But Mauldin's work doesn't

have helped the Woqien's Divi-
sion become stronger. more
dynamic and reach many more
women in the COI;IUDunity," said
Bernice Wa.lld.ns, the Women's
Division chairwoman.
Mauldin said she grew up in a
family of volunteers. Growing up,
her parents and grandparentS
showed her how much someone
can contribute to others.
"It's the Jewish tradition of
'tikkun olam,' or repair the
world," Mauldin said. "They
showed me by example how
much a person can do just that.•
Mauldin, a financial manager,
said besides volunteer-work, she
enjoys spending time with he r

People can ,t handle trutn··about drugs Newport-Mesa ex81Qines
Ditty-gritty· of speniling S ome years ago, I attended
a Kiwanis Club luncheon
meeting in Corona del ·
Mar to accept a gift on beball of
an organization with which I
was involved. The speaker that
day was a deputy sheriff whose
mission was to enlighten local
businessmen about the •drug
problem.~
Although I was certainly no
expert on substance abuse, I
had written enough about it
that I knew most of what he
was saying was baloney. But it
was what his audience wanted
to hear -and it was also the
sort of mix of misinformation
and morality on which we have
based a steadily losing cam-
paign against substance abuse'
in this country.
I was reminded of that day
by two events last week: when
yet another Band-Aid drug bill
-this one to reform the testing
procedure for student athletes
-was introduced in the state
Senate and when I attended the
zero-tolerance hearing of Coro·
na del Mar High School student
Ryan Huntsman. It struck me in
both instances, as it has many
times before, how badly we
need a voice of clarity to brush
aside all the hidde n agendas
and speak out on this issue.
I found such a voice lite rally
in my own back yard. Dr.
Joseph Pursch -who ran the
famous alcoholism program at
the Long Beach Naval Hospital
in the 1970s, practiced for many
years in Newport Beach and
has been a member of the Pres-

we are de"aling with the • drug

people want to hear.
Hl'm not welcome to deliver
this kind of message at public
meetings because I get every-
one mad at me and lose the
audience completely,• he said.
"They don't want to hear truth.
They want to hear truth that
suits them."
What kind of truth don't they
want to hear?
"Well, for starters, that we
can't stop drugs from coming
in, which is where most of our
money and effort is going. Our
only hope is to reduce demand,
and that's where our major
effort should be cfuected. The
individual needs to be treated,
and society needs to be educat-

"Then we need to evaluate
all drugs -not just those that
are illegal -and differentiate
among their addictive qualities
if we are to deal with them
intelligently. By far the most

addictive drug ls nicotine; more
than 9~% of its users are
addicted. I don't have exact
percentages, but in general,
heroin is about 70% addictive,
cocaine 60%, inarijuana 30%,
and alcohol 15%.
"The politicians don't want
to hear information like this.
They prefer to leave alcohol
and nicotine out of the picture
entirely, then lump all other
substances together. But dini·
cally, the bottom line is that you
should stop using any drug that
affects your mind in such a way
that you need to use it again

damages you and others, as
well."
If thls is true, the n why do
we make such a clear distinc-
tion between a drinker enjoy-
ing a cigarette and a pot smok-
er?
"Because nicotine and alco-
hol are both legal and socially
acceptable , and the other drugs
are not. Does that make sense?
No. But drinking and smoking
are politically suppor;ted, and
nothing is going to change that.
Drug policy is mostly being .
made by the only two groups

ANATOL,
AS ·IN
ANACIN
She has the ingredients to
stifle some headaches.
T here's no doubt Estancia
High Principal Peggy Anatol
has been a target of sorts
when the various woes of Eagles'
athletics are discussed.
Let's face it, if you want reasons
for success or failure in any
endeavor, the first stop is at the
top.
And when you scan the Eagles'
campus it's obvious that there has
been major problems in terms of a
lack of on-campus coaching with
walk-ons multiplying like rabbits,
on-campus coaches covering but
10 spots.
With the early retirement issue
creating 10 teaching openings at
Estancia, all eyes have shifted to
the big office on campus. with a
wonder of what's to develop?
• Peggy Anatol does not hesitate
when asked the question:
"I'm looking ... I'm open ... I'll
do anything to build this school
because I love this school ... I'm
open to just about anything ... J'm
looking for people who can offer
everything ... I want to build on
our athletic program ... We have a
new athletic future on the horizon
... Now is the time ... 1 want some
on-campus coaches ... ~
Enough said? Those comments
came from within a two-minute
spiel and if nothing else, left any
perceived side issue rather moot.
Another bonus is that one of
those 1 O spots is an opening in the
physical education department
with football coach Roy Scaffidi
already lined up to fill a void in
driver's education.
Anatol's response to the
question, not only in words, but in
the delivery, certainly cools some
doubts created over time.
The rumor was that Anatol was
"anti-athletics," and not from
simply one faction or comer of the
campus.
Estancia has had no monopoly
on the shrinking numbers' game.
Corona del Mar has even less

By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -It was obvious
that Santa Margarita High 's boys volleyball
team was not going to go away as players'
pa.rents lined one entire side of the Corona
del Mar gymnasium and hooted and
hollered, even with their so~ down two
games.
Sure enough, the comeback began and
did not end until the Eagles squeezed the
match out of Orange County's second-
ranJced Sea Kings, 6-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-
12, 15-9, in the Sea View League opener for
both squads.
After CdM's brilliant defensive show-
case in the first two games, Santa Margari-
ta (5-1, 1-0 in league) began to hit between
blocks, find open spaces on the floor and,
according to Eagles Coach Eddie Rapp,
enjoy itself. ·
• (CdM) played great defense and we
had to keep chipping away. We hung tough
and our guys started having a little more
fun," Rapp said.
The Sea Kings (3-2, 0-1) found them-
selves down, 5-10, in the third set despite
playing for the match .
Senior Greg Coon, a 6-foot-5 senior, and
classmate Greg Burden found the wood on
a few hits and tied the game a t 12-12. Coon
sent a kill straight down from his middle
blocking position to actually take a one-
point lead.
But after seven tiring sideouts, the
Eagles' star Marcus Skacel served to 14-13
and a CdM hitting error gave the guests the
15-13 win.
"We were doing a lot of things better (in
the first two games), namely passing," Sea
Kings Coach Steve Conti said. "When the
passing's on, it makes it easier on our setter
(Kevin Hansen) and our hitters have better
chances."
Junior Dennis Alshuler was taking
advantage of those chances as he slammed
down seven kills in game four, but after the
hosts grabbed a 12-11 lead, Santa Margari-
ta's Adam Breault got the serve and CdM
committed three consecutive hitting errors.
Matt Zierhut fired over an ace for game
point to force the fifth game.
That's w hen Skacel took over.
He pounded down eight of his game-
high 34 kills in the deciding set, in which
CdM never led.
"Overall this was a great match . We
played great defense, but weren't as con-
sistent as them and that was probably the
differen~e. • Con ti said. "(Skacel) did a
good job. We knew they'd go to him in the
crunch.
"He's an outstanding player, but we
have some outstanding players, too, and
now the focus has to turn to what's coming
up next."
Alshuler tallied 19 kills, but Burden led
the Sea Kings with 24. Coon added 17 to go
with his six solo blocks and five assisted
stuffs. Hansen put up 54 assists.

Estancia
High's Eagles needed only to rely
on relays, they'd be feeling good
today in the Pacific Coast League
baseball standings.
Problem is, hitting, pitching
and fielding count, too.
Laguna Beach was expected
to be good, honest comyetition
Tuesday for the host Eagles, but
Coach Greg Marshall's Artists
won in a mercy-rule decision, 12-
2, after six innings.
Fittingly, Laguna Beach right-
hander Jimmy McKibban struck
out Estancia's Adam Thunell to
end the game just as it started to
rain.
"I didn't expect (a mercy rule),
especially after the way we've
been swinging the bats,• Mar-
shall said. "But they helped us a
little (with four balks, three errors
and a run-scoring wild pitch).•
The Artists (5-4, 1-3 in PCL),
seeking their first playoff berth
this season since 1963, didn't
struggle against Estancia pitch-
ing, collecting 15 hits, including
five doubles and two home runs.
One of the <lingers, a solo blast
by Aaron Skinner leading off the
sixth inning, was clouted to
straightaway center field, where
the wind was blowing out, an
unusual direction for Estancia.
What the Eagles (0-8, 0-4)
were able to accomplish, howev-
er, was success on relays from
right fielder J .D. Willey to fresh-
man shortstop Armando Ortiz,
whose hands a.re softer than the
infield dirt on which he p lays.
McKibban, though, tied the
Eagles in knots, spinning a one-
hitter while striking out 10 and
yielding no ea.med runs.
HThe other day against Aliso
Niguel (a 12-2 loss) we only got
one hit also, H Estancia Coach Tim
Green said. H All we can do is
keep coming out here and work-
ing hard."
Steve Wilson, Estancia's desig-
nated hitter who batted ninth in
the order, collected the only hit
off McKib ban, a single to center
field in the third inning.
Wilson later scored on Long
Nguyen's sacrifice bunt and
McKibban's subsequent throw-
ing error that allowed both run-
ners to settle in scoring position.
With two outs, Wilson scored on a
bases-loaded walk to Matt
Mueller, then Nguyen scored on
McKibban's wild pitch.
