This was the Normandin family's firs"'t exposure to youtl'l basketball and, to my husband Jim and myself, the roguish col- lection of fourth grade boys under Coach "Duffy" Outfield's direction looked like promising basketball stars. When my 9-year-old son Frankie came trotting out on the courffor his first game peggy normandin handshake. iyler, on occasion, could pull off a miraculous long shot from half court. And Frankie had figured out that three-second-penalty-thing. t The NewiJ0!11~· ~old-est pier in Sou alifor- nia. It was built in quiet waters near a submarine canyon. The McPad.dens allowed fishing from the wharf despite the dangers of s~g freight cars on the busy trades, and avid anglers took Ute risk to catch yellowtail and hal- ibut in the 1890s. The wharf was built by James and Robert McFadden, w)).ose shipping business was a signifi- cant contributor to the growth of the village they named Newport Beach which sprang up around their wharf. It was quickly apparent that Team Magic was an enthusiastic and thoroughly adorable band of roolo."es. There wasn't a ringer in the bunch. I learned that I really liked watctung youth basketball. Other kids' sports programs in our area have seemed -at times to be managed more for the edification of the parents, with designer-quality banners and elaborate snack schedules. But this basketball program at the Newport Harbor Boys Club felt really down-home. By mid-season, Sean had learned to pass th~ ball a little bit. Eric was getting the signals down. Corey had perfected his "pit bull" rebound technique. Milce and Greg had devel- oped a half-time good luck In one particularly painful game, when we were twenty- some points behind, our player scored a basket for the otl'ler team. The referees looked gen- uinely sympathetic and patted ' our weeping player on the back as the scoreboard registered two more points for lhe "other guys." We went into the playoffs with not a victory to our credit. Team Magic was walking away from the '96 basketball season with a scorecard of defeats, s0 wby were we smil- ing? Maybe because these sev- en fourtlryrade boys had had-a- whole lot of fun learning bow to play the game of basketball. Maybe because they were allowed to be just fourth grade boys in a world that's rushing them into manhood. For whatever the reason, we all walked away from the gym feeling like we were ahead of the game. And, maybe, that was the Magic of it all. • PEGGY NORMANDIN'S column appears Mondays. pier.
