•We've won many awards in
the past. This is my sixth for direc-

in that it heaped so much praise

•Megan Cole had to shave her

Colored water seeping ·into slipply, Mesa told Suspected car thieves find
· themselves up a creek
•Water district wants to join other agencies in regu-
lating number of wells tapping into ground water.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Mesa Con-
solidated Water District officials
on Thursday said they'd like to
work closely with the Orange
County Water District and other
local water agencies in fonning a
groundwat~r basin regulatory
agency. ,
"We Pl.ave to look out for our
future," Mesa board president
'Ihldy Ohlig said. •we can't just
keep pumping and pumping. If
somebody pumps too much, we
might have to drill deeper and
then our energy costs go up, and
then our rates will go up."
Currently the Orange Coul1ty
Water District acts as an overseer
of the basin, but it doesn't have
the authority to limit the number
oi.welli an agency· drills.
"Ideally, our goal would be to
have each agency pump a certain
number of wells," one Orange
County Water District official told
the board on Thursday. "We
would not like to see one agency
damaged by negligent pumping
or construction."
The sentiment was expressed
after Mesa Condolidated's board
of directors heard reports from
two geotechnical consultants
hired after Mesa began noticing
traces of colored water in some of
its wells. The consultants spent
months monitoring Mesa's nine
wells and their levels of both clear
and colored water.
Colored water, which is an
abundant source in the groW)d
basin, appears brownish in color
and bas an odor. But it's still
drinkable. It's usually found at
deeper levels in the basin than
the clear water.
Mesa has plans on the books
for-a colored water treatment
plant. But district General Man-
ager Karl Kemp said those plans
were "put on pause" last month

sailor has qualified for
the 1996 Laser
Olympic Thals. Nick
. ~damson, a member of the

t the recent Laser Midwinters
-West Coast Championships,

:" Held at Alamitos Bay YC last
• weekend, the Laser Midwinters
West featured 164 competitors,
broken into two fleets. Six races
were held in the championship
series, in conditions that were
less than favorable.
Adamson tied in points with
• fellow top sailors Kevin Hall and
: John Torgerson, and was only
five points out of fourth, a
testament to the strength of
-the field.
Another resident, Alex
Ascencios, qualified at the
Laser Midwinters East.
Currently, both Adamson and
.. Ascencios are participating in a
• training clinic in Savannah.

As the Olympic Games draw
nearer, the preparations by the
city of Savannah are almost
complete.
In order to keep the sailing
site clear of non-racing boats
and unofficial spectator vessels,
the Department of Natural
Resources has built a physical
barrier that prevents access to
the Olympic area.
Important for the competitors,
Georgia's state legislature has
passed a short-term modification
to Georgia's standing PFD law.
All competitors, in both the
: Olympics and Para Olympics,

:corona cfel Mar High's boys tennis team
: will be when freshman sensation Taylor
: Dent stops growing so quickly and sopho-
more Drew Fuller returns next month from
a disciplinary situation.
CdM, entering its Sea View League sea-
son with high expectations, pushed away
its nearest challe nger on Thursday in the
league opener against host Woodbridge,
ranked No. 2 in Orange County's presea-
son poll.
The Sea Kings, ranked first in the coun-
ty, defeated the Warriors, 11-7, winning
five of six sets in the second round to pull
away.
"When you're down, 8-4, to Corona del
Mar, you're in deep trouble going into the
third round,• Woodbridge Coach Joan Wil-
lett said.
" While CdM's strength (singles) faltered
somewhat, its doubles teams gained some
steam, winning two-thirds of the sets. Reza
Jahangiri and Sam Shahrnardi, playing
No. 3 doubles for CdM, had their team's
biggest victory, a 6-4 decision in the second
round over Woodbridge's No. 1 team of
Brandon Shainfeld and Reza Farokhpay.
Farokhpay was last year's Sea View
doubles champion with rucky Kaplan.
Sameer Chopra and Greg Coleman,
CdM's No. 2 doubles team, swept, losing
only six games. It was their first match

playing together.
But while CdM Coach Tim Mang was
pleased with bis team's production in dou·
bles, it was junior standout Boris 1\lrkich's
performance in singles that opened eyes.
Actually, with a 25-0 record this season,
sweeping sets is nothing new for 1\lrkich,
an exchange student from Croatia whose
serve has been clocked in the neighbor-
hood of 110 m.p.h.
1\lrkich was ranked third in his home-
land last year in the under-17 division,
when he was 16. Among his highlights
were singles and doubles titles last year in
an international tournament in Slovenia.
1\lrkich, a powerful baseliner who can

also hit with finesse, picked apart Wood-
bridge's second and third singles players,
6-1, 6-2, but had to come from behind
against Chase Exon in the opening round,
the Warriors' No. 1 player who led. •-1,
before Turkich found his serve and came
back.
After 1\lrkich broke Exon for a 6-5 lead,
he had four service winners in the 12th
game, mclud.ing one at set point, to win.
"I started serving well, and that was the
key to the victory,· 1\lrk:ich said. ·1 like to
play an offensive game; I like to hit hard
from the baseline and go to the net. In
Croatia, we play a iot on-cl~
pretty hard making the adjustment (to
hardcourts). My knees are hurting me.
Hardcourts are way different, because the
balls are faster. But I like it better than clay;
I think for my game, this surface is better to
play."
CdM will host Back Bay rival Newport
Harbor next Thursday, with Geoff Abrams
expected to face CdM's trio of singles
standouts, including 1\lrkich, the "Croat-
ian Crunch."
When asked about facing Abrams, a
two-time member of the U.S. junior nation-
al team and the nation's former top-ranked
player in the 14s, 1\lrk:ich seemE!d rath~
confident.
"I hear (Abrams) is pretty good,· Tur-
kich · said, "I hope to beat him. Yeah,
(maybe Abrams has had bigger matches in
his career), but he hasn't seen me play. I
think he'll be surprised when he faces me.
