Frank, a ~k black thoroughbred hone spending his golden years in a stall at Centennial Parm on the Orang& County Fair- grounds, looks like he could have been a former Kentucky Derby champ. Bu( not SO, fair officials say. On request from a Daily Pilot reporter and racetrack junkie who thought Prank might have been in a winner's circle or two in his younger days, fair offi- cials set out to find out if the horse had a racing history the easiest way. they knew how. As a baby, every race horse has a number tattooed on the inside of its upper lip, a security measure meant to ensure that the horse entered in a race is the right one and not an impostor. But when fair spokeswoman Jill Uoyd and other fair officials flipped Prank's lip Friday: "We checked them both, top and bot- tom, and there was-no tattoo,# Uoyd reported. For the past 20 years, all most fans knew about John Wayne's grave site was that it was 10C4ted near the center of the Bayview Terrace section of Pacific View Memorial Park. But about three weeks ago, a bronze lasso-framed marker was placed on the site, park officials said. The granite-based marker looks like a Western scene out of one of the more. than 200 movies Wayne starred in. It's been almost 20 years since the death of the great star, who former President Ronald Reagan described as a man "who exemplifies the devotion to a country, it's good- ness, it's industry and it's strengths.• A Harris poll con- ducted 17 years after bis death showed he was still Amer- ica's number one actor. · Even though the burial site was a mystery, fans still poured in by the dozens each month, park officials said. They were often told to leave flowers and mementos by a flag pole or near a tree in the area . Wayne, who died of cancer in 1979, spent the last 16 years of his life living in his Bayshore Drive home which overlooked the harbor where his 70-foot yacht, The Wild Goose, was docked. Wayne complained that he sometimes had to wear a wig to hide from boating tourists who were being told by their guides over a loud speaker, "This is the home of John Wayne." On the other hand, be often warmly greeted those tourists by waving from inside what was then Orange County's highest-priced home. He also frequently came out to sign autographs tor children, who stood about for a peek of their movie hero. The marker, wbkb festun!s a scene of tr Spanish mis- sion and a westem landscape also includes a poem that was written by Wayne: •Tomorrow is the most important thing in life, Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands, It hopes we've learned something from yesterday." John Wayne's final resting place at Pacific View Memorial Park now bean a marker. By Tlm Grenda, Daily Pilot ORANGE COUNTY FAIR- GROUNDS -The Orange County Fairgrounds' bid to rescind its 1993 purchase of the Pacific Amphithe- atre will get underway today in Santa Ana Superior Court. The 32nd District Agriculture Association -the state agency which runs the fairgrounds -is suing the Nederlander Organiza- tion, the previous owner of the 18,500-seat outdoor concert venue loca~ on the fairgrounds. Pair offidAls d4im they were duped into paying $12.5 million for an amphitheater that is saddled with so many noise restrictions it is useless for even the quietest event. The sound limits, put in place to settle separate lawsuits filed against Nederlander by College Park residents and the city of Cos- ta Mesa, (eqUire that sound gen· erated inside the amphitheater be kept below 86 decibels. Pair officials contend tha't is so quiet that no live concert, play or community event, including East- er services, can be held without violating it and thus face fines. "Nede.rlander fully intended to defraud the fair into paying lbe premium price of $12.5 million for a useless amphitheater,• the law- suit st.ates. Fairgrounds attorney Tom Malcolm also alleges that Neder- lander officials knew the amphitheater was useless when they sold it, but they wanted to sabotage the Pacific Amphithe- atre and eHminate the local venue. as competition for the Arrowhead Pond and Irvine Meadows, which Nederlander hoped to .manage at the time. By knocking out the Pacific Amphitheatre, Nederlander offl· cials hoped to gain control ~ the lucrative Southern Celif omia con- cert market, Malcolm said. Nederlander attorney Nell Papiaiio, who is also one of nine past and current Nederlander employees named as dependents m the fair lawsuit, could not be reached for comment Friday. But Nederlander officials have in the past denied they knowing- ly sold the fairgrounds a useless amphitheater. The trial, which is expected to last several months, is set to begin at 9:30 a m. with jury selection in Supenor Court Department 91, 909 North Mam St in Santa Ana, fell spokeswoman Jill Lloyd said. By Vicki Zimmerman, OCC W:th the Winter Olympics coming to a close in Nagano, Japan, some armchair athletes may ~ome inspired to leave the glare of the TV for a chance to ,play ball or hit a tennis racquet this spring. Women over 45 who want to swing a bat should look to Chad Hanna, a 77-year-old local hero who bas devoted countless hours to building a powerlul women's softball league for over 100 middle-aged and senior women sports enthusiasts. Due to his continuing efforts to encowage and promote sports for seniors, last month Hanna was named State Sports Commissioner for Women's Softball by the California State Senior Games Foundation. An Orange Coast College instructor's assistant in construction technology, Hanna was selected to a join a prestigious group of senior athletes in California in order to promote and enhance physical activities for men and women over the age of 50. It has been a Herculean effort for Hanna, who knew aging baby boomers and senior women were looking for an outlet to remain active, enjoy the camaraderie of team sports and participate in league play that likelywas not available to them in their early school days. Hanna recognized from the start th.at there was a strong desire for such a league. His interest in helping players locate ... teams and, in turn, assisting teams scout for players is so earnest, he could easily be cast in a sequel to the film "A League of Their Own." "When I was involved in the men's senior baseball league, I used to hear the wives saying, 'Why isn't there something like this for usi' so I decided to do something about it,• Hanna said. In 1994, Hanna formed •Legends," the non-profit Senior Women's Softball Association to create and support opportunities for senior women to participate in team softball at a variety of skill levels. Through competitive and recreational play, the league promotes the goal of physical fitness, camaradetie and sportsmanship among women. Wearing his proverbial baseball cap to shield his tanned face from any more sun, Hanna delights in getting th~ word out to OCC faculty and staff. "I'd aiso like to use my role as commissioner to grab the attention of interested seniors at local senior facilities, recreation centers and to those women who have an interest, but are not connected with any organization," he said. Since age is a condition for play, Hanna diplomatically recruits players in low-key fashion. OCC professor of physical education and head women's soccer coach, Barbara Bond, enjoys playing. Marking a After ahnost 20 years of anonymity, John Waynes grave is marked egend· . F or the hundreds of dev~ted fans who still stream into the Newport Beach cemetery to pay respects to an American legend, the guessing game is over. For the past 20 years, all most fans knew about John Wayne's grave site was that it was located near the center of the Bayview Terrace section of Pad.fie View Memorial Park. But about three weeks ago, a bronze lasso-framed marker was placed on the site, park officials said. The granite-based marker looks like a Western scene out of one of the more than 200 movies Wayne starred in. It's been almost 20 years since the death of the great star, who former President Ronald Reagan described as a man "who exemplifies the devotion to a country, it's good- ness, it's industry and it's strengths." A Harris poll con- ducted 17 years after his death showed he was still Amer- ica's number one actor. Even though the burial site was a mystery, fans still poured in by the dozens each month, park officials said. They were often told to leave flowers and mementos by a flag pole or near a tree in the area. Wayne, who died of cancer in 1979, spent the last 16 years of bis life living in his Bayshore Drive home which overlooked the harbor where bis 70-foot yacht, The Wild Goose, was docked. Wayne complained that he sometimes had to wear a wig to hide from boating tourists who were being told by their guides over a loud speaker, "This is the home of John Wayne." On the other hand, he often warmly greeted those tourists by waving from inside what was then Orange County's highest-priced home. He also frequently came out to sign autographs for children, who stood about for a peek of their movie hero. John Wayne's final resting place at Padftc View Memorial Park now bears a marker. The marker, wbidJ features-a scene of .trSpanisb mis--..-.~~!PC=.l~ sion and a westettl landscape also includes a poem that was written by Wayne: MTomom>w is the most important thing in life, Comes Into us at midnight very clean. . By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot ORANGE COUNTY FAIR- GROUNDS-The Orange County Fairgrounds' bid to rescind its 1993 purchase of the Padflc Amphithe- atre will get underway today in Santa Ana Superior Court. The 32nd District Agriculture Association -the state agency which runs the fairgrounds -is suing the Nederlander Organiza- tion, the previous owner of the 18,500-seat outdoor concert venue located on the fairgrounds. Pair offida1s claim they were duped into paying $12.5 million for an amphitheater that is saddled with so many n<>lse restrictions it is useless f!'r even the quietest event. The sound limits, put in place to settle separate lawsuits filed against Nederlander by College Park residents and the city of Cos- ta Mesa, require that sound gen- erated inside the amphitheater be kept below 86 decibels. Pair officials contend that is so quiet that no U~e concert. play or community event, including East- er services, can be held without violating it and thus face fines. •Nederlander fully intended to defraud the fair into paying the premium price of $12.5 million for a useless amphitheater,• the law- suit states. Fairgrounds attorney Tom Malcolm also alleges that Neder- lander officials knew the amphitheater was useless when they sold it, but they wanted to sabotage the Pacific Amphithe- atre and eliminate the local venue. as competition for the Arrowhead Pond and Irvine Meadows, wtuch Nederlander hoped to manage dt the time. By 1 knocking out the Pacific Amphitheatre. Nederlander offi- cials hoped to gain control~ the lucrative Southern California con- cert market, Malcolm said. Nederlander attorney Neil Papiano, who is also one of nine past and current Nederlander employees named as dependents in the fair lawsµlt, could not be reachedfor conunentFriday.' But Nederlander officials have in the past denied they knowing- ly sold the fairgrounds a useless amphitheater. An Orange Coast College instructor's assistant in construction technology, Hanna was selected to a join a prestigious group of senior athletes in California in order to promote and enhance physical activities for men and women over the age of 50. It has been a Herculean effort for Hanna, who knew aging baby boomers and senior women were lookmg for an outlet to remain active, enjoy the camaraderie of team sports and participate in league play that likely was not available to them in their early school days. Hanna recognized from the start that there was a strong , desire for such a league. His interest in helping players locate teams and, in turn, assisting teams scout for players is so earnest, he could easily be cast in a sequel to the film •A League of Their Own." "When I was involved in the men's senior baseball league, I used to hear the wives saying, 'Why isn't there something like this for us?' so I decided to do something about it," Hanna said. In 1994, Hanna fon:ned "Legends," the non-profit Senior Women's Softball Association to create and support opportunities for senior women to participate in team softball at a variety of skill leveli. Through competitive and recreational play, the league promotes the goal of physical fitness, camaraderle and sportsm1uW»p among women. It also serves to ensure that seniors have an opportunity to continue their lifelong interest in physical activities. "Tile Legends league is open to ' 1 all women 45 and older who want to play softball regardless of their level of lkW.. Practices began 1n early February at ballparks and aottball fields around Orange County. With an average age of 52, the women range in age from 45 through the mld-70s. In 1996, a Legends ,45-a.nd-over tournament team placed first in tbe Women's World Championship in Phoenix Ariz. ' Then, in 1997, three of the Legends teams participated in the Senior Olympics in Tucson placing second, third and fourth to earn a pair of medals. "I played {ball) all my life,• Hanna said. ·r was a pitcher, but when I turned 7 5, my knees dtaated my activities, so co.aching kept me involved.• Slight and build and folksy in manner, Hanna is often dusted in wood shavings from his work in OCC's construction yard as a technician. Wearing his proverbial baseball cap to shield his tanned face from any more sun, Hanna delights in getting th~ word out to OCC faculty and staff. "I'd aiso like to use my role as commissioner to grab the attention of U'lterested seniors at local senior facilities, recreation centers and to those women who have an interest, but are not connected with any organization,• he said. Since age is a condition for play. Hanna diplomatically recruits players in low-key fashion. The Fountain Valley resident gently cajoles some of the •eligible• females to come out for the team by playing a few innings during practice. OCC professor of physical education and head women's soccer coach, Barbara Bond, enjoys playing. "the reason I play and enjoy it _so much is because' of the competition and camaraderie, most of all," Bond said. It appears that East has made a psychic opening bid, bcca.use partner must have quite a good hand to enter the auction, vulnerable, against two oppunents who arc bidding. For that reason, we rule out a jomp to three no IIUmp since that miaht, conceiv- ably, result in us missing a slam.
