It was in early January, on a day when I had already planned too much. I was fresh off the holidays and fresh out of energy, and I was disappointed that we were short our third worker. Our storeroom was exploding with bags, books, clothes, toys and other previously used items. I bad a little chat with myself about the importance ofa positive attitude. and why I was in the group, and then l met Pam, my co-worker for the afternoon. We worked nonstop to unload, unwrinkle, clean up piles and ring up sales. The store was busy and I was buzzing back and forth. Several times, a nice young man came to ask me to measure some pants for him. He was in his 20s or 30s, disable, and even though he could not speak, be communicated quite well. When he was out of earshot, one of our customers said that if we could find a suit that fit him. she would be more than happy to pay for tt. The weekend was great -lounging in a mountain cabin, visiting old friends and enjoying the clean, crisp air and snow- covered pine trees. The ride home Tuesday night started off peaceful enough. We encountered a few flurries through the Mammoth area, every flake gently wisping by my windshield. None of it stuck. It was like a winter wonderland v01d of hazards. By the way, I still have that record, and I would listen to if I bad a record player. Well, for those who don't know what uGrease," which is based on the successful Broad- way musical of the same name, is all about, the story line is sim- ple: A boy and girl from two dif- ferent worlds (Sandy is from Australia and Danny from Hometown, USA) fall in love, break up, get back together, and finally, she caves to peer pres- sure to make sure she bolds on to him. And they supposedly live happily •together forever" (a whomp baba luba a whomp barn boo). , The und, erlying story line is also simple: High-kicking greasers (1\-avolta, Jeff Conaway, Barry Pearl and Michael Tucd), also known as the T-Birds, drift through their senior year at Rydell High School (aka Venice High School) more concerned with racing fast cars and romancing the Pink Ladies (Stockard Chan- ning, Didi Conn, Dinah Manoff and Jamie Donnelly). And in the end, the T-Birds and Pink Ladies win at both. The movie is filled with sexu- al innuendoes that one does not catch as a 1970s preteen but certainly does as an adult (Did you ever really li!ten to the words of "Greased Llgbtnin'"?). I have well-qualified algebra students on to take geometry in high school. Each year, more than half of the algebra class brings home honors on the Golden State Exam. This algebra class also is offered to a select few seventh-graders -usually no more than three or four qualify each year. One of the requinmlentt for acceptance into the taught mathemat- ics at the school for , t-, r • ~ ,, "' ! ' , . r program is parental consent, . ' . ' five years. This follows more than 25 years in excellent schools in the Los Angeles and Santa Ana unWed school districts. To see what a wonderful environment we have at TeWink.le, one must spend some time here, follow students tp class and get a true feeling of the learning thot is taking place. Then and only then can one pass judgment. ln the years I have been at TeWlnkle, many new and inno- vative programs have been inaugurated, including the alge- bra class that I teach. We are offering algebra to our gifted and high-achieving eighth-graders so they may qualify to take advanced place- ment mathematics later in high school. Each year, we send 30 to 40 with the stipulation for seventh-grade students that if they take geometry in the eighth grade, they must take it on the high school campus, maintainillg ooncurrent enroll- ment in TeWink.le and Estancia High School. We can offer neither a class, nor bus transportation for just three students. Parents agree at that time to provide transportation to and from the high school each day. I researched this subject and fo\ind only one middle school in all of Orange County that does offer geometry. To prepare our students for algebra in the eighth grade, we have developed a sixth-grade curriculum that covers both sev- enth-and eighth-grade mathe- matics . At the end of that sixth-grade year, most students will qualify for eighth-grade math, with a few proving they are ready for algebra. This is just an example of bow we try to provide chal- lenge for our top students. We adjust our program at other lev- els, as well. to accommodate all students Clll4 th~ learning_ mCMleiitiet. Our skills classes are designed to help our slower stu- dents become proficient in thelr basics so they may be successfW in regular classes. Each year, almost 7 5 % of our basic skills students •graduate" into grade- level classes. The teachers in the mathe- matics department are dedicat- ed and hard-working. They spend many hours planning, preparing, guiding, teaching, · tutoring and generally helping our clientele to achieve at their highest potential. I see motivated and achiev- ing students in all the class- rooms. Our school offers an environment conducive to learn- ing, and we see the results dai- ly. MARC MARTIN I OAl.Y PILOT HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VOLLEYBALL argarit Archbold, Jameson lead balanced Newport attack as undefeated Sailors post fifth straight .sweep; Santa Margarita drops off to 6-2, 1-1. By Richard Dunn. Daily Piiot NEWPORT BEACH -Motivating his players in the pregame speech Friday was easy for Newport Harbor High boys volleyball coach Dan Glenn. All Glenn had to do was glance over the Orange County preseason poll, in which Santa Margarita was ranked No. 1. Then, there was that bit of history, a streak of eight straight games in which Santa Margarita had defeated the Sailors. "Our kids were jacked up tonight,· Glenn said, following his team's surprisingly smooth sweep over the Eagles, 15- 10, 15-11, 15-12. in front of a near-capacity crowd at New- port Harbor. "In this (Sea View) league, you've got to win at home, and so th.ts is a nice way .-------, to start, going 2-0 at home, especially this one," added Glenn, whose squad, 6-0 overall, 2-0 in Sea View play, swept an opponent for the fifth consecutive time this season. Santa Marganta (6-2, 1-1), currently ranked fifth in the county Wltb Newport Harbor No. 1, played Wlthout its most effective weapon, Marcus Skacel, one of tbe best playe~ in Orange County. •Marcus was very key in (the Eagles') win the other night against Corona del Mar (in five games),• Glenn said. .. - Ska.eel. who'd missed a lot of Santa Margarita's n09- league campaign with back problems, returned to the floor against CdM, but reportedly re-injured his back in the match and was forced to miss Friday's clash at Harbor. "With or without him, they're a very good team," Gl~ said, •but they were the preseason No. 1 team because Of him in the lineup." The Sailors lost both Sea View meetings against Santa Margarita last year in three, and dropped two more games in a San Diego tournament, tbe first time in history tlae Eagles enjoyed a clean sweep of Newport Harbor. But that was last year, when tbe Eagles won league aqd CIF Southern Section Division II titles. This year, the Sailors have the inside track to the Sea View title, which they shared with Santa Margarita tWo years ago. Scott Archbold, a 6-foot-2 seruor outside bitter, led Nri- port Harbor with 16 kills, 16 digs, three solo blocks and An assisted block, while 6-foot 1uruor Matt Jameson ausbld home 13 kills, adding a dozen <jigs, three solo blocks and an assisted block. Newport Harbor enjoyed comfortable leads to start tJae first and second games, largely because of Santa MargarUa breakdowns and excellent Sailor digging, led by senior S\(- ter 'n-avis Nelson (42 usists), who had 18 digs. Harbor's Scott Dore, a 6-3 senior who had a team·big)l four solo blocks, stuffed a Santa Margarita spike to produce a 10-4 lead for the Sailors in the second jrame and finalW: a S.O run. __ .._ Alan Limon 's service ace and timiAg digging by ZCM;D • SEE VOLLEYBALL PAGE 83 'I ., ' '92MAZDA MIATA ~ s~ •9999 '95CHEVY CAMAR0b28 Wlitt,CD, '92CADIUAC SEVIILE SiWtr/silwr, mill, Lexw '97 ACURA 2.2CL Rtd/Grey, ltam, fvll Newpun ll~A<:h/C.oua Mcu Daily Ptlol MCNICHOLS CONTINUED FROM 81 "She's really don<' d grt'dl JOb leading the young ldd1e'> m our program,• TdUey expldmed ·1 knew with the players who graduated last year, w1•'d have to have someone step up and be a leader.
