NEWPORT-MESA -Before
Tuesday, Diana Leach's involve-
ment. with Killybrooke School in
Costa Mesa :went as far as con-
aucting meetings in its multi-
purpose room· about the con-
struction of a water treatment
plant near the school.
But on Tuesday, the assistant
general manager of Mesa Con-
solidated Water District got to
be the school's principal -but
just for the day.
Leach and 20 other local
business and community lead-
ers were invited to participate in
the statewide Principal for a
Day program.
From owners of fast-food
restaurants to high-level city
officials, participants bad a
chance to find out just bow big
a job it is to oversee the opera-
tion of a school.
•tt's been very interesting for
me,• Leach said. •This is one
way that I could be more
involved in the community.•
The experience opened Leach's
eyes to some of the challenges and
obstacles educators face in the
Newport-Mesa school district.
•There are so many needs
depending on the mix of stu-
dents," she said. "It really gives
me a better understanding of
what's here."
Killybrooke Principal Ned
Hall said the program, which has
been in place for seven years, is
an effective method of getting
the community to help at the
schools and spotlight the needs
of individual campuses.
"It's important for the commu-
nity to realize how hard the
schools and teachers are working
to meet the needs ol all our stu-
dents," Hall said. •The more peo-
ple we get to participate and to
help out in the schools, the better."
Included in the list of interim
administrators were Costa Mesa
City Councilman Joe Erickson,
Newport Beach Dairy Queen
owner George Alexander and
the owner of Avila's Bl Ranchito

Authorities are warning residents to be

received complaints in recent days that
telemarketers with no connection to the
department have asked residents for mon-

Those seeking to donate to firefighters'
groups should contact their local depart-
ments directly, Thomas said.

in limbo

• Sherwood's resignation
threatens to unravel fabric
of successful Mesa girls
basketball program.
C osta Mesa High girls
basketball, one of the
most successful
Newport-Mesa District athletic
programs of the 1990s, has
survived change before.
Shontel Sherwood., who
resigned as coach this week
after two-plus seasons, was, in
fact, the Mustangs fourth head
coach in the decade.
But, depending on what
happens with the pursuit of its
next coach, which many believe
will begin and end with former
bea<t man Jim Weeks,
Sherwood's depart\U'e could
begin a weakening of the link
to tradition begun when Lisa
McNamee took over for Weeks
before the 1992-93 run to the
CIF State Division ill title game
in Oakland.
Weeks was the coach when
the Olivia DiCamilli-led
Mustangs won their first
Southern Section championship
(1989-90), made a return trip to
the section final in 1990-91, and
collected the first of three
straight Pacific Coast League
titles in '91-92.
But something changed when
McNamee, with then-junior
varsity coach Sherwood. (with
whom she'd worked at Estancia)
in tow, arrived to unify a varsity
team and a program lacking,
let's just say, harmony.
Beyond a disciplined, intense
and passionate coaching style
that McNamee and Sherwood.
shared, the program quickly
instituted now-traditional rituals
like the postgame team hug.
Even the pregame wannup
music (featuring the theme song
from MLaveme and Shirley")
seemed to strengthen the
players' increasing identity and
pride in the program McNa.mee
and her staff solidified in two
seasons, before McNamee left
to coach Irvine Valley College.
Even when McNa.mee's
successor, Len Whitacre, ran the
show for all of the 1994-95
campaign and the better part of
the following season. Sherwood,
as well as fellow assistant Cindy
VyskociL were prominent links
to the definitive atmosphere that
encircled the program under
McNamee's reign.

• Orange Coast College football
' coach to undergo prostate cancer
surgery today at USC hospital.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
LOS ANGELES -Orange Coait College's
Bill Workman, an Orange County football
coaching icon, will undergo surgery today at
7:30 a.m. for prostate cancer at the USC Nor-
ris Compr~ensive Cancer Center and Hospi-
tal. • .
Workman, OCC's bead football coach for
the past dozen years, is expected to return in
six to eight weeks, he said Tuesday morning
before leaving for the center for pre-operation
procedures.
•The prognosis is good, because we caught
it real, real early," Workman, 56, said. MI
should be on my feet and rolling by summer,
anyway. I understand it's not a fun surgery."
In the interim, OCC defensive coordinator
Mike Taylor, who has been with Workman
since he arrived on the Pirates' C8'Jlpus in
1986, will act as head ooach.
Workman, who missed five months of
spring recruiting-four years ago because of a
back injury that required surgery on May 1,
1994, told Taylor of ~ plight about a month
ago.
~u caught us by surprise, beca~e he had
no symptoms or no pain,• Taylor said. Mlt'U be
like a couple of years ago, except he hasn't
been really bad like (in 1994). When he had
his back injury, he'd been hobbling for a long
time. This time, there was no hobbling."
Workman, one of only two OCC bead foot-
ball coaches since 1962 (along with Dick
Tucker), has been coaching for 35 years,
including 13 seasons as Edison High's head
man during an unparalleled period in the
1970s and early 80s, when the Chargers
established an Orange County-record 32-
game winning streak from 1979 to 1981, won
;;even Sunset League championships and
three CIF Big Five Conference titles. The win-
streak record has since been broken by Los
Alamitos.
Workman, 59-64 in 11 seasons at OCC,
guided the Pirates to a 51-32 mark in his first
eight years. Prom 1990 to 1993, he led Orange
Coast to three postseason bowl-game appear-
ances.
•1 have a great deal of confidence in my
physician, and I'm certain things will go well.•
Workman said. •My doctor feels that I'm in
excellent health (oside from prostate cancer)
and that my recovery should be complete."
Workman, whose record at Edison was
109--33-5, spent 33 days in the hospital during
the 1994 spring. ·1 had to learn how to walk
again (after back surgery),• he said that sum-
mer.
But the Orange Coast program. in the midst
of a fine recruiting season. learned four years
ago bow to deal with an absent leader and
does not plan on missing a ·beet this spring.
•Recrµiting is going well." Thylor said,
Mand we're in the process now of a change in
(athletic directors). We'll see what happens,
but everybody's upbeat and I don't think
(Workman) would want us to stop the momen-
tum."

MARC MARTIN I DAft.Y PILOT
Bill Workman, working the sidelines during an August scrimmage.
OCC's, Pied Piper always has that extra offer,
to go the extra yard for his players' future.
t do Greg
bson and Don
Douglass have in
common? Plenty.
They both played for
football c~ch Bill
Workman at Orange
Coast College. And both
are tied to Tulsa Universi-
ty. The only wrinkle is
that they are 10 years apart.
Gibson was part of Coast's 8-2 team of 1987. Douglass
and his '97 Pirates weren't quite as fortunate, going 1-9
on th,Ef year.
But they, like 221 others over the past 12 years of the
Workman regime, have gone on to bigger and better
things, than.ks to Workman's passion for, if nothing else,
getting his players another shot beyond the community
college level.
Simple math reveals Orange Coast College football
has sent an average of 18 players to the next step,
year-in and year-out under Workman, and it is
Workman's constant calling card.
The 8-3 Orange County Bowl champions of '93 sent
28 players to the four-year college level.
.Some, like Isreal Ifeayni ('93), make it big-time with
the University of Southern California and the San
Francisco 49ers.
Or Chris Jackson ('96) with the Rose Bowl
Washington State Cougars. Or Newport Harbor High
product Steve Gonzales ('95) at Hawaii.
Others find themselves at such stops as Adams State,
Western Montana. Graceland, Chapman, Towson State,
Ottawa University or Gardner Webb College. The list
seems endless. Michigan, Arizona State, Calif omia,
Texas A&M, Clemson, Pittsburgh ...
So when Workman offers the prospect his calling
card, he knows the lure isn't simply wins and losses, but
the beach, the weather, and, the future.

ball coach John Emme had a frus-
trating homecoming Tuesday
night as the Sea Kings dropped a
1-0 nonleague verdict at Redon-
do Union High, where Emme was
the pitching coach the previous
five seasons.
Sea King starter Ryan Lewis
worked four masterful innings
(striking out five, walking one
and yielding just two hits) to
match Redondo counterpart 1Toy
Doram in the early going.
But an error on a tailor-made
double-play ball with one out in
the fifth allowed the hosts to post
the game's only run.
Ryan Achtergerg (2 for 4) and
Nate Lemmerman (2 for 2) bad
two-thirds of the hits for the Sea
Kings, who loaded the bases with
one out in the third, but saw
Doram, Emme's former pupil,
ring up back-to-back strikeouts
to retire the side.

+ If MWer ls on Ure: SCC fans,
pray that it is not Miller Tune.
RockhUI'St's Sarah Miller is the
NAIA's leading three-point
threat. The junior rang up -gulp
-138 treys this season. In one
game, she established an NAIA
record when she connected on 13
of 15 attempts from three-land. If
she is hot, the Vanguards could
get trounced. + That schedule thing: Davis and
his players insist that their 1997-
98 slate was the roughest it has
been in years, if not ever. Grant-
ed, a preseason trip to Idaho in
which they lost to Northwest
Nazarene (a ranked team in
NAIA Division II) before a crowd
of 4,000 will be a benefit. They
got off to a 17-3 start before
falling, 91-58, to NCAA Div. I
Pepperdine. But the Vanguards'
schedule is somewhat soft com-
pared to that of Rockhurst's,
which will move into NCAA Div. n next season.
