Trauma and triumph from a personal view A utobiographies are peren- nial favorites of many readers -accounts of twmoil and triumph recounted from the uniquely personal per- spective of the famous, tntamous and ordinary individuals who have lived them. Among the most eloquent of recent years is "The Liar's Club,• a rec- ollection of a childhood marred by alcohol abuse, rape, multiple mar- riages and ancestral madness. Reported with warmth and hwnor, poet - Mary Kan's portrait of her dys- functional clan is, in the end, a journey into joy, about "a tenific family of liars redeemed by a slow unearthing of truth." Karr's fans also may appreci- ate Rick Bragg's ·All Over But the Shoutin.'" In unsentimental prose, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist describes his rise from poor white Southern boyhood to New York Times reporter. Central to the tale is his courageous mother, left to raise three sons on her own after her husband leaves -a feat that moves Bragg to write this moving • expression of thanks. After a 20-year absence from the literary world, another Pulitzer Prize winner reenters it with "Crabcakes." Linked by the search for belonging, this collec- tion of Allen McPherson's remi- niscences explores racism and common humanity. It concludes with the author's recollections of bis stint as a lec- turer at a Japanese university, where be discoven a deadng in his sense of dtalocatlon. All who bated to see this med- itation end should enjoy "Walk- ing in the Shade, 1949 to 1962. • In the second installment of her autobiography, i.es::J1 portrays her life as a writer single mother in war-weary London during the Cold War, when com- munism dominated society's intellectual life. As much social history as personal narrative, her memoir is replete with stories of relation- ships with political and literary friends and foes that reveal the revered author as eminently human. 1Wo new autobiographies are reminiscent of Frank McCourt's hugely popular "Angela's Ash- es." In "A Dublin Girl," Elaine Crowley paints a picture of her coming of age as her Irish family descends into poverty in the years before World War II. Also set in Ireland, "Are You Somebody?" focuses on Nuala O'Faolain's unhappy childhood and search for meaning in an often lonely life. Now a colum- nist at Ireland's most respected newspaper, O'Faolain, like many others who present their stories, illwninates how troubled roots can finally give us wings. • OIECX IT OUT is written by the staff of the Newport Beach Publk Library. Arthur Silbas, 34, was sitting in the front passenger seat of the 1995 Explorer, which was moving north- bound when it veered to avoid another car at the intersection of Newport Boulevard arid Del Mar Avenue around 12:20 p.m., police said. The second car -a 1997 Pon- tiac Sunfire moving eastbound - sent the Explorer rolling over after clipping it on the rear, said Costa Mesa Police Officer Aaron Thomas. Thomas said the Explorer slid about 100 feet on its side, with Sil- bas' arm scraping along the asphalt as it went. Silbas, whose driver's license puts his weight at 335 pounds, could not escape the car through the shattered front windshield, as did a passenger in the back seat, police said. That prompted rescue person- nel to deploy the Jaws of Lile, peeling off the car's roof to rescue Silbas and Valarie Robinson, 34, a Costa Mesa woman who had been driving, police said. Now, at last, : it's time for the act. : Only El Nhio can delay today's first : round of the Toshiba Senior Classic at ; Newport Beach Country Club, which has : been buzzing all week with fabulous : weather and the traveling band of golfers : on the Senior PGA Tour. Tee times beqin at : 8a.m. : Rain? We could wake up to it, then : watch it blow away as quickly as it got l here. Today's weather is not expected to postpone the action, and when the mucb- anticipated curtain does finally rise, the tens of thousands of people in attendance will have their eyes on the leader board. Who will be on top Sunday afternoon? Will this year's winner dance and sing and party the night away with the volunteers like Jim Colbert did two years ago? Will another record playoff decide it? It's time to find out who can best con- quer this much-improved golf course in three rounds -with $1.1 million at stake and the winner getting a $165,000 chuck. It's impossible to predict a champion, but no one is e ntering Toshiba Senior Clas- sic IV hotter than Gil Morgan, the tour's leading money winner ($424, 100) who won the Senior Slam earlier this week at Los Cabos. Morgan, who won six tournaments last year on his way to a $2, 160,562 payday, opened the year by capturing the Master- Card Championship in Hawaii, a field lim- ited to last ~ear's tournament champions only, then won again at the LG Champi- onship in Naples, Fla. "Hale Irwin (the leading money winner on the tour last year at $2,343,364) was telling me at Cabos that I was off to a suni- lar start as be was last year,· Morgari said. "I played great early in the year at the MasterCard and was fortunate to win at the LG. I'm off to a good start, so I'm look- ing forward to playing this week.• Morgan, few probably remember, was one putt away from joming defend.mg champion Bob Murphy and Jay Sigel w last year's playoff at NBCC. "I was in this tournament last year," Morgan said. "I had a chance until the last hole, and I let it get away. I missed a putt (on 18) from about 10, 12 or 15 feet." Morgan had birdied 17 to pull wttbm a stroke of the lead in last year's final round. "I don't think I would've lasted nine holes (in the tour-record playoff), .. he said, refer- ring to the standard which has since been broken, when David Graham defeated Dave Stockton in a 10-hole playoff earher this year at the Royal Caribbean Classic in Key Biscayne, Fla. The course at NBCC, considere t in its best shape ever under the der- ship or club president Jeny derson and course superintendent Ron enedict, is a par 71 that will play to 6,57:3 yards - one or the shortest courses on the Senior Tour. George Archer won the inaugural Toshi- ba Seruor Classic at Mesa Verde Country Club in 1995. Tweit said some conlusion about a CIF Southern Section rule that renders all players receiving red cards ineligible for the following game led to two Sailors playing Ul the Feb. 13 reg- ular-season finale against Irvine. Harbor won the game, 3-1, but the two players, both starters, should have sat out the game, prompb.ng the forfell "We were not in compliance Wlth the rules, so we have forfeit- ed that win,· said TWeit. The two Newport players received two yellow cards, an automallc red card, in a Peb. 11 victory over Woodbridge. lWo yellow-card mfractions, while disqualifying a player for the rest of the game, allow a coach to substitute for that player. A red card not involving two yellow cards, however, requires the team to play one player short the remainder of the game. ' How do they get here? • There's a pecking order for the senior pros. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Some get lucky, others scratch and claw their way into the field of 78 players in the Toshiba Senior Classic at Newport Beach Country Club. Ever wonder how the play- ers get here? There are more than 200 active golfers on the Senior PGA Tour, but numbers will tell you that most do not qualify. 11!-e selection process for entrance into any full-field Senior Tour event begins with the previous year's top 31 mon- ey leaders, all of whom are ful- ly exempt. Those players are essentially given carte blanche in terms of the events they want to play. Golfers who did not crack the top 31 can still qualify with this criteria if any players who are listed in the top 31 decide not to enter. For example, if four players in the top 31 don't commit, then the four players ranked 32 through 35 are eligi- ble to sign up (this bottoms out at the 50th player). The list is made up of players who didn't finish in the top money winners from the previ- ous year, but have had very successful careers on the tour. Many of the MasterCard Champions (or Super Seniors) who are over 60 fall into this category. The next group of players are admitted based on their performances in the previous year's Senior PGA Tour Quali- fying School. The top eight fin- ishers who sign up for the tour- nament are in, which makes 70 players, at this point, who have gained entrance into the Toshi- ba Senior Classic. The next four players are &ccepted on sponsor exemp- tions, selections that the tour- nament officials can exercise completely at their own discre- tion. This year, Brian Barnes, Dick Hendrickson, Bruce Devlin and John Schroeder fall into this category. > ,. ••• ,;--• • I .. For the Senior Tour's relative newcomers, nothing could be far- ther from the truth. •Overall, the Senior Tour is a lot more competitive than I anticipat- ed,• said Gil Morgan, who enters today's first round of the Toshiba ~or Classic at Newport Beach Country Club as the tour's leading money winner. •(Players on the PGA Tour) told me the goli courses would be a lot shorter, the greens are not so fast and the pins are in the middle. But I still haven't seen a pin in the middle of a green yet. The pin placements are sometimes more difficult than the regular tour, and the greens are just as quick. The goU courses just aren't as long. •And, of course, you're playing three rounds. Maybe one of the biggest differences is the length of the rough -it's not as deep." Larry Nelson, who won the American Express Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., also disputes the Senior Tour's reputation. •Things I've heard about the Senior Tour are not always correct, like the pins being in the center of the greens," Nelson said. MThe Senior Tour's pins are tougher than the regular tour's. They're closer to the front of the greens and tucked away near bunkers. •The regular tour also has its 6-6- 6 rule -six medium, six easy and six hard (pin placements).• According to Hugh Baiocchi, NBCC is similar to the courses he grew up playing in South Africa. •The greens here are a lot faster than I thought, especially after the rain they've. had," Baiocchi said. • Hale lr'Win, last year's leading money winner on the Senior Tour with a record earnings total of $2,343,364, arrived at NBCC about 12:35 p.m. from Mexico, where he played in the Senior Slam. "The way Gil Morgan has start- ed this year is almost identical to my start last year," said Irwin, who won nine tournaments last year. Biggest gallery . Thursday belonged to Lee Thevino. • On Wednesday, some pro-am rounds in the morning were cut one hole short because of time. "I guar- antee you they'll play faster (Thurs- day)," said Jake Rohrer, tournament co-chairman. the two volunteers at the No. 1 tee. • Best tee shot off No. 1 came from pro Rocky Thompson, who uses a 56-inch driver. Thompson cut the , No. 1 dogleg left, crushing his drive over the palm trees and onto the fringe. He pumped his arm back and forth like a hockey player scor- ing a goal. • 1\vo of the five boys and girls clubs showed up late Tuesday for the Taco Bell Junior Clinic hosted by Dave Stockton, who had com- pleted his lesson when they arrived. The kids were still given a Taco Bell lunch and gift package. When the clinic ended, Rohrer was signing autographs on the back of T-shirts for the kids. •They must have thought I was important or something,· quipped Rohrer, who might be the busiest person anywhere in the facility.
