is the first step of my
baby dying."

called at Hoag. "In most specialities,
you tend to do the same job over
and over again, but in ER. that's not
the case."
The oopredictability is part of
the appeal for those who are
devoted to emergency care.
"We have controlled chaos and
that's the way we like it," says Vic-

Once

blend in with the walls.
Hours before, in another sec-

medical team's en ergies were
focused on a man suffering from
stomach cancer. He had stopped
breathing and blood furiously
spurt from his body -staining the
doctors' and nurses' blue and
white uniforms crimson.

ThiS is reality. 'This is life in the emer-
genw room at Hoag Memorial Hospital in
Newport Beach, without the television stars,
set and pandemonium. There are no com-
mercial breaks, nor a script mapping out
how the day will start or end.
"You have to all of a sudden get run-

nurse who was part of the medical team
fighting to save the man's life. "You stick to "It's really exciting work," says Super, 52,

'Shrew' soars with Wham-ham .
tempo .~ ~-yQm;-fa<;e; attitude
By Tom Titus, Dail}' Pilot
I t's a small wonder that. in this
era of libe.rated w01I1en climb-
ing corporate and PQlitical lad-
ders, any theater would dare pro-
duce Shakespeare's "The Taming
of the Shrew."
But even the most militant of
feminists should be able to enjoy
and appreciate the version now
on stage at South Coast Reperto-
ry. •
In an inspired concept. direc-
tor Mark Rucker has transplanted
the classic comedy from Padua,
Italy, to an Italian-American
neighborhood sometime in the
late 19.SOS when macho attitudes
were as prevalent as in the Eti7.a-
bethan period when the play was
written. What's more, be makes
the charade work (never mi.nd
the textual'feferences} with a
wham-barn tempo and a major
dose of in-your-face Italian atti-
tude.
From the outset, when the
stage-encompassing curtain is
sucked down into a trap door,
which is then slammed shut by
one of the two Damon Runyon
types who open the play, Rucker's
"Shrew" is full of vitality. There's a
good qeal more sexual tension
here than in most stagings, and the
physical conflict is mfil'Velously
orchestrated.
Marco Bamcelli is outstanding
~the swaggering, leather-jacket-
ed Petrucbio, who canies Kate off
on his motorcycle after their brawl-
. ing courtship. It's a lusty, full.
blooded interpretation that draws

its strength from Banicelli's
assumption of power and authority.
There's a smoldering fire
behind the flashing eyes of Cindy
{(atz as the she-devil Kate, and
Katz measures it out judiciously,
erupting only when necessary. ~e she may appear to capitu-
late too early, Katz retains her
sense of power sk:illtully, even
when acceding to her husband's
bizarre observations.

; Fernando's curiosity is encouraging
to Super, who says the boy was lethar-
gic and nearly comatose when he was
p admitted to the ER at 9:37 a.m.
, "When he came in be was not
: responding at all,• Dr. Super said. "He
bas nausea and vomiting and can't
: · keep fluids down.
,__ "Now he is stabilized and better,
and we can wait for lab tests."
Fernando's mother, Ambrosia Juarez
sits quietly by her son's side, alternately
rubeing his-:;hoolder and leg' and mur-·
muring to him softly in Spanish.
Her son has been sick.tor two days
and a younger son is also ill at home,
she says through an ER nurse who
• translates her Spanish . Juarez first took
Fernando to Share Our Selves charity in
Costa Mesa earlier that morning and he
was seen by a doctor there, she says.
But when a urine sample was taken,
the boy passed out and Juarez took
him to Hoag.
Nodding her head solemnly, and
near tears, Juarez says she is wonied
for her son. Although Super's Spanish
is limited, his comfort1ng tone and con-
cern for the boy don't need translation.
The ER is linked. by pneumatic tubes
. to other parts of the hospital. Patients'
fluid samples, like blood, urine and
other specimens, are coded by comput-

involving her dog, Fancy.
"My dog we t on the bed and I put

• wearing a helmet and sitting atop her

&l her at night, but I didn't do it these

attack like this for years," King says.
' . "It's not as exciting as 'ER',• she
added, ref erring to the television show

surroundings. "I watch it all the ~e."
• Super gives King medication for her

Since the

By Richard Dur:m, Daily Pilot -A fter coming up just short

Nothing Terrell of Newport Beach figured
it was time to retire.
: He had a good situation
: waiting for him, after all, at the

Some of his proteges -Lla
Rousset and Monica Bridle, for
example -were even in the
same waters as Terrell last
weekend <luring the preliminary
trials for the U.S. Olympic canoe

Arco Olympic 1taining Center in
Chula Vista.
TerreU, a three-time
Olympian, came out of
retirement in Jan. 1995 to
reintr.oduce himself to the world
of competitive paddling.
The results l}ave been
extraordinary.
Terrell, who supports his
training as a craftsman of wood
and composite materials,
manufacturing custom paddles
for elite ca,noeists, won three of
four events and has already
been selected for the U.S.
Olympic Training Squad in the
men's singles 500 and 1,000
meters.
On Friday, Terrell won his
1,000-meter heat in 4:17.40, well
ahead of runner-up Joe Harper
(4:29.82). Terrell was also first on
Monday in the'500 meters, going
2:11.34. .
Terrell, who turns 31 on April
20, teamed with Newport
Beach's Brandon Krovoza on
Monday to win the 500-meter
canoe doubles in 2:02.08.
• Terrell, last year's Pan
American Games winner in the
500-meter singles, is among the
favorites to represent the
Western Hemisphere at the 1996
