By 1im Grenda, Daily Pilot B uried not far below Newport-Mesa's shopping malls, six-lane highways and million-dollar homes are the precious, fragile foundation of its Ameri- can Indian heritage and prehistoric past. The same prime real estate now home to ritzy residential estates was occupied by hundreds of Gabrieleno Indians living in small huts made of grass and round- stone foundations. And millions of years before yacht races and rush-hour traffic, the area was home to now-extinct species of camels, seals and birds. Since massive movements of the Earth's crust had not yet pushed Orange County much farther north on the globe than present-day Baja California, Mexico, the local climate was much more lush and tropical than today. Over the years, the area has yielded some of the most significant archaeologi- cal and paleontological finds ever uncov- ered in the nation -from the complete and partial skeletons of 4,000-year-old giant sloths to the more recent remains of American Indian camps and burial grounds. •Prom a paleontological standpoint, it's a wonderlul place,• said Steven Con- kling, president of the Orange County Museum of Natural History and paleon- tologist for I.SA Associates, an Irvine con- sulting firm. •This whole area bas a wealth of information.• SrrTING ON A GOLD MINE At least part of the local ancient trea- sure chest can be attributed to Newport- Mesa's sedimentary soil, which was deposited in layers gradually over mil- lions of years by wind and water erosion. It's not an easy thing to pull off -to intuitively know how to bal.ance technical and theo- retical know-how with restraint and lyricism; to know that what isn't played is as important as what ls; to use space and silence to make better sound. Miles Davis knew that. These guys know it. FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 1991 • Millennium Plan full of kJopy ideas for El Toro T he Millennium Plan. Forget everything you've ever known, seen or esperienced in Orange County. 1be past is prologue. From this day forward, the M- Plan ts all that matters. It's big. It's bold. It's, well, kind of 109py in a lovable, whimsical way. Let no one accuse the anti-airport folks of not having a sense of fun. Just in case you haven't seen the latest El Toro reuse plan, it was developed by seven South County cities to the tune of a cool one mil. Sort of reminds me of a "Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney Go To College• movie. "Hey, guys, I got an idea. Let's do our own musical I What do those stuffy old townspeo- ple know anyway? Jeannie, you make the costumes and Jimmy, you build the sets. Judy and I'll borrow some stuff from Old Man Woodrow and that should do it!• (They look doubtful.) The n there's your resort hotel, two golf course, hiking trails and a habitat preserve. Let's see, have we left out any potential voters? No, I think that's everybody. As titles go, I'm partial to the •Buzzword Plan. ft It's like a city designed by spin doctors and pollsters instead of plan- ners. "Millennium Plan": very hip. "Villages ft : warm, fuzzy. •Arts and culture centers,• ~-.•011,. ~ 4> •sports fadlitles• and the one- two combination of e huge •central park" and a "habitat preserve.• Are these bad things? Of course not. They're wonderful things tl).at every dty craves. The question is, how do you pay for themf Pro-airport voters on the two ballot initiatives said that jobs and positive economic impacts were the two most powerful motivators, but wait until you bear this: The Buzzword Plan would create almost as many jobs and dollars as a commer- cial airport! Is that good news or what? In fact, it's downright uncanny. The majority of the project area is parks, perma- nent open space and residen- tial. Most of the balance is high-tech and office space. The smallest component is "mixed-use and entertain- ment," also known as, the stuff that makes money. Yet, the economic projections call for revenues of $10 billion to $13 billion by 2020. That hotel better be a 5,000-room Ritz-Carlton and I shudder to think what the greens fees at those two golf courses will be. Mark my word, you Will soon hear much talk about attracting a pro team, ideally from the NFL. and how it'll be a license to print money. If you like thrillers, check out the number J of cities that have flown directly into a mountainside at 500 mph pursuing that dream. Of course, at that point, the irony would be that this plan is the creation of the same folks who were wor- ried about noise and traffic from a .commercial airport. •wow, what is that noise? Whaaaat? That noise -what is it? Oh, that's our new pro team. What kind is it? Whaaat? What kind is it? Ob, it's quarter to 7." Speaking of pro teams, Wednesday night was the Big Opening at the Big Ed. How cold was it? It was so cold that ... wait ... what do you mean you don't know what the Big Ed is? Used to be Anaheim Stadium. Now it's Edison Inter- national Field. "The Big A" was then. "The Big Ed· 1S now. Better. Much better. Hats off. way off, to Disney, Edison and Anaheim. To borrow a phrase from my English literature teacher -you done good. That hideous, multipurpose football, baseball, rock concert look of the late '60s is gone. The new park echoes Balti- more's Camden Yard, trimmed in forest green seat,s and black wrought iron. Forgive me, architects, but plagiarizing Camden Yard is no vice. The only suspect feature is the rock formation-cum-colored foun! tains in center field. It looks like they sawed off a chunk of Big Thunder Mountain and dragged it down Katella Avenue to the stadium. There are the de riguer trendy food venues -which I still haven't made my peace with, by the way -everything from bratwurst to shrimp. H I were king -and you're damn lucky I'm not -here's what they'd sell at ball games: hot dogs, ~ soda, peanuts, Cracker Jacks - the five basic food groups of baseball. Some dated back to the Pleistocene era more than 300,000 years ago and, while priceless to. researchers, were valued at $90,000. In spring 1935, an encourag- ing excavation of an Indian bur- ial ground just north of Fairview Park bad to be cut short after scavengers raided open grave sites and made off with jewelry and other valuables. For cen- turies, the bluff area overlook· ing the Santa Ana River was a thriving Indian encampment where the local Gabrieleno and other coastal Indians used the wealth of the sea and the land to survive. During 11 days of digging, archaeologists from the Orange County California Historical Researcb Project found three complete human . skeletons, two other skulls and dozens of abalone shells, beads and grinding stones, according to records of the excavation. The recovered materials were packed up and shipped to a county storage area in Santa Ana, where scientists · began studying them. But after 10 days of digging, crews returned in the morning to find one of the graves they had partially uncovered the day before bad been disturbed by scavengers. who made off with some of the buried trea- sure. The project researchers spent the rest of the day work- ing to rebury the areas they had dug into before. Such forces, which gener- ally are caused by volcanic erup- tions or earthquakes, can • destroy underground fossils, making them unrecognizable to scientists. Because about 90% of Orange County has sedimentary soil, the area is littered with fos- sils -. any sign of plant, human or animal life more than 10,000 years old, including bones, teeth, shells and petrified wood. At least 35 full-time paleon- tologists and archaeologists are working at dozens of local sites to answer some of the long- unanswered questions about Newport-Mesa's history. "Before, we didn't really get the big picture,· Conkling said. #We're startmg to get the who and what now. H THE OLD DAYS Most locals hardJy would rec- ognize their community during the days when dinosaurs, giant ground sloths and saber-toothed tigers roamed Newport-Mesa's hills and coastline. During the Cretaceous peri- od -the last age of the dinosaurs, which began 125 mil- lion years ago and lasted until about 63 million years ago - this area and the rest of coastal Orange County still was under about 120 feet of water. Thal means areas as far inland as Irvine are filled with the buried remains of prehistoric ocean animals, including whales, which commonly used the shallow local waters to birth calves much like migratmg Cali- fornia gray whales do today in Mexico, Conkling said. "Whales are like elephants. They have big bones that fos- silize very well,• Conkling said. "But logistically, it's a nightmare to deal with fossils that size.• In 1933, the county's first true fossil -a tooth fragment from a duck-billed dinosaur that lived more than 60 million years ago -was uncovered near Bolero Lookout along what is now San- tiago Canyon Road. The skeleton of a baby mastodon -a prehistoric rela- tive or modem elephants -was discovered in 1962 at a Costa Mesa construction site near the historic Estancia Adobe. In 1986, a piece of skull from another duck-billed animal was found in Silverado Canyon, and the last two of the county's ainosaur finds were uncovered in 1992 when a leg bone and other parts of the same type of animal surfaced during grading for the Eastern Transportation Corridor. WILD KINGDOM The Cenozoic era, which began about 63 million years ago, introduced species of pre- historic animals that would hardly make good house pets today, Conkling said. Saber-toothed felines that were about the size of modem house cats but equipped with 3- incb-long, razor-sharp claws walked the hills and brush of Newport-Mesa, feeding mostly on small rodents. Cost Effective Legal So[Ji]lutlons c/mBL . Animals called oredonts, which Conkling described as a cross between a pig and a sheep, were Newport-Mesa's first vege- tarians, gobbling down grass like prehistoric lawn mowers. "They were all over the place," Conkling said. In March 1997, LSA researchers recovered the arm bone, ribs, shoulder blade, ver- tebrae and backbone of a giant sloth in the San Joaquin Fresh Water Marsh Reserve south of Jamboree Road in Newport Beach. The 3,500-pound grazing animal lived in the marsh, feed- ing on plants, trees and bushes. Believed to be about 11,000 years old, the arm bone of the animal is about the same length as a human forearm, but much thicker. After that find, scientists uncovered dozens of predatory bird skeletons and bird drop- pings at the site, which yielded a wealth of information about the area and what the birds ate, Conkling said. "On one side. they bad the ocean with all those food resources. And on the other side_ they bad the foothills for gathering fruit and nuts. Talk about a choice location." The 45-acre marsh near John Wayne Airport still bears the remnants of the Gabrieleno v1J. lage -almost a dozen signif1. cant archaeological sites, includ- ing camps, human burials and fossilized animal remains, Con- kling said. In doubles, CdM's Christian Jensen and Randy Myers swept at No. 3, while teammates H ooter Jack and Peter Kulmaticki (at No. 1) and Cameron Thylor and Sam Sbahmard.i (at No. 2) won two or three sets. Usually, the thought of Corona del Mar High facing Woodbridge stirs the senses. But not this year. Not with the defending Sea View League champion Warriors miss- ing their top three players. Parker Collins, a junior trans- fer, swept at No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings, while Sameer Chopra Woodbridge (7-4, 2-1), ranked fourth in Orange County and the two-time defending CIF Southern Section Division I champions, lost David Lingman, its No. 1 singles • SEE TENNIS PAGE 9 MARC MARTJ.4 I OAl.Y PlCT Corona del Mar High's Parker Collins chases down a forehand shot en route to 6·3 victory over Woodbrtdge's Adam Artunlan. r---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------, •Mustangs put away • Estancia with ease in PCL dual meet, 96·37.
